Well my Dell XPS m1330 ordeal is now complete
Story short, originally purchased 2/08 NOT on my Dell account which added extra difficulties to the resolution.
Many main board replacements and LCD among other parts, yet it always looked new.
Dell first offered a studio 14 and i said NO way, the second offer was a full refund, that was more like it.
I accepted, then of course no-one could confirm that was the offer the very next day.
It took some time then they figured out why the refund offer was made, this was a special m1330 with a T9500 cpu.
That pushed it over the standard studio replacement.
Yes they offered a studio 16, declined and held them full refund.
Well over a month later and countless email/phone calls
I think it is finally over, well the check must clear.
At this point, i may press them to also refund the sales tax of nearly $150 as it is very easy for them to do this.
Yet, our state really needs the money, small price to pay for rent on the laptop, and i am tired of this whole deal.
Now i only hope my new Latitude E6510 i7 holds up better.
Therefor, if you have a higher-end m1330, push for that 100% REFUND
![]()
-
wow thats a big number!
-
The upgrade to the t9500 was about + $575 back in the day these came standard with around 1.6 ghz or so cpu.
At times i was ready to give in to the BS that Dell plays, it can be so frustrating.
So, indeed it is possible to get a full refund from dell when you are past the first 21 days, or WELL past -
LOL, well done cyber16. I'm really happy for you. I didn't have an m1330, but I had an m1530. Bought it around the same time as you (01/08) and maxed that thing out for a price of $2569. I got a replacement xps 1645 in February for it. I don't think Dell really wanted me to pull for a refund of that baby so they surprisingly (to me at least) kitted out my replacement (which is still only worth $2000)
. Check my sig for the specs to compare. I would have easily gotten a really good m15x with that potential refund but I'm happy with the replacement apart from the overheating. I'm very happy you got what you want and can breathe a sigh of relief. Keep working for what you want people, never give in, like cyber16
. I hope your next system is much better experience.
-
Good result. Although if my Dell XPS notebook experience is anything to go by, you'd have spent more on phone bills than the notebook... At least you've got something for it, and the opportunity to give your original money to e.g. HP / Asus / etc.
I wish everyone trying to get restitution for the ******* pile of **** that was the M1330 the best of luck.
No-one should be punished with continued ownership of the ******* ********* piece of **** ever notebook (well, with the exception of Macbook "Pro"s) in recent years, at least in my experience. It promised so much, I liked the design a lot - but the only thing it delivered a lot of was extreme frustration. The customer care / tech support definitely didn't help in this regard.
I have a few issues with the Precision M6500's but the approach to service on Prosupport is so completely different to XPS Support that it might as well be a different company. I often wonder these days why Dell doesn't do more to improve consumer customer support. -
I got 2 offers (with additional payment around $200):

Studio XPS 16 Order - Poland
It's a bit strange as the 2nd offer has Core2Duo proc and 6-cell battery, so it looks inferior. Definitely will go with the first one until extra payment for this SXPS is resolved (I'm waiting for their e-mail answer). Unfortunately it's not SXPS 1647 but anyway something new to replace my M1330. -
Cool beans. Glad to know you got a resolution.
I wonder how many other M1330 owners have been tricked into paying for a replacement though, when their pile of **** has failed for the nth time? -
Dell to replace my m1330 with....
an m1330! I accidentally spilt coke all over it (and in it somehow!), I have got accidental damage cover so I got on the phone to Dell where they said they could replace any damaged parts or even the whole thing.
Quite pleased really but surprised they still have stock of all the parts. -

I guess they decided to forgot about my 9 cell batter. While the processor is technically an upgrade from my m1330 (T8100 @2.1ghz) I'm not very happy. I have 4gb of memory in my 1330 by it only came with 2 originally. Seems like this system might have the same overheating problems...
This XPS 16 is to replace the studio 14 that I don't like and that is an i3 processor @ 2.2 ghz.
Should I ask for a full refund or just tell them to fix the specs? -
It has an ATI card instead of an nVidia card so it might be a bit better on heat.
You'd definitely want 4 GB with Win64. Mixed memory sizes might slow throughput down too. I bought my M1330 for portability so I'd probably want a refund over a larger laptop. Overall, the specs on this model aren't that bad. -
They replaced my m1330 with a studio 1458 like i stated in a old post. So i complained and they replaced that 1 with a studio XPS 16. It didn't have a refurbished sticker on the bottom and came with the original black studio XPS box. The gray metal trim was already coming off like it was missing some glue. After two system exchanges i called up dell told them about it being physically damage when i got it and just told them ill accept for awhile. That was a month ago now its gotten to annoy me, also this system for some reason when I'm watching videos this system get real hot and once the fan comes on it doesn't want to shutoff. so i called back and they told me they was going to swap the motherboard and heat sink, the rep put me on hold and then told me since i only had this system a month they issue another system exchange. Below is my current system and the system that there replacing it with.
Current System
Studio XPS 16 : Intel Core 2 Duo T9800 2.93Ghz
Display : Artic White w/ Leather 16in Truelife 1080p Full HD RGBLED Display
Memory : 8gb 1066MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
Hard Drive : 500GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM)
Battery : Primary 6-cell
Graphics : 512mB ATI Radeon HD 3670 graphics card
Wireless : Dell Bluetooth 370 Card
Wireless : Dell Wireless 1520
New System
Studio XPS 16 : Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 3.06Ghz
Display : Artic White w/ Leather 15.6" WLED FHD Display
Memory : 8gb 1066MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
Hard Drive : 500GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM)
Battery : Primary 6-cell
Graphics : 1gbB ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card
Wireless : Dell Bluetooth 370 Card
Wireless : Dell Wireless 1520
Have anyone else that is waiting been told that they are not shipping out 16" RGB screens right now with the systems? I looked on the dell site and even for the new systems its not listed, but they told me that since my old system had the RGB screen as soon as i get the system call in and they make a dispatch and have tech sent out to replace the screen with the correct one. What do you all think of the T9900 compared to the new i7 processors? -
Comparing to your m1330 spec's that t9900 studio setup is a huge upgrade.
Even the current t9800 system in a leap.
Both the t9800 & t9900 are raw power that would take a i7 m620 to over-come/get close.
At this point, be happy or ask for a refund.
In my case the original cost of my m1130 made it an easy refund choice -
Don't get me wrong I was happy with my current system. Because After to system replacement, and the rep the i spoke to after i got the 1458 was the 1 that offered me the memory & cpu upgrade because I wanted to stick with the xps line and then sent me and inspiron. They offered the system exchange because they told me it was a new system and it was already physically damaged and was overheating in less them a month. & I don't even think i pushed the potential of the cpu on my current system. Because I'm bout to go back to school for CAD and learning some video editing on the side. So I'll really see then.
-
I have gotten my Studio 1457 for a month now, and I already needed to have the hard drive, motherboard, ram, and heatsink replaced. I chatted with tech support and they agreed to a system exchange of another xps system. I will give details once I know the specs. Hopefully, it's better than the Studio 14 I got (which has a core i7 processor).
-
It looks like I'm getting a Studio XPS 13, since they already shipped out the battery part number T557C battery to me...

Studio XPS 1645 Order - Poland -
I had just complained to dell yesterday about receiving a refurbished studio xps 13 system. They want me to ship the battery back. Hopefully, I get some system that is new and performs better than my studio 14 currently.
-
After spending all day trying to get them to not send me a studio xps 13 with worse specs than my studio 14, I have decided to give up and to keep the studio 14 but have them make sure everything works well with this computer. I am pretty annoyed that Dell had a change of heart right at the end. I think that After receiving the specs for the Studio XPS 13 system, I am pretty unsatisfied with the specs:

My problems are that the Studio XPS 13 has no LED screen, no 7200rpm hard drive, the video card is less powerful, and that the processor is also not as powerful.
Please give me comments before I decide which system to ship back. -

The studio 14 is by far the better machine when it comes to install components.
At the least, if you decided to sell, it will sell for far more.
No comparison, if dell won't budge, keep that studio 14 -
Okay, on Thursday, I received the Studio XPS 13. I turned on the machine, and immediately noticed two problems, the lights on one of the hinges do not light up and the hard drive light does not function. Angrily, I called dell, complaining that I got two system exchanges, both with laptops that do not function normally out of the box. They will give back a call Monday to discuss a resolution to my problem. For now, I am aiming to get a studio xps 16 brand new with the new video card that is just released (HD 5730 instead of the HD 4670). Dell better give me a better machine with new specs, after all I've been through.
-
I was pretty interested in the XPS 13 initially, but after reading so many horror stories I strayed away from it. I have a Studio 14, and absolutely love it, but the lack of disk drive and comparatively weak specs makes me want something a bit more.
I settled with a Lenovo Y460, and have been pretty happy overall. -
my M1330 kept getting BSOD and i demanded a replacement.
No clue on what Im getting tho.
I'm hoping I can get M11x. -
-
Will do. My system was about 2.4k when I got it, and it had mobo replaced 3 times already, all with in 12 months period.
I know it would be a huge downgrade price wise, bit I personally dont need a bigger laptop. (my sig).
The rep told me it's going to be 1340, or 14z, but will give me a call when he gets the spec. I plan to tell him what I want when he calls back. -
-
I have good news and its thanks to all of you,
i bought a 1330 2 years or so ago for when i started to travel overseas.
it broke at home then in china 3times and now in singapore 4 times..
after reading this forum i decided i wanted a replacement for my 1330. all the same problems and 5 mobs replacements, hard drive etc and they agreed! i had to do an executives email bomb.. but it worked!
of course the bad news is its being replace with the 1645 which has major problems as well.. the size bothers me and they arent going to give me a bag which renders my $130 sexy 13' leather bag(waste of money to begin with) useless but every single part is an upgrade from my current configuration

the best part is when it breaks, and it will, i can get a replacement for the replacement! I hope that this will go on forever and ever, never having a computer that works for more than a few months and then getting it replaced with another POS computer and so on!
the worst part of it all is that they wont even give me an i7 quadcore for my troubles. -
I was offered this as my replacement...

What do you guys think..?
I think I would rather have a lower processor (i7-720), an ATI HD 5850, the 1080p screen, and DDR3 RAM @ 1333MHz instead..? -
Take it dude.
-
@laptopz, it looks great but I like how you're thinking. Definitely tell them to drop the processor to i7-720 and ask for at least the HD 5850 (maybe the 1080p screen as well). Personally I don't think it would be worth having a heavy m15x if it ain't packing the graphical power. 240m is too weak for an Alienware. Trade the 820 + 240m for the 720 +5850 (or maybe even i5-540, if necessary & possible).
-
I actually don't even need such a high end video card (I don't really game, hence why I had an XPS M1330 haha). But I did just want it just for show
I actually would have more use for an i7 for video editing, so I'm keeping it at an i7 for sure.
I contacted Dell about it, and they said they'll call me tomorrow.. so now I'm waiting on their call ! -
-
I have had my xps motherboard replaced once last year, and havnt used much of it since then as was afraid it was going to die again since my warranty expires this August. Now that I find out they've already started replacing them with other models, im disappointed. Ive started using my XPS again from my netbook and it still works fine (other than it slowing down into the night due to heating issues which needs a reboot and a few minutes wait to recover). I wouldnt want my £1.4k to go to waste..
gpu running at 91 degree celcius now. does the extended 1year warranty (gpu issues) show up in the warranty status, because it doesnt show on mine and my original 1year warranty is up. -
-
-
No, it's not normal and you should definitely contact Dell.

Dell is giving me a hard time now, with the UK support site saying my xps is not from europe (I bought it from Singapore but have since transferred ownership to UK in order to replace my motherboard), and the Singapore site saying my warranty has expired. Seems like my only option now is to call them (i think there is a charge for these calls?). I've been told that this overheating has nothing to do with the GPU fault covered by the extended warranty? Can anyone clarify? Has anyone had theirs replaced on the extended warranty? -
Downloaderz,
My replaced XPS was bought in the USA, then warranty transferred to Poland, where laptop was replaced. Initially Dell's reps in Poland were telling me replacement is not possible (due to origin of the laptop ie. USA). But finally after 2 months of email exchanges they agreed to replace my M1330 for SXPS 1645 (see my posts in this thread).
So it is not 'mission impossible' simply don't give up. -
See my previous posts:
I have received TWO system exchanges: Studio 1457 and after that, a Studio XPS 13. Both have been nonfunctional out of the box (Studio 14 with the high pitched whine and random freezing issues, SXPS 13 with the malfunctioning lights...) Furious, I finally talked to dell one more time, and they agreed to give me a studio xps 16. AND they are going to give me a computer they said equal or better specs to my STUDIO 1457. It took a really long time to get what I wanted, but here it is! I will post the specs of the Studio XPS 16 once I get them.
Here are the specs for my studio 14:

Seems good...I am finally satisfied with my system exchange! -
I've got the same specs coming minus the 1080 screen which I couldn't get them to change. Grrr -
The rep called today and offered 14z (not even sure what models there are) with ATI graphics. I asked for M11x instead, and he said yes but it's pretty much going to be basic model with upgraded CPU (i7).
We will see the outcome of this hopefully soon. -
Even with the M11x, it is severely underpowered compared to the Studio XPS (Core i7 ULV vs. Core i7). Also the ram speed is lower (800MHz vs. 1333MHz)...I guess it is up to you what you like to sacrifice.
-
Yeah i know, but I do not need powerful laptop if you see my sig. Just need a portable one. The 14 series he offered did have high specs, but I just don't dig the look on it.

Ugh. My M1330's nvidia chip is failing for the third time. I have a feeling that this time I call I might get somewhere as far as a replacement, but Dell has NOTHING in their current lineup that excites me. The XPS 16 is a beast. I can't fit that on a college fold-out desk. Plus it's heavier. The Studio 14 is plasticky, clunky, and ugly. When I pull out my m1330 I get all sorts of comments on how good looking it is. Call me vane, but I sort of like that.
Who has switched up to the 16? Can you comment on the weight and size of it compared to the m1330. That's the only thing that vaguely excites me, but I worry a lot about the size. My brother has an m1530 and it's a monster. I would hate having to lug that around.
Also, no one has mentioned what happens to your old m1330. Do you have to send it back, or can I keep it as a paper weight? -
Okay. So the Indian lady is trying to get her supervisor for me. I've been on the phone for 45 minutes so far. She tells me that it is absolutely not possible to get a replacement at this time and I shouldn't even bother waiting. BullSH*T it isn't.

Well I finally just got off the phone with supervisor #1.
He explained to me that the reason I see so many people getting replacements is because they are "special cases." Apparently to be a special case you need to have a certain number of tech calls in a certain period of time. I have had two motherboard replacements, and need my third right now, and they've all been exactly six months apart. Sh*t.
So right now they just want to put a new mobo and heatsync in and let it fail in another 6 months until I am out of warranty. Lovely. I told him I didn't want to make any decisions yet and to call me back on Wednesday. Meanwhile I will be preparing a "corporate bomb" type e-mail as I did six months ago. I believe I have a case here, especially because the last time they outright LIED to me about the mobo being an updated part and it would never fail again. Yeah, thanks Dell.
Meanwhile I ordered my grandfather a Studio 17 last week and I am wondering what the hell I have done!!!?? Oh well. -

Dell likes to lie, it's easier than actually fixing things.
Dell to replace my m1330 with ?????????
