It doesn't mean anything. Windows Experience Index is a crappy benchmark (if you can even call it a benchmark) and it's numbers are useless (expect for determining Aero).
-
Um, a 3dMark score or an in-game benchmark is a hell of a lot better in determining which driver performs better than relying on your WEI score.
-
Yeah, but the fact is the WEI puts more bias on gaming performance, so if it goes down... that is pretty sad. Sure you could run 3dmark, but gaming performance should definitely be lower than your previous drivers since the WEI is biased in that respect.
In-game benchmarks arn't really too accurate in the sense that certain ones put more emphasis on shaders, some on shadows, and theres just all sorts of variety, which is why a benchmark would be much more appropriate. Games are just good for stressing out the GPU. -
Ahaa.. the popularity / preference for 175.97 seems to have just sneaked past 174.31. Interesting. This should be quiet helpful for the people asking about the 'best' driver out there, though I must repeat, there is nothing as a 'best' driver, but preferred one' probably. And the ones that seem to work fine for many people. Anyways.. all is well.
-
What are you talking about? My point is that WEI is NOT a good indicator of gaming performance EVEN IF it has a "gaming" test. There have been many reported incidents (I see it often at NBR) where a user upgrades a piece of hardware and gets a lower score. Go figure.
You could not be more wrong here. Do you know how the WEI gaming score is determined? From Microsoft...The reality is that the WEI Gaming score ONLY takes in to account textures and not shaders, shadows, and everything else in games. That is why it's a poor indicator of gaming performance. -
Yeah, I never said it was a good indicator to begin with. But the fact that accounting for only textures and the score for the GPU is going down... thats really not a good thing. 3D Mark provide a much better assessment, but the fact is.. WEI going down from a change in driver is not really a good thing either even if it only accounts for Textures.

i dl 17597 and it says that it cant be installed. Then i used a inf in the forum and it installed, but then i run 3dmark06 and got 1400 wtf? returnet to my original
-
Make sure you are downloading from either laptopvideo2go, or Dell's official homepage. Do NOT download dell drivers and install and then randomly find an ini file to replace or download a laptopvideo2go and randomly replace the ini file with a random dell one you find.
My advice is to just stick with what is on the Dell site. If you are going to install a version not on Dell's site, use the modded INI file they have for that particular version. -
lol...
Poor guy. But yeah, stick with Dell dude. And did you get the 175.97 from Dell? Or the laptopvideo2go forum? And where did you get the .inf from? I mean which forum? Because laptopvideo2go *does not" have aa modded inf, AFAIK. There is an .inf posted by a user, but you know, its better to stick with Dell drivers or even if u r getting from the forum, don't mix them up
get everything from one place.
-
guys what's wrong if i didn't use the modded .inf from laptopvideo2go?...any decrease on performance?
i'm using 177.66 from laptopvideo2go.
thanks -
I think crash and others describer a couple of posts earlier the use of these modded .inf's. Please take a look. I would guess no decrease in performance.
-
The .inf has nothing to do with performance. It simply tells your computer what video cards the driver is meant for. If your video card is not on the list in the .inf file, you're computer won't install the driver saying that it is not compatible with your hardware.
Since the drivers from NVidia are released only for desktop cards, laptopvideo2go adds in the entries for the mobile cards to the .inf file so that laptop users can install them for their mobile graphics cards. -
as of now i didnt experience any of the crash or other problem related to NVIDIA driver....i played C&C3 for almost an hour....browse the internet....watch video stream....watch Blu Ray movies.
nothing happen.
any idea how can i simulate if my NVIDIA driver (177.66) will crash without modded .inf installed?....i want to stay with this driver version but if what you say is true, i want to verify it first before looking for another driver version. -
i installed 177.66 WITHOUT modded .inf but still my computer recognize the new driver with "M" (8600M GT) which means mobility.....
btw, i didnt install modded .inf because it wont play my Blu Ray....i read some post that if you install modded .inf Blu Ray will not play. -
I think the bluray property or feature if you like to call it that way, depends on whether the driver version carries a WHQL certificate. And this driver is not a WHQL driver anyways.. So did u try playing a bluray disc?? did it work?
In your case, probably you didn't need the modded inf because the original inf itself recognizes the native card??? -
That's right. The original .inf apparently supports the 8600M GT.
-
yes. my BluRay movies work.
you mean the original inf from 156.63 (Dell release driver)...i dont know how it work. -
The original .inf as in the original .inf contained with the extracting driver package. Normally the moddef inf are supposed to be placed into that extracted folder replacing the original .inf.
Anyways... As long as it works, fine. Take care and enjoy your lappy

I am using 175.76 and my temps are as follows (dell release driver also)
*Idle*
Core #0: 39 C
Core #1: 39 C
GPU Core: 56 C
HDD: 40 C
When surfing the internet, running HWmonitor, and playing music-
Core #0: 48 C
Core #1: 49 C
GPU Core: 66 C (but fan kicked on BIOS update) and dropped it to 56 C (fluxuates right around 60 when actually performing)
HDD: 40 C
(look good in retrospect to the activities I was doing?) -
That's normal. I'm looking at about the same temperatures right now.
Fluctuates between 55-65 on idle, and stays around 65-70 when gaming for me. Using 174.31 drivers as well, found them to be the best overall. -
Yep
They are normal and me sees the same (just like halkyon)... though mine doesn't fluctuate that much to 66 for the fan to kick in and bring it back to 55-56.. It hovers around 55-58 mostly while surfing, music, hwmonitor, a word file and a bit of coredraw graphics suite.. sometimes it starts going up to 61-63.. but yeah, thats it. Me is on 174.31
*Thought* I must add, for me, the temp' seemed to fluctuate more towards 65-66 and the fan bringing it back to 55-56 more when on battery. I am in the balanced power mode in battery. Havent changed much in the setting, except increase the display brightness a little bit from the default value. Just thought I will make a note of this as well, in case it makes any difference.
Anyways, those temp' are perfectly fine.
Cheers. -
** Information **
(mostly for users who are already following this thread and who jump to the last page straight away LOL...)

Updated the first post with links to the drivers.
Cheers and good luck. Thanks too, to you all, for your super cooperation and response in this thread and with all the wonderful suggestions / results / reports / votes. Its really nice now with so much information for the drivers in one place for this particular card / system
Great stuff. Keep it going people and lets make it bigger and more useful. Thanks again

Hm, my new 177.72 are quite hot, I'm hitting 85 degrees while playng Flatout Ultimate Carnage.
I'll try the 174.31 now as it seems to be a popular one.
-
You could also try 175.97 >> people have been reporting lower temp' with that. Though take a look at Forte' post here in this thread.. I remember Forte said something like not as much better performance with games though with 175.97. Anyways.. Let us know how it goes
Cheers.
-
156.63 --> 4,351 3DMark Score
175.19 --> 4,931
175.97 --> 4,765
177.67 --> 4,716
174.31 --> 4,686
i'll stay with 175.19

** For the 175.97 Users - A small request **
I just heard from 3 of my friends that installing this driver resulted in lower temperatures, both in idle / load, by about 3 to 5 C. I am sorry I don't remember who were using it here and what did you see. So if you guys who are using 175.97 have time, please drop in a line confirming if in your case, did you see any change in temp just because of installing this driver version. It would be pretty useful info / tip if you can do it. Thanks a lot in advance.
Cheers.
-
I've been web surfing and ripping cd's for an hour now and CPU 35'c GPU 46'c.. 175.97.. I never checked my previous temps though sorry. GPU Peaked at 74'C/ CPU 59'c playing crysis earlier.
-
Well, I would guess its lower that your previous temp's, because normally idle temp' are like 54 - 57 I think.. at least for me!! The temp' you are reporting are pretty nice and cool and lower than normal I would say.
Thanks for the reply, mate
Helpful.
-
Sorry if this has been asked before, but i skimmed most of the pages; and googled and didnt find an answer. Is there a way to install 175.97 on XP?
-
I guess no.. I have been following this driver version pretty extensively and I didn't come across a place where they talk about / suggest installing this driver for XP. It *seems* to be Vista Specific (I may be wrong, coz I am not really sure if you can force install this on XP with some modded .inf or something like that, but I haven't found anything that says we could do this.) The latest for XP *seems* to be the 174.31. Cheers.
What are you using right now? And any specific reason why you want to install this driver? -
Just a quick question.
It seems most people are using 175.97.
I voted for 174.31, but actually I wanted to vote for 174.74.
Should I use 175.97?? If so, Dell or Laptopvideo2go?? -
Its your own choice, mate
What are you currently on? Do you have problems with the one you are currently using or do you want to go for 175.97 just because it seems to be the most popular? As said many times before, all these drivers work for some, and they don't for others
So its all your own choice and if you have any specific issues with the one you are currently using now.
Of course, there have been reports of lower temp' with 175.97, and even here some people report that. I don't think it necessarily means that everyone using 175.97 will have lower temp's, for example. You might, you might not
Having said that, AFAIK, it seems to be a good driver though
And if I were to chose to use it, I would take it from
Dell
Cheers and good luck and please do drop by to let us know how it is if you are using it
-
I am using version 172.93; i wanna make the changeover because of the supposed cpu heat reduction :3
This one idled at 60C and went to 68C within minutes of playing STARCRAFT... It now idles at 57-60C with the A09 BIOS update. -
I wouldn't be too much worried with that idle temp.. I think its normal, though the average values I have seen around (and for me too) is around 53-56 C at idle.. and with laptop coolers it gets even lower and as I mentioned in my previous post, people using 175.97 (including some close friends of mine) said they are getting lower temp's. So yeah, may be you could try it out
No harm in it, of course. And don't forget to let us know hows it going. Good luck.
-
Oh, i tried installing the 175.97 drivers but i get the "ONLY ABLE TO INSTALL ON A VISTA" type error.
-
Oooppsss... Oh yes, its for Vista
I haven't seen / come across a XP version of it yet. You on XP??
-
Ahhh.. you edited your post now
now I see it... hmmm.. on XP, no I guess.. But you could try out the laptopvideo2go forum for some latest / proven XP drivers!! I remember reading around 174.31 was working well for some.. Take a look there in those forums.

Also, please take a look here...

Uh oh, double post! It k though.
-
Where? When? How? why?
PS., a small matter of 500 posts for me
Olleeyyyyyyy
-
You couldve just put that second URL link in the previous post you made. Its not a big deal.
Congrats 500 posts! Woohoo!
What drivers are you currently on FondueKid, have you had any experience with any of the other ones? -
Well yeah, Sorry for that.
I was not concentrating at that time.. got distracted a bit with someone (actually a nice girl in our lab here, LOL...
) walking into my room... Anyways.
Thanks.
I am still on 174.31 but have a very high temptation to try out 175.97. Wanted to last weekend, but was busy. May be some time this week / weekend I am gonna try 175.97, the one from Dell.
Tried 174.74 from laptopvideo2go but crashed a few times... Tried one from the 175.xx series (Don't remember exactly which one) and it didn't even let me install because got an error saying hardware not supported... and at that time, since I was teaking around with other things on my laptop, I went back to 174.31 and stayed with this since then!! -
Can someone recommend me a good driver for COD4? For some reason I experience stuttering whenever strafing in that game even with decent frame rates. I've tried 174.31, 175.97, 177.66, and 177.79 and all suffer from the stuttering
-
-
Okie dokie.. me wanted to try out 175.97 too.. my frs keep breaking my balls saying they are getting better temp readings.. so lets see... I have installed 175.97 driver now...
Will keep posting temp' (normal condition) followed by temp (with zalman cooler).. it will all be name/min/max/current after 15 mins of real time HDR IBL for now..
Using 175.97 - without cooler:
THM_ - 40/78/76
Core 0 - 35/73/67
Core 1 - 39/76/74
GPU - 55/76/76
HDD - 38/41/41
Using 175.97 - with cooler, fan at full:
THM_ - 40/78/73
Core 0 - 35/73/65
Core 1 - 39/76/72
GPU - 55/76/73
HDD - 37/41/37
Idle temps with 175.97 - without cooler
THM_ - 38/58/43
Core 0 - 35/51/41
Core 1 - 37/53/44
GPU - 54/66/54
HDD - 35/42/37
Idle temps with 175.97 - with cooler, fan at full
THM_ - 37/58/39
Core 0 - 35/51/36
Core 1 - 37/53/40
GPU - 53/66/53
HDD - 34/42/34
GPU is sometimes stable at 53-55, but sometimes keeps going on its ride all the way to 65-66 and then back to the min temp'. Anyways.. there it is the temp' with 175.97 for me.. -
where do you get the 175.97 driver version, im still on the stock drivers which dell provided on the driver disk?
i d like to use as your temp readings are better.
i searched in laptopvideo2go but dint find
put me the link. i d like to try those drivers.
ty -
You can get the official 175.97 driver version from the Dell site here:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=6&fileid=261031
Yes it says 8400M GS, but it also applies to the 8600's as well. The reason why you can't find it on the M1530 is because Dell hides these randomly throughout multiple product lines. The 175.97 driver version is found where the Inspiron 1720 is. -
Should I be worried about drivers....or do you think the default setting are okay? I'm expecting my laptop within the next few days...
-
Yeah, the default ones are fine. Its just that some perform better in gaming, some perform better in video playback, etc. Some run at lower temperatures, etc. Theres a lot of factors involved. Though you honestly should not be worried about the default drivers at all as they typically work great.
