Look what I found today walking in my local bestbuy. The guy wouldn't let me turn it on but I managed to convince him to open the box so I can take a look at it. It looks exactly the same as the 1645I was hopping to see a redesigned venting or at least to move the vent from under the lid.The cpu offered is the i5-430 and its selling for $999

Too bad, and I guess it comes with 90W AC as well. I would like to see the inside system too.
Can you ask hime to open it up for us?
-
The only thing I didnt know is the screen resolution, but I bet at this price its the regular 920p.
-
Dell Australia still haven't release xps 1647 T.T ,they stated it but there is no core i5 option in the customise page >.< ,Also does anyone who have dell xps 16 is it heavy to carry around, is it that big(16")? I am planning to bring it to school for graphic drawing etc, going to ditch the dvd rom and see if i could hardwire some lithium battery in it for extra battery life.
-
i wonder why laptop manufacturer design their laptop to suck air from the bottom of the laptop , it will always get blocked by our lap lol
-
Not always, I think thinkpad doesn't.
-
True XD, i like some company like apple who actually put cool concept like unibody into the market, they promote other company to redesign their laptop like hp envy 13
-
Wrong, entirely. I think you maybe confused
1) No nehalem chip has a FSB. The memory controller is integrated on the chip itself, no FSB required. QPI replaced it where needed (MP and connection to x58)
2) With Arrandale Intel removed the integrated memory controller from the CPU and integrated it into the GPU (which is on the same module but not the same die). So you actually have more memory latency to RAM because the memory controller was moved off onto a separate chip.
edit: didnt see he was already corrected sorry -
I went back to Tom's hardware article after reading your reply and you're absolutely right. I'm really surprised that Intel moved the memory controller from the CPU to the GPU die in this update. I guess this release only brings about power consumption improvements then, not performance vs Clarksfield chip. Did the old one have HT/TB?
-
New intel cpus have AES instruction set.
-
I going to try going to bestbuy today with my thumb drive to install some benchmarks apps with TS on the 1647
If you dont hear from me soon then you will see me on the 8 o'clock news
. J/K

Not bad, But save your money for the 32nm Quad Core i7's or Quad Core i9's with 35 Watt TDP.
-
The real problem is when?
-
Oh looking forward to it
-
i9?
Tell me more O_O -
If you can do that... I wonder what else you can put on it
-
Better question is why? I'm returning my quad core to opt for a dual-core, because I can save money and get something that has longer battery life and isn't overkill for what I'm doing with it.
-
There aren't any 32nm Quads planned for mobile or desktop. The only 32nm Westmere Quads that will come out are in Xeon form. Intel's roadmaps are very public and updated frequently. The roadmaps go into 2011 and the next uARCH, Sandy BRidge. On said roadmaps there is no plan for 32nm quads for consumers.
Westmere comes in 2 flavors for consumer.
2C/4T = Clarkdale/Arrandale
6C/12T = Gulftown
Also PS, i9 was a rumored branding/model # for the 6-core gulftown. It's been officially released as an i7 980-X. i9s don't exist.
Thats your first problem, reading Tom's Hardware. All Nehalem based CPUs have HT/TB unless its disabled for a particular model #. -
No new i7s quads?
Any news on when the new i5 and i7 will reach the UK XPS 16? -
Nothing confirmed, at least. Though there haven't been any explicit denials from Intel either. In fact, Intel's complete silence on this issue is kind of creepy.
Well, it's safest to just assume that it's not going to happen. -
Dell Australia is releasing Dell xps 1647 on Monday with Redesigned vent!!
I also asked them about mobility 5000 for dell xps 16, but no info came up -
How do you know? that cant be accurate because simply its not consistent with DELL usa 1647 model which still has the old vent. DELL will not release different models for different regions.
Any links to support your claim? -

I got my 1645 about 3 weeks ago. No problems so far. The screen looks beautiful. However, I haven't started using it for heavy stuff (gaming, etc...), and i'm concerned once i start doing heavy stuff the throttling issue will arise. How's dell return policy? Can I return this and then get the 1647 without having to pay restocking fees?
-
I woudl wait, it sounds like they are going to address this issue. You could always go contact Dell support and notify the tech of the issue, and then get it a confirmation that if they don't resolve the issue you will be issued a refund or exchange. The Dell tech I spoke promised the issue would be fixed, and I have it in writing. With the throttling fixed, it is a superb system.
-
daraj,
you are the one who can solve this question, please go to the BestBuy and ask the (same)seller to dissect the system to see its inside
-
The dell rep will hopefully email me tomorrow about ATI mobility 5000s for 1647
-
Thanks for your reply. Don't get me wrong, I totally love my 1645 so far. But because i've only been using for mild tasks i'm afraid once i start doing heavier stuff i'll get the throttling issue.
Do you think I should call a dell rep and complain or should i just wait until they fix the issue? -
I actually went on chat support a couple hours ago and informed the tech of the issue that I was having with throttling. He wanted to take control of my system, but I said that I was quite familiar with the issue and knew that he couldn't fix anything, and that I had "troubleshooted" the issue myself already. He then informed me that the BIOS was being tested now and should be ready next week. He is going to call me with updates.
More than anything, I did this to document the throttling issue with Dell, that way I have something to go back on, as the tech guarenteed it would be fixed by the upcoming BIOS update. I would suggest everyone do the same, even if you haven't personally experienced throttling. (Chat is helpful as everything is in writing) -

@Pepero
Being Nice? Thats nice. Didnt you read few pages back? I went to Bestbuy and I opened the box for the 1647 and it looks the same as the 1645. I will take additional shots when they display it on the 17th. I didnt mean to hurt your feelings
-
I think he got fired
I didnt see him today. I was going to do some benchmarks on the 1647
-
Haha lol don't worry XD Also core i5 model produce less heat than core i7(quad) yea?
-
They're rated for 10W less at full load. However, in the 1647 it'll be less than that because the onboard GPU is not in use.
-
God that's a nice CSR....I don't have conversations that nice with my friends
-
Yeah!!
Well, his CSR is a female
-
DELL chat never wants to connect for me. Never worked for months
error codes all the time. I think they blocked my IP
-
Can someone clarify this for me.
- Dell 1645 suffers throttle problems, caused by bios and ac adapter being underpowered.
- It gets very hot.
- Releasing a revised 1647 with a new vent.
- Bringing out a new bios.
-
1. The 1645 doesn't have heat issues (in my experience). The 1647 is identical to the previous iterations of the laptop, the difference is the specs.
2. Allegedly. -
haha I knew it. It's just becasue of you.
"Look what I found today walking in my local bestbuy. The guy wouldn't let me turn it on but I managed to convince him to open the box so I can take a look at it. Maybe his manager saw it and told him " why the heck you opened it for him? You're fired"
Take resposibility. lol -
You aint kidding! The usage of "
" was suprising.
-
Lets hope they will release that bios tomorrow that will address the issues.
-
I'm not getting my hopes up but it'd sure be nice. Either way I'm not installing it first...
-
I wouldnt. Last thing you need is brick your laptop especially after what happened recently with the Alienware people.
-
That and they might secretly disable TS and/or 130W PSUs...sounds paranoid but it's not impossible. I'm wary of companies that like to screw people.
-
I am sure that the BIOS update is not coming tomorrow after going through a number of reports in regards to dates. I would think the BIOS update would come nearer to the end of the week.
-
Only one way to find out.
-
Any benchmarks of the a P8700 vs one of the new CPUs? That would be really helpful!

The new cpu's will absolutely smoke the core2 mobile procs. I mean they should they came out, what, 2+ years ago?
Finally SXPS 1647 comes out on Dell Website
