Merely changing the processor to i5, may not solve the inherit HEAT issue with SXPS :(

I just cancelled my 1645 order and got the 1647 with the i7-620M processor and the ATI 5730 graphics. The expected ship date is Feb. 4...Hopefully all the throttling issues are solved. Probably not, but still hoping!

You know that feeling that you have before you hit that "SUBMIT ORDER" ?? confused...Am I doing the right thing?... Should I ?... Should I not? I knew from the get go that the 1645 had throttling issues but I was like @#$k@@#$ THAT i will press that submit button and I hope it will get fixed later. So his post reminded me of I went thru before buying.

I was blissfully ignorant of the situation when I ordered and the i7 had just launched pretty much (I ordered on 10/31). I was ecstatic...until I tried playing Portal, then I tried Fallout 3. I modded the drivers and messed with all types of stuff and eventually the crackling sound/throttling faded and I thought it was over. Then one day while playing Dragon Age it returned with a vengeance. I found this forum and a detailed description of what the issue was with a carefully worded google search lol. I'm not sure which is worse, ordering knowing there's an issue or finding one on your own. :nah:

I was eying the ENVY 15 but if it wasnt for the crappy Customer service, but again i know the envy has same issues. I will probably get the i7 again if fixed, not the i5.
ASUS's upcoming G73JH is looking nicer by the minute.

Asus systems have some nice specs...I just don't want mine bursting into flames. Then again I ran that risk back on the 90W PA lol plus the build quality has never wowed me too much. I do like their netbooks though.

I think we should all just save up for what we all secretly want: A Panasonic Toughbook....Even if they burst into flames, it'll still work!! :) You can put on some oven mits and use itself to beat out its own fire!

Actually I was being quite serious. The 1640 was the one with the heat issue. The 1645's internal components were rearranged and I've experienced no uncomfortable temperatures, even after hours of gaming.

There are no heating issues with the 1645, yet.

For the most part my 1645 is quiet which I take to mean the fan is off or low. In spite of that my temps rarely exceed 62C unless I'm gaming.

Confirmed that it's actually gone and not just hard-to-find. I had one saved in my wishlist on 1/11 and it now says "This item is no longer valid." Going to call and find out what's up.

Currently chatting and calling at the same time. They chat lady tried to tell me that 1645 was the newest model number (after not knowing the difference between a 1640 and a 1645, lol) and so I showed her a quote I got on a 1647. She's been silent since. Haven't gotten off hold on the phone, so I'll have to see how that goes.

Ok so still one day after and the 1647 did not come back so im assuming it wasn't site maintenance it was a deliberate move.
I can clearly say now that the 1647 has been throttled off from the site. :D

I am, however, annoyed that it's not up on the US site, period, much less with the 5730.

Well, mine shipped today. Should get it on the 14th. I guess I will be the first one...

I would have like the 5xxx series video card as I honestly would have preferred the built in IGP graphics as it conserves power, and I don't really care about gaming, but this was the only spec where I could get the top end CPU, SSD, nice wifi/etc. But oh well, that's how it always goes...

the biggest mistake DELL have made is to send 90W adapter to SXPS 1645 (and 1640 with Ati 4670 if you use a high end T-Cpu)

the only SXPS who really handle only 90W is actually SXPS with Ati 3670 and P-Cpu, (thats the rig who eats less power)

this i7 quad SXPS with Ati 4670 eats about 7-10W more and needs a PA-13 Adapter (130W)

After writing an email to the president of Dell France Montpellier, Dell called me.

He called me he knows the problem of throttling and he propose to me a refound of my SXPS 1645 or change my 1645 by 1647 i7 620M (only 4670 available... For him, the 5730 on the Dell CA was a bug and it unaivailable for the moment). But he dosen't recommand to me to change by the 1647 with 4670 because he tested it and he saw the same problem of throttling.....

So he recommand to me for change for free my 1645 :

    Alienware M15x - i7 620M (with refound) - GTX 260M - SSD 256 Go - Intel 5300 - Battery 9 cell - Full HD 15,6".

But I dosen't like the design of the Alienware. So I'm not yet decided...

But according to him, the 1647 with 4670 = THROTTLING ISSUE

Wow that speaks volumes. Dell is not planning to fix this issue at all. Take it man. Just get the black design AW and turn the lights off in the front. Yes its a bit thicker. Ok much thicker, but currently its a better machine then the xps.

The AW is a lot heavier than the SXPS from what I have heard. Personally I dont give a shiz about the throttling issue as 99% of the time I wont be gaming. Hell I would have preferred the built in IGP over the ATI card but oh well. Pics/mini-review/etc will be up tomorrow when it gets delivered. I'm stoked!

EDIT: So who do I contacts to get an official 1647 Owners lounge thread going?
