lol, if you're correct that the 1640 uses 90W, then at full load (of EVERYTHING on the 1645) it uses 56 more watts.

Hi guys, I'm a n00b here. I really need a new laptop for school asap, and was looking to get one that won't get outdated in 2 years. I asked around and most of my friends that use an older xps say it's a great purchase. I really wanted to buy one with the core i7 but given that it's more expensive, I decided to go for the core i5. Now I already placed an order the very first day it was made available, but the shipping isn't expected before 4th Feb. Some of the questions I have are:
1. Has anyone else placed an order for the core i5 xps?
2. Does anyone know if they're already shipping or when they might be expected to ship (regardless of dell's expected date of 4th feb)?
3. With regard to the core i5 itself - how much of an advantage does it have over the Core 2 Duo (P series)?
4. I read some reviews about the sxps 16 with a P8700 processor, and most of them complain about the laptop getting unbearably hot after a bit of gaming. Has this been addressed in the recent sxps range (i.e. the ones with core i7)?
5. What exactly is the throttling issue? I gather the system severely restricts the performance of the processor, and using a 130W adapter seems to be working. Any idea if Dell is fixing this on all new systems? (I'm afraid the one I purchased might have the same issue, in which case there's no point in buying this, is there? I'd rather go for a C2D instead - it'll be much cheaper). What are the chances a 130W adapter might fry the system sooner?
6. I'm not sure of Dell's return policy - I purchased it off Dell.com - can anyone help? (never looked into it cos I didn't think I'd have any reason to send it back!)
7. Gaming - I hope to play a few new games on my laptop. How would the performance be on a core i5 520M + ati 4670 1GB? I gather the GPU is mid-range, but would there be issues playing games like COD MW2 at regular settings? (assuming the throttling is fixed)
A lot of questions - I'm sorry! Please let me know if you can throw some light on any of these. I'm really really confused now, and am uncertain as to whether I should return/cancel my order and go with the Sony F series altogether...
Thanks a ton! -
3. It's better. Dunno by how much, but I'd guess about 10%-20%.
4. Yes.
5. Near nil chances.
6. 21 business days
7. You should be fine playing at normal settings. -

I wouldn't expect the Core i5 520M to perform much worse than the 540M. Upgrading to the 128GB HD (if you don't mind the reduced capacity) would probably give you a far more noticeable performance boost (plus longer battery life and less heat) than the upgrade to the dual core, Core i7. -
According to my commercial, the 1647 + 4670 + RGBLED have the similar throttling issue of 1645. That's why he changes my 1645 by M15x.
And now, we have the confirmation on LesDelliens Forum
1640 + RGBLED + P9700 (TDP 28W) = throttling with max brightness.
According to Notebookcheck's test too, http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Dell-Studio-XPS-16-ATI-HD4670-Notebook.21328.0.html
They note that the SXPS 1640 (with P9700 + RGBLED + 4670 in their test) throttling, in some games the fps very variable and the AC is very hot.
They report at the end of test, many peoples report to notebookcheck the same problem of throttling.
Conclusion : It's very likely that the SXPS 1647 should throttle -
I never experienced throtteling on my XPS 1640 (P8600 + RGBLED) with max brightness. I reduced the CPU voltage with RMClock from the beginning which reduces the overall power consumption by approximately 10W.
I never tried if there is any throtteling with standard voltages.
The test from notebookcheck measured a power consumtion of 86W under load with a P-series CPU. A 90W power supply is too weak for a system with T-series CPU or i7. I wouldn't even use it with the P-series.
I really wonder why dell did not change the PS when they changed the graphics card and introduced the i7. They must have made the same measurements and be aware of the problem before delivery for sure. -
tatrus the issue only affects the i7 I believe.
I spoke to Dell and it appears that the new CPUs will be available in the UK on Monday, there will also be a few other changes! The bios issue should also be fixed by Monday too! -
Oh sorry, my mistake!
-
Thanks!! Though I'm not sure about whether I want to keep my sxps when I get it anymore - dunno if it'll have the throttling addressed. One question though - any idea if it's possible to upgrade the graphics chipset if need be in the future? (i.e. to the 5000 series, when it becomes available) -
Does It come with USB 3.0? Now, HP and Lenovo have already refreshed some of their Laptops equipped with USB 3.0 such as Envy 15 and Lenovo ThinkPad W 510.
How about Dell? any? -
) will be be shipping with SuperSpeed USB. 3.0

What do you guys think about this $999 deal at Best Buy? Seems like a real nice price (maybe you can even use a 10% coupon they send out every so often). I really would like the leather (I think) and the RGBLED screen but that's going to add substantially to the cost.
In fact, if I'm looking at everything correct, Dell even has a VERY similar model on their website for $1349 (BB is i5-420 and Dell is i5-520)

I understand from the Dell Studio 17 (1747) Review done on December 6 on NotebookReviews.com, that the case has changed from a glossy finish to a rubbery one. Would you expect that Studio XPS models would also move to the rubberized finish at some point?
I also understand that the new Intel 6300 WiFi N card requires 3 antennas to increase throughput - I think that was true of their older 3x3 cards too. Does anyone know if XPS's have 3 internal antennas?
I notice that the Intel specs I've seen only show support for DDR3 1066 memory, but Dell appears to be selling both 1066 and 1333 memory (at different prices). The part number on a i520 based Studio XPS 16 I configured was 4GB1333. I doubt seriously that the faster memory will yield any perceivable performance increase in interactive work, but it does yield a price increase that is easily perceivable. What's up with this? Do the i5xx's actually support DDR1333 in spite of what Intel's specs currently say?
And finally, I thought the WiDi stuff Intel announced (easy use of an HDTV as a remote screen - requires a $100 box that is available at Best Buy now). This seems like a natural fit for Dell's Studio and Studio XPS brands, but I haven't seen it mentioned. Anyone with any info on this?
Sure smells to me like the Studio XPS is due for a refresh.
Sorry for asking so many questions in my first post. Please ignore those you have no interest in.
Thanks,
Dan -
The 1647 arrives on UK Dell site but for the i5 with Wled 720p screen, 320gb hard drive is £999
i7, RGB 1080p, 500gb hard drive is £1119. Only £120 more. The RGB screen is normally £170 upgrade on iots own. It seems Dells pricing structure is done by 10 year olds.Been waiting a while for this but it seems way expensive compared. -
Just got back from best buy where I got my hands on a sxps 1647
- It does not have switchable graphics. Not even a mention of the integrated GPU in the BIOS
-There is a vent in the rear, looks like for the gpu. Lots of small perforation on the bottom.
-Still has a 90w adapter according to the BIOS. I couldn't see the actual brick though. -
-
For whatever this is worth (and it may well be zero), was at BestBuy today and I played around a bit with the new 1647. I loaded up the Dark Knight 1080p trailer on youtube, a clip that would always force the 1645 I returned (i7, RGBLED) to throttle so badly it was almost as if the system crashed. It played fine on the 1647 (i5, 1600x900 screen). Then again, it also played fine on my old Thinkpad T61. I even tried playing a few clips at once to see if I could make it throttle but I could not. Without the RGBLED, and with i5 the 90W MAY (dont know without running real benchmarks) be enough. I'm still done with Dell though, at least with the Studio XPS 16...
-
Thanks a lot cuoog.
Although you couldnt make any demanding test, this info is really helpful. For me at least. -
I'd really like to buy an XPS, but how old is the 4670 card? Isn't it over a year old? Am I wrong to question spending good money on this system for a graphics card that is over a year old?
I won't be gaming on this, so I don't know if I should be concerned with the throttle issue or not? -
-
If I can find a BB that doesn't have a restocking fee, I'm planning to pick up the 1647 in the next few days and maybe I can have a look thru the BIOS (if nobody is able to do it first).
