If this is just a Windows 7 issue, you could always get Ubuntu for a bit. I really liked how it can be installed/uninstalled through Windows, so when I didn't need it anymore I just uninstalled it in a minute or so, and it even removed the option from the boot manager. I'm not sure exactly what you do with your laptop (in terms of necessities), but if it's all internet/word processing Ubuntu/OpenOffice works as a temporary fix for the messed up profile. I'm not sure if it's necessary or not, but I did install Ubuntu to a separate partition.

Thanks for the suggestion. I might try that if I can't get things fixed. The idea of a clean install at this point is beyond nauseating. Blech!

I googled my problem and found a solution through Windows 7 troubleshooting. As a matter of fact, it fixed the problem for me. Pretty cool. Now I'm a happy camper again. :D

BTW... I tried putting my 1640 in the travel case I bought for my 1530, but I think too much of the top/bottom of it is exposed without padding. So... guess I'm going to be looking for a new one though I'm going to ask Dell for sleeve. I can always try, right? ;)

Looking forward to hearing your news tomorrow.

Oh I'm glad you got your problem solved! :D Win 7 Troubleshooting is nice! ;) Certainly, I think yes..you should ask Dell for a new sleeve!! My sleeve is already on it's way, so I will take measurements of it if you'd like once it arrives! Just let me know!!

Yes, I hope tomorrow brings better news. I keep checking the status..I need to stop doing that..and just let it happen. That's usually when I have par better luck!!

I'm even checking by my Service Tag number on my 1530 to see if the Status has changed via that.

Wow I got my laptop today and it only took 2 weeks. There are a couple of problems though. They gave me one with the 3670 GPU which is worse than the 8600. When I tried to use the new service tag on the online chat it ways it was purchased outside of the country (US) and I need to pick a different country. I knew it was too good to be true when I saw the box on my porch. I wnet on chat and they seem like they wont do anything about it and will have a problem resolution guy call me back. If i end up having to buy a motherboard with the 4670 off ebay does anyone know the PN? I looked and none of the post tell what GPU they have just the PN like: D/PN: P743D.

    @Cin'

Yeah they transferred the the warranty over. I was disappointed to found out they gave me a 3670 which feels about the same as the 8600 and looks like they will not do anything about it.

Does anyone know where I can buy the 1640 motherboard with the 4670? I checked ebay but they don't say what GPU they have just the P/N.

No word???? No knock at the door?

Still a little iffy about Windows Live Mail. But that's it. Other than that, I have to say at this point I'm in love with my computer!:swoon: Can't imagine going back to the 1530.

That's good, I'd be pretty mad if any 8600 owner received 3670's. I still feel sorry for Nathan.

In other news, netbooks are boring. I'm back to playing Pokemon on my DS lol.

Even with all the problems, I really do miss my M1530. A gaming worthy fire-hazard is better than no gaming machine at all.

Well it took about 48 hours for the first Order Number (that was canceled due to an "error"). And then, about a week later on the 18th the "factual" order number showed up...so all in all about 12 days. I got in contact with Dell on 1/6, Order Number on 1/18 w/Specs...Still waiting!! Almost 3 weeks!

    Still patient. (somewhat).

It's okay to be honest with yourself Cin, being on a netbook for that length of time is infuriating. You have every right to be impatient, I hope you get it soon!

I'm already going nuts after less than a week without my M1530 lol. It will all be worth it eventually.

That was fast; did it really come with Vista though? Give us some 3dmark06 comparison scores :p If you can find a program that is compatible with the 4670 for temperature monitoring I'd be interested to know what it is, hwmonitor didn't work when I tried. Best of luck with your new machine! (if you hear anything strange from the drive, back it up immediately  Seagates are scary lol)

Also, along with the Seagate comment, my friend finally got his Asus back with a new hard drive.

I can't wait to get my 1530 back.

it ran about 55 degrees while playing wow, compared to 80-90 that my m1530 ran at, both with a cooler. unfortunately it did come with vista 64 bit but considering how beastly the cpu is i wont complain. i have not ran a benchmark on it so not sure what it is atm.

It's totally worth it to get 7 lol. Those temperatures are similar to the ones I reached while using auto cad. Since WoW is cpu dependent that T9600 should serve you well. :D

What cooler are you using? I have a cheap Belkin one that I picked up at one point. I was thinking about the NZXT Cryo LX. It would also be good for an M17x whenever I get it. Both the sxps 16 and the M17x have the intakes near the back.

I spoke to my XPS Support Rep today....(at home ill) :(
He said it's still being "built", but it should ship next week. And, he never understood why they kept the Automated Number working..as it spits out erroneous information most of the time, and apologized. So, if all works out accordingly, I "should" have my 1640 by end of next week. :)

The Sleeve I ordered, was just delivered this morning! LoL, when I answered the door and the FedEX guy was standing there...for a split sec' I thought...OoohH...he is delivering my 1640....  :p

I can be patient a bit longer.

    Yeah, the Netbook = crazed..already. :( Next week! :) I understand being without your 1530.... ;)

    Cin,

You're going to be getting a new shiny, red 1640!!! It has to be new or it wouldn't be taking this long. On the other hand... why so,so long?

Guess you don't have a choice about being patient. Can you tell anything about the sleeve? I looked at carrying cases last night at Staples. Couldn't find a nice one for a 16" that wasn't $99. So I'm waiting. Still have to call Dell about my sleeve and the fact that Adobe Premier Elements won't install on 64 bit.

    Hope you feel better soon.

BTW....I'm still LOVING my computer, refurb and all.

Hello there Alexander, and welcome to the NBR Forums, those temps are quite high if you ask me. Now, I dont own this laptop, and cannot say the average, but my Envy runs at mid 40s with an i7 inside..and tops at 86 at full blown 100% usage.

Have you cleaned the laptop? The vents are not being obstructed by anything?

Hello friend thanks for the welcome! Just wipe and 4 months ago they changed the thermal paste. The place where my laptop is a clear table and without battery to not spend it.
I recommend calling Dell? I CC warranty until February.

PS: excuse me if my English is a bit technical I do not speak much.

Try this, download HWMonitor ( http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php) and post a screenshot of your temps, with the task manager too.

It is quite high the temps, and they shouldn't be that high at almost idle...

I have some pics of the case..I put my 1530 in it last night. I couldn't help myself. I think the 1640 will fit in there nicely. I will measure it tonight for you when I get home.

Please note that this Notebook Case, also comes in other colors! :)

    It's nicely "padded".

    @ brewmastr

I noticed when you are on battery power it throttles GPU, CPU or something. I asked about it on DELL chat, they said they will send a replacement so I requested the 4670. I bought a motherboard with the 4670 off ebay before that but need a different cooling unit. You could also request the 4670 if they haven't finished building it. My friend was told he was getting the 3670 so he said it was worse than the 8600 and they changed it to a 4670.

ok so got on dell chat to express my "concern" over recieving the 3670 video card, spoke with a supervisor and he is putting through a request for the 4670 video card as the machine is in pre-production right now. (literally i have been refreshing the my account screen all day, so got on dell chat 5 minutes after my order # popped up) we will see what happens, cross your fingers please! could unfortunately mean a long wait though :(

Well glad they are switching you out to the 4670. Did they give you an "estimate" of how long your "build" would take? Mines in boxing..took about 2 weeks.

no estimate unfortunately, they cant even say it is for sure that dell will honor the request. but the supervisor did submit the request and said it would be monday-tuesday before an answer would be recieved on the matter. Then followed to say if the request is honored they may have to cancel and redo the order which could cause further delays, but my main concern is getting this exchange right from the get go. however the 2.8ghz with 6mb cache processor is a plus so if they dont change it out i may just end up gettin a motherboard with the 4670 and swapping it in, cross your fingers for me!

Oh OH :( Well, I'm hoping (fingers tightly crossed) that they do move you to the 4670! As, well they should. I hope they don't have to cancel & redo the order. You have been waiting to just get to the point of getting into the production status! ;)

Thanks! :) I hope so..that silly Automated dial is so farked up it's pathetic. Says its in boxing..being prepared to ship ~ and my ESD is 2/19/10 - ROFLMAO!~ :twitchy: :err:

I'm hoping and praying to receive it by next Wednesday...I know its bad, but I already plan on working a half day the day Scarlett2 is being delivered. So, I can be here...In case the FedEx Driver leaves her at my door..in the "cold".

Oh, I sure will on the sleeve..I will have lot's of pics! :D

The end is near! :D That sleeve s cool, it doesn't look too good from the outside, but the inside looks really nice.

I'll probably get my M1530 back on Monday or Tuesday. I miss my toaster. :(

Before I send it back for good at the end of this nonsense, I.m going to take pictures of it with aluminum foil on it cooking bacon.

I really hope you can talk then into a 4670 msboc.

Saying that I'm getting it next week is just speculation. With a seven day turnaround time and it not arriving today, it better be here early next week. Unless they ship it during the weekend, which I don't see happening.

I'm amazed by how much I miss this problematic computer. It's my baby!

Okay thanks leave me alone to know that. Now my question, I recommend extending the warranty a year? I expires next month. Which of the two I recommend guarantees, Complete Care or Next Business Day In-Home?

    Greetings and Thanks

Hello people, it's seems that I've become lucky (blessed) enough to join your M1530 exchange club. The dell technician came in the other day (28th) to change my Mobo, heatsink, and my mouse pad area (because my computer wasn't going to sleep when I closed the lid). This was my third Mobo/heatsink change in the last year and half!!

So the dude came and luckily Dell forgot to send the new graphics card with the mobo and I was like "this is ridiculous." What was the point in him coming if he couldn't even replace the faulty graphics card that was overheating again? So as I was friendly with the dude the whole time, he let's me in on this whole Dell Exchange thing. I was like "WORD!" because I didn't think it was possible.

So he tells me (even though he said he wasn't supposed to :) ) that he was gonna call Dell and that he'd tell them that I, the customer, was really upset. Then it'd be up to me to act like the very upset customer on the phone and request that I didn't want this laptop anymore. Funny enough, it was very easy to act upset because I was actually really upset with this laptop and the GPU issues it's been causing me. (and my warranty is less than a year from expiration too)

So...I pull it off and the person talks to their supervisor and puts me through for an exchange...SWEEETTTTT!!! So they gave me a dispatch number only. And now the long wait begins for me. Hopefully I'm as lucky as you guys and get an xps 16 with an Ati 4670, and 2.8ghz processor. I think i should get the blu-ray drive too right? (I have it in my current m1530, specs below). So I was wondering how long do you think I wait before I can find out my specs, because it seemed to vary for all you guys? (Jan. 29th order) I can't wait...but I will have to because the "patient dog eats the fattest bone" right? It ain't gonna be easy tho...

    (I hope I didn't write too much, sorry :p )

It just depends on what they decide, if you have blu-ray though you will get it in your new system, but your really at there mercy as far as other specs, i have the 2.6 ghz processor in my 1530 right now which is why i think they put me down for a 2.8, but however they also stuck me with a 3670, which i have a request in to change to a 4670 from a supervisor so we will see, but it will take about 2 weeks to get your information of what you will be recieving, regardless the specs will exceed what you currently have.

The other variable is whether you will get a new or a refurb 1640. I don't know how many here got new computers for their 1530s. I got a refurb. But there was not a scratch on it and it's operating like a dream. (Keeping my fingers crossed.)
