    Not at all;
I just had the standard warranty thing, but after 5-6 mobo/heatsink replacements, a calm explanation, i EMAILED unresolved issues. :)

Well, I got a 1645 refurb for a replacement and I've been loving it. Specs have been upgraded in every area, I even got a blue ray player now (BD-RE UJ235A). Problem is that it doesn't work. I tried updating driver and firmware to no avail. It's making some crazy sounds and sometimes won't eject the disk. Un-freaking believable!

At least some of you are having some better luck with your systems. I really was starting to think better of Dell again, don't they test these things before shipping?

Weird things happen with optical drives, the current dvd writer in my M1530 can't recognize cd's at all, but it can still write dvd's. I never cared about the optical drive enough to even bother getting it replaced, I just use flash drives to move most of my stuff around.

This is a huge bummer for me cause I use my optical drive a lot, I'm always burning something. I'm still waiting to hear back from them and I'm guessing they'll just send someone out to fix it, which is ok I guess cause I do really like this new system. Just hope the Dell rep is a competent one and doesn't bust up my housing like the last one did.

We dont have DELL reps here, we just have Dell certified technicians, and one of them just tore apart the palmrest;at first i didnt notice, until my 3rd mobo exchange; in which Another dell tech just filled in a palmrest replacement form and within a week i was good :p

I received another email back today with a dispatch number. There still isn't anything to see really, but at least something is happening. I'm impatient to know what the specifications will be. Here's hoping for a refurbished one so it can ship quickly!

I hope they fix it for you also! ;)

The 15.6" is little larger than the 15.4" (1530), I really like it. :) More room, and space to work with. And just everything is "amazing" about it! It doesn't overheat in my lap...good enough! XD

Mine was like 3 times. Then, I finally got on "chat support" at the last GPU fail, and asked them how many more times they were going to send a Technician out to replace the Mobo etc! How much more wasted time for both of us did they want to go thru. (said firm, and politely).

How is it working brew? :D Lovely? Do you like it, alot? :p XD

Keep each time you have the GPU replaced, logged. When this one fails (which it prolly will)...I bet they replace it! :)

Oh, I bet that is when you will be approx. receiving your replacement lappy! :) Any new, updates?

Grat's on finally getting a replacement in the process, Ben! :) Nice specs! The 1640 rocks awesome!

Week 2 on this baby, and still luvin it :) :)

My 1530 was picked up and returned to Dell on Wednesday....

Hey Cin' please I have some question. I'm about to send my m1530 back and I was wondering what you used to wipe your laptop clean. I think you might have mentioned the Nuke program right? What version of it? Did you do anything else, like do a clean install of Vista (as I currently have windows 7 that I bought and don't want to return that back to them :))? And lastly did you send anything else back apart from the laptop itself (like the old installation discs or the adapter)? I don't think I wanna send any thing else back apart from the laptop and the battery :)

Hey..I used DBAN. I used RevoU..to uninstall just a few programs (though not needed..I just did anyways).
    I used this Version: dban-beta.2006042900_i386.iso
Burned it to disk (from my 1640), and dropped it into my 1530, and let it do it's magic.

I let DBAN do the long process (where it does the full 3 passes)..it took several hours (did it overnight). But when I woke up in the AM, and found "no bootable devices found"....I was a happy person as it was "done". I knew DBAN did it's job! XD :) Here is a LINK, "Download Darik's Boot and Nuke 2.0.0 ".

The only thing I sent back to Dell was the 1530, and the battery & brick! :) That is all they wanted. They told me they didn't want any of the disks, etc back at all! ;)

    Hope that helps!

    Cin...

Thanks a lot Cin'. They want the brick as well???! I don't know if if wanna send that one back. This one doesn't get as warm as the one the XPS 16s ship with. I might just keep it and see if they say anything. :D . Does DBAN clear the operating system? T-minus 1 day until the M1530 gets NUKED!!! Heck I might overdo it and nuke twice, lol. That would probably render my "toaster" useless (and take a while)...and no more crispy bread :( :p .

Yeah, it's a nice program! :) I enjoyed dbanning my 1530!! XD (A friend lol's at my use of "dbanning" words) :p

NP! :D They asked if I could send it back to do it..And, I didn't mind! :) So, I think it is up to you.

DBAN cleans up your HD & cleans up your lappy very nicely! I didn't worry about cleaning up anything else after I used DBAN per se. Toast that baby well! XD.

Oh, BTW..right now I am using the 6 cell battery they shipped me on my lappy, and so far the usage is very nice. I wanted to test it out before I sent back my 6 cell for my 1530 (to make sure it worked well).

Sorry for the confusion, I was saying thanks for knowing all I need to send back is the M1530, battery, and brick. I already have lots of options for wiping discs.

Edit: But now I'm curious enough to try that program!

If you can try the program you should! I like this 6 cell battery..pretty cool. And, watching movies on the 1640 is pretty awesome also! Your gonna enjoy this lappy!

It is working great Cin' the 4670 is so much more powerful than the 3670 and I am soooooo happy dell made good on the deal. as well this laptop is a breeze service wise, i thought the m1530 was easy but this one takes the cake in simplistic design. If you download the service manual there is no reason one cant perform repairs/upgrades simply. I right now am toying with the idea of a SSD, i score 6.7's across the board in my WEI except for hard drive which is a 5.9. if i upgrade the memory so i can run a ram disk and put a SSD in this thing im sure it would scream, something to think about at least. My 1530 went back to dell on tuesday. i think i have adjusted to the 1640 quite well. And Dell has saved face with me.

Hey Cin, you were right "dbanning" takes the cake!!! It was very relieving and exciting for it to finish and then say "No bootable devices found" I was like "wow," what a program. Now to wait for these Fedex people to come and pick up this bad boy. I'm just going to keep my adapter, and now I have 3 (m1530 90w, xps 1645 90w, and new 130w)!! Totally unnecessary really, but do I care???....NO! lol. Im straight up  Thanks for your help.

Supa! :D Glad things are working so well for you now! So many awesome ++++'s on this lappy' compared to the 1530, that's for sure!

WahOOT! I'm happy to hear that the "dbanning" worked out for you. It was really easy to use :) When are they picking up the 1530? Hey, cool that your keeping the adapters!! I got a new tote ordered today for my lappy, and on Weds, I am ordering a new Messenger bag that will work really nice with her! :) Got that BT Mouse also today!

I hope everyone else is doing well with their replacement 1640s, also! ;)

I don't really have anything to report. Maybe this indicates I'll end up with a new one instead of a refurbished one. I was really hoping for a refurbished one since I just want to reinstall my programs, organize my files, and get on with using my laptop. Right now anything important is just stored on my external drive and assortment of flash drives.

BAM, got my replacement on the way.

    What I had to do:
    - Purchased may 08
    - Overheating issues, replaced motherboard aug 09
    - Bad heat sink installed, motherboard, cpu etc, replaced again aug 09
    - Overheating again, motherboard replaced feb 10'
    - after replacement, temps still high, sent a hwmonitor screen shot to dell tech, he talked to his manager, and replacement coming in 3 weeks.

You sure do love accessories Cin'. For some reason I imagine that your laptop has a closet of its own accessories like you do for clothes. :D . Enjoy...

Hey guys, i've read most of your posts and was inquiring about mines.
I have a M1530 (T8300), 8600m gt, 3gigs of ram. Its been a while but most of the time when i game, (not even graphic demanding games, just games like Heroes of Newerth) the screen would flicker... and i have seen the temps while gaming and my gpu has gone as high as 95 degrees. Usually the flickering doesn't bother me alot but my rapid reponse depot warranty has like 150 days left so maybe it's time to try and get them to replace my gpu? From what i've been reading in this thread, it seems as if Dell has given up replacing M1530 parts and just sending the studio xps 1640 as a replacement?

I really should call in and see what they can do for me since i remember them adding the extra year of warranty for the 8600 but i do not see any of in ym account besides the rapid response depot...

so what do you guys think i should do?

I am also curious to know if anyone has received a 1640 replacement within the 1 year GPU warranty extension. My original warranty is up in May so I'm trying to decide what to do with my m1530.

Well, it's prolly arrived back to Dell by now.. :) Mine arrived back, and the "charge" amount was cleared off my account (like that a lot)!

Oh, yes...I love my accessories. I'm ordering a Belkin Cushtop lapdesk for it to sit when in my BR, and a laptop cooler now. Prolly getting a Zalman. :) HaHa...Yes, I actually do have a little "walk in accessory closet" specifically for Scarlet2! NOT! :p XD.

Best thing to do is to keep track of those temps, have any problems/issues that you have had in the past, and now going forward ~ logged (including service calls)...and hop on "Dell Chat". That is where most of us have had the best luck, is with a Chat Rep vs. a Phone Rep. Being firm and not demanding a replacement lappy, will prolly get you somewhere.

I basically said to the Rep, "how many more times is Dell going to send a Tech to replace the Mobo", etc.

Mine was within my actual warranty. I can't remember if anyone w/in the 1 year warranty extension had a replacement as a result. I need to go back and look. Perhaps, if someone else is looking at the thread, they can also add in! :)

If you have had issues with your GPU, you may want to contact XPS Support to see if there is anything they are willing to do. :)

Actually I just checked Fedex and Dell just got it today. Glad its back there. Strangely, they never had any "charge" on me as they didn't have any of my info. so I was pretty cool in those regards. :)

If you do happen to get the Zalman (NC2000 right?) could you tell me how it is? I've been thinking about getting one of those as this lappy has a strangely angled exhaust vent (pointing at the bottom left of screen).

My replacement has been requested. My current specs are a T7400, 3GB Ram 8600M GT, 64GB SSD, and 1680x1050 upgraded display. What kind of specs am I looking at for a replacement from experiences?

From what everyone else has been getting so far, it's pretty much seemed to be random specs that are equal or better than the M1530.

I also have reason to think that mine will be new and not refurbished like I requested. This is taking longer than I'd hoped.

How long have you been waiting? Mine was requested on the 18th. No word on what it is yet. I'm hoping for a i7 and I don't think they have a 64gb SSD anymore, so hopefully a 128gb SSD.

And, yes...I am more like going to be ordering the Zalman NC-2000. Sure, I will provide feedback on how it it working out for me (if you want pics, I can do that to...you know how I like taking pics)! :p :D

Right now, I'm doing price comparisons, and so far amazon is the cheapest at around $57 :)

    Hey!

The entire replacement process takes about 3-4 weeks. It was nearly at 3 1/2 weeks for me :)

    HAHA....what imagery...

I never knew my specs until Dell called me and told me my replacement was at my front door. All in all, mine took only 3 business days . It was a refurb but a very new one, and my specs were a LOT better than my M1530 (compare in sig.). I feel like they just had this one lying around and threw it my way when it sorta fit my M1530 specs (Blu-ray probably helped). You'll at least be getting and SSD  , good luck!

The thing is AMAZING! I'll admit the reds are slightly pinkish but otherwise, I was so shocked it was this good. Better than a LOT of screens out there (HDTVs included).

:( , usually it is...I would call them and complain about it. Remind me of your current processor again? You could find some little spec difference on which to base your argument. And frankly you could maybe get away with saying the 8600 is better than the 3670 and you refuse to take it. Sorry, try to sternly complain though...

I have a T5750. It's not that good now, but it's a pretty good Merom core. It's 2GHz and the highest Merom core was 2.33GHz.

To be honest I'd just deal with the T6600, but I'm not taking a 3670 lol.

According to this page, I think the highest was 2.6 Ghz. Yea the T6600 at least matches the T5750 and is better in most areas. Higher clock speed and bus speed. I agree, fight for the 4670, it's a lot better than the 3670.

    I stand corrected on the cpu's :p

Tomorrow I'll do the Dell chat thing and complain there. One thing that's odd is that apparently I'm getting a nine cell battery. I only had a six on my M1530, and I prefer not to have the extra bulk. I'll request to have either both or only the six cell battery while I address the 3670 "issue". I have no complaints with getting the 1600*900 screen, since I only had a washoutasticwherearemycolors- ccfl WXGA.

I'll post what the specs are as of right now:

@Sirhcz0r, they will probably send you the 6 cell separately, after your system ships. (After you discuss with them).

I had to call and have them send me my 6 cell when I received my replacement.

well, i have found a couple faults with my 1640 thus far, but dell is rectifying them, im sure its just a production build quality thing, but my left hinge trim piece never aligned perfectly from when i recieved it, it was no biggie at first, but its slowly nagging me, so i sent dell a picture and they agreed that it was not right at all and sent me a new screen but when it showed up it was white, but here is the kicker.. its a RGB LED and mine is not lol. hrmm white lid with a black palm rest for RGB LED?? what are your guys thoughts??

Hi all you ex and almost ex-1530ers.

I hope you're loving your 1640 as much as I am. So far, (fingers and toes crossed) I have only good things to say about it. :D

One question... I keep hitting some key which deletes the text of the email I'm writing or another key that sends it. I have no clue what the deal is. Any thoughts?

I would hate to be charged for the replacement lol.

Anyways, I sent my somewhat angry email saying that "going from a 8600 to a 3670 is simply unacceptable".

I hope this works. If it doesn't I'm nowhere near giving up.

So my XPS M1530, purchased March 2008 has had a lot of issues, a Mother Board replaced, Express Card issues, and constant BT and WIFI problems. I finally called Dell and said what is the problem and requested a replacement! The CS rep said they dont do this and I asked her to ask her supervisor, a few minutes later she came back to the line and said it was approved!!!! She said I might not get the same model I had and wanted to know if that was an issue, so I told her that as long as the replacement was atleast the same as mine as far as specs than I would be happy. She put everytrhing through then said it would take up to 3 weeks to get my new laptop. Well I got my new SXPS 1640 today. So far it seems good, I was wondering if you guys would look at the System Configuration of bothe systems and tell me if I should be happy. Can someone also point me to the Bloatware removal?

Everything looks good. They at least matched or gave you better parts. However it looks like they gave you a 6 cell battery, when you had a 9 cell with your m1530. Also I can't tell what graphics card they gave you, as I can't see any thing indicating it? You can call (or chat, preferably) and inquire about the graphics card. You can get either a ATI Mobility Raedon 3670 or 4670, tell them you want the 4670 as the 3670 is arguably worse than the 8600m gt (a slight stretch :)). Then ask for your 9 cell, hopefully you can keep the 6 cell too. Congrats!

As for bloatware, you could reinstall windows 7, if you want (but you'd have to reinstall all the drivers with the black drivers disk they gave you, or online). I didn't reinstall mine as I didn't find the bloatware too bad.

I actually plan on calling Dell about the battery, I didnt receive a remote either and the sleeve is cheap compared to the one I got with my M1530? I got the 3670 how should I go about asking Dell for the 4670 since I had the 8600GT? There is no refurb sticker on the bottom but the Windows sticker looks like it it has been on for awhile as it has a portion that looks a little burnt/worn through?!
