Ok guys here's the unbelievable dealio! I was using my m1530 and I suddenly got "a call." To my surprise, it was Dell, with an automated message. The message said that my replacement laptop had been delivered (in addition to some other mildly important info.). So I checked with mail services at my school and they said I had a package (11 pounds of it, lol). My jaw quite honestly dropped...because with all the experiences of other people in this thread (Cin' most notably) they waited considerably longer times than I did. I was issued a dispatch number on Friday (29th Jan), and now have my xps 16 sitting on my bed Wednesday Feb 3!!!. WOW.

Ok, so from the call I received my order number for the first time, and naturally the specs of my new machine was the first thing I checked. I honestly couldn't believe what I had received. I carefully analyzed the confusing order details and I realized that I had gotten a black leather 1645 with: an Intel Core I7-720QM (1.6GHZ, 6mb smartcache) , 500 GB HDD 7200rpm, 4 GB RAM, 5300 network wireless card, an RGB 1920x1080 screen  , ATI Mobility 4670 :D , 9 Cell (which i didn't even have on m1530) Win 7 Ultimate 64bit, and 4x Blue Ray Drive (expected as my m1530 had it)

I still can't believe it...Obviously the speed in which I received this might mean it's definitely not new, like Cins, but it looks untouched and in really good condition (it also has green refurb. sticker on bottom). I am absolutely "speechless." I was not expecting anything near these specs, the ati 4670 would have made me happy enough.

Now with this throttling issue, I will have to test mine to see. But honestly, I can't really see my self returning (if at all possible for me anymore) something I received as a replacement (no charge!) with THOSE KIND OF SPECS!!! I mean there has to be some natural law forbidding me from doing something like that. :D

Well please tell me what you guys think as this thread has been a big help for me as well, informatively and otherwise... and do i just return my m1530 in the box they sent the unbelievable replacement in or is there another box specifically for that on its way? ....wow.....

    I got my toaster back.

E.D.U., did they send a label with the box to put over the current shipping label?

Edit: That's an amazing machine. I agree, it would only take the 4670 to make me happy, but the rgb led is in there as well! I honestly don't know how a 45nm i7 makes me feel until you stress test it to see if it overheats. Did they give you a 90 Watt or 130 Watt power supply? On the brighter side, even if it does throttle badly, it's probably still faster than your old c2d. Good luck with the new 1645!

After testing to see if my toaster could still make good toast, I found that it can. I went to the Dell unresolved issues page and filled out the form. I'm expecting an email tomorrow, and the good news is the Dell support chat log I received that pretty much means they're going back on their word if I don't get a replacement. I just requested a sxps 16 with a 4670, preferably refurbished because I need it fast.

I hope mines shipped as fast as E.D.U.'s lol. At least having my toaster is better than just a netbook for the meantime.

    Congrats E.D.U.

Looks like you lucked out. :) As far as returning your 1530. I was told to use the box that my refurb came in. (A pitiful excuse for a box compared to Cin's.) I was also sent an email with a return sticker to be printed out. The instructions were to take the old 'puter to UPS which I did. Hopes this helps.

    Cin,

Scarlett is beautiful!! Do you find her faster than your 1530? Mine definitely is. And I've grown to love, love this keyboard.

Yea I saw the label I was just wondering if I used the same box or not. I'm gonna just guess that I do (unless I wouldn't have the label). Sadly I still got a 90W supply. Dell apparently still isn't budging with those. I would have requested a 130w too, but again the speed with which I received this thing was crazy, I had no real communication with them about at all.

I did chat with customer service on Saturday and Sunday (and maybe even Monday) but they all said the same thing, in different ways (ill-informed as always?): One guy said 10 days, the other guy 1 week, another actually said 3-4 weeks  . But barely 3 business days later and I have mine....well bottom line these guys don't know ANYTHING! One guy did however send an e-mail to the "concerned department" so that might have helped expedite things.

I just popped a Star Trek blu-ray into this thing...no noticeable throttling with that (USING MY EYES ONLY, haven't tested with ThrottleS). This was expected with blu-ray's. However let me tell you guys one thing, the RGB screen IS UNREAL. It's like watching/using a high quality premium hd-tv in a 16" size (wait that's actually what it is...lol  ). It's really REALLY GOOD! So good my eyes hurt and a very worthwhile upgrade for people buying it. Speakers are pretty good as well, Loud full and all for a laptop. :p Temps on Blu-ray stay at 55C. I will test gaming soon enough and post it (probably in the throttling thread)

LOL...Sirhczor, I really hope it works out for you. You should tell them that "you don't want this laptop, m1530, anymore" Don't tell them what you want, you will very very likely get the xps 16 as well. Be stern and strict with them but don't be rude. Express your anger (over-dramatize a little if need be) as well and tell them how many times you've had problems with your lappy (GPU and any others). Tell them that your productivity is suffering because of these problems. The funny thing is that all these things are probably true for you as they were for me...I really hope it is successful for you. If you need help with that I can offer advise...

That's pretty much what my notification said. BTW... I was supposed to get to talk to a Dell rep about the specs of my replacement. But before I could, my refurb was on its way.

I'm guessing you're getting a refurb. So far your specs are like mine. Did they list anything else?

I don't remember exactly. Not long at all before I had a tracking number and once I had that, it was here within a day or two.

I was rather blunt about it. I essentially expressed that I didn't care about anything other than getting a 4670, and that I was tired of downtime. I also mentioned that chat I had where I was told that if this (what ended up being a heat sink, not a motherboard swap) didn't work, that I would be able to get a replacement.

I'm glad to hear you like the rgb led, I'm not too concerned about getting one this time around, but I'll definitely get one at some point in the future. Also, is it brighter than a wled? I've never seen an rgb led, the sxps 16 I've tried out had the 1920*1080 wled, which was still nice.

ok so wooooooow, looks like as soon as i get my 4670 i will be performing surgery on her, talked to dell tonight and they are regretably sorry about sending me a 3670, and will be sending me a 4670 motherboard and heatsink, i requested to bypass the onsite tech because i am a tech myself. So as much as it sucks to open a brand new laptop and swap stuff out, its kinda fun at the same time, and you really get to know your lappy in a much more intimate way lol

The bluntness could definitely work too. You know what you want, and you're gonna get it, more direct way :) . The colors on the rgb screen just pop out at you. very, very bright. m1530 pales in comparison.

Well done brewmastr, way to fight for that. If we were not computer savvy Dell would throw crappy-a$$ Latitude E5400's at us and we'd think we were getting good replacements.

msboc, I think you got a t9600 processor (2.8ghz), WLED (1080), Windows home premium 64, 500gb HDD, bluetooth 370, dell wireless 1520....and ofcourse the 90WATT!!! I don't see the graphics card tho? Congrats

got my 1640 today, i guess there is some stuff to get use to, alot more powerful of a machine but alot bigger... actually im only an hour in, so first impressions are still setting in, it is beautiful but i was kinda strangely dissapointed i have no leather accents on my lid, the backlit keyboard is very cool, about to install win7 ultimate and transfer stuff from my old hard drive over, trying to find a sata cable as i have no external hdd, and hey hey dell called me as i was opening the box (i kid you not) to confirm the order for the motherboard with the 4670 card, so i will have that at my doorstep tuesday most likely. GO DELL!!!

    Grat's E.D.U. & brewmastr! :D :D

It's so great to have this lappy! :) I'm still finishing loading & transferring things over...and then have to cleanup the 1530 really well before that go's back to Dell. :)

This lappy' is so sweet. I love everything about it so far. Fixed the BTooth issue..and all is running well.

Getting used to the Screen..It's a lot different then what I'm used to. I chatted with Tech Support yesterday, and advised I didn't receive my 6 cell battery nor travel remote with my lappy! They overnighted both to me, I received them today! :)

Brewmastr...I didnt' receive any return packaging information..I need to contact Dell about that. But I received a Automated Phone Call...they want the 1530 back w/in 10 days! :p

Everything about this lappy remarks of "beauty". :) So quiet and smooth..lulz.

it does appear from your pics you got the RGB led, im really getting used to this WLED 15.6, i am little bit disapointed in it to be honest for asthetics reasons, the colors are great and its bright and vibrant, but it leaves the look of the screen being small with such a large black border surrounding the screen.

well i think after using it for another couple hours im adjusting to it just fine, Just got off chat Cin.... We were SUPPOSED to recieve a pre-paid label with our laptops, the rep told me he would e-mail it back to me, i also expressed that i would like to keep the box the laptop came in (the black box that was inside the cardboard box that is) in case of any reason i would need to pack it up in the future and he said that is fine, to just pack it up in any box with adequete protection and ship it back using the label. As well they will be shipping me the 9-cell battery in exchange for the 9-cell i ordered a couple months back for my 1530 and the travel remote, I do have to say i am a VERY HAPPY dell customer! had to edit to add, these are the most awesome laptop speakers i have ever had, im listening to music right now and given they are laptop speakers and can only do so much, i would say these are incredible!

It's a stupid system. I had to call Dell and ask for them to send me a label via email.

Ooops didn't see you got the information. I think this lappy is awesome. I hope it stays healthy. I agree thought that the black border and the large hinge with the screws is pretty nasty. But the colors are bright and it moves along at amazing clip!!

got everything transferred my old machine to my new machine tonight, and for the record the windows upgrade works GREAT!, you just go into your start menu and type in "windows anytime upgrade" and enter your key (for me it was a copy of windows ultimate i purchased a few months back at the microsoft employee store) and 20 minutes later im running ultimate with no problems at all. recieved shipping notification for all my goodies today, they are shipping me a heatsink, motherboard (with 4670 card), laptop bottom (are they diffrent between the boards???) 9-cell battery and travel remote. GO DELL!!!

    hmmm.... after reading this thread

I hope the 1340 and 16** SXPS's don't go the route the 1330 and the 1530 did in the near future :(

I love my 1340 and since I'm a student the portability and performance is mind blowing sometimes, and everywhere I go I always get compliments whether its in class or at Starbucks lol

The Arctic White lid is so beautiful !!!! ... and from what I here it's rare too :p

And congrats on the lappys guys ... I wanted a 16** with a RGB screen but just wasn't practical enough for me

That's cool brewmastr, sounds like you got everything going now. :) . Dell can really impress sometimes, but the sad thing is that when they're not impressing they're sort of disappointing. No clear middle ground for them, though I'm seeing good signs of improvement. Enjoy this lappy, it's a real beast, hopefully more so when the throttling and, possible, exhaust fixes come round. It will be soaring from then on...

@Sirhcz0r. I would suggest calling them, asking to speak to a supervisor (or manager), and expressing your great discontentment with your m1530. Detail all the problems that you've been having, and all the fixes, on dell's part, that haven't worked. Then say you don't want the laptop anymore as it's harming your productivity. Then hopefully what happens next will be good for you (if anything does happen)... ;)

Yes, I'm 99.9% certain I did...and it's quite lovely..Just getting used to it finally after cleaning up Scarlet1....The screen is amazingly "bright" and the "Color Infusions" Woah! And, the "black border" for me, just adds to it's uniqueness!

I finally used DBAN and nuked the HD. So, I'm finally all set to send her back so Dell.....

I know, I know I shouldn't be sad..but I am sort of Melancholy right now, as I had her for a little over 2 years she was a good first lappy for me ~ when the GPU wasn't give me troubles! :)

I have to contact Dell on Monday, and have them e-mail it to me..I had things going on yesterday, that I wasn't able to get on Chat to have them e-mail me a label.

I will also be keeping the box that it came in. In fact, I believe I still have my original 1530 box it came in. I will just send it back in that. If not, we have plenty of boxes at work ~ I can recycle from them to use for packaging my 1530 for return.

The speakers are sweet..I was blasting and testing them as much as I could! I'm now looking at some Messenger Bags for purchase. The one I have is a "tight fit". I will still use it. But I also want a new one..just to have for the lappy.

Looks like none of us got return labels! Hard to believe! :p XD

I found my first official background for my lappy this morning! I was so excited!

Uber sweet! :) When is your Mobo' arriving?

Thanks! :) I can't wait to take mine out for the first time! Prolly later this week when meeting a friend for coffee, as such!

Get on Chat with your information regarding Unresolved Issues..Or better yet..If you still have your original information you input into the Unresolved Issues Form, "resend it" again. It doesn't hurt. Your not going to be bothering anyone at Dell. They are there to help you, the customer. And, you have that documented information from "chat" already regarding replacing your 1530!!

    Cin...

they will replace the motherboard of my XPS1530 because of GPU issue (heat).

if they replace the motherboard, will the heat issue will gone or this is temporary only?

will they do a clean install or nothing will change on my system (software installed, etc.)?

also can i send my laptop for motherboard replace without my HDD?

    thanks

I can only speak from my experience. Two motherboards. Still overheating. At that point Dell offered to replace the computer. I didn't even have to ask. I think they were getting pretty nervous. I was on the phone with them when it overheated and while I was describing how hot it was, it shut off.

Why do you think they've replaced our laptops voluntarily? Has to be something other than an altruistic gesture.

hey! i didn't know there was a thread on this...
... then again i haven't been on nbr for a while now.

i've had my m1530 since my second semester (first year) of college, and i'm now in my third year... and it has always had a problem with heat. didn't care enough to change out the thermal compound, under-volt, etc. since i got a deal were i got free three years warranty with it.

in december my mobo crashed and dell sent a tech to replace it. i watch him do it and noticed that he didn't use any thermal compound when he put everything back. nevertheless, i started noticing my cpu and gpu idling around 78 C and 85 C respectively, so i contacted dell and they're now in the process of sending me a xps 1640 w/ ati hd4670. however they told me they would do this the week before christmas... and it's now february and i havent received my system >:[

look at me just jabberin' on... it's nice to know that some of you have gotten your replacements.

    <edit>
i noticed i wrote nothing on the topic "GPU fails"...
my gpu was performed pretty bad before the overheating problems occur. i would get 20-25 fps and dips to 10-15 playing old games such as CS:S and TF2.

OooHH...sweet! Well, hopefully the "anesthesia" won't last that long..and surgery will go quickly and smoothly! XD.

Contact Dell, if you have a GPU issue with your 1530 they will replace your Mobo, etc....and it will take care of the overheating..most likely though, it will only be a "temporary fix", unless you get "lucky".

I take it, you don't have Onsite Repair?

Contact Dell tomorrow, and find out where your replacement is! You should have had it by now! They told me when they were setting up my replacement, that the whole process normally takes 3-4 weeks! :) And, I did receive it at nearly the 4 week mark!!

Then take me....I was told when they were setting my replacement up that the whole process took 10 days. Another technician told me 3-4 weeks. One other one told me 1 week. I got mine in 3 business days flat. I'm not trying to rub anything in but call them pronto and sternly complain (no rudeness) about your replacement. Maybe you can weasel something out of them, like a free warranty extension or an SSD (it's worth a try) ;)

I don't have Onsite repair and my 1530 is out warranty. I still have until July 2010 for my GPU (extended due to heat) warranty. They send me the box so I'll send mine without the HDD.

    Hopefully they'll fix it.

Can't help but wonder if there were any 1530's that didn't have the heating issue. They (1530's) were such nice looking laptops with good size to weight ratio's and I was considering picking up a second hand one, albeit not without a warranty. This might be a bit off topic but does anyone know if the heating problem was across the board (all graphics cards) with the 1530?

Cin or anyone with their new/replacement care to share what the dimensions are on the 1640? I'm thinking it might be similar to my 9300 as far as size goes, hope I'm wrong. :)

Can one of you go through the process you went through to get the new system? How many times did you contact them for gpu failure? I have had the same issues with my 1530 and I have just been too lazy to keep calling them to get it fixed. The first time they replaced it this summer, it was overheating to the point of bsoding. Now it is idling really high again, though I havent been gaming. How many times did you have them replace the mobo before they sent the new machine? I am really over the 1530... I wasnt pleased with it when I got it in may 08 and I flat out hate it now.

I got Dell to replace my 1530 due to a graphics failure recently. They said the replacement should take about 4 weeks. I'll post a log of my chat. I had 3 motherboard replacements on my first laptop. I then got them to replace it with another m1530 about a year ago. This time when my GPU died I got them to replace the system, although they wouldn't tell me anything more (like what model they were replacing it with). I'll edit the chat and post it here shortly.

I'm mad at myself, I think I typed the wrong number in the unresolved issues form, so I sent another one. Lol, I managed to waste another week.

Starting the ball rolling on getting mine replaced. I have been lazy because I didnt want to deal with their support, but if they are replacing the laptops altogether it will be worth it. I have basically been dissatisfied with this laptop since the day I got it. Maybe dell can work their way back into my good graces...

eh, theyre sending another motherboard and various chasis parts. When those start to die again in a month I will continue my ranting.

The REALLY annoying thing about this laptop is, if I dont get them to replace it; when my warranty expires its done for shortly after.

I do believe unless there have been multiple documented repair requests they may not be replacing them, i know i went through 3 motherboards, and not sure on how many cin went thru but it was multiple boards as well. if you under the nvidia extended warranty they will not replace the laptop simple enough, if you under the dell warranty though and there has been multiple repairs it has been documented that this is really really simple, get on dell chat, and just calmly and professionaly explain the history behind your laptop, what dell has done, and that this laptop has caused you hardship with downtime and this cannot continute and that you would like a total system replacement **DO NOT SAY I WANT A SXPS 1640** just say you would like a system replacement, they are no longer sending out 1530's as system replacements and you will recieve a 1640.

Wait brew, you got a 1640? not a 1645? Yea and Loudog, the instructions detailed by brew is the way to do it. Just that in place of saying "you would like a system replacement" you could also say "I don't want this laptop (m1530) anymore". M1530s are like very short ticking time-bombs waiting to explode (not literally) with heat. The dell technician just resets that short timer every time he comes in by changing the motherboard/heatsink/graphics card. I had 3 of those "resets" as well before I got replaced. I think "3" is the magic number ;) (under warranty as well) .

hey guys. i just got a call from the 'manager' with whom i spoke with concerning my replacement last week, and he said that he'll see if he could get me a 1645 or a 1647 instead of the 1640, since that has taken so long. i haven't been reading up the situation with heating and throttling on those systems. can someone give me a quick summary of what's going on with that? also, which do you recommend?

Now that I used the correct number, I got an email back. I'll be getting something in "three to four" weeks.

On a completely seperate note; the 8600m gt overclocks very nicely. The funniest part is the temperatures are hardly effected. I went from 475/950/702 to 700/1400/920. 3dmark06 1280*800 scores went from 4700 to 6100.

does it mean that if I only have the NVIDIA extended warranty, they will not replace my 1530 with multiple mobo replacement due to NVIDIA problem?

its awesome to see that the same people that bought a m1530 by the time i bought mine (dec. 2007), are getting replacements!!

well, about a month ago my replacement got cancelled; i'm still in process :)
    I'm getting a 1640, 500gb 7.2k rpm, blueray, ati 4670, p8700, 4gb ram, rgbled :)...
    not bad at all...
when i read the specs, my mind = blown
my trust in dell = regained.

*EDIT: IT WAS DECEMBER 2007 :\
