Glad you like the guide, thanks!

There is a big difference between the Samsung screen I was given versus the LG I replaced it with.

LG = very bright, clear sharp colours, white whites, better overall appearance
Samsung = dull, grainy appearance, whites are a mottled yellowish colour, poor colours/contrast overall.

I took my 1530 to Best Buy and compared the screen to the laptops there, every singe laptop had a better looking screen, even the cheapest ones. There is no comparison the Samsung screen was terrible.

I am sure your LED screens are fine. Cheers.

Sweet! Let us know how it goes.

    Hi Guys,

I'm writing this on my new LG LCD :]

I ordered my LG Panel from the US on 28/12/08, it arrived 5/1/08, so pretty chuffed with the speedy delivery and not getting raped by customs charges. It cost me £140 straight from EBay, which was pretty sweeet.

The exact part number for the LG Panel is LP154WE2-TLB2 (sometimes written as LP154WE2-(TL)(B2)) - I believe this corresponds to the Dell part DW306 which is pretty much impossible to purchase in the UK. It was also shipped with the inverter, so no worries regarding getting the correct one.

The photo guide in combination with the service manual was absolutely priceless - I wouldn't have dared attempt this without such an in depth, picture based guide, even though I've had quite a lot of experience with taking apart computers and laptops.

Just a couple of points I wanted to add that might help people complete this task -

    1. The control panel is tough to pull off - I thought it was gong to snap, but if you use a knife and start in a corner, it does come off eventually. This was by far the hardest part!

    2. If you forget which WLAN wires go where, don't panic! On the label on the wireless card, there is a black, grey and white triangle next to each contact indicating which coloured wire goes where. However, if you're careful, you don't actually need to remove them at all. I started pulling all the wire routing out from under the keyboard, but couldn't be bothered to do it all, so just carefully removed the LCD panel whilst the laptop was still in one piece.

    3. The LG panel is awesome.

Is it the same one like yours? If it is, I am going to make an order, only one think bother me - the replacement..I am not sure that I am cappable to do that myself. I am looking forward for your answer! Thank you very much in advance!!!

Glad to hear I was able to help. Thanks for the added pointers! Just a note... I wouldn't use a knife to pry off the control panel. If you do PLEASE be careful. I used the flat end of a wooden chopstick. I have seen Dell techs use a little plastic pry bar that Dell gives them to do this. Something else that might work is a disposable knife made of plastic or bamboo.

    Cheers :)

Sorry your link is no longer valid as the item was sold. The WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen part number is as above.

    LP154WE2-TLB2 WE2
    L.G. Phillips

A quick search on eBay may help you locate one easily. Since I am in Canada I am not sure if I can help much more than this guide already does. Can you find the M1530 service manual in your language? I think that would be a big help to you.

Dude, be care full with that seller!!!!.. Before I buy mine I ask him if that LCD was genuine LG... and he told me that he can give me a good price because he sell compatible screens but if I want an Exact PN (Part Number) I need to pay 85$ extra.
Before you buy better ask for the LG number (LP154WE2-TLB2 in your case), and then, when you search on ebay all the seller who actually are selling the LG Screen in the top of the title they write EXACT PN

    LIKE THIS SELLER: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...m=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=390012089903%09&_fvi=1

So before you buy, better make sure is the LG Part Number what are you buying and is not to important if is the Dell PN.

I thinking in buy one today for me... but 200 USS litle expensive ... :( But well, after replacing, I'm gonna put the WUXGA on Ebay.

I have a Studio 15 with a beautiful WXGA+ LED screen. My 1530 has the crappy Samsung SEC 3157 WXGA+. Do any of you know if i can swap the screens and whether they would be compatible. I'm worried about the ribbon cables not being compatible and me finding out after i open both of the laptops which i'm a little bit hesitant doing anyway. Also the studio 15 has 15 or 16 brightness levels compared to the 1530's 7 brightness levels. Would appreciate any input.

    Hey,

I know its a pain, but I think the only way to find out whether or not the screens are compatible is to take apart the Studio and read the model number off the back..

That's one way... or you could take them both apart and just try. Really it shouldn't take that long to get to the screens and housing to see if they can swap.

Not much..very sadly..I am Bulgarian, that's why ..actually I understand 85 percent of this you've wrote in this guide- it's excellent guide actually, but these 15 percent make me feel not sure that I m capable of do that myself...so I could try to start, but I thing I'll lose myself somewhere during the replacement...I still think also about the famous phrase- No Pain, No Game... :)))

Thund3ball can I use your guide like a selling tool for my item description? Please!

A bit of an off topic question:

I was waiting for the studio xps to be released, and after seeing the review, I am not that impressed. After seeing the studio xps, I will most likely be ordering a refurbished m1530 this week and am wondering if anyone has a suggestion of how to avoid getting a samsung screen? (I had a samsung sec 3358 on my old inspiron 1520 and was very disappointed). Is it possible to call a dell rep and ask them about specific refurbished models to determine what part the screen is...or will the reps not have this amount of detail?

    Hope someone can help!

I had initially asked a question about replacing a Samsung screen on the 1530 with a Studio 15's LED screen but have since sold the Studio 15 and will be selling the Xps m1530 too as i was able to snag a refurb 1530 with LED from the outlet. The only way of making sure you don't get stuck with a bad screen to find one with LED. It take some patience though as they tend to go fast.

Yeah, I would go for the LED screen, but i think the 1440 resolution will be too small for me. I think this because I previously had 1680 resolution on a 17 inch laptop and didn't care for it. I figure that would be about the same as 1440 on a 15 inch laptop.

Feel free to link to my guide for whatever you want but don't count on me being a salesperson of any kind. I won't answer any sales questions. :p

    Cheers

The age old question. If you are ordering WSXGA+ (1680x1050) there really is no way (sadly) to ensure what screen you will receive unless you buy from a private seller as opposed to Dell. Good luck.

    I would replace my wxga screen (CPT Chunghwa CPT141F - Dell P/N: TM121)for a wsxga+ (LG Philips LPLF300 - Dell P/N: XK309).

    so I ordered one.
last week the screen arrived but when I installed it,
I can see the dell logo and eventualy I arrive in windows vista
but the color ar very strang they jump from green-ish to red-ish to blue-ish
colors. now I've heard that the problem could be in the display cable.
now i've searched on the internet but I couldn't found anything about replacing the cable.

    plz help me

try with your previous screen and if everything is OK, that's mean it's bad screen, it's not the cable fault.

I alreay build in my previous screen and that works perfectly.
I really liked to have a higher res screen and the seller told me that
this looks like the video cable problem.

so U can asure me that it's not a cable problem but a bad screen.

I've heard some DELL laptops use different LCD cables for WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA screens, but considerable of mine- it worked with these three types without any problems, so in your case is very hard to say, but I think it is a faulty screen (keep in mind the sellers allays go out from the uncomfortable situations dry...I have had some experience). The best way is to try this high res screen on some friend's same model XPS...or you can try change your LCD cable, just in case to be sure and isolate this like a potential problem which is...hard to do and taking time.

I am confused about one thing in the guide. If I follow Chucko's method why do I need to do steps 1-6 ? I am sure there is a good reason I am just curious . I am confident I can do this via either method but would like to save some time . I have about thirty plus repaired red ring of death xbox's to my credit.

Dude, to be honest.. I followed the Thund3rball guide only once... when I replaced my LID (from Black to Red).

But for replace the LCD, you only need to:

    1 Take the battery out
2 Open al the way the laptop
    3 (Carfully) Remove the bezel
4 Replace the LCD (very easy, only 6 screws)

    thats it!

Still his guide is very usefull . you should give him some Rep :p

    Also...

Soo X360 RROD.... is it hard to fix that???.. do you have any link to share whit a XPS brother?? :D :D :D

Absolutely. If not for him I would have sent it out to get repaired . The wife had called for a quote. I could not replace the full system capability of my configuration but I could buy two new net books for what was quoted LOL !

Xbox 360 fix is like three hours the first time you do it and 45 minutes the fifth time and on. I use these guys. http://www.thecoupondepot2006.com/xbox360 This method requires zero drilling of the metal chasis. Get the xbox case tool (comes with torx drivers) and the hardware kit with thermal paste. I now get the hardware at Lowes and ordered a tube of the paste online.

Perhaps this was already answered since I skipped a few pages. People had been asking about the warranty being voided by fixing your own screen, I believe that as long as you follow the service manual you should be good to go. This is not known to me to be a fact so don't quote me I have just heard this elsewhere.

That is true, the warranty is voided when your replace your LCD screen..

but.. the other true is...... HOW DELL WILL KNOW THAT?? two times come a technician to my home and fix my laptop, and he didn't even know that the laptop have a different color...

Also.. the "Dell" technician get paid after he made the job.. so maybe he don't actually care if you opened your laptop before..

    you are welcome TB

Hello, I'm new here, but used this great and helpful guide for my Dell XPS 1530 out of warranty.

I had a big crack on one of the hinges and needed to replace the back cover of the screen. I ordered the part to save some money. Thanks for the guide on how to replace it, couldn't have done it with the official manual alone. Cheers! But I'm not completely finished.. after replacing the back cover of the screen the magnet that holds the screen down when closing it fell off. And I didn't notice where it fell from. Obviously it was around the web cam area.

My question is; where does this magnet need to be placed? It has clue on one side. would like the correct position so it wont interfere with any of the electronics (the magnet is quite strong) and so it will close the laptop properly as intended.

    Hope someone could help!
Again, thanks for the guide ;)

    Cheers
    Deus

Edit: Just tried the XPS service support - they had no clue :(

Sorry I have missed your posts. I am glad to see my guide is still coming in handy. :D

    Cheers mates!

    *************

    @ Deusido

I have no idea where the magnet attaches too. I did not even see it when I took my XPS apart. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Maybe make a new thread about it. There may very well likely be someone out there who knows. Perhaps one of the guys who took their XPS completely apart to paint it?

Thanks Thund3rball, Was just about to make a new thread about it, but then I called the Danish XPS Support and they knew where it needs to be put.

If anyone wishes to know, you have to look on the backside of the display bezel - where you find a little plastic 'pocket' for it to sit in - quite simple ;)

Again, thanks for the great guide ;)

    Hi,

Not sure whether this is the right thread to post my question, but here goes:

I currently have an XPS m1530 with the WXGA glossy screen (1280x800) and was looking to replace it with the WUXGA screen (nothing wrong with the current screen; just need more resolution.)

    Questions:

    1. Can I just do a simple swap? In other words, do I have to worry about details like video card etc.?
    2. What are the questions that I need to ask before buying one? (e.g. Manufacturer, warranty etc.?)
    3. Glossy vs non-glossy - please let me know your opinions
    4. Would the ones sold on eBay (links below) work fine?

bend away the "plate" who sits above the keyboard, obs, start from the right, use a little screwdriver. loose the screen-cable
    [IMG]
remove then all 4 screws on the hinges. take the screen off

after you been taking the screen off, remove all 8 screws around the frame, then EASY start to bend around the frame (start on the button off the frame), i used a plastic-tool (like a small flat plastic screwdriver). after you been taking the frame off, its 4 screws on both side off the screen that you have to remove.
NOW everything is done. just put the new screen on. obs, dont forgett to spin back the earth-cabel.

    Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Thund3rball for the great tutorial on replacing the 1530 screen. Everything went without a hitch, which is a miracle, as I am a complete neophyte.
But here's my challenge. My original screen went blank but I could detect the backlight. Took it to repair store where they informed me that it would cost about $600 to replace. Cogitated on that for a while and decided to do it myself. Received an OEM screen yesterday and spent today replacing the old one. Time came to view my handiwork. Same result - dark screen with backlight visible. When hooked up to a desktop monitor everything works (except the new screen). Now desparate and demoralized!
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

I think that I may have found the problem. Apparently the nVidia GeForce 8400M GS GPU overheats very easily and Dell has had many compaints about this in the blogs. They try to remedy it on a temp basis by altering the BIOS.

    Am I perhaps right?

Folks - Where on earth are you all buying your LG screens?

Every seller in ebay I have contacted has said it is NOT an LG. Even this joker selling an LG LP154WE2-TLB2 tells me it's actually not an LG! - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200389083431

I would even settle for a 1440x900 screen butjust cannot find an LG brand one. Very frustrating - any ideas??

    Thanks.

Well it's possible they are out of circulation now? I actually got mine straight from the Dell parts store. But that was well over a year ago.

When replacing the LCD screen for the m1530 do you also have to replace the inverter too? I just replaced the Samsung screen with the LG and while the laptop starts up the screen is blank. I was thinking either the new screen is broken or I need to replace the inverter too.
