I'm getting my LG screen installed today. Called the technician and he verified it as XK309.

My effort on this are as follows:

1 chat rep 3x to no effect got tired of it.
    2. Send e-mails on both customer service and tech support.

Having about 6 cases with the same body of text they escalated my case.

If you ask me I don't recommend a unit sent back just for the screen. You'll never know what other problems the next unit will have. Plus depending on how fast your bank process canceled balances it might takes days for it to clear. I bonded with mine but she doesn't like how she looks on a glassy surface :)

Yeah, that's true. On my new system the volume up touch button doesn't work. but the touchpad doesn't malfunction as much after closing and reopening the lid. I haven't tried the headphone jacks yet. It's a lottery to find out what defect you get. On the other had, you don't want to wait until your 21 day is up to get that screen replaced.

got the outlet system today. its going back. the IE screens look horrible with the samsung screen.

they forgot an AC adapter which was to be part of my order, along with the xps case.

shame on you dell, i might not buy again. Im gonna keep the laptop for a week anyways just to play a little with it.

I finally got the screen and it's way better than the samsung. LG fit for a powerful and sleek machine. No grain, no bad angles, much brighter, zero light leakage on mine.

My fight is over and good luck to all those requesting it. If chat doesn't work try to e-mail them that's how I did it. :)

i dunno who you guys were talking about that said the part number doesn't exist. i'd ask the dell guy to transfer you to someone who does know. often times i think these guys get lazy. the representative i was talking to said there's no way he can guarantee i get the screen of my choice if i get a replacement m1530, but he can order specific part numbers. i agree that you shouldn't settle for a samsung screen - I DIDN'T. but reordering a laptop over and over again is like gambling. also when you order specifically a screen replacement, it sends a message to dell that you will not put up with the samsung screen. just get a m1530, and if it has a samsung screen, and it probably will, call up the rep and tell them the LG part number exists and that you want that part number or they should transfer you to either their supervisor or someone who can order that part number.

that part number CAN be ordered. any rep that tells you otherwise is blowing smoke up your ass and/or is incompetent and ignorant. in either case, get someone who will get the job done. i must have gotten lucky and got a rep that ordered the part for me within 20-30mins and 2 days later a tech installed it into my laptop.

Well, I receive my M1530 on Friday, so, hopefully I won't have to go through the normal hoops to get LG screen if mine comes with a Samsung and I'm unhappy with it. I'm a Dell employee myself, so, I know for a fact that the part number exists. But, we'll cross that road when I get to it.

Even we as non-employees can look at our order (if it's coming on Friday as you state above I assume it has shipped), you should be able to lookup your service ID, and see the parts list on your machine and know if it's the Samsung or LG, no? I for one am curious to know if anyone is actually getting an LG from the factory!

Oh, I did that before it had shipped. It shows as being a samsung, but I also know that sometimes that doesn't guarantee that it will be a Samsung and it may be the LG or the other chinese brand, so, I'll wait and see when I actually get the machine what my eyes tell me and what the Hardware ID says. Even though I'm an employee I still have to go about getting these things taken care of as an actual dell customer as technically I am one. :)

Received an 1530 with the WSXGA+ screen. Invoice stated the samsung so I knew I would probably be getting the bad screen and indeed got it. Wasn't sure what all this grainy mess was all about, but after having an 9400 and 2 2407 at home, it's definitely noticeable.

The odd thing is that Dell send me the wrong laptop. I ordered a cheap 1.5 without biometrics and Dell sent a 1.67 with bio!!

A little off topic but my second m1530 seems a lot louder than my first m1530. Anyone else have an issue with the level of noise being produced.

I do gold tech support for SMB, so I know exactly what happens when you call in a parts replacement, and know very well that the frontline techs, even if they put in the part numbers you request have no control over wether that goes out. If the dispatch people don't have that part in stock at that exact moment, get ready to get a subbed part. Nothing you or I can really do about it.

Very quiet. Just the very slight sound from the fan. Hey, did any of you receive TWO remote controls with your machine? I got two of em with mine. I really never even noticed it because I put the first remote in the slot and must have pushed the other aside with the other crap. Just curious.

Well, I had the tech document the record that the part was not to be replaced with anything else, even if not in stock and I had to wait...no substitutions would be accepted. Don't know if anyone actually looked at it and might have replaced it if they had not seen that remark or not, but the XK309 was what the rep entered and appeared on the service order...it never changed and that's what was sent.

What irritates me more than anything is hearing the stories of people getting Blown off. I guess I've got a slight advantage in I know how it works, but still. Employee or customer, you should never be treated like that. IE, what sonic went through with people yelling at him. I'd be emailing managers so fast its not even funny.

on my first attempt LG was ordered then that night the order was cancelled and a new order with a Samsung was entered. when I called up and asked what the reason was the tech said there was a note that said "the customer cannot select the part number." someone intentionally canceled the order. all the while other people were getting LGs sent out by request. It's really random. and it's crap.

they say that, but I haven't actually heard of that being successful. I don't think customer support has the right access to actually order parts and service, perhaps.

Actually customer service and tech support pull the parts from the same place, so, your getting the same replacement either way. Tech support has to do it to send a tech out though, I don't believe customer care can do that. They can return and exchange systems, though!

what are my chances of them sending me a LG screen, and letting me do it myself?

i love the laptop, but the screen is nasty.

if they wont fix the issue, apple gets my money again. Their CS has been the best in the past for me.

Well my 1530 arrived today with the crappy Samsung screen, so I phoned and the rep was very friendly and put the service request in with specific instructions to only send out the LG screen. Tech is supposed to phone by Friday, i've got my fingers crossed...

Well, you can request that, and if you can convince them that you can do it yourself they -might- send it out. Not sure what the exact policy is on that for XPS support, but be warned, that LG screen will come with a you break it you buy it policy if they send just the screen itself to you with no technician.

im just going to return the 1530.

I dont think I can use vista full time.

Theyve messed my outlet order up so much, that I just want to return and be done with it :(

    Things that are wrong:

got a terrible display (knew that was coming after paying)
    am missing an AC adapter
my warranty is supposedly expired, according to my account
i cannot use any form of web support because of it "being out of warranty"
the trackpad is terrible, it jumps all over the place, sometimes freezing.

its a shame, its a nice machine, but its gonna go back. I have a feeling im not the first, or second to send this machine back

Don't know what this is. There should be a part #, XK309 or RW985, (these are for the WSXGA+), etc. The above looks like a standard, non-specific WXGA+ item.

Well, the tech just finished installing my LG screen, and all I can say is I'm not impressed.

    Kidding

It's amazing how much better this monitor is. No grain, far better back lighting...it may be a little more glare prone than the samsung, but it's so worth it. And it only took 2 weeks of dell tech support hell to get it.

Apple better have good CS; they're ripping you off in every other single way possible with their over-priced merchandise. The least they could do after totally abusing your wallet is give you a nice person to listen to your complaints.

Just ordered my M1530 yesterday and right now I’m looking at the same part number, 320-6078. Are you saying that it is indeed an LG or are you talking about something completely diff.

Oh answered my own question. After chatting with dell, they basically told me that I have to wait until I receive mine. Hope I get an LG or at least a good Samsung.

Ok, so I got my 1530 about 15 minutes ago and unfortunately I've gotten a Samsung screen. I'm really tempted to just get it exchanged, but does anyone know how long it takes on average? I'm not sure I can wait another week for this...

In general though, is it worth the effort? I mean, is there a really big difference between LG and Samsung screens?

I for one can say that I have received an awesome screen so wait and look at it first before you get riled as I knew that I was getting one as well and now I'm glad and wouldn't think about going thru the whole swap thing...so give it a chance and you may be surprised..seems that they may have gotten a new batch of the samsungs...and there are others that have had great screens ..so keep an open mind and don't get caught up in the LG thing...you like it keep it or you have the choice ...cheers lemme know how it goes...

You have to register your system w/ dell and then look at the individual part list.
    XP059=LPLDF00=LG

320-6078=generic screen code (could be any kind). I was able to check my system before I received it, after it was built using my service tag and order #.

I can't believe you can post on this thread and ask that question. If you read through it you will see that every single person that has had both has stated that there is a huge difference between the screens. You pay the same price for a system with a Samsung as you do for one with an LG. Everyone who got a Samsung got ripped off, whether they know it or not.

Ok, well that definitely answers my question :D

But how do I go about doing it? I mean, do I just call them and tell them "I don't like the grainy screen, could you replace it with a LG Philips LPLF300 screen?"

And does anyone have an answer for how long it'd normally take? I live in Australia btw.

Oh, and BTW, will they take it if I've re-formated it?

ya know, im gonna see what dell can do...

i am too tired from all the work i've had lately to worry about this but...i've had my original m1530's lcd replaced, now im going ot have it done on my replacement. i may even have dell replace it again after that.

my screens were not only grainy, but i had other issues not related to that. and on my replacement, it seems like a solid build but this screen is the worst one of them all!!! not only grainy, but dead pixels, light leakage, and the whole right side is "lighter" at the slightest viewing angle.

How about everyone who get's a Samsung screen actually take the time to look at it and give it a proper evaluation rather than jumping on the bandwagon and complaining for potentially no reason at all. Who do you think is going to pay for all these returns and screen replacements in the long run!

well put neil...no kidding..I hate to burst the bubble but LG is just another screen and saying that it is the be all and end all is maybe fair comparing to a poor screen but not to a properly manufatured screen ...sorry..so saying all samsung orders were cheated is over the top as I have had many eyes look at my screen and they are very impressed and they have lappies of their own...so this is getting to be an LG love fest lol!!! oh yeah LG doesn't ever have screen issues LOL!!!!ok.... to each his own I guess...all that matters is if you are happy not that you get the "LG" I will not go thru the hoops just to get one as it it crazy just for the brand name..if your screen is fine why chnage it just for the sake of changing brands??? cheers...just my .02 ..off the soap box for now again...

This would be more convincing if you had actually seen both screens. But if you had, you wouldn't be saying this at all. I'd say take your own advice and just enjoy your screen. This thread is for people who have a problem with their screen and want help getting it fixed.

I do think there is a sort of mass hysteria about the samsung/lg screens. People need to take a look at their screen and decide if they like it or not instead of thinking "omg I got a Samsung how do I replace it?".

I have seen both screens and the Samsungs are some of the poorest screens I've ever seen. Still, some people have said they like their Samsungs. It's very subjective. Go to any tv shop and try to figure out which tv display is the best. I bet if you go there the next day you'd choose a different one.

Though, in this case I got to say Dell messed up. People who are returning screens are not driving up the prices and should not be blamed. Dell's poor business practices are.

My xps also had the awful samsung screen that all of you speak of. I tried to live with it and just suck it up, but when my girl friend-- who knows nothing about computers-- asked me why my screen was so ugly I couldn't take it anymore. I made three attempts to get a replacement LG screen and was unsuccessful. (did get a $125 coupon though) Well, I got this xps 1530 as a replacement for my inspiron 1520 which I'm gladly sending back today. I've witnessed the major difference between the samsung and the LG first hand. My inspiron HAD a beautiful LG screen and my xps HAD a crappy Samsung. Now I say had because I just swapped the screens. =) It was actually very easy to do. The only real difference between the 1520 and 1530 was the brackets on the side of the screen.

Here are the two manuals on the dell site:
    XPS 1530 http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsm1530/en/SM/display.htm#wp1179909
    Inspiron 1520 http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1520/en/sm/display.htm

There you go folks, another happy LG switcher.

If you have a good Samsung to LG story, please write and tell us about it. We may select your story for a commercial.

I'd also like to suggest, next time you order a Dell, order 10 of whatever you want. Then take all the best parts from the set and make one good computer and return the rest for a full refund.

omg, im almost tempted to buy a 1520 to do that, lol. but i'll let dell do the work and keep sending me replacements, over and over again till they get it right.

after spending $2,000+, i really dont feel bad about being picky! HA!

Where can I find my service tag. All i've been able to gather is my Customer and Purchase Id. Does this meen that I have to wait for the system to be in it's shipping stage to find out?

Well, here's another experience on the Samsung screen issue I thought I'd contribute.

When I received my 1530, I didn't have a severe grain issue. I "sorta" noticed a very slight "smudginess" issue that was more than offset by a lack of uniform brightness on the screen. After putzing with it for a week, I kept catching myself tilting the screen in/out to "chase" a shadow at either the top or bottom of the screen. I never could get it to go away - unless I squared it up such that my eyes were in the exact middle of the screen.

I thought I was being too picky until I looked at my wife's laptop, a closeout Inspiron 1501 she's delighted with, and I realized her screen looks *great* by comparison. It's clear, uniform colors, and best of all, uniform brightness.. I compared it with my nearly four-year-old Inspiron 9100; same thing - uniform colors and uniform brightness.

So I contact Dell and ask them to swap out the display. They agreed, but the contact advised me he was prohibited from requesting the LG screen as I was able to determine that I had the Samsung screen. Reluctantly, I agreed, and the tech showed up a couple of days later. He efficiently replaced the screen (although he had some troubles clipping the bezel back together). Started it up....almost the same thing. Low light levels, almost dark in some areas, but in all honesty it was fractionally better than its predecessor. The problem, though, was that the increase in brightness also exacerbated the "smudginess" issue. It was better, but not by much.

Still, though, it wasn't as good as the laptop I'd paid less than 1/3 as much for, and when the tech contact followed up, he reminded me that I was still within my customer satisfaction period, and if I wanted, consider contacting a CSR and requesting an entirely fresh-built computer rather than having him order a new screen, and risk getting the same Samsung non-starter yet again and tearing the machine down to replace it. That made sense to me.

So, I contacted Dell again today, and they were *extremely* nice about the situation, apologized that I wasn't completely satisfied with my purchase, confirmed I was in my "customer satisfaction window," and said they would build me a new system. She had an order number for me before I even realized she was setting up the order.

I asked her to specify a non-Samsung screen in the replacement, and she did. Whether that actually translates to an LG screen remains to be seen. She said it would be expedited and I could return my existing machine in a box they would provide when the new one shipped.

All in all, while I have no guarantees the new unit will have an LG screen, my impression is that there is a good chance it won't be Samsung, and hopefully it will be here sometime next week. I think Dell has been very responsive, and the only thing they haven't/wouldn't do is allowed me to specify the replacement LCD on the original service call in the first place. Might have saved them a hassle, but for now, I'm getting a brand new machine, and hopefully a better screen with it. That's cool with me. I'm not sure I could ask Dell to do much more at this point.

I will advise on receipt of the new system how the screen looks.

    -Sd

Just a tip on getting an LG screen. Keep trying with different people, if you start talking to them and it sounds like they're giving you automated responses, immediately hang up and try someone else. Also what worked for me was call CUSTOMER CARE, ask for a supervisor right away, not tech support.

I am in Canada. Got my XPS end of Jan. Like the notebook a lot, but I have the Samsung screen. I must admit that I think the screen is not that bad in the sense that it looks like a lot of other laptop screens I've seen in the stores. However, it is dim and has poor viewing angles and I can appreciate the "grainy" thing - but I think it's like a lot of other screens I've seen.

I've called Dell a few times to try to get the LG, but it's been a stonewall. Tried calling tech support, customer care, my small business sales rep... emailed dell... i think they've got my service tag so they have a record of how they have chosen to deal with me. They sent me an exchange unit, but the screen is the same.

Anyway, I decided to return it hoping to wait it out and see if the LG's come out later or just see if prices drop. But now they are offering me $250 back to my VISA. So now I'm stuck... Deal or no deal? LOL.

$250 to settle for the Samsung? The only thing keeping me from accepting is that everyone is RAVING about how much better the LG screen is. I think this forum has made me paranoid and it's not helpful that I'm a bit obsessive I suppose. :)

Is keeping the non-LG worth the deal? Would love to hear opinions.

BTW: when trying this tactic (i.e. threatening return for cash incentive) they went from $50 coupon for dell purchase in 90 days, to $100, to $200 (all coupons), and then said $250 credit return. Not sure if there is another tier to be offered. Anyone else in Canada try this and get a bigger amount for the return? If so, maybe I should hold out...

Also: anyone in Canada successful with getting the Samsung switched to LG, please message me on how you did it! I have 3 yr complete care but return to depot, NOT onsite next business day service.

thats exactly it. what is the right way of dealing with this issue? i think someone said it but it could be the wrong way of dealing with it:

I have been EXTREMELY nice and I think they are screwing me until my 21 days are up. i do have a plan, and thats one or two more replacement screens then i give them MY options....or i'll give my options to the supervisor.

boy i wish i could use this forum for something other than a ridiculous issue like this!!!
