I got my 1530 and its an LG it looks good but i noticed some backlight bleeding through.... but its very bright and viewing angles are good. Nothing more to say as im not that picky..... i can live with some backlight bleeding through. Mines the dw306 btw. Good Luck to everyone on their purchase. It is actually brighter than my desktop screen.

i had the sec3350 when my 1530 was delivered. i looked at it and could see the graininess straight away, but i didn't think it was too bad. then i noticed a dead pixel and thought, 'well, i don't like that'. rang up tech support and complained about the graininess/blurriness, tech guy on the phone was quite nice. he did say the different screen manufacturers was not the cause, but agreed to send a new screen anyway. i lucked out and got an lg first time - lplf300.

i'm glad for those who have samsungs and are happy with them...like i said, i didn't think it was that bad. having seen my lg replacement though...it really is heaps better. put it this way, if i'd got an lg to begin with and then had it replaced with a samsung i'd be pretty ticked off and would make them change it again.

the tech guys can be quite rough though - apparently they get paid per job here in oz, not per hour. so it's in their interests (if not yours) to get it done as quickly as possible. mine scratched up the black panel and the back of the screen...luckily (or unluckily) he bent the screen back too far when checking if it works ok and the little xps panel popped off - at the time he thought it was a fault with the back panel so ordered a replacement one. turns out it happens to all of them, the back of the screen will not clear the base of the laptop if you bend it back too far and it's basically tack-welded on.

new tech came out the second day, replaced the back of the screen and then ordered a new black panel for me, which i installed myself today. the black panel can get pretty messed up when getting taken in and out, the tech guy said it's a common problem - you have to be really careful taking it out and putting it back in, or the little tabs/clips can get broken off or bent.

only niggle now is i that have two very slight scratches on the screen, which to be honest i think were there from the factory - only visible under sunlight at exactly the right angle, and are invisible otherwise. so i'm being a bit anal :). won't bother trying to get that replaced because it's not a problem and in all likelihood a new screen will have the same issue.

Ok, I had no luck on the phone.

They are saying there's no way at all for them to send one part over another. I quoted that email and explained it all to them and they still said it just isn't possible and that others must have been mistaken.

Does anyone have the number of the tech person that helped them in Australia that I could call?

I checked Dell's website today to see if they posted my review on the 15.4" Vostro, but they didn't. But they posted 3 other reviews written on March 25, just when I wrote mine. Kind of strange, isn't it? Could it be the fact that I wrote (in addition to a lot of good things) about the grainy Samsungs? :)))

I will check their website from time to time. If they really don't post the review... it's pretty obvious to me why.

That's funny, all I get for my service call status is this:

Parts information pertaining to this Service Call

    Part Number Description Quantity

Y274C SERVICE KIT..., LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WSXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC...., TLF 1
Thank You for Choosing DELL 0

The guy should be here within the hour, we'll see what he shows up with...

The guy came, it was a samsung panel (although the numbers on the back were slightly different...)

Here's the really fishy part... The number for the part was Y274C, and when he did the follow up call, the technician said that Y274C was the only part for the LCD, and while he did see the XK309 as a part, he said it was not available.

I don't know if Dell is switching things up to try to hide the LG panels, but they were most certainly not willing to help.

The service guy said it was not the first time he's replaced the screen for the same reason, and none of them have been resolved.

    Time to 'escalate' this issue...

This is what I had on my original shipment and it was a Samsung. And I guess you did get the Samsung. It sucks, you have to call Dell again and make sure the service call status displays what mine displays.

I just got a call from my tech who said he opened up the new package he received and the screen IS an LG. He says they forgot to ship out some parts in the new one so he grabbed them from the old one he still had from yesterday. Sounds like a cool guy. He will be here in a few hours to replace the screen.

I'm a little pissed, but I've got work to do...

I already sent comparison pictures to my CSR but until now no answer from her. It is already one week.

I try to ask her again next week, if no still answer, it looks like I’ve to live with my grainy Samsung through out my M1530 life.

Well, on the bright side, no tech guys will mess up with my new laptop.

That's not fishy. As stated many many times before in this thread, Y274C is a generic dell code for a display kit. Could be Samsung or LG.

Hey and guess what? This explanation is the very first result that comes up if you pop Y274C in the search box! Uncanny, eh?

I checked my service tag and it said I got a Samsung. Upon examining the screen, I noticed no graininess, which seemed odd, so I checked the display properties, and under Hardware ID it said LPL010F.

    LPL010F is a LG, right?

But my service tag said Samsung?

I'm sorry to see that this is still going on.

I was one of those that got a bad Samsung screen. I opted to return the machine and get something else (I ended up with a Lenovo T61p).

During my time I promoted the bad screen issue on Ideastorm. We also posted on Dell's forums trying to get a response from Dell. There was some response but Dell's stance seemed to be that there is no issue or the issue is not big enough to do anything about.

I hope this issue stays alive and more people get to know about it. If Dell becomes synonymous with bad screens to the general public they might do something.

The M1530 arrived this afternoon. The service tag shows the RW985 for LCD.

The actual LCD in my unit is the LPL010F!!! :D As soon as I powered on I knew it was not the Samsung, angles were too good. Good thing I cancleed the order for the XK309 from Dell Parts yesterday.

Now I have the replacement to my Alienware! Only took 3 tries to get a good one.

And my LG LCD is in!! I can tell the difference just by going into the Dell setup screen. The tech also mentioned that it looked a lot better.

Not able to boot into Vista right now. Had messed the whole thing up while trying to install Mac OS, but right now Mac OS looks niice.

Well, looks like I have a long road ahead with Dell, as nobody wants to send me an XK309...

And Dell isn't getting the message. Don't think for a second that they're trying to 'make things right', because all the sh*t I've gone through shows quite the contrary.

Maybe I'll get lucky and actually have someone send me an XK309.

If you're still in your return window I would recommend asking customer service to send you another system. I just got my 3rd one today after returning and cancelling my 2 previous system. The service tag shows a Samsung yet it came with a LG...

You've got nothing to loose by trying this.

    Good luck!

Where are you located? Tech Support, Customer support, you most likely will have to deal with them all. Getting an LG out of them is not an easy process, quite possibly you will have to keep getting them to send you replacement screens or notebooks until you get one with a LG LCD.

    Good luck!

Hey guys... I ordered an M1530 and its Dell part no. is TM121..

I talked to Dell Tech support, 3 of them.. each of them are saying that this part no. means by Dell brand is LG... although from what i know its an CPT...

I then talked to the supervisor and he also is saying that the Part NO. changes and that my system display is an LG although the part no. TM121...

    Here check this out:

M.S Dhoni: "my part no. is TM121? any idea what brand that is?"
03/29/2008 09:01:48AM Agent (Ujjval_135154): "It is an LG LCD."
03/29/2008 09:01:57AM M.S Dhoni: "LG? Are you sure...?"
    03/29/2008 09:02:01AM Agent (Ujjval_135154): "Yes."

03/29/2008 09:12:25AM Agent (Ujjval_135154): "Do you think that would be a problem if you have the Chunghwa Picture Tube."
03/29/2008 09:12:47AM M.S Dhoni: "Uh nope, but i was told i would be getting the LG"
03/29/2008 09:13:14AM M.S Dhoni: "and you guys are saying its an LG but outside Dell, it seems its CPT"
03/29/2008 09:13:15AM Agent (Ujjval_135154): "It is an LG LCD."
03/29/2008 09:13:51AM Agent (Ujjval_135154): "LG uses their technology to build the LCDs."

03/29/2008 09:15:07AM Agent (Ujjval_135154): "I see that these questions have been answered by the previous technician also, if you are not convinced I can ask my supervisor to have a word with you."

    03/29/2008 09:21:37AM M.S Dhoni: "LG Philips LPLDF00 - Dell P/N: XP059 - Size: 15.4" - Experience: Not Grainy
Chunghwa Picture Tube (CPT) (Model Unknown) - Dell P/N: TM121 - Size 15.4" - Experience: Not Grainy, but lower contrast than LG Phillips"
03/29/2008 09:21:46AM M.S Dhoni: "This is the info i have pulled up from the internet"
    03/29/2008 09:21:52AM M.S Dhoni: "saying the TM121 is CPT"
03/29/2008 09:22:00AM M.S Dhoni: "however numerous reps in Dell"
03/29/2008 09:22:04AM M.S Dhoni: "say that the TM121 is LG"
03/29/2008 09:22:54AM M.S Dhoni: "Could i know for certain which one is right, the external sites or dell?"
03/29/2008 09:23:12AM M.S Dhoni: "I am hoping its a Dell but the part no. doesn't match up...."
    03/29/2008 09:23:16AM M.S Dhoni: "sorry LG*"
03/29/2008 09:23:36AM Agent (Sup_Shiva_148041): "This part # is an unique part# and hence you will not get the exact information when you try to search for the same online."
03/29/2008 09:24:04AM M.S Dhoni: "So sometimes it might relate to a CPT, sometimes to an LG?"
03/29/2008 09:24:53AM M.S Dhoni: "Could you personally check and tell me what brand my LCD is?"
03/29/2008 09:25:44AM Agent (Sup_Shiva_148041): "The system which was shipped to you has a LG Display. As I mentioned this is an internal part # and hence you will not get the correct information when you search for the same online."
03/29/2008 09:26:11AM M.S Dhoni: "So you are 200% sure it is an LG?"
03/29/2008 09:26:22AM M.S Dhoni: "irrelevant of what part no. i got..."
03/29/2008 09:26:44AM M.S Dhoni: "and does it state on my order no. or service tag etc. that my LCD is an LG brand...?"
03/29/2008 09:28:09AM Agent (Sup_Shiva_148041): "We make sure that all the LCD Screens are checked for any issues before we send the system to you. Hence you will receive a good system. You will not get the information about the LCD name anywhere on the system. However if you are not happy with the syst"
&nbsp em, you can return the same. We take at most care about the system before we ship it and I am sure there will be no damages or issues with the LCD once you receive it from us.
03/29/2008 09:28:54AM M.S Dhoni: "Yea but the problem is I cant return it because it doesn't have international warranty and it is being sent from the US to me..."
03/29/2008 09:29:11AM M.S Dhoni: "soo thats why i need to know whether it is an LG because those have the best screens..."
03/29/2008 09:29:30AM M.S Dhoni: "Well if you are certain it is an LG, then no problem..."
03/29/2008 09:30:00AM M.S Dhoni: "By the way we can find out the LCD name on the system... just go to display properties.. hardware ID"
03/29/2008 09:30:39AM Agent (Sup_Shiva_148041): "Generally these systems are shipped with the LG Screens. However as I mentioned earlier, we make sure that all the parts are tested for any issues before we send it to our customers and hence I am sure that you will not have any issue with this system."
03/29/2008 09:31:22AM M.S Dhoni: "Ok... soo just a concluding question... From the information you have on the system that is shipped to me... My Display is manufactured by LG..."
    03/29/2008 09:31:42AM M.S Dhoni: "Am I right?"
03/29/2008 09:33:19AM Agent (Sup_Shiva_148041): "It should be a LG LCD because we generally ship this system with LG LCD's only."
03/29/2008 09:33:46AM M.S Dhoni: "But are you certain it is an LG? The other reps are saying 100% it will be an LG..."
    03/29/2008 09:34:38AM Agent (Sup_Shiva_148041): "Yes."

THATS WHAT THE DELL TECH SUPPORT ARE SAYING...

THERE EVEN GIVING ME A 100% Assurance -____________-"

So I need your info, how many of you guys have the TM121 screen and is it CPT? Also are the CPT screens good? are they grainy? bad viewing angles? backlit bleed?

And also.. what the hell are the dell people telling me...

    LOL Siggy updated. Thanks Rhodan.

And in the middle of my excitement yesterday I forgot to add that the tech had come by with a new bottom chassis because my laptop was wobbly. Turns out that ALL the screws on the bottom were loose. He says he had to tighten them all up to a half a turn each, and that fixed the wobbliness of the laptop, no need to replace the whole chassis and take everything apart. He actually did a pretty good job on replacing the screen. Dell also sent me a new back panel, which I really didn't need.

I'm happy with the laptop now, some minor annoyances but that's all design related.

Great forum BTW. I'm recommending it to everyone. :)

I'm a newbie here and I have spent almost 3 hours going through almost all of the 139 pages here...!

Well, with too much information going into my head, I need a couple of clarifications from you guys...

I'm in FL and planning to place an order today. (I suppose today is the last day for the Spring deals). Are the infamous Samsung screens still being shipped? (My choice is a 1440 and I haven't found anyone reporting in the past week or so...)

In the unfortunate event of I ending up with a Samsung and going through the ordeal of getting a replacement, should I pay more for the replacement LG (literally I'm not doing an upgrade, right)?

If I plan to return it within the 21 day period, will I be charged a restocking fee or a shipping fee?

And at last, If I opt for a replacement, is there a guarantee that I would not end up with a refurbished one.

    Yes, they still ship it.

No, you shouldn't need to pay.

AFAIK, not if it's within the 21 days.

There have been people who complained about getting a 'used' laptop as a replacement, though this does not appear to happen most of the time.

Thanks FloydTheBarber...! After taking all this into consideration, I might end up buying a 1330 or a HP Pavilion 6700t.

It's a tough call. You may receive a good screen if you order a Dell, or be happy with a Samsung screen. No way of knowing that until it's too late..
It may be worth the risk, though, if you were planning on the 8600m GT, which isn't available on those laptops.

It MIGHT be.. But, I'm not prepared to take that kind of a risk after reading about all the frustrating experience that people have described here. Also, I did some extensive reading only to find out that 8600 GT is NOT a must have for me. For all my practical purposes, I can live with even a 8400M GS (128 MB) that ships with 1330 for that matter. So, when I go for a 256 MB 8400M GS with HP that is really an add on.

For now, I'm waiting for the next set of XPS coupons to be out on 4/1 before I can take a decision on which one to buy.

Well, as I expected, Dell didn't post my review on Vostro 1500 on their website. They even sent me the email bellow to let me know. I honestly can say I didn't write any lie in there.

I wouldn't expect for Dell to allow users to post negative reviews about the M1530's screen on their website. They're in it to sell computers, and so far, they haven't officially recognized the screen issue as a 'problem'. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to either.

Dell probably figures that the cost of making people with grainy screens happy is more than they would lose because of the issue, so they're probably not going to officially do anything about it.

They know that people are complaining, and they've taken moves to keep consumers from easily getting the issue fixed.

If I were Dell, I probably wouldn't want to replace a bunch of screens, because that would be very expensive. Of course, if I were Dell, I'd implement this thing called "Quality Control", and I'd make sure the stock of Samsung screens I'm putting in $2500 laptops isn't bad.

Time for more phone calls and chat sessions.

My CSR said Dell don’t have better or other brands than Samsung. Her Technical Support team said the screen is just design in such a way (or in other words purposely made be to grainy :( )

Well, already game over for me and I don’t have extra free time to hustle around and make more noises.

Don't give up. If you can't be on the phone and you have internet access, try the chat. I arranged my replacement using only the chat.

Every person I have spoken to has claimed that the LG panels are not available, because LG stopped manufacturing them.

I was also told that a team has recently been put together to look into the 'grainy screen' issue.

The first rep I talked to told me that the part had been discontinued, but still said that they could not guarantee which part would be sent to me.

As you can see, I was sent the exact same part number that everyone has been quoting, and it was even listed in my service call details on the dell website.

I would try again and call BS on the not available statement. Try the chat. At least there you can be very clear and it's not that stressful. You can also prepare your statements and copy and paste to drive your point across.

I've tried the chat at least 5 times, and I've called 3 times.

I'm sure I'm on their support 'blacklist'...

Return your system and order an new one if you're still within your 21 days. :)

I did this and my new M1530, which has better specs than the original, arrivd with a LG LCD.

If you don't mind my asking, what does the grainy screen look like?

I just placed an order for an M1530 after grappling with the decision for days and would hate to receive a lemon without knowing it. (I've ordered the highest resolution screen on mine)

I got my screen replaced with an LG and im still within my 21 days but i am thinking i might return it anyway just because i dunno if i want to keep a system that had to be repaired from day 1. Do i just call the customer care to do that or tech support?

Customer care is where you should call.

I know the feeling about having a new system that needed to be repaired out of the box. But you also have to look how likely you are to get a LG on your next order... :)
