I think the 1530 I got is great... granted I'm still trying to sort out the screen thing and it is my first laptop so I don't have any references really, but I'm pretty happy with the specs and everything. Just the screen thing is a bit frustrating.

Ok just turned on my 1530 and noticed some grain on this Samsung screen it's not a big deal to me I can live with and viewing angles are pretty good the only problem is washed out color. Is there a setting to make the color more vivid?

yea I love my m1530, its VERY fast. Im coming from a desktop with a AMD 64x2 4200+, and this T8300 killlllls it. The physical appearence is amazing and its the perfect size to carry around in a backpack.

anyways, i love this thing, and it will be amazing when i get an LG. If you want one, go for it, but assume that you'll get a samsung and have to spend 2-5 hours on the phone with dell if you want an LG.

    Good luck guys

Yes there are several settings that you can use to adjust the monitor as far as color saturation, brightness, contrast, gamma, etc. Do the following:

Go to Control Panel and open up the NVIDIA control panel and select Advanved Settings. Click on Display in the left column and you can change resolutions, adjust desktop colors, add other external monitors, etc.

My Samsung WSXGA+ is fairly bright, but the silvery gradient takes some getting used to after working on a matte LCD for 5 years. Still might see if I can get an LG screen.

Yeah, ok, I love the smell of BS in the morning. Support can't have it both ways: either they can control what display goes in or they can not. If they can, they should be able to order you an LG. If they can not, then they can't know in advance what screen ends up in your replacement. Basically, I think she's full of it. I doubt they'll be sending you a Samsung specifically. You might get it or you might not but it'll have nothing to do with what's in your machine currently.

Sorry, can't offer help on the 21 day issue.

The color is terrible OMG just sat it side by side with my 19" monitor. I called xps tech and he said he doesn't have authority to place a different part # than the one in my system. He told me to call customer care not sure if the guy is just giving me a run around. He said customer care has authority to put in different part #.

EDIT: Seriously people I thought some of the people are over exaggerating about the screen, but you have to see it with your own eyes. It's BAD sorry for doubting you guys.

I spoke to Dell again...bunch of idiots.

They told me to get the new Samsung LCD installed because "it may be better than the one I currently have" (yeah, right...), then if its still grainy, to call back and they will see what can be done about it.

They said I'm getting an RW985 again because they simply have no stock of XK309's, or anything else. I was also told I may just have to wait until the LG panels come back into stock if thats what I want.

God after hearing these stories I'm so tempted to order alienware M15x and get it over with, but after reading alienware section they have their own issue as well! lol Man I love M1530 why dell gotta make it so hard for us, all we want is just a quality screen for our laptop that we paid for!?

I decided to read up on a few different notebooks to see if anyone else was experiencing problems with grainy LCD's...it's definitely not isolated to Dell!!

I feel sorry for those who paid big bucks for a top of the line Thinkpad T60, only to find it has a grainy screen!!

Even the M1330 with WLED isn't immune to it, some say their screens are crap, others say they aren't. Argh!

Grainy I don't mind, but washed out color I can't live with...especially when it's this bad look at this image below posted by Lith07 I can confirm that this is 100% accurate. Mine is just as bad sitting it next to my 19" viewsonic or is this how notebook supposed to look like compare to regular LCD monitor?

    Yeah thats not cool.

I'm going to try my luck with this replacement RW985 screen (Samsung SEC3350). Who knows, it might be a good one that has better colour and less grain, or it might be an XK309 in the wrong packaging (which has happened before from what I've read!!).

    We'll see tomorrow :)

Have you tried to play with Digital Vibrance at NVIDIA Control Panel. It will make huge difference.

FIXED! Just had to tweak the Nvidia control a little bit with contrast, gamma, and brightness didn't even touch digital vibrance, I LOVE you Unlogic you save me the trouble calling dell! Happy Samsung owner here. Guys the washed out color is in the settings not the screen go to Nvidia control you can make it so vivid it'll hurt your eyes lol.

Still messing with the settings to get it as close as my monitor as I can. I tried using the same settings as my monitor and it's way off, my M1530 seems to need more contrast and lower brightness, I lower the gamma as well. We should have M1530 calibration thread like most HDTV they need to be calibrated(probably because our samsucks screen are not that good out of the box lol).

the best i can get is 50% bright/contrats/gamma, no sharpening, and 80% vibrance. The color looks alot better, but the screen is still dim, and theres still grain, especially on white screens.

But deffinitly an improvement, good find!

how odd because mine is so bright I actually have to lower the brightness for me to be able to read comfortably. When just browsing my brighness is set at 5/7 when gaming is at full brightness of 7/7. I really hope theres a fix to this grain issue just by playing with the nvidia settings.

ok on the bright side my screen is as bright as the new apple mbp.

    I'm using

45% brightness on Nvidia and hold function key + up key to max.
    10% vibrant
    80% contrast
image sharpening none(I don't know why this is grey'd out I have this option with my desktop)
    Gamma 10%

I haven't installed any games so I can't tell how it will turn out, this is based off desktop background the one with yellow field and some green grass with blu sky. I will do some more tweaking tomorrow my eyes are watering now from looking at the screen lol. This is definitely and improvement though.

Janp105, I don't think it'll fix the grain on the screen this is just to fix the washed out color.

Well screens aside the 1530 is sweet I love it. If you are not a discerning user that can't tell the difference between TN and S-IPS the screen is not going to matter to you.

No LED on the 1530 in Canada. If I had the option when I bought mine I would have paid for it. LED is generally more evenly backlit and you won't have the grainy problem. Go look at a new Mac Book Pro and you'll see an LED screen in person. They look very nice. Although this LG panel in my 1530 is frickin suhweet too :)

Got my XPS m1530 1680x1050 yesterday. I got screwed with the Samsung sec3350 display. It is noticably grainy. I am getting an exchange because the casing has some imperfections. I asked the dell rep about getting my exchange laptop with the LG screen and i was told that the LG (lplf300) are on backorder! So i will very likely get screwed again. I would highly recommend agenst buying a XPS m1530 at this time, you'll most certinly get a Samsung display. :(

LED 1440x900 for XPS is available in the small business section on the US site.
    Wonder how good it is.
I have WXGA+ LG panel and it is awesome. I am still within 21-day return period with Dell.

Although changing the settings under the nvidia control panel helps with the contrast it doesn't help with the graininess and the low brightness. With my Samsung, I also noticed that the panel wasn't evenly lit. I had dark spots on the bottom right corner. When I got the LG exchange I noticed the difference from the moment the blue DELL logo appeared during boot. With my Samsung, the Dell logo was pixelated and the graininess showed. The LG panel is also more evenly lit throughout the panel.

I decided to contact Dell's email support about getting a replacement screen for the Samsung WSXGA+. They replied back that the only part number they could order for an XPS M1530 is Y274C 15.4WSXGA+ LCD Service Kit, M1530. She apologized as she could not check what manufacturer this LCD kit is and was willing to set up the dispatch order right away. That was a surprisingly hassle free response without having to do all kinds of additional testing and jump through hoops with 10 reps to even get them to agree to replace it.

It seems like many people have said the LG screen may out of stock and am afraid they would just send another Samsung. Not sure if there is anything else I can do except see what the screen is when the part arrives.

I don't doubt that other people have had dim, dull and grainy Samsung screens, but mine does have a very bright fluorescent display, and the whites are fairly white. But it does have this silvery, kind of sparkley look to it that just may be the screen coating and you need to be looking at the screen dead on center to get the full brightness.

I just wanted to inform everyone i spoke with a XPS rep today and asked them what screen the new 1440x900 LED LCD display came with (the one in the business section). They said:

Kevin: "I see that the XPS m1530 in the business section now has an option for an 1440x900 LED LCD display. Do you know the model of display that this will be? Is it both Samsung and LG shipping or just lg?"

Agent: "We will not be sure what make the display would be ."

Kevin: "so it could come with either LG or Samsung?"

    Agent: "Yes"

I also called Dell Small Business and the rep said there is currently no way to tell and to assume it could be either Samsung or lg.

Seems just too early to tell. I would hold off until they announce it.

After two screen swaps, one outright return and a new order placement, then yet another screen swap I finally have my LG screen!!! Yay

The difference truly is night and day, the Samsung made my eyes hurt in anything but high performance mode. Why I wonder does dell even bother to ship these Samsung screens? I can't imagine how it could be more cost effective for them to send outsourced techs to swap the screens when they could just ship LG's exclusively.

Unless it has something to do with meeting sales numbers and meeting sales projections for their stock price. Consipiracy?????

for people who have actually had a tech person come to replace your display... did the person come when they said they would?

I took off half a day of work because they initially said they would come at 1pm... then I get a call saying they can't come until 4:30-5:00... which means that I had to miss my class. It's 6:30pm right now and they still haven't come... what kind of freaking bs is this and knowing my luck my replacement will be another samsung. so frustrating...

How did you convince the Dell rep to send a tech to replace your display? They kept telling me it wasn't a defect so they wouldn't do anything. Are you still within your 21 day return period?

My screen had some lcd bleeding at the bottom so I started off by telling them that. Then I said my main issue with the display was that it was fuzzy and that it was giving me headaches, which it was. I tried to avoid saying it was grainy because I just figured they probably wave a red flag every time someone says their screen is grainy.

But many people in the forum have said that they called, directly said they had a grainy screen and asked for a replacement and got it.

I think it really does come down to who you talk to.

After talking to tech support via chat 3 times then calling them twice, I finally got a tech to come down to my house. When he was done, I had another Samsung screen (though I was promised an LG) and the top left part of my keyboard was completely loose and definitely not assembled correctly.

I'm not dealing with this anymore, nor do I want to risk getting another grainy screen.

I'm going for a new XPS M1530 (returning this one) and getting the new 1920x1200 screen. Strangely enough, the cost of the laptop (after my college discount) is about $80 cheaper, including tax and shipping. Anyone know if the 1920x1200 screens have the same grain problem?

Attached are three photos of the WSXGA+ screen. Any opinions on whether you would keep this screen or try to get a replacement? Yes it's the SEC5330. The original images were 2 MB but had to downsize them to upload to the forum. The white screen backgrounds are actually brighter in real life than the photos indicate.

Well, I've just been told that due to antiboycotting laws there is no way they will replace a Samsung with an LG. I think I'll just leave the issue here and return the Dell. It's been about two weeks and at least 15 hours of my time, I won't be buying a dell again.

I feel the same Tendril... I just called and tried xps chat both which were pointless. I figure I'll try one more time calling tomorrow and then I'll just return the laptop, it's not worth the grief.

just for kicks... this was how part of my phone call went.

support: can you give me your service tag please?
    me: xxBxZxx
support: (he tries to read it back) xx D as in dog?
me: no B as in boy
support: ok... (reads the next letter) V as in victor?
me: no Z as in Zed or Zebra
support: ok so V as in victor?
me: NO... Z like Zebra... as in, the last letter of the alphabet.
    support: V as in victor?
me: Z... THE LAST LETTER IN THE ALPHABET
    support: ok Z like zebra?

    sigh...
