Apparently they are all out of LG screens across Australia and New Zealand and dell has decided to purchase 100% of their screens from Samsung. Apparently the four different screen models were trials when the XPS 1530 was released and they have settled on the RW985 part.

Spent a fairly long time (45 minutes) talking with the XPS technical support manager, Daniel about the issue and he explained it all to me but said there is just no way I they will be replacing any further LG screens in Aus. I'm being setup with a free return though because they initially tried charging ~$160 and that just wasn't going to happen after wasting so much of my time over the last week jumping between stories before finally being given a real answer (including 3 promised call backs before the end of the day that never happened).

The XPS tech support manager also said that the Samsung SEC3350 (RW985) is actually a WLED screen where the others were not? That doesn't seem right to me at all as they have only just released the WLED screens to small buisness in the US but when I raised my concerns he said he was sure that it was a WLED and that is why they are not very bright compared to the LG which is a TFT.

Is that right? I was sure the screen was a TFT, I've only seen two WLED's and they were both far better than this screen.

Well that's the end of the saga for me. Good luck to the rest of you, I failed.

That's funny! Not your ordeal, the antiboycotting laws...

Honestly, the only chance you have of getting your Samsung replaced with a LG is what Bertiew coined as 'brute force'. Keep getting them to send you a replacement laptop and extend you retrun period until you get one with a LG panel. My 3rd laptop had the WD306 in it.

Apparently the tech is not the very bright one. This is definitely NOT a WLED screen. LED screens are much brighter than the TFT, and certainly NOT dimmer.

Yeah, which is exactly what I said. He said he was the manager and was reading from their product description sheet and did not want to listen for a second when I said it was not an LED, was listed as a TFT on their site and that I've never seen an LED screen that was that dark.

Other than that he was helpful in the end in that he approved the technical refund.

So they came out and put a new RW985 in my 1530. It's WORSE than my old one.

I'll be ringing Dell again today and if I get no luck this time, I'm returning it.

Rang XPS support again, and told them my situation. The XPS support tech ordered me another LCD, and said he'd "see what he can do in regards to the XK309".

Rang back an hour later to find the status, and the idiot who answered the phone informed me "yes sir you have an RW985 on the way, it should arrive tomorrow".

I told him to cancel that and order me an XK309. He said he would escalate my case because I have so many calls logged under my customer number, and he would attempt to obtain the XK309.

We'll see....I want to send this back, but I love the M1530 apart from the screen. I'd really just like to get my hands on a decent LCD display!!!!

The Dell LCD panel display issue reminds me of a song--it just goes on and on

Working hard to get my fill,
    Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
    Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
    Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

    (chorus)

    Dont stop believin
    Hold on to the feelin
    Streetlight people

    It sure does.

I'm now told that I can't have anything except an RW985, as this is what my notebook came with.

    Back she goes!!

Hmm I thought I'd try again, and the XPS tech informed me that I'm best off contacting Customer Support if I wish to get an LCD other than an RW985, as he isn't authorised to send any other LCD apart from the one that was included with the notebook when built (which is the RW985).

One more try tomorrow!!!! I LOVE this laptop apart from the LCD, and now that I've got everything installed on it, I don't really want to part with it.

I'll have the tech come out tomorow as before, to install yet another RW985 to see if its better than this one (which is worse than the original one)

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I'm trying again and again and again.

I finally got through to a VERY VERY helpful XPS tech called Keith (if you're in Australasia and you call XPS support, ask for him, he is great).

I basically confirmed that I'm getting an RW985, a new cable, and a new LCD bezel (the current one doesn't sit very flush after being pulled off once).

I also asked him about why I can't get an XK309, and he said probably because they were out of stock.

I got him to check stock of the XK309, WD309 and the NX380 (which is the AU Optronics display). He said in Australia, there are 0 of each available. In Singapore, where the parts ship to Australia from, there are 0 of each of those available.

They are ONLY shipping M1530's in Australasia at the moment with the Samsung displays by the sounds of it.

I told him about my grainy issues and he said that some users are having this problem, so he will note on my customer record that I wish to have the RW985 swapped with an XK309 once they become available.

He told me to ring in a few weeks and check if these are back into stock, because for now, there are none available whatsoever.

Sooo, I'll stick with the crappy Samsung for now and I'll keep trying XPS support next week and the week after, and the weeks after that, to see if I can get my LG sent out.

If not, I'll bite the damn bullet and buy one off eBay once I finally get sick of ringing these c*nts.

As I said, I love the notebook...hate the LCD.

Wasn't there a fire at an LG displays plant in Koreea recently? Maybe that's why there are no more LGs available right now.

I've got a ****ty SEC3350 which came with a glitch in it, and is really dim compared to my old lappy's monitor - I can get it replaced, but I wanted to wait until they're shipping all LG's - is now a good time to replace it?

that is a load of crap. i just got a hold of a XPS tech last night that was very happy to hook me up with an LG. I guess i just complained too much or the guy/girl was just very nice because this last experence with support was AWESOME. I even got a phone call and email from a Dell rep this morning saying they would like to start the process of replacing my screen from a Samsung to an LG! The best part is the rep that call/emailed me was one that said no to me about the issue 2 days ago!!

I believe they are actually out of stock on the LG displays for another two weeks. Please keep this in mind because i was also told that all new orders are currently only being shipped with Samsung displays.

I was also informed that the new 1920 hi def display is also shipping with Samsung/Lg displays!!! i couldn't believe it!! maybe this is just temporary but i wouldn't risk it!

No, diffidently not. I would call and tell them about the problem so they can note it down that you will be calling in two weeks when they receive more LG displays for a replacement. I would also suggest you talk with the XPS support, not customer care.

Everyone take a tip from blah001666. Use the word fuzzy to describe your Samsung display. I think Grainy is raising flags.

Are you serious? That is the biggest load of crap I've heard in a while - the fire was at a BATTERY plant, no LCDs were manufactured there..

At least Dell is getting creative with its excuses

So I just got off the phone with XPS support. I have an issue with my keyboard (the corner of it is bent up under the control key, so the key won't go down all the way). They sent a dispatch out for it (supposed to get a call from the support "specialist" tomorrow). While he was at it, I asked about the screen. He just told me to talk to the person tomorrow.

Has anyone had any truly knowledgable people answer the phones over there? This person was just not with it at all. I think I told him about 8 times that this was an issue under the control key on the lower left-hand side of the keyboard... really kind of ridiculous.

the part where you told him to search.

im sick of people just saying "use the seach feature/button" when in a quick sentence or two the question can be answered just as easily.

I answered his question and pointed out gently that this has been answered before and that the search function was a good thing to use.

I had a Customer Care rep ring me this morning...after my 10 calls to XPS support yesterday to see if I could get a different result out of each person, I rang Customer Care after hours and got through to their "reception", who left a message with Customer Care to ring me back today.

Well, they did, Spoke to Sandra and she seemed very helpful. I told her of my issue and she is going to speak to tech support and parts department to see if I can get an XK309 to replace my problems that I'm having with the RW985.

The fact that the tech who replaced the screen logged on the service report that its "worse than the one that was replaced" really helped... if you get your screen replaced with another grainy Samsung, make sure the tech notes it down on the report!!!!

I also asked her to find out about the WUXGA screens and I even said I would pay the difference to have this installed. She said she would enquire to find out if this available as an option. I also told her that I don't mind waiting for the XK309 or WD306 to come back into stock via back order if need be, as I'll make do with the RW985 until then.

She seemed very accomodating, I think its because I was clear and assertive rather than aggressive, and was willing to make any compromises if required to get the LCD I wanted, rather than demanding it on the spot.

    Fingers crossed!!

Dell was nice enough to ship out a replacement screen kit yesterday without too much of a hassle. Even though I requested an LG Phillips screen, the technician received the part today and they shipped another Samsung. The tech said he would send it back and contact the parts department to try and get an LG screen. I have my doubts that he will have any more luck in trying to get Dell to ship out a certain manufacturer, but we'll see. I wonder how many times you can keep ordering and shipping back the screen until they finally send the right one?

Wow - What arrogance from Dell's customer service!! Or should I say customer "dis-service". They apparently closed my service call case today because I would not accept the Samsung screen. Another chat service tech informed me I will not get to choose which screen supplier it is replaced with and that I can return the system if I like.

I have purchased 2 other Dell systems over the last 5 years and Dell has definitely lost me as a customer.

I had to laugh when i saw this posted on Direct2Dell about what people in Germany really think about their customer service. They should try the survey in the US and see what happens.

Sooo.. this is still a problem with NEW 1530 systems? Why hasn't the other Samsung screen been removed from the supply pool if so many customers complain about it?

I'm curious.. is there a photo somewhere that compares the two screen side by side? I have no idea what a bad screen is supposed to look like.

well I ordered my xps like March 29 and received it on the April 4 and it was a brand new unit. Samsung is definitely still in the pool. Mine has the Samsung screen and I got one replacement screen so far and that was also Samsung. I've had hell just trying to get another replacement sent out... I'm going to try a couple more times and then I'll rid my self of Dell for good.

I'd more be more than happy if I had a good display, but as it is now I just feel like never dealing with Dell ever again for anything. I've always built my desktops and this was my first laptop... too bad I can't build my own laptop.

It's the closest you can get to building your own laptop. Buy it "barebones" and put everything in it yourself if you really wanted to.

Well I'm having a new replacement 1530 sent to me not because of the screen(I was happy enough with the samsucks), but to make long story short. I checked the new service tag on my system and it says

    1 KR515 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WXGA+, TLF, LGP, V2

Looks like I'm getting LG lol. I didn't even mention anything about my screen when I called in for a replacement. I won't hold my breathe until I open the box tomorrow and see if it's really superior to the samsung by a side by side comparison. LG screens are out there guys it's pretty much pure luck whether you get LG or Samsung.

It looks like KR515 is the new part # for 1440x900 LG

Total time spent getting an LG 10 mins on the phone.

Even if that's what it says, it could still easily turn out to be a Samsung. It's happened to me before.

It said I was getting an LGP screen and it came out to be another Samsung. But hopefully, it'll be an LG. Good luck

The samsung 1440x900 isn't that bad a screen at all. The issue is mainly with the 1680, the 1440 samsung a mate has is great.

you know guys....I was just thinking.
Maybe you could check the outlet.....call the outlet support...specify that you wan a system with the lg part number. Buy the system swap the screen...and send the system back. Can't be worse than buying new systems and doing that.
My point being, the outlet might be more willing to work with you.
By the way, i bought me system from there....and am quite satisfied.
I did request a screen change, and install the screen myself. :)
Still havn't figured out what to tell the tech...but after reading several posts about tech's bungling systems...i desided to do it myself.
It's quite easy...you don't have to take the screen of at the hinges are the manual says....it's not at all nesesary.
I changed out my screen in under an hours.....and have never done it before.
I should mention though...that my brother helped out...and he had watch a tech do the same thing on his laptop earlier. SO that did help.

    cheers. :)

Well Dell has told me that the "XK309 is unavailable", and they will NOT replace my RW985 with an XK309.

BUT, if I want an XK309, its $308 including delivery and they can have one to me in 6 weeks time.

    BAH!!!

I'll have my RW985 replaced with another RW985 and then I'll talk to the tech to see if he can pull some strings with the parts department about having it replaced with an XK309.

So has anyone actually seen a 1920x1200 screen in action?

    Hi-

I have my XPS 1530 for two weeks now, but the screen looks a little grainy to me (not too much). This is especially evident when I change my desktop background with one of my pics. I have the LG Philips LPLDF00 panel 1440-900. From what I read on this thread, this is suppose to be the better LCD panel (I can’t even imagine what the Samsung looks like). I have the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M card. Are there any settings (I have set for highest resolution) which would improve the picture? Would updating the ‘driver’ help?
