checked!
mine is SEC3350.. looks pretty good.
don't really know what everybody is talking here about.

My WXGA SEC3358 is bit grainy, maybe I will ring Dell again to get screen replacement.
But I think I will wait until end on this year and check M1530 at Dell outlets if there any improvement. -

How would one find what type of LCD they have (Samsung, LG, etc.)?
-
I agree most people probably don't notice difference b/c they don't know any better. -

I had a question regarding screen replacement... I have had my system for about 4-5 months (and have a 4year warranty+accidental damage coverage) and have noticed some extra light bleeding and graininess. My resolution is 1280x800. Would it be possible to have the replacement as 1440x900 if I paid a bit extra since I don't want to have to deal with this again?
The Dell Rep I spoke with said that this is impossible and you MUST replace it with the EXACT same resolution screen, even if you are willing to pay the difference. He said my only option would be to buy a new screen at full price and have this broken one sitting around doing nothing (wtf)?. I think this is kind of ridiculous seeing as how I got the 4 year/accidental coverage.
Any help would be appreciated! -
Hello,
I got my XPS 1530 about a week ago, the display is from Samsung (SEC3157).
All in all it doesn't seem as bad as many described it: The brightness is ok, no grainy (at least as far as I'm concerned), but the illumination isn't the best, since it's getting a bit darker at the right side, which is a little bit annoying when for instance surfing on the Internet.
Although it's nothing serious I'm thinking about calling the DELL support and asking if I could get a LG display. I would've done so long ago, but I'm worrying I could get a worse display, or dead pixels etc.
So I'm still searching for a proper comparison between a "good" Samsung display and a LG display to assess whether it's worth the effort and possible "risk".
I shot some photos of mine, but it's very hard to find the right exposure time, the right angle etc., so the pictures don't really represent the actual appearence of the display, in fact it looks better in reality.
What do you think? Does the LG look much better, or is just the illumination a bit better? Oh, and I heard there's a faint "buzzing" noise when reducing the brightness of the display, how many of you can actually hear it?
PS: The "grainyness" in some pictures is caused by the camera -
It seems that the majority of the posts describe a large difference in quality between samsung and LG for the wsxga+ resolution rather than wxga+. I would definately call for replacement though

Got my m1530 a little over a week ago, Samsung panel (1440 x 900). I wasn't sure about the grain at first, but now its very apparent, especially in games, movies, and on lighter colours in Windows. I live in South Africa, and spent about 2 and a half hours trying to get tech support to agree to replace it. In the end they made me feel like i was trying to swindle them or something, when in actual fact I'm just trying to get my moneys worth!
They were trying to find contradictions in what I had told them, and the head of tech told me that I had an LG panel according to the build record. This is of course complete nonsense, and he didn't realize that I knew how to check the panel code in Windows! I'm moving to the UK next week, so I'm just going to get it sorted out there. Hopefully the support there is more interested in helping customers than avoiding call outs! Not at all impressed with my first encounter with Dell support. Good riddance Africa is all I can say! We don't have dedicated XPS support here, is it available in the UK?
Apart from the screen, the machine is amazing. Lightning fast, great build quality. -
Hello
I ordered a the dell xps m1530 the 9th of june.
I chose the following screen:
-WUXGA (1920 x 1200) 15,4 inch with TrueLife™
Are there any chances of getting a grainy, without "good" brightness samsung screen?
thanks in advance -
model SEC3255 (I believe that is the only screen dell currently provides @ this resolution) -
Hmmm too early to call this a fixed issue??
-
After a long battle, finally I got LG screen for my M1530!!
LG (LPL0301) vs Samsung (SEC3358)
1. sharper with zero grains!!
2. much much more brighter and higher contrast
3. better colour reproduction (no need to tweaks so much at Nvidia Control)
4. wider viewing angles
with LG screen my M1530 is perfect and now I'm very happy -
I got my new XPS!!
The Samsung 3350 WSXGA+ is not grainy.
There is no leakage either.
The viewing angles and brightness are comparable to my WXGA 15' LG monitor from 2004 HP pavilion ze4900 and better than my WXGA+ 14' LG monitor from 2006 Dell Latitude D620.
all in all..its a keeper -
Hey guys, how long can you wait before asking for an exchange on a screen? It's been about 6 months since I bought mine. Something about my screen (1280x800 w/ Truelife, manufacturer is CPT) just feels off and I don't want to put up with it any more, if possible. I think the SEC in my previous Vostro 1500 was better. The LG's mentioned in this thread seem really nice and I'm curious if I can still ask for a replacement and would it be covered under warranty?
-
You should be able to get a replacement of the same resolution but you would need a better reason than 'it feels off'
-
Well, brightness, contrast, and color levels aren't quite as good as I'm used to even on my budget Toshibas. I guess it's not really grainy though. Does that qualify? If so, does a tech just come with a new screen to install (or do I have to do it myself) and how soon do they come? Perhaps it's just me, but it doesn't seem right that budget laptops had better screens than my first mainstream/premium laptop.
-
A lot of people had those problems and Dell sent a tech to replace the part. You should be able to get it replaced since its only been 6 months. give it a shot at least.
-
For those of you that replaced your screens, did you call XPS tech support or XPS hardware support?
-
I got my xps m1530 2 days ago
It has no grainy screen and the contrast/quality is very good. It is the 1920x1200 one from samsung.
I just have one question: was i supposed to get that CD case with the earphones (i ordered the laptop in switzerland)?
thanks -
My first post. I'd like to say thanks to all of the contributors to this forum, I've had my awful Samsung panel successfully replaced and I am now finally happy with my XPS M1530 laptop.
I basically complained about poor image quality and viewing angles to the support desk and after four very painful phone calls and repeating myself (in the style of Jeremy Paxman) I managed to get a replacement panel.
The tech came last week and fitted a AU0187B replacement LCD which is manufactured by Quanta (mfr part number QD15AL01). I have not seen the widely praised LG in action but this must be as good. The screen quality was a revelation campared to the 'grainy' and dull Samsung. Clean whites, excellent viewing angles and very good brightness.
Getting the LCD replaced does involve going through some hassle but it is well worth it if you are not happy with the screen that has been supplied. -
Hi all and thanks for a very informative thread.
I have a couple of questions.
I bought my XPSM1530 from PC World in the UK. Tbh, I wouldn't normally ever buy anything from PC world, but I was in urgent need of a laptop due to a change in work circumstances and the XPS M1530 seemed to fit the bill. The PC World spec comes with the 1280x800 screen (which is fine for my needs).
I'm now slightly concerned by my screen, although I'm not sure it's that grainy colour definition and viewing angles are not as good as the screen I had on my old Sony Vaio (not sure of exact model as it was provided by work). Being slightly concerened by the screen I thought I'd try to check whether it was a Samsung or LG, so as described in this thread I checked the hardware ID from the device manager. On my system this is just reported as MONITOR\Default_Monitor. Next step was to check the service tag on the Dell UK website. Here the screen is reported as "DISPLAY 15.4" WXGA (1280X800) WITH TRUEL" - it appears as the full details are truncated. I assume that the service tag of my machine is identical to all received by PC world in the same batch as it appears as if PC World (or DSG group) received 50 of these machines which were despatched on 19/5/2008 (all quantities on the order related to my service tag are 50 and there are no Dell part numbers shown).
So, my question is how do I find out the manufacturer of the screen? Any help greatly appreciated - just to put my mind at rest.
Cheers! -
Just wondering, did you specifically ask for a non-Samsung panel, and if so did they agree to that? Did you speak to anyone who sounded familiar with the issue?
thanks -
Hello everyone I have some bit of information to share.
After a lot of refunds/replacements I have finally settled with this XPS 1530 in my sign, which was shipped with LG LPLDF00 WXGA 1440 res.
Previously I had always ordered with 1280 res and the screen was always good, I was lucky.
I wud like to add though, LG LPLDF00 on my xps is grainier than the previous screens I had, but I realised this today, it has the best viewing angles I have ever seen on a dell. This is very important aspect, and I love it. -
i ordered mine with WUXGA hi-def screen on: 6/11 ~> original ship date: 6/26 ~> delayed til 7/2 ~> delayed til 7/10 -
It is really based on luck - I know it sounds ridiculous because it is! -
i called dell and *****ed at them after they sent me my 2nd delay notice.
i asked the rep what was holdin up my friggin order...it shouldn't take a month to build a damn laptop.
he said "there is a manufacturing problem...yur order is waitin for a BATTERY."
a f'in battery. . .!?!??!?!?!?!?!?! -
Just posting to back up some other recent posters - the new 1680x1050 Samsung SEC3350 screens are far better quality!
I posted in this thread earlier this year when I got the bad Samsung screen. It was obviously grainy, bad viewing angles and generally sub-standard.
I was told the LG screen was not yet available in NZ but got it replaced no problems with an AUO, which was far better.
Unfortunately that laptop got stolen and I just got the replacement - with a SEC3350 screen again , but there is now no grainyness at all and the brightness I would say is roughly the same as the AUO. Viewing angles are still bad but it's not anything actually defective.
Hopefully the rest of the world gets the same, as this seems to mean there are no bad screens now. -
Hi
I just recieved my m1530, what is meant by grainyness. My screen has like a satiny sheen to it, looks a bit like oil, is this what grainyness is. By the way its a samsung. -
-
ok...here goes my first post!
i thnk my xps 1530 has a grainy screen....i checked with the device manager nd instead of showing a code lik SEC or LPL,it just shows MONITOR/default_monitor
wat the heck myt be the problem for it not showing the monitor manufacturer? -
-
@fountainhead....thnks,but this is all it shows

wonder if Dell did something to prevent the ID from showing up because of all the issues...

and from the pic attached in my previous post, does the screen look grainy?

I will say this...don't look for trouble where there isn't any. If you have to ask, your display probably isn't grainy. -
yea got it....we can not possibly screenshot a grainy screen
but after reading ab this stuff,i realised tht it,infact,is grainy
i bought my xps in india nd will be leaving for the US in a less than a week....any idea as to how i may be able to ask dell for a speedy switch of display panels? -
So I wanted to upgrade my display as I got the 1280x800 display. I ordered from E-BAY what was supposed to be the EXACT PN LG Display, but when it showed up today it is a Samsung. The only difference is it is a LTN154P4..and from reading it seems the LTN154P3's were the grainy ones.
So..is this possibly an improved model that won't be grainy? -
Well I think the key is to AVOID displays that are listed as compatible. I think Dell must have only certain Hardware ID's identifiable by the bios, and if the compatible display isn't one of them it won't work.
This explains why LP154WE2(TL)(B2) from LG work, but a LP154WE2 Compatible won't.
Now I get to fight with the ebay seller who advertized this display as an LP154WE2(TL)(B2) EXACT PN when it wasn't....gotta love that. -

I couldn't resist posting... one of the longest Notebook review threads, and page 200.
All manufacturers of LCD Panels have some grainy panels slip through the cracks,I have owned quite a few laptops with grainy LG Panels, they are NOT the holy grail. Its a shame that otherwise great laptop designs are marred by one of the most important components. -
I have a slightly grainy SEC3157 1440x900 WXGA+ LCD on my M1530 and I'm wondering: if I were to somehow convince customer service to send a tech over to my place to replace the screen with an LG model, how long would it take for someone to actually arrive? I only realized this is a problem today after owning the computer for about 1.5 months :/ and I am moving in about a week and a half and have little time to get the screen replaced >_<
Is the LG that much better?.. :/
Thanks! -
Anyone?.><
-
i could not find any thread talking about which one is better, dw306 or xk309, anyone know? thanks
-
some people say dw306 from service tag can see it is v2, but some people say it has been discontinued. i google dw306 cannot find many but xk309 got a lot. ebay.com and other dell parts shop cannot even find the dw306... then from this point, it seems xk309 is better? or dw306 is indeed newer but discontinued? thanks
How do I fix my m1530 Grainy Screen?
