I just got my XPS M1530 today. Opened it up and found out I had the Samsung screen  Called up Dell XPS tech support, told them my screen was grainy etc. They had me go through the basic troubleshooting steps to make sure it wasnt the graphics card.... (pointless, but it is their job and it makes them much happier if you dont argue). I told him about the part number I found on this forum (XK309), and he put me on hold for about 10 minutes to talk to his supervisor. He came back and told me to expect the part by tomorrow afternoon :D The whole process took maybe 30 minutes.

This is great customer service if you ask me. I am a IT specialist for a state university, and we deal with about every laptop manufacturer out there, HP, Apple, Sony, IBM, etc. Dell is by far the easiest to deal with. What other company would allow a customer to request the specific brand of a replacement LCD, and then ship it out same day? For those who have been having difficulties getting this part ordered, try being nice to tech support despite the idiotic things they ask. A happy tech might feel like going out of his/her way to get you the screen you want.

Is there any way to ensure you receive an LG screen?

Not that I know of. I thought I was receiving an LG screen because my part number was: XK309 LCD, 15.4WSXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., TLF, LGP. Turns out, I got another Samsung, got it installed today, it's the exact same one and the graininess is still there. WTF? Luckily the technician who did the installation was very helpful and agreed with me that the screen was complete garbage. He had also said he saw other XPS m1530's and said their screens were amazing. I paid over 2 Gs for this piece of equipment. I'm gonna call Dell later tonight and talk with a supervisor, this is really ridiculous.

I'll let you guys know what happens. And if you guys have any advice for me, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm kind of thinking they don't have any LG screens anymore and every is Samsung because that's all that it can be for the WSXGA+.

Well, I can now say that I'm in the omg_this_screen_sux0rs club. I tried really hard to look at it without any bias, but sitting next to these two Viewsonic monitors I've got on my desk, it just looks like garbage. All of the things you guys mentioned about it are 100% true, so I'm going to give them a call during my lunch break tomorrow to see what I can get. g33k, keep us posted. It sounded like gfresh was going to get what he asked for, but he obviously got shafted again. Sorry to hear that man.

At any rate, I think if we press this issue enough we'll see some results. Good luck guys, and keep posting your results here.

Well, I got my 1530 a week ago and it is almost perfect! Except for the samsung screen. I told myself before it came that I wouldn't be influenced by the bad experiences of the people on this forum. I tried to live with it for a couple days and came to the conclusion that it is simply a terrible screen. Mine has rotten viewing angles, bad backlight bleeding, and some grainyness. The absolute killer is the brightness though. I have to keep it at MAX brightness to do anything.

I ordered a new screen and the tech called today and its a new samsung. The tech was great though, I told him my concerns about the LG vs Samsung and he said he had heard other complaints on the Samsungs already. So he called Dell back to see if he could get an LG for me. He ordered it but didn't sound too confident that we'll see a LG when it comes in tomorrow. Right now the xk309 is listed on my Dell service call status, but I'm not holding my breath on it. If a Samsung comes in for me tomorrow the unit is going back. :( Man, so close to having the perfect laptop.

I'm in the UK and received my M1530 today. The laptop is beautiful, the screen is goddam awful  Ive got Brightness on MAX but it is still dim. It is also grainy but the worst thing about this screen has got to be the viewing angles ! Im sitting 2 ft away from the laptop and I cant get an even contrast across the screen even by moving my head back and forth. The thing sucks big time. On the phone to Dell right now. Either the guarantee me an LG screen or I'm having my money back. Gutted :(

Spoke to a Dell technician in Ireland who couldnt guarantee me an LG replacement, said I'd probably end up with another Samsung screen !! Took a refund. Oh well, their loss. Any idea if the M1530 will come with better screens later in the year as I really like the look of the laptop ? :(

Well my thread is getting no attention, and it's probably because of this thread that I failed to see. Sorry if I created an unnecessary post. I will just copy and paste my issue in this section and hope someone can help me.

Ok, so I ordered a replacement screen for my crappy Samsung a few days ago. It's now on the way, but I'm not sure if I am getting an LG or not. When I go to check my support history it almost appears as if they've sent me a completely new laptop, but I checked multiple times before they sent it to make sure I only got the screen. There is a service kit in the history from yesterday, but there are things like dvd burners etc included on the order. Anyway, it lists two screens...not really sure how to read all this I suppose. Here's what it says:

    bezel, Liquid Crystal Display
    Latitude, Azida/Manila, V2

    Service Kit,Liquid Crystal
    Display,14.1,WXGA,VESA,D620
    V2

There are also about 100 other things that it says I've ordered in the past few days (no exaggeration), mostly included with the Service Kit. Anyone have any idea what I'm actually getting? Oh, and this is the first and only laptop I've ordered thru Dell...so I have no idea what a Latitude has to do with anything.

Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place...what's the best way to check their site for the part that they sent me? Thanks in advance!

I just got my replacement screen in and it is an AU Optronics or whatever. I haven't seen too many folks that have these...how does it compare to the Samsung and LG?

    Edit to include display description:
    SVC;LCD;15.4WXGA;TLF;M1530

    Item number: C931C

I have no idea how to read that, but it should be a 1280x800 screen. Can anyone confirm that it is?

Well I just got off the phone with customer support and let me tell you those people have NO idea what they're talking about. Somehow after 2 hours of transfers and waiting on hold and repeating information I managed to get an LG screen shipped to me, but I'm not even sure I'm getting the right thing. The lady kept saying "Oh sir this new screen is digital so its much better than the one you have now that is proven to be bad" wtf? Then she tried to send me a samsung one and I said absolutely not and she said that it was digital and it would be sent by Dell so It was not a faulty samsung screen. Again wtf?

Then when I asked what res was the screen she was sending she didn't know and she would have to go through the whole process again to tell me exactly. She reasurred me that the new screen was indeed digital though.  When I asked how it was going to be installed she said "oh its very easy all you do is hook it up!" .........what?

I can say honestly that I will never deal with Dell again. I buy a "premium" laptop with a worse screen than my 3 year old Gateway then I get the worst customer support I think possible. well whatever shows up at my door on Feb 7th at least I know that I got it for free.

This might be kind of obvious to some, but it just really dawned on me. The reality is that a lot of people do not realize that they have grainy screens. I looked at my dad's Dell laptop, a business laptop of some kind, I'm not sure exactly what it is. But HE HAS A GRAINY SCREEN TOO. Just as bad as mine. The thing this, he didn't even know there was a problem with his screen and he's been putting up with it for quite some time, completely unaware that his screen was awfully defective. My point is, Dell might not have acknowledged this problem, because even though there are so many grainy, crappy screens, the majority of people don't even notice it.

    People are stupid.

After six calls, three screens and three weeks of waiting for my screen to be replaced with a usable lcd (1680x1050) I have just received the following info.
I also received a phone call from from a Dell rep assuring me that I was getting a NEW LG XK309 1680x1050!

I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
    Dude I'm getting an LG!

I am going to order the m1530 tomorrow (last day of the sale). I use 1680x1050 on my g1s and like the resolution, but with all the problems with that particular Samsung SEC3550, is it worth it to stay at 1440x900 and the much better chance to get an LG screen?

Is there any correlation between screen and color of the top. I'm wondering if the color of the top comes pre-built with the screen.

    Hello!

I have a Dell XPS m1530 and it has the Samsung screen. Excuse me for seeming dull, but I am still unclear about what I am supposed to do.

Could somebody please give me directions about how to switch the screen for LG (who to contact? what to say? how to make sure it is the right thing? ETC>)

    thanks!

To be short, there's nothing really you can do right now. They're out of LG replacement screens. The only option right now is to get a Samsung. And only a small percentage of those do not suck. I just talked to a guy in the "Thinking about products to buy" under Dell's customer support, he was very helpful. He said he's aware of the problem and has been researching it for 3 days. I asked him what to do seeing as how I already had my screen replaced once and since that didn't do anything, he said he would try and find a solution and talk to someone higher up at Dell. He was very helpful and down to Earth. When he emails me I'll let you know what he says.

You're probably right, and I can only imagine how frustrated you are. But at the same time I can't help but be encouraged by the fact that some people are still receiving LG's upon request. I called support today and went through the troubleshooting procedures and discussed the problem candidly with my tech. He requested the XK309 for me, and now I'm waiting to see what will come of it. Don't give up! I think a positive attitude and courtesy can go a long way towards getting what you want when dealing with support personnel. Actually, I know this because I happen to be one that just moved to sysadmin status. :p

Still though, I'm not sure if I buy the fact that they could be entirely out of LG screens. I'm sure that they bought a ton of the Samsungs at a lower price and it's all business and logistics from there, but it's not like a huge player like Dell who moves parts and systems across the globe every day can't secure a shipment of some decent LCD's. I refuse to believe that.

One more thought while others are trying to draw some correlation here - Assuming that the LG screen is a higher costing part, perhaps those who spent a bit more on their particular configuration, thus inflating Dell's margin on the sale a bit, are more likely to get the higher costing replacement part? I don't know about you guys, but I opted to get exactly what I needed, with room to upgrade RAM/HDD/service contracts as necessary later.

I just talked to a replacement parts guy at Dell who said they were currently out of stock of the LG screen 1680x1050 (XK309) but that some were in production and they should have them soon. He knew the part I was talking about, so it shouldn't be that hard to order a specific part, unless there are some communication issues between warranty and replacement parts. Like I said, I called replacement parts, asked them if they had that specific model number in, and he told me the information about it. I don't understand why some people can't just call tech support, tell them their screen sucks, and order the LG.

" I don't understand why some people can't just call tech support, tell them their screen sucks, and order the LG."

Believe me I tried. Let me say I really like this laptop. Its a good weight, and the build quality is top notch, if not for the display, it'd be the perfect notebook for me. That is why I'm so disappointed I'm unable to get the screen replaced. The first CS just lied and said they wouldn't ship th part out unless its an LG. Unfortunately I got a samsung shipped out to me and was told there was no record or notes of any kind that specified I wanted an LG. I called Tech support after the replacement Samsung panel was installed, told them that the screen was worse, and that I wanted the LG screen. He said there is only one part number. Long story short, I had him punch in the XK309 P/N which confused him even more. He finally just said "No we can't ship that part out to you, I don't think it will fit" Now I've thought about it a bit, I don't want a laptop that is firstly, by all definitions, "Defective" from the manufacturer, and secondly deal with a company that is shipping and knowingly charging people the same amount for 2 different parts of vastly different quality. The Samsung screen is abysmal, and really just unusable, especially when the notebook is not plugged in. Hopefully the default screen will be replaced by the LG in the future.

I love everything about the M1530 apart from the awful Samsung screen. I've had a refund as I couldnt be guaranteed an LG replacement screen. There's no other laptop out there at the moment that I want. I'm just going to sit and wait until Dell admit they have a problem with these screens and that they will stop using them, then they can have another go at taking my money. Maybe I'll have a long wait tho ????? . . . . .

Has anyone else been asked to provide photographic evidence of the screen difference by Dell? I was, lucky I had some. I have a case no but nothing has been logged online so I can't tell the current status. I was asked if I wished to request a screen replacement, you know what my answer was. I asked if I would receive the same screen again and was told an alternative part would be researched. I went through all the polite troubleshooting stuff, I have supplied sufficient evidence, now I just have to wait for the call.

    Thanks for the info!

So how did you "pose the problem" to them? What did you say that made them send you a new screen? I suppose one couldn't just say "I don't like the screen because it is too grainy>"

My tech was very helpful and courteous, so I reciprocated the attitude. When I was told that they weren't aware of any problems of the sort (described as grainy/dim screen with poor viewing angles) with that particular model, I kindly mentioned that I had been doing some research of my own and that the problem was actually well documented. I pointed him to some images of the difference in screen quality posted by some other users here and told him that mine does indeed look exactly like the one in the image. And it does.

After I was put on hold for a short while, he came back with the good news.

I haven't ordered an M1530, but I've already sent back an Inspiron 1420 (TERRIBLE 1440x900), a 1720 (EVEN WORSE 1920x1200), and an XPS M1210 (DISGUSTING 1280x800) for a refund. I even printed pictures of the horrible viewing angles of that actual M1210 and put them inside the box before I returned it. I said on the paper that they really need to stop using such garbage because that's one of the main reasons that people are returning notebooks and giving up on them. I'm sure it went right in the trash after a laugh by whoever processed the return, but that's about all I could do. To me, the LCD is the most important part of the notebook, and it's sad that it's the part of the majority of notebooks that suffers from unacceptable quality.

I'm waiting on a new 1520, but I went with the 1440x900 because it seems I'll have a better chance at getting an LG. This will be my last notebook purchase with Dell unless they come through with a halfway decent LCD. Other than the terrible LCD's, I don't have any issues with their hardware and I've never had any other issues, and have been quite pleased with the speed and stability, but of course, that's after re-partitioning the drives my way and doing fresh XP installs and maxing out the RAM with Corsair. The only reason I'm giving them one more chance is because I really like their internal custom options and with large coupons, it's hard to beat the deals they offer, but it's time for Dell to stop throwing junk at us and expecting us to be happy.

It's sad that people are resorting to choosing a certain rez screen because other screens have quality issues. I think the screen is one of the most important parts of a laptop too and if I want a WSXGA+ I wouldn't settle for a WXGA+ just like I wouldn't accept a sub standard screen.

I'm not really resorting to another resolution because 1440x900 is plenty good enough for a 15.4", so that resolution is fine, but I won't accept a low quality screen, that's for sure.

I've asked a few times but no one has answered yet...anyone have any idea how good the AU Optronics screens are? (1280x800) I have a tech coming to install it today to replace my Samsung. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I wish I had some information for you, but I think most of us posting in this thread are using the WSXGA+ 1680x1050 screens, no?

Well, so far I have a success story with acquiring the infamous LG WSXGA+ screen (XK309).

I went through 3 calls in XPS Technical Support, and eventually got somebody who could help me. At first he said it might not fit, but I insisted it would work. He then left me on hold to get it approved and magically he gave me my dispatch number, and said it would be 2-3 days for the tech to get out to my house. Hopefully he keeps his word and it ends up being a lg screen. :D

Also he said that Samsung owned LG, is this true? I highly doubt it and did some research on it and couldn't find anything.

The samsung screen sucks big time.. LG owns. But dont give up hope if u dont get an LG. There are other brands that can match LG for the m1530..! U are entitled to a GOOD screen not to a LG screen.. Just get it replaced by another screen wich is not samsung.. Just got my replacement screen and its very nice and it's not samsung and not LG.. Here's a pic on pixel level i just made it for another post; u can see it's totally not grainy and tbh, it's even brighter than LG. I am happy again :) Don't give up hope get it replaced first and just tell u dont want samsung..

So... I'm looking at the m1530 under the "best configuration." It says it comes with a 1440x900 screen. Is this the WXGA+ screen? also is this the one where the majrotiy has been LG? Thanks!

I pissed my pants when i looked at the brand but it's made by "Chunghwa".. It sounds like a Wookie but it's a flawless screen. I have it next to my LG screen in my Acer atm and its at least as sharp as the LG even a bit brighter on max. i even have to put it 1 click down or my eyes get annoyed but on some occasions it can be nice to have such a bright screen. Thumbs up for Mr. Chunghwa

    Hello

I wanted to switch my LCD screen (samsung) for free, but XPS tech chat said they couldn't because I have had the m1530 for too long....does this definitely mean that it is too late for me to replace it with an LG....or is there something else I am supposed to say?

I talked to Dell and they said that they would not be able to replace my screen unless I paid for it.
