Wow, that picture looks great. Looks like a good screen. Nice and crisp.

The Samsung screen is nothing like that. Looking really close at the samsung and you can see little dots that cover and seem to diffuse the light so it's hard to see individual pixels.

I just got of the phone with XPS tech support (and various other sections of the Dell support phone service) and they all said something like:

"There is no current policy about free swapping of screens. Besides, it would be an extra 130 dollars for a tech to come in house"

    and

"You have had the system for too long. That would only be possible if it was brand new. You have had it for over a month"

I did purchase a three year warranty....with in house service

What department am I supposed to speak with? Clearly I said the wrong thing as others on this site have gotten an LG screen sent to them for free.

:D Heheh, that's pretty funny! It's also good to know that someone likes the Chinese screen, too. I think others have reported problems with that one as well, though not nearly as bad as the Samsungs. Thanks for the good info.

Good luck and do post back with your results so that we can keep our little mini knowledgebase up to date. :)

    It means you're a lucky bugger. :p

The Chungwa screen is what was in my 1st 1530. It was sharp, but had really bad viewing angles, and bad back lighting bleed (both across the top and bottom ofthe screen). This was with the WXGA screen. Then the 2 replacement screens that Dell sent were of lesser quality, being the Samjunks! Anyhow, thats when I said screw it, sent the system back and reordered my now perfect 1530!

As for AUO, I have 1 of there screens in my XPS M1210. Its a really good screen, with some minor back light issues. Who knows how they will fair in the 15.4" screen, and I haven't really seen anyone with a WXGA+ in their 1530 posting anything about it.

As for Dell telling you that they cannot give you a free screen, ask them to send you the hooka pipe that they are all toking on! When you call XPS tech, explain to them that your screen is less than acceptable with being blurry, back light issues, and that you didn't pay x amount for a junk computer with a Dell logo. They should make you go through the diagnostics while still on the phone, then set up the tech call. If they ask why it took you so long to report the problem, just say you have been busy trying to diagnose the problem yourself, and found proof that others have been experiencing this same behavior, then tell them of this site. Reference them to the LG counterpart and ask for that to be sent with the tech. The will give you a bunch of hoopla as that part does not exist or is not compatible, whatever. Just be firm, stay cool, and let it feed through.

Tech just finished. He left 2 small scratches on my beloved laptop, but they are hardly noticeable. The AUO 1280x800 panel is so much better than the Samsung I have that it's taking me a second to adjust to the brightness. Viewing angles while standing at an angle to the screen are pretty horrible, but other than that I'm satisfied. Not too crazy about the scratches though...

LG owns Samsung in LCD's but Samsung owns in Plasma. I know this is true for televisions, I really don't get why a laptop monitor would be that much different.

Just some advice for everyone getting their laptops repaired: DON"T. The tech guy I talked to was very knowledgeable and knew what he was doing. He told me that the screen was meant to be replaced. The plastic coating around the screen is secured in by plastic snaps, not screws like other laptops. Therefore, the bottom part of my laptop, the black strip where the Dell logo is, is pretty loose. I does not snap in and so I returned and just ordered another one. PLEASE GOD just give me an LG. Pray for me guys.

I.. don't think he meant it in terms of Samsung WTFPWNS LG. Believe it or not, the word 'own' actually means to possess or hold as property. The word was actually around before online gaming.

On a serious note, I have no idea who owns who anymore with all the buyouts and mergers and whatnot.

So where is the problem? The 1650 x screen or the 1440 or both?

From what I can gather you can potentially get a problem screen with whichever resolution you get, but you're far more likely to get a good one if you go with the 1440x900.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't find this out until a few days after I ordered the 1280x800.

What does this mean? You said don't get the screen replaced yet it's meant to be able to?? The M1530 Service manual clearly shows its meant to be able to be replaced!

On another note seems maybe DELL has finally caught on?
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=213802

I ordered my M1530 on tuesday with the 1680x1050 screen (i'm in Australia) so hopefully i won't get a dodgy samsung. But even if i do looks like the chances of getting it replaced with an LG may be climbing!! yay!

Delivery date is the 5th so i'll post back here then. Would be nice to see some more success stories here!

My samsung screen is wxga 1200 by 800....is that the one you are all talking about (or are you referring to a different resolution)?

I ask this because although I agree that the screen does not have the best lighting and is grainy, it doesn't seem as bad as some people are saying...maybe my samsung is different??

How bad is it 'supposed' to be in order for it to justify my complaining to dell?

From what I can gather, all resolutions can potentially come with the dreaded grainy screen, though it seems the 1200 and the 1680 ones have a very good potential to get the crappy screen, while the 1440 has an excellent chance of getting a good LG screen. There are reports coming out, however, that Dell is phasing out, or potentially getting rid of the grainy Samsungs altogether.

I would say if you feel like you aren't satisfied with the purchase, then you should ask to get it replaced. Mine is on the way and I'm not very optimistic about getting a non-Samsung, but I'm hoping for the best. I'm not going to send it back just because it happens to be a Samsung. (please, please let it be the LG...) ;)

sorry for seeming like a "newbie" but why is it that some people in this thread are saying that they asked for an LG and Dell said they'd send an LG, while other people are saying that they asked Dell of an LG and Dell said that they could not guarantee a specific screen make....?

also am I supposed to present this to Dell as if "there is a defective problem with my screen?" or am I supposed by say "My screen is grainy, can you send me a new one?"

I'm not speaking from experience, but merely from the knowledge I've gained from these boards.

When dealing with Dell, it is a crapshoot whether you will deal with a good CSR or not, whether they are in a good mood or not, etc. Also, supposedly even if you requested a specific part number (say.. the LG for instance) and the Dell CSR complied and it's confirmed that they ordered that specific part for you, once it gets to the factory or the point where the order is gonna go in the box, if they don't have that exact part number in stock, they will use an "interchangeable" part.

I would definitely try to play dumb and say it's defective in some way, rather than make it sound like it's your personal preference for a brighter, less grainy screen. (seems like a defect to me if there's this many people with screen issues..)

If you make it sound like you want a change due to personal preference they will probably reject the request.

If the request is due to a defect they will more likely comply since that would be a warranty issue.

I am supposed to be getting my screen replaced tomorrow but at this stage have no idea what with. I've looked online but my service call no doesn't seem to have been registered yet. I will cry if it's another crap screen, it will be the 3rd for me (and 2 laptops so far). I sold my trusty Samsung X50 laptop for a 3rd of what I paid for this junk, starting to regret it now. Yes I'm being picky but I paid for a premium product not an entry level budget lappy.

Was that under Hardware Ids or Device Instance Path? Mine says the same in those 2 places and I can tell you it's a Samsung (I did check the part no on Dell, it's not hard to do).

Just a sudgestion to everyone who got a grainy screen. I just called Dell to do a refund of my m1530 and told them that i dont like the screen and dont belive them gona put in the right one on the friday, so them offerd me a ~200$ disscount if i choose to keep the computer, but i stil can refund it on the monday. So call them, complain, and get some money back, so maybe it will not hurt that much to wait for the good lcd panel.

Its still covered under warranty, depends on what sort of warranty your purchased but you will still have at least a 1 year warranty.

So get it replaced under that. Tell them "some of the pixels on the screen show an offset colour giving it a grainy look" or something like that :p

And if that doesn't work, ring up again and change the line you use slightly until it does!

If you've got DELL CompleteCover you may want to contemplate letting your screen have an "accident" and getting it replaced under that too :D

I got my XPS 1530 yesterday and it is the dreaded 3350 grainy screen!! and also their is some backlight bleeding at the bottom of the lccd pannel. Just wanted to know if others have the same problem. I am getting the LCD replaced soon which is again going to be the Samsng screen. Does anyone have good experience with the samsung screen and what is the best way to get it replaced or its best to return the product and ask for replacement .

Cross-posting my reply from another forum as I can't see the point in re-typing much the same words. Had my WXGA screen replaced with an LG panel today, so far so good! Tech was very efficient and had it all done in under 30 mins and everything went back together nicely, no loose bits after he finished was a bonus. He took one look at my screen and said it was dark on one side, no argument.

Haven't had a lot of time to check it all out yet as it was done at work and I was way too busy but it looks OK to me so far. I did get some phone camera pics of the LCD labels for reference, old one was definitely Samsung. The panel supplied was new not refurbished, he mentioned replacement LCDs were always new. It begs the question of what happens with the old ones though?

Had a Samsung WSXGA+ replaced with an LG WSXGA+ today. The LG isn't exceptional by any means - its a good LCD, but compared to the Samsung, it is amazing how much of an improvement there is.

That's interesting, you got an LG WXGA with a different code to mine, mine comes up as LPL0301. There's a pic of the label in this thread (not the best as I'm not used to my new phone's camera yet sorry) - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=211423&page=8.

It's really bright, I had to bump it down a couple of notches last night. Viewing angles are quite good compared to the Samsung WXGA (D/PN RP636) it replaced and nowhere near as bad grain and dark areas. A very small strip of backlight bleed at the bottom of the panel but it's minor.

Just goes to show like others with the Vostro series said, some of there LG's weren't the best, and they had them swapped out to Samsungs. I think its just a matter of which model LG you get. Mine is a LPLDF00, WXGA+, and is beautiful with no backlight bleed, crystal clear, colors are exceptional, and is way to bright on full. Mine is cranked down 2 notches with overhead halogen recess lights.

For some reason, everybody claiming they have a WXSGA+ screen say it is better than Samsung but not exceptional in any means, just a good lcd. Those with a WXGA+ always claim it is exceptional, very bright with super colors. I did receive a WXGA+ screen and it is indeed exceptional. Could the WXGA+ just be of better quality?

Okay guys I finely got the service tech out to my house to replace my POS samsung screen with the LG XK309 and it is unbelievable how much better this screen is! The white is so bright and clear it is just remarkable! I can't even put into words how beautiful this LG screen is. If you have a samsung screen and are wondering if you should get it replaced DO IT AS FAST AS YOU CAN you will not regret it! It is a night and day difference!

Hey all, can you take a full frontal picture of your screen? I know it's not like seeing it live, but I'd like to see the brightness, font size (open up a webpage with some writtings and pictures), like a close pic? If that's ok and doesn't bother you for sure :) Thanks
