we already tried that without luck.
anyway we were lucky we found some app we could take advantage of.
it was able to make BIOS backups, not flasheable anyway.
but it was able to boot by renaming the file to BIOS.cap, also noticed that we could the the same thing by getting a piece of the flasheable BIOS package to act like that.
however both methods were limited.
for example, backup bios was not able to save setup settings. (by entering at the setup pressing F2, modify stuff, and saving stuff, it caused the onboard/bricked bios to take effect in next restart)
that is why is required the temporal BIOS boot a minimal OS and repair the BIOS from there.
since windows 7 cant boot without AHCI mode (well, it can boot with a little registry mod, but you need to start it anyway to mod the registry, so its useless)., usb OS booting didnt worked from the backup bios for some reason.
so the cdrom is the only working system I found to load an OS.
BIOS.cap file (bios backup) can be booted from right usb port (sata+usb port) and dvd-rom drive, I used a cd writable disk
well, you can try also burning the image on a DVD disk, it may works, but it isnt tested. I also preffer to burn a cd since the cdrom image uncompressed is just about 170 mb, even on a cd-rom you waste space ^^, burning a dvd would be not a smart idea I think ^^

Hi !
I have some troubleswith my laptop with the bios A11 for 540m (0.83/0.85). Don't know if it is the bios fault but since I installed it. I have a problem which occurs more and more often : the fan can't start and instead all the laptot is shaking...It seems to be an hardware issue but maybe it isn't... so I d like to know if it happend to someone. I dismounted and cleaned my laptop. I did'nt read all the topic because it is too long!
Thanks you by anticipation! -
@TehCapi
what do you mean exactly with shaking?
do you mean the fan looks semiblocked/capping?
yeah, that looks hardware issues, not bios issues.
I didnt had any hardware issue with the modded bioses, some users said the laptop looks more quiet and cool since the undervolted temps.
are you sure it is modded bios related?
try switching to the original A11 bios again and if posible give feedback.
@all
well, since no 540m user seems to offer feedback for the new recovery method, I will add the system as valid valid, me and other 525m user sucesfully recovered the bioses using this method, so I will add it to the first post anyway ^^ -
Hi capitan,
I tested A11 525m 83/83 and it's awesome!!!
so far with stock and overvolted bioses, i was not able to get stable clocks above 766/984. Now with this hugely undervolted one, i'm getting stable clocks of 780/1080(maximum for memory).. i'm not a hardcore gamer. how i test is using furmark and occt gpu. and some racing games. sofar so good.
.
-
can also agree with dhaneshbc the overclocking ability is far greater on the 0.83,0.83 vs any of the other voltages i was able to run my laptop at 802/900 stable on all games and with a highest temperature of only 76 while doing so all in all its a great bios cant wait for your a12 version of the bios with hopefully the added cpu support aswell great work again capitankasar
-
nice find guys
I was using 85/85, but I think I will also switch to 83/83 to test if I can go further with my current stable OC (704/900)
about the v4 version it is almost there.
for the moment it will include CPU microcode update to 0x28 version (stock version is 0x23) and also intel ME update. to version 7.1.52.1176 (you can check your current ME version by going to the BIOS unlocked menus and going to the ME menu.)
there will be two intependent updates, intel ME firmware update, and BIOS update.
edit: ok
before relase the complete package I would like to test just the ME update.
let me know if it update without issues for you or it ask for drivers or some stuff.
INTEL ME BETA UPDATE -
@ capitankasar tested the me update and everything went automaticaly.
Good -
thanks wendiko
can you confirm you are running the updated version of me by checking the IntelME version?
you should find it here
I will start relasing the v4 versions of the A12 today
they will include all the previus mods plus the cpu microcode update to 0x28 version.
however the ME update will be outside the package, since the ME firmware is not part of the BIOS update. -
hi capitankasar i ran the intel ME firmware update you provided and it was successful and the version number changed in the bios like your picture shows hope this helps, and if you want me to test any other things 1st before you go public with it id be glad to help
-
thanks daryld
then aparently the ME firmware update works fine, I will add the ME update to the first post soon
well, the BIOS recovery method still pending for 540m users, I'm almost sure it will work anyway but it would be nice if someone could try it.
anyway since we both own a gt525m we cant test it ^^ -
ok, here are the first v4 modded versions of a12 bios ^^
it include new A12 bios feature + all v3 modded features + CPU microcode update, ME firmware update is also avalible, but since it is another firmware independent from the BIOS it will be on another download
A12 525m 83 83 v4
L502X_A12_525m_83_83_Unlocked_Menus_v4.rar
and
A12 525m 85 85 v4
L502X_A12_525m_85_85_Unlocked_Menus_v4.rar
will add them to the first post in a few minutes, I will also add the ME firmware update.
if you want modded A12 v4 versions with other voltage settings, just let me to know -
[Off topic]
Do you know where I could buy a fan for my laptop?
I did't remember the reference.
[/Off topic] -
mmm, then probably the problem isnt modded bios related.
about the fan replacement
I think I posted something related here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...5-r2-l502x-owners-lounge-347.html#post8492774
instructions to replace it:
Documentation
let us to know if it fixes your problem -
Thanks! -
well, I heard from many user that the 0.83/0.85 version works great for them, improved OC and also fixed crashes in many cases.
I will relase a 540m 0.83/0.85 version v4 for A12 version ^^
oh, since I can see you have a 540m I may ask you for a favor while I work on your version
can you test the bios recovery method from the first post?
it worked fine for gt525m users, but need confirmation from at least a 540m user ^^
thanks -
@capitansakar running GT525m A12 083/083 everything is perfect.
Thanks for the hard work. -
@wendiko
pleased you liked it ^^, and many thanks for the feedback
added you at the first post ^_^
@fauzulkc
just uploaded the modded bios, you can find it at the first post, if posible leave feedback, and if you also can test the bios recovery feature, it would be awesome
@all
to ensure you have the latest CPU microcodes running you can install XTU and check this ^^
0x23 on stock bios
0x28 on my v4 bioses -
all we need now is someone with an ivy bridge processor to test it now and see if it works would be awesome if it did would be even less reason to upgrade 2 the new xps 15 l512x
-
well, even I updated the microcode update, I highly doubt about the ivy bridge will work with the current bios mod.
I has been able to update the microcode for the currently supported proccesors,this probably improve current CPUs fiability it may add some other sandy bridge proccesors support, but even the ivy bridge cpu were also added (I has been unable yet), it would also need to update the ME firmware to version 8.x.x, and I was unable to do it yet, I has been only to update to newer 7.x.x firmwares
also it would be needed to add the intel HD4000 vbios, (sandy bridge proccesors use HD3000 vbios), and since I dont know how to add extra modules, I may have to replace current vbios module, thay may remove support for the current sandy bridge proccesors to add ivy bridge support, well I didnt gave up yet about the ivy bridge cpus at the l502x, however it isnt an easy weekend project wich can be done in two days ^^
prema contacted with me today, he said he is also working to add ivy bridge support on older chipsets, hopefully we will be able to have sucess -
yea i know what your saying there definately would be alot of work needed aswell but the 1st breakthrough has been made thanks to you, hopefully it will lead to something though as i think the graphics card thats built into the new intel processors may even be powerfuller than the nvidia cards thats in our laptops at,
-
yeah, a lot of work is still pending, I also have to admit this project eat a lot of my free time hehe ^^
well, as for the hd4000 graphics vs the dedicated graphics, a non OCed 540m still better than the hd4000 graphics, and this entore topic showed the extra performance gained by voltage tweaking + OC to our 525m and 540m cards, so our dedicated GPUs will still being better than the improved hd4000 graphics from the ivy bridge cpus ^^
here you have a comparision I found
source:
HD Graphics 4000 Vs GT 540M : Notebook Graphics
also check this one ^^
http://compare-processors.com/rank/...+540M=on&Intel+HD+Graphics+4000=on&cp=Compare -
i definately wouldnt of thought that woulda been the results from the graphics just shows our wee systems r capable of alot more than we think
and yes mate im sure it is very time consuming but just know that your work is much appreciated with you mods so far youve saved alot of us spending money on pointless upgrades thus far so please keep up the good work mate and anything i can do to help just ask
-
I got motivation to keep working on this came while I noticed one of my mods made people happy and interested on my work ^^ -
just installed the a12 0.83,0.83 bios there mate great job also noticed that it installed my processor drivers once windows loaded i take it this has something to do with the microcode being changed great job as usual mate thank you
-
thanks ^^
oh, I didnt noticed about it installed new drivers on windows, since I had to restart many times while testing stuff, I may missed that ^^
added to the first post -
Let's see when i can! -
And I loved the whole procedure!
Great Work Capitan. -
I tested A12 advanced menu enablef bios for GT540M. It is ok. I haven't encountered any problem
Also can you please make a defalut voltaged A12 bios for GT540m with advanced menus ? -
I also tested the A12 advanced menu for 540m. It works fine.
thanks you. -
@fauzulkc
huge thanks!
thanks to you, now we all know l502x users can sucesfully recover the machine in case of bad flash
the recovery method flash the original a06 and like all bios updates, it also clear bios settings, if you didint, you will need to download and flash again a modded version and config setup settings again, the last version you requested is at the first post
@Intpv6
done ^^
generic (non voltage modded) version of a12 bios avalible for 525m and 540m can be found at the first post
@TehCapi
thanks
added to the first post ^^ -
Yes! I did the recovery, checked it. And then instantly flashed it with the A12 540m modded bios which you provided. Forget to mention that.
A12 in 540m 83/85 is working fine. But i don't see much of an improvement in OC though.
540m users with A12 83/85, could you all please give your max OC settings in which you are able to run games and benchmarks without crash.
Currently i am using DiRT 3 benchmark tool at Ultra Settings and 2xMSAA.
I will provide info about fps later on.
@capitan.
Any luck on processor overclocking? -
Getting an avg. fps of 22.82 and lowest of 20.60 fps.
-
well, even having the same chip , GPU, every chip run different, so it can be great to OC for some users, and for others it can be just OK.
it you want to max out your GPU performance, I recomend to test different voltage settings for your gpu, then check what is the one wich allow higher clocks without crashing.
if there is any bios with custom voltage settings not present at the first topic, just let me know and I will update them so you and other users can download and run it
and nope D:, I didnt had any luck with CPU overclocking yet, that seems to involve ME firmware modding and that is a complete new subject for me, keep in mind we have a BIOS recovery method for the l502x, but we dont have a ME firmware recovery method in case things goes wrong with modded ME FW flashing.
I will keep investigating anyway ^^
since I started working at those mods, I suposed my laptop would end fully unlocked or fully bricked
lets see wich one I archive -
i have tested the new v4 biosmod gt540m 0,83-0,85 without any problems. when I play, I overclock my gpu at 800mhz/950mhz and it's rock-solid and it's about 80°C. good job, capitankasar.
-
tested A12 v4 with default voltages. Works just fine!
Also, my default voltages for my 525m seem to be 85 98 according to gpu-z. Not sure what they were before the A12 update, but isn't 85 95 supposed to be the default?
--Adeeb -
@francy.1095
thanks for the feedback
* added to the first post ^^
do the fast string setting + the updated cpu microcode improve the cpu score at the windows evaluation score over the stock bios?
some users said it got improved, but I didnt noticed any difference with my i3-2310m
edit:
@adeebm
thanks for reporting!
added to the first post too ^_^ -
o! mine had a 0.1 increment in processor and ram each.
processor from 6.9 to 7.0
ram from 7.3 to 7.4. -
@fauzulkc
thanks for the info
what is your, proccesor and ram?
someone said it went like two entire points, I think there should be some kind of confusion there, because two points is too much!
probably will be some mistake like he had turboboost off or something before, but well, is a fact that fast strings improve things at least a little ^^
also running updated cpu microcode is usually good -
But really, I didn't touch anything other than enable fast strings and quick boot. Well, maybe it could be due to something I was unaware of.
@capitankasar, what exactly does the microcode and Intel ME do? I tried looking them up but could not understand a single thing
Thanks!
Sent from my LG-P509 -
yeah
I was talking about u hehe ^^
the microcode fixes some proccesor bugs and sometimes improve the performance, very rare anyway, the ME update firmware have to do chpset stuff, it fixes stuff and some things
as for the moment I was able to update it only, but if I am able to hack the ME firmware , probably OC will be posible ^^ -
-
unlocking the BCLK tweaking will let OC our machines, very litle anyway, but well, every extra Mhz tastes good -
Processor: Intel Core i5 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz Turbo Boost to 3.10Ghz
Ram: 6GB 1333MHz.
Dedicated Graphics Processor: 2GB Nvidia GT540m.
1TB HDD 5400rpm. -
@Capitan
Got a problem here mate. A12 83/85 540m. Overheating even at idle state. upto 86 degrees Celcius. Processor also overheating making the whole laptop almost burn skin if nearby. Processor is at 86-94 degrees Celcius.
Could You give me the best possible bios setup for each and every options. which should be turned on, which not. There are a lot lot lot of stuffs which I am unknown of.
Please provide a large post with all infos. That would be great.
And is there any way i could customize the fan speed manually!
Thank you! -
-
@fauzulkc
mmm, check the voltage with HWmonitor at that bios.
about the BIOS options, I enabled fast strings, diagnosis screen (the first option), uefi boot, tweaked some hdd and memory options, everything else is on default on my machine.
do overheating happened with previous undervolted bioses?
thats very strange, but I'm almost sure I did set the correct settings for each uploaded BIOS
-
few screen shots would be good! Specially with the Processor, HDD, and Ram
-
hehe, have too many firefox tab and stuff at this moment, too lazy to restart the system rightnow and take the camera
well, at the proccesor, I just enabled fast strings.
ram, I set manually the frecuency to 1333 to be sure, nothing else.
and about the HDD, i went to the second hdd I installed (by removing phisically the optical drive and installing a hdd caddy), and at the second sata menu I also set "partial mode"
like the first one, also the hdd have another sub menu with something like led mode, and link agresive mode, enabled both.
system running good at the moment -
I tested the recovery method for the GT540M model, and yep, it works! (as hoped
)
And as you mentioned on your first post, it won't load unless the CD drive is replaced back into the laptop.
I'm also now running the A12 .85v modded BIOS
As everyone has been saying, we all appreciate the work that you and the others at BIOS-mods have put in to this project!! - Thanks again. -
I'm using A11 85v for GT540m and have 90% less freezes - awsome!
I have one request. Is it possible to make a bios version with F1-F6 functions working with Fn key but F8-F12 functions working without pressing it?
Just to make it half/half
It would be great.
Keep up the good work!
