    you are correct, uefi cant be disabled with stock bios because it is already disabled.
    the stock bios is almost like the unlocked one, except you obviously cant modify some features/values due the lock.

    so dont worry about disable uefi, it is allways disabled at the L502X except you manually enable it at the modded bios on purpose.

    I suspect you installed windows in UEFI mode or using newer OS than win7 , dont know wich is the cause, anyway looks like dell dont relase updates for this laptop anymore.

    i was about to edit my message when i received your answer ^^

    It won't actually work. Apparently Factory Restore Images are tattooed with the hard drive that came with in the laptop. So either way, im screwed as im using a Kingston SSD HyperX Savage and not a mechanic hard drive.

    So if Dell doesn't find a solution, im thinking of doing a new clean Win7 install with a proper driver order guide and pray for it to work !

    You can safely reinstall OS from clean install disk. I've done it many times, both in Legacy and UEFI modes.
    QuickSet won't work in UEFI - installation will crash or even notebook will stop responding.
    But this program isn't very useful. You can check http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...voltages-and-more.635536/page-213#post9307506
    if you only want key binding. As long as you don't have keyboard lit it shouldn't be an issue.

    Thx agalin for your reply.

    - I've actually reinstalled Win7 friday.
    - I installed drivers following this order guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...x-owners-lounge.564192/page-422#post-10012715 . At step 20 it says to install Quickset, but it didn't work ...
    - I did windows updates (209 updates :/)

    I read your post and if i understood well, i need to install AutoHotkey, use your config file in order to use Dell's hotkeys. Thx a lot this will help :)

    But there are two other issues i need to fix, as they are for me, the most important ones :
    - Fn+F2 shortcut (wifi switch) freezes my pc.
    - Dells mobility center. Stop battery from charging ! (backlit works well and i don't bother having it on all the times)

    It look likes there is no third party battery management software available (did some researchs) and Quickset just doesn't work, so what to do ?

    Fn+F2 freezes system at every moment (even on boot time) always. Only Linux didn't crash for me (don't know how).
    It''s impossible in UEFI mode to install ANY element of QuickSet (tried unpacking it...) or I just haven't found any way to do it.

    The thing is, according to Dell : A12 bios is installed without UEFI, so why can't i install Quickset ?
    I also bet that if i buy a mechanical HD and use recovery partition, all will work properly ! The problem is i can't use Recovery partition for my SSD !

    This is making me crazy. i don't understand how a simple soft like Quickset can't be installed easily ...
    I actually stoped from trying to install it. it's been a week i had this new SSD and i installed Win7 three times hoping Quickset will work. Dell bios, Capitan bios, driver guide ... i tried so many things and none of them worked. I have just to use my laptop without Quickset !

    Sadly I can't help with that. It should install without problems on Win7 in Legacy mode. I've been using SSD for a long time and never have seen any problems with it.

    Interesting. Just have found that Fn+F3 disables my touchpad on driver version 19.0.15.2.09Jul15 (from Synaptics website) - it's first time it has happened since I've ended using Dell version ~2 years ago. So for now only Fn+F2 is not working on Win10 in UEFI mode on my machine. :)

    Hi,

    I flashed 0.83V/0.85V advanced menu bios for GT540M.
    but the menu item "change service tag" doesn't appear on the "Security" tab so I can't set my service tag.

    Thanks.

    Any noticeable impact? (changelog reports various improvements, wondering if it's worth it, apparently can't be undone, haven't checked yet to see if my l502X HW is supported)

    Hi capitankasar, I flashing the intel ME version 7.1.52.1176 in the first page you posted. However I have faced a serious issue about the flashing th IME (it stuck at "sending the update image to FW for verification : 43%) and it won't go further. The laptop now is still on and Im not dare to shut it down because if I shutdown it will consider a bad flash and it is not recoverable.

    Please advise what should I do now? Can I exit the process and re-flash the with the same (intel ME version 7.1.52.1176) again? Or should I exit the current flash process and straight re-flash the 7.1.60.1193 instead without shut down my laptop? The link for the 7.1.60.1193 seem not working. Please help me.

    For your information, the laptop now is currently still on and waiting for your advise.

    Spec for my L502X
    Bios: A12 with unlocked advance menu by you
    Processor: 2920XM
    GC: GT540
    Original Intel ME FW: 7.0.4.1197.

    It has freezed in verification phase, so it's probably secure to turn off the notebook, as flash phase isn't started yet.

    Thank you for your advise, I have turned it off (shutdown) just now and restart again. I realise that it has changed nothing to the firmware and I can start up my laptop normally. You are right!!

    There are no "required" things to change in BIOS. What exactly do you want to achieve?

    There's no magic option that will make your notebook ultra fast. But you can achieve small speed bump by enabling Fast Strings option.

    Works for me:
    Rufus -> GPT (UEFI only) -> FAT32 from ISO image.
    There is a chance that on EFI partition is stored crash log from bluescreen. Also do you have disabled legacy boot?

    ALPM mode. Currently set (as default) to partial. Had some problems with my ssd when not disabled. ALPM = Aggressive Link Power Management.
    Also doesn't blue screen display any error message just before restarting?

    In first post there is information that no update package for default version of Intel ME is available. But why no info about -save option of FWUpdLcl? It creates proper update package for currently running version (just checked that when I run 7.1.52.1176 it saves file exactly the same as downloaded from first post). So if anybody has still original FW, can save and upload it there.
    Other problem is blacklist entry in that version:
    Firmware Update CANNOT be performed for the following:
    Version Less than of Equal to 7.0.10.1203
    so it's still probably not possible to downgrade.

    Also 7.1.80.1214 seems to work properly.

    Hi Capitan,

    I come back to you for news.
    Recently i had BSOD with that well known error nvlddmkm.sys :/
    This was the last problem i wanted to deal with this laptop i had for the past 5 years. So before buying a new one in 2016, i decided to have a full overview of this laptop.

    I completely dissembled the beast part by part. Cleaning, checking, fixing each piece of hardware. When i removed the cooling bars, i could hardly see the (blue) thermal paste and it was as dry as clay. I put new paste on. Reassemble every single cleaned part. Used Dells OS dvd install. i followed this guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...x-owners-lounge.564192/page-422#post-10012715 to reinstall drivers. I managed to get Dell quickset to work :) ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ltages-and-more.635536/page-341#post-10097568).

    After all the pain i had making this laptop to work properly, i finally see the end of the tunnel ^^. Im using your modded bios with the fast strings, quick boot and 1600 memory and it runs like a cheetah in the Savannah ! Always believe in thermal paste as a solution of your graphic card issues ;)
    Now my L502x is neat and working perfectly ^^

    I will definitly buy a genuine Dell 150w power supply to run of factory clock. Yes even if all my problems are solved, the main one is still not using the graphic card at its full potential ! MSI Afterburner makes a good job while im ordering the new power supply !

    Thx again for your time and the work you put into this laptop.

    Greetings everyone - I've been battling the L1502x lockup issue for months now, I've reflashed the bios with the modded version: L502X_A12_525m_83_83_Unlocked_Menus_v6 (many thanks for all the hard work on this).
    Machine still locks up during gaming activity especially with League of Legends in under an hour of play time. I'm wondering if I can lower the temperature by dropping the voltage down a notch or two or the clock speed?
    Also, if I were to twittle with the voltage or clock, where in the modded bios do I find this or is there software that let's me do this from with in Win7 without bios options being changed?
    Thank you everyone for any help,

    I had to create an account here first of all to THANKS capitankasar and EVERYBODY who posted here givind rich informations on dealign with this problematic hardware.

    THIS IS what I did to manage the problems almost everyone had/have:
    --- cleaned ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING and applied thermal paste;
    --- installed BIOS 540M 0.83v/0.85v Advanced Menus v6 (link on first page);
    --- my Windows doesn't have AHCI configured, so I had to set SATA mode to ATA as it was with original BIOS;

    Edit 29/05/2014: just changed to AHCI Mode following THIS TUTORIAL and everything went OK.
    --- Under Advanced > Processor menu, enabled Fast Strings;
    --- Under Advanced > Processor > Power menu, HAD to disable Turbo Boost;
    --- Under Memory menu, fixed clock to 1333 MHz just in case.
    --- installed Intel ME version 7.1.80.1214 ( link);
    --- On Advanced Options for Power under Control Panel, I set the Maximum processor usage to 98%;
    --- with THIS PROCEDURE (thanks, man, this was MAGICAL), I open the RW software and start anything that makes the cooler work, than I set the 0x60 value to 00 (meaning: manual control) and this forces it to work ALWAYS at the same speed (I believe it's about 3000rpm) and close RW (to avoid lag). This MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE, I can do normal tasks and processor stays at 50° C when normally would be at 70° C. YES, IT'S POSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE FAN SPEED, IT'S NEITHER EASY NOR COMFORTABLE, BUT IS DOABLE!

    If I set the value to 02, it works ALWAYS at full speed (first page post of capitankasar explains this). I use this only for a few minutes when encoding video.

    I prefer this method over SpeedFan because with it it's possible to achieve ~5300rpm and with SpeedFan even setting to 100% it will consider Dell's 100% which is ~4300rpm.
    Edit 31/05/2016: I wrote THIS SIMPLE TUTORIAL about using SpeedFan on Dell XPS 502 ~ L502X.
    --- I don't have to underclock the GPU anymore, undervolting (installing the modded bios) and keeping the fan working evertime (~3000rpm for normal tasks and ~5300rpm for heavy tasks) did the trick.

    I "jumped" from the original Intel ME (7.0.something) to 7.1.80.1214 and NOTICED BIG DIFFERENCES (for better) on speed/heat.

    In your case, it's a "small jump" and I believe if you're not having issues, leave it alone.

    I "developed" this simple program (.BAT) to manage Dell XPS 502 Fan:

    [IMG]

    Basically I turn on the notebook, open it and HWMonitor to follow CPU temperature ( this is important), choose option 4 ( it runs consume.exe from Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools, I didn't even install all the Kit, just extracted consume.exe from it and copied to system32 and SysWOW64 folders) to make the fan spin, when it's spinning in a desirable speed ( CPU temperature above 68°C) I choose option 2 ( it kills consume.exe and set 0x60 value in RW to 00) and DONE!

    If I'm going to play or run a heavy task, I open it, choose option 1 and DONE! When I'm finished, just open it, choose option 4 until CPU temperature reaches 68°C and then 2 (like mentioned above).

    It can be used on another notebooks SINCE the .RW files are modified and adapted to its model.

    This works FLAWLESSLY for L502X. I was really tired of running applications to force the fan to spin and changing values in RW Everything.

    If anyone's interested, post a message here and I'll upload it.
