L502X modded bioses download (GPU voltages and more!)

Intel just released microcode 0x2D for Sandy Bridge for OEMs. @ Thiblizz can you please insert that microcode into your modded BIOS as soon as it available for download?

 

i can do it.......but i'm new of the forum, so give me the link of the bios to be updated, i have xps17 but i think the procedure it's the same

 

Do you already have access to the new microcode 0x2D? I do not find it in the Intel download center yet.
The BIOS I would like to see upgraded is in this file, filename B_UNDERV.WPH.

Thanks, I can confirm that this microcode is working on the L502x Notebook. Checked with AIDA64 and inSpectre.

You can flash Thiblizz' modded BIOS directly over the already flashed Mod-BIOS.

No, that is not possible due to the fact that the monitor is connected to the Intel-GPU.

I would recommend to leave everything at default values but additionally enable Fast Strings to get a slightly improved CPU performance.

 

I understand! But do you have idea if is possible use 540m with firefox? Because if I select my gpu to use mozilla firefox trough the "nvidia control panel", after checking in firefox on about:support, give me the result that only the intel gpu is active.

It seems that this is a common problem of Firefox. Here is bug report in Mozilla's bugtracker but no solution however.

Can anyone tell me the model number of the full hd screen? This one came with the 1366x768 display.

Some say the full hd version won't work in this laptop and some say it just needs a different ribbon.

Guys, can you help me please? I'm thinking on replacing my 525m mobo for a 540m mobo, do you know if it will be compatible? Also, I have 6GB of RAM and a I want to replace the 2GB one for a 4GB. Do you know if it's ok to put one with a different brand? It would be a DDR3 1333MHz, the same frequency of the ones installed.

Just pay attention to select the same ddr3 modules, otherwise you wil loose dual channel! After the installation write here and i will guide you to update microcodes in your bios

 

Hey Dexter1983, thanks for your reply! You're talking about the memory replacement, right? I bought the module online and I'm waiting to be delivered (It might take a while). But what about the mobo replacement? The thing is, the 540m version is very hard to find and they're not cheap. I'm having thoughts to replace the 525m mobo for another 525m mobo (because of the video freezing, my underclock is already very low), but apparently there are some part numbers that I must pay attention to and I just don't know if a different number will be compatible.

 

Well I'm kinda stuck here. I had flashed the modded bios before but that was around 1 year back. I installed Windows 10 and now when I try to boot into bios setup it's just a black screen and nothing else.

I'm also unable to flash a modded bios again as it just ends up in a blue screen stating PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGED AREA, caused by WinFlash64.sys failing.

Anyone knows how to get around this?

 

Guy's I can't believe.. I've been following this thread since a few years, trying different solutions for the freezing in games problem.. and finally I found one that doesn't involve underclocking!

The second step is crucial! I don't know why exactly this drivers.. but it works!!
Yes.. I coulnd't believe it either I would find a solution after so many years on playing just on the battery (on AC freezed immediately). It works since a week for now so I thought I'd share this with you guys..

Im also facing this problem,i cant acces the bios anymore or even flash one...one more thing i notice its that if i try tu use the F2 wireless shortcut it will freeze the laptop, also it freezes when i try to install the Quickset drivers...i can acces the bootmenu but i still can see old ubuntu/deepin installations there and im pretty sure i format my entire ssd before installing windows 10 back again, when trying to acces the bios via the boot menu it just freezes out too. Spec i5 2450m gt525m bios .83 ... i havent try to take out the motherboard battery to see if that fix things up i will update when i have time to open up the laptop

 

Does anyone know the difference between this mod and the one found here? Also the link to the 7.1.60 ME firmware from SwooshyCueb is broken and do I need to do all that manual stuff for the OC hack or can I just use the modded firmware provided here?

 

See if that keeps working for you after a few weeks, I found on my L502X that I had to underclock more every few months. That machine is the sole reason I stopped buying anything with a BGA GPU.

 

I see now so Thiblizz is the latest version. Anyone know where I can obtain the 7.1.80 Managment Engine from carcrab and if the OC hack works with it? A wayback link is here but actual file isn't saved.

Hey all, I found this thread for the first time after years trying to find fixes for gaming in this laptop. But everything I tried didnt work like underclocking (nothing works, MSI Afterburner, Nvidia system stuff, im going to try nvidia inspector), putting thermal paste, nvidia drivers (they legit dont want to install and I dont know why). Also this laptop doesnt work without the power cable on it. My laptop got the Geforce 540m and it has windows 10 it works fine except gaming.
But im kinda afraid to try this bio stuff, on the first page its messy and photos dont work, a lot of downloads that I dont know which to install. And this thread is enormous and old.
Can anyone give a updated tutorial for this? This would be a HUGE help for anyone in the future that finds this thread and got problems and is troubleshooting, like me.

I was able to take SO MUCH out of this thread its so great so i want
to give some INSIDER INFO back now! Just some things i found out
which could make a BIG difference for YOU as a L502x owner!

Why is nobody talking about this Laptop anymore ?
Maybe because its getting old ? I dont know about you but i still love my DELL XPS15 L502X!
Its a beautiful piece of high tech with absolut wonderful subwoofer sound from JBL and
with some tuning tho the MAX its works perfectly in 2019!

Today my lady got a new processor, the best possible 2860QM Quad Core 2,5 GHZ (got it for 100 bucks & used from china)
The Extreme Edition i dont want to use because it has 55W. I used the Arctic MX-4 2019 Edition paste,
which is actually better than metal thermal conductive paste!!!

My other specs are:
2860QM Quad Core 2,5 GHZ
16GB 1666Mhz Samsung Ram
1TB Samsung SSD
5TB Seagate Barracuda in the caddy slot.
I also installed the full HD Display
AND i got the best battery pack available.
I also installed the Cooling for the VRECS pics below!

I can work for hours without power cable! My L502x stands a little bit above the ground but thats also good for cooling purposes!

Clearly the weakest part is....
...the graphics card, no discussion here....To fix this i decided to get a NICE EGPU Setup with THE BEAST! I dont use the WLAN slot but the WWAN which
works PERFECT! So i can play over the internet without LAN Kabel!

I use this Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 SC - and some nice additional overclocking! (its stock overclocked)
I flashes the newest BIOS from Captain AFTER i installed the EGPU-Setup from Nando with the A11 BIOS. As i flashed it AFTER i installed the EGPU it works
PERFECTLY together! Try it, it works if you use EGPU with the L502x! Captains BIOS is so great. The temps are now lower and it just WORKS perfect.

I get some nice points in Firestrike even with the internal display! I can play all games if i want to.
I can render my video stuff in NO TIME and i even have enough RAM for all i want.
My 5TB Caddy- HDD is enough storage for TONS of stuff and my 1TB SSD makes this old boy from 2011 superfast!

I LOVE MY L502X AND I WILL NOT BUY A NEW LAPTOP THE NEXT YEARS! WHY SHOULD I ?

So apparently all the XPS have voltage problems? This could create a big lawsuit against Dell tbh. Just like nintendo with the joycons.

 

Not really voltage problems... but yeah without undervolting it can get hot if you use the wrong paste! Not so with a good paste like grizzle kryonaut or even better conductonaut...

Did anybody notice how durable these old L502x and L702x are ?
I use them since 2011 everyday, that's 8 years which is GREAT for a Laptop
and they RUN and RUN!

If you compare it with new machines, many people say that the quality
of dell had gone down dramatically the last years. So i'm happy to use
my old L502x and L702x with some replacement mainboards in case in some years
they will get broke.

I dont need new CPU, because we are at the physical end of CPUs right now with
7nm. Also i dont need more RAM than 32GB and 3DNAND with samsungs SSD
is enough speed. They made a test than in real world application there is no difference
in the experience only of you transfer large files.

I think those old sandy bridge are the perfect sweetspot between performance and durability
These new 7nm (!!) CPUS will not work than long and as soon as other people find out
those old sandy bridge CPUS will get more costly!

What do YOU think ?

 

You are right. The only problem this device has is its Nvidia graphics card. Have to undervolt for it to work now.

Do you mind giving up an updated bios file with the latest specture thing + intel vbios + Intel ME etc?

Yes shure, but undervolting is no problem with the modded bios, or is it ?
Also you can just use an external graphics card on the WWAN Port! Can recommend it not enough. Works perfectly and you can play the newest games with it or other 3D Stuff.
The Graphics cards is clearly the weakest part on our old L502x especially if you upgrade to the most powerfull CPU with 45W the 2860QM, 16GB RAM and a nice SAMSUNG 850 Pro SSD.
I get 80% performance off of my EVGA GTX1060 SC with the EXP GDC 8.0 and an external screen.
So i use both screens. My internal for light work like text, video etc. and my big screen for Photoshop, 3D Applications, Premiere Pro, and WII & WII U Emulators.

I am going to repaste the laptop.

I noticed the small green thermal pad is broken. Can you suggest a replacement? What size and thickness?

Do I apply the thermal paste as a dot or completely cover the cpu and gpu?

Thats not really has a function as a thermal pad in that configuration.
It may be one, though. iIts more a placeholder.
I dont really know where to get a replacement but i think
you CAN just use thermal pads as replacement. I would just meassure the
existing pads with propper meassurement-tool.
