One more problem. After restoring the laptop 2 times for different problems I have another problem envolving the videocard. Before restoring the laptop for the first time I was playing Bioshock 2 and it was running well (albeit underclocked so it doesnt freeze) and after restoring for the first time it was still running fine until I restored for the 2 time.

What happened is that Bioshock 2 is detecting that the videocard is running lower than the minimum system requirements. I dont know how this happened and I would like help trying to find what the hell is making this happen.

I already tried 3 different drivers. The last updated one, the 344.75 that the guy said it stopped the freeze (it didnt) and another one that windows update installed.

I want to find another driver that I had before the restores, it was 369.09. Im trying to find where the hell did I get this update and how it installed on the laptop because im not finding anywhere on the internet and the only ones I find is not compatible with geforce 540m.

Also another problem that I have is MSI Afterburner only working under 265 and sometimes 100 core clock (the slider doesnt go to the default core clock). The default core clock is not even working and I have no idea why this isnt working. It just locks in 50 core clock.

And I found the cause for the audio crackling problem. Its because of my faster internet. Don't have any idea how to fix it tho. Already tried Latencymon.

Hey guys (and girls maybe ? :D)
I now have the problem that my L502x sometimes doesnt boot up.
Instead it just stays black screen and the fan goes to maximum and stays there.
Any ideas on what i can do ? It already tried to change the RAM, but still...
Maybe its one of the two ram slots... ?

    Maybe CMOS Reset helps ?
    Any more ideas ?

    Found the cause:
It was the keyboard cable. a little bit metal
on the flat cable was bend to the next one at
the area where you put it on the cable holder....
Little things can have big impact ;)

I just wanted to change the display and you know what i forgot ?
I forgot to unplug the Power.... No one L502x doesnt turn on at all
and the other one the display didnt work.
After backing both motherboard on the oven with 200C° 8 Minutes
the display works again. The dead L502x doesnt work still....
The one which is working again the soundcard seems to got broken also... :(

    Hey All!
I'm gonna try to give another chance to my beloved L502x. I want to OC so I'm gonna get an XM cprocessor or at least a 2860qm. gpu has been disabled for a while now, I've been running an external one, so I believe I have some more room for overclocking (thats why I want XM edition). I also have 8gb 1600mhz ram I hope to use it.

    3 questions:
-if I use an extreme processor do I need the hardware mod anyway?
-XM cpus need the firmware update??
-there is a Intel ME 7 5MB Firmware v7.1.92.3273, probably needs OC patch?

I will try this last attempt to revive an old friend, please be kind and support me.

    Long live l502x!

Hi, I've a Dell XPS 15 L502X. I'm very happy to have one of this faboulus pc. I've brought it in 2011 and use it every day until now.
I want to update it, ssd, ram, cpu and I think to create a battery modded buying some special cells by panasonic.
Mine pc have this cpu [Intel Core i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz Sandy Bridge 35w] What is the best ram possible for this? sodimm ddr3 1600mhz 2x8gb? Or I can use 1866mhz? If I upgrade my cpu, ram maximum for speed and freq is the same?
I have unlocked bios by Thiblizz.

Do you guys think that going back to windows 7 is better? So many problems appeared because of windows 10 but it has been sooo long since I used windows 7 that I dont know.
Also does the dvd tray work anymore for you guys? Tried to test it today but the laptop didnt read it and the dvd came back with scratches.

I found this on Github: https://github.com/mobilexp/l502x-modded-bios
I suspect he changed his github username or didn't like that Microsoft took Github over.

    Hi,
i am new here and tried to find a way to contact the great programmers.
I am looking for the latest modded BIOS for the L502x with M540 graphic.
For me gaming isn´t important at all. I´m only looking for the mod with extented settings and resistant against Spectre and Meltdown.
Can somebody provide the latest BIOS?
I read about Intel ME Firmware - and found Intel ME Firmware v7.1.80.1214 (1.5MB) and Intel ME Firmware v8.1.70.1590 (1.5MB) - but i have no idea if this helps somehow or how to handle it.
My both machines now run under Win10 64 (AHCI) and have BIOS A12.

    Greetings from germany
    Werner

There are like 6 different variants of the BIOS. You'll have to read through the thread to find which version is best for you. The different variants are based on what hardware you have installed.

I am looking for the extended stock BIOS including the latest Intel ME Firmware for the L502x with M540 graphic.
Which one is best to use and where can i get it?
I saw Dexter1983 updates Thiblizz´s BIOS with Intel ME 2f-version - but can´t find any download for that.
Which is better - Capitankasar´s BIOS or Thiblizz´s ? As far as i understand Thiblizz´s base on Capitankasar´s, right?
If it is Capitankasar´s BIOS i would like the "Non voltage moded A12 bios mod with advanced menus for L502X".
Can somebody explain how to add the latest Intel ME into the BIOS?

Many thanks to Capitan Kasar, your custom bios stabilised my newly purchased Dell XPS 15 L502X i7-2670QM GT540M. I was not able to start most of my favourite old driving games, and the system was freezing in the rest that I was able to start.
I already own a Dell XPS 17 L702X with same configuration (GT550M video card) and I've never encountered any of the above problems.

Apart from expressing my gratitude, I am posting as I have found it very difficult at the end of 2020 to find the files, given the age of the post with most links not working anymore. Starting with the modified bios file, the Intel ME Firmware file and the correct fwupdlcl (that is the Intel Management Engine Firmware Update Utility), combined with extra reading to make sure I am not messing something up, it took me a couple of days to crop everything together and end up with a stable laptop able to even support overclock on the GT540M.

My system came with the A12 bios from Dell.
Intel ME Version: 7.0.4.1197 (7.0, Build 1197, Hot Fix 4).

    1. I have installed L502X_A12_540m_83_85_Unlocked_Menus_v6.rar (the recommended version for L502X with GT540M):

Custom voltage moded A12 bios mod for gt540m with advanced menus for L502X

Everything needed for the bios flash is contained within the .rar archive.

    2. To update latest Intel ME Firmware, which for the 1.5MB version 7 is v7.1.80.1214 (1.5MB), you need the 7.1.80.1214_1.5MB_PRD_UPD.bin file contained in a .rar archive Intel ME Firmware v7.1.80.1214 (1.5MB).rar (I have found a LOT of information and the link to the latests IME firmwares on the Win-Raid Forum link https://www.win-raid.com/t596f39-Intel-Management-Engine-Drivers-Firmware-amp-System-Tools.html) and the right version of the Intel Management Engine Firmware Update Utility (fwupdlcl 7.1.50.1166):

I hope this helps other users with Dell XPS 15 L502X GT540M.
Remember to keep all programs closed when doing the bios and the firmware updates and that your batter is charged and the laptop plugged in to avoid surprises in the middle of the flashing procedure.

Upon my research, I've noted that other laptop manufacturers have included the latest Intel ME Firmware in their BIOS updates. Clearly Dell didn't care enough for their customers to be arsed to do the same, hence going through the hoops.

As others posted, I don't assume responsibility if things don't go smooth in your case, this is meant as a help with the links and as a case report where everything went sweet and smooth. You do changes of your own choice and if things go wrong, you could end up with a bricked laptop.

Other notes I would like to make about the Dell XPS 15 L502X i7-2670QM GT540.

The mainboard chipset is North Bridge: Intel Sandy Bridge-MB IMC/ South Bridge: Intel Cougar Point HM67 supporting Dual DDR3 PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 memory. The motherboard's chipset supports four slots, of which only two are installed in the GT540M version of the laptop. Dell claims the laptop supports max 4GB of RAM (2x 4GB Dual DDR3 PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 memory). This I found not to be true.

I have tried the following memories with no restrictions as to running frequency:
    - QUMOX 16GB(2x 8GB) DDR3 1600MHz PC3-12800 (204 PIN) SO-DIMM MEMORY - it ran at 1600MHz and I have found confirmation online that the L502X is capable of running memories at both 1333MHz and 1600MHz
    - Kingston HyperX Impact HX321LS11IB2K2/16 Black 16GB (8GB x2) DDR3L 2133Mhz PC3-17000 Non ECC Memory RAM SODIMM - it ran at 2133 MHz.

With the custom bios from Capitan Kasar you can lock these memories at lower frequencies in favour of lower latencies, but I think that this would decrease overall performance of the system.

I am now waiting for updated links to the unlocked BIOS for the L702X. I own the L702X for some years now and I never knew I needed an unlocked BIOS until now.

My L502X runs a Intel Core i7 2960XM now instead of the initial i7-2670QM.
I have used some premium thermal grease to compensate for the increase in TDP (55W instead of 45W).

Hello, I have such a problem I can not enter the BIOS settings menu p
    Here is how it was:
I got the idea to put a poppy axis on my laptop. Everything was fine Yosemite was installed, but I got stuck on a reboot, whatever I tried when starting without a flash drive, it says that "the operating system was not found" well, I think, okay, no luck ... But then I read that you can put a BIOS mod with unlocked menus, with the ability to enable the UEFI Booth function. Found a mod Attached file L502X_A12_540m_83_85_Unlocked_Menus_v6.rar
I turned on the ufi boot, reinstalled the poppy axis and everything worked, then I wondered what else was unlocked there, I press F2 in the upper left corner, "_" blinks a couple of times and the black screen farther and farther. The F12 menu comes in without problems, the diagnostics starts and says that everything is in order. when choosing a setup from the F12 menu, the result is the same. I restored Windows, tried the following activities:

    1) Reset BIOS with a battery (the reset happened because it swears at a dead battery, although I turned it off);
    2) Startup without a hard disk (the reset occurred because it swears at a dead battery, although I turned it off);
    3) Return the Official BIOS A12. I downloaded it from the off site, installed it.
    4) Roll back to A06.
    5) Put back A12))

Windows boots without problems, black screen only when entering BIOS settings
What else can be done I do not know, searches on the Internet have not led to any results.
Are there any options? maybe someone had this?

Maybe you've got fast boot enabled preventing you to access the bios.
I think Win10 allows you to change some bios settings from within the os.
I'm sorry I'm unable to help you more, but I've encountered something similar in my Toshiba Qosmio X70-A, which was sorted fast with the Toshiba utility allowing BIOS changes from Win10.

Maybe try this advice from Reddit:

    How to disable fast boot?
    1. open control panel.
    2. open power options.
    3. click "choose what the power buttons do" on the left bar.
    4. Click the link "Change settings that are currently unavailable" at the top.
    5. un-check "Turn on fast startup"
    6. click save changes.

    Hi everyone,
recently bought a i7-2820QM to replace the i5-2540M in my l502x.

I'm running into some trouble that someone may also had in the past or that anyone may have some info about.
After replacing the CPU Windows 10 20H2 randomly BSODs with a KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. This also happens when using a fresh Windows 10 installation.
If i can open the task manager before the system crashes, the reported cpu frequency is bogus. It bounces around values of 200000 GHz and more. Also the reported utilization is stuck at 100%. All this while the CPU itself is clocking normally (between 800MHz idle and its maximum boost clock).
Looking into the dumps created the system always crashes on the call PpmPerfSelectProcessorState which sounds like it has something to do with putting the cpu in different power or c states(?).

Looking at HWinfo i seem to have 'scored' an engineering sample of the CPU.

So far i have flashed the modified A12 bios from this thread and updated the ME firmware. No luck with a stable system so far.

So i guess my question is: Has anyone any idea about what might be my problem? Can an engineering sample CPU be that broken?

    Thanks

    I've refurbished an XPS L502X with an Core i5-2540M @ 2.60GHz (4 cores), nVidia GeForce GT 540M.
The BIOS was already A12 stock.

It seems this model has a lock preventing flashing same or inferior BIOS version.

This is the first Dell XPS L502x/ L702X I've encountered this issue with.

    Any advice?
