    @ WesleyNL

relating GPU, I didnt changed anything at the L702X, but I made also another version, one with my mods, and other with my mods + sharadeos GPU tweaks

as for the usb ports, well I use my L502X mostly as a desktop.

this means I have allways a external display connected to the minidisplay port

a usb keyboard, and a usb mouse.

this means only 1 usb port is avalible for other devices, and I dont like that .... ^^

yep, the L502X just have 3 usb ports ... ^^

I used one from the minipcie slots for bluetoth (minipcie slots still working fine)

I'm also thinking on getting another port working from a un used extension port.

click on my usb mods link from my signature for more info ^^

i know your post ^^, just sinds im not ot short i didnt start on extra ports, but i wanted at that time extra usb ports, i was thinking too use an 4 pin headphone jack and drill a hole in the back and make an special usb cable lols, since us is 4 pin to it will work out well
i have a keyboard with buildin 2 port hub, so i am not to short on ports , 2xusb2, 2xusb3 on my notebook so, and i also use an ext montior via hdmi>dvi using an cheap sharkoon cable wtich is only 7 euro and 3 meters long lol , gold plated to, ,. though i rather use my build in screen,

another thing i wanted to do was to make airflow beter and make drill a hole on bottom below the fan, the only problem is dust , i now need to clean each month the heatsink -.-,
i need to find something about it so i can easy access the heatsing, detach the fan andclean it, instead ipening up the whole god damn notebook

well, getting usb hubs also could be a fix for me, you can allways do that, specially getting a usb 3.0 hub wich give some usb 2.0 speed like ports.

but well, I will find all the internal usb ports before getting involved with hubs ^^

well, usb 3.0 is ok but not for hdds,, if you let them runn cached full speed the usb dissconnect and reconnect, so i run it as non cached and fast remove so the speed will be slower but more stable, for other devices, i dont know connecting usb 2.0 on 3.0 works fine, thats why i want more external sata ports, ofc buying an pm is noce to but 75dollars and not be sure this notebook works wit hit is a no

i have one of these dual powered ac adaptors of 3 amps on 5and 12v rail it was one of my old dock witch died, and i removed the cable and soldered a sara+a 4pin molex cable to it 3 ams should be enough to power 3 hdds but 2 is safer , it have every connection a regualr psu have to for devices , floppy drive , 4pin miolex, sata , sofar works well
i use it for some fans since i use a custom kade notebook cooler lols

    [IMG] [IMG]

i had a lil 4cm fan mounted on the top, thats why the hole lol , i drilled some small holes on the otherside so it can suck in cool air

    loving that :)))

    nice modding there.

in my case, as soon as my i5 proccesor package arrive, I will replace my old i3 and will also try some pending mod at the little stone module location.

hopefully next week will arrive .... ^^

i hads an i7 atm and sofar i never maxed it use, atleast i can't, not with games, winrar, 7zip, 100tabs firefox w/e , i see no use in upgradig cpu, if i only could upgrade gpu ,, it would be more lovely, companies should start making portable gpu cards for notebooks, instead everydamn month and ver up of a desktop gpu wiitch has a few mhz more speed and a few mb more memory, the cards are that fast yet it don't provide fps what the games want , 120 fps isnt enough, they want 500 or more fps, same with cpu's, 6ghz isnt enough they need to oc more why ? games dont even use 2+ cores , why oc that heavy

well, in my case, a i3 locked to 2.1 ghz, 2.2ghz with the BCLK OC.....

    I ordered a used i5 2430M for just 25 eur.

quite cheap and it brings turboboost feature and a higher clock, the igpu max frecuency is also higher.

this upgrade will not bring me two extra cores in the case of the i7s but well, for apps like dolphin wich are very core demanding and general performance it will be awesome ;)

yeah, as for GPU we are stuck to the nvidia GT card, and since it is not upgreadeable, only thing we can do is OC it, or use a external GPU setup. (making the laptop not really mobile ... :D)

and yeah, you are right, most apps dont use more than two cores.

thats why OC still noticiable, because it OC all cores, included the ones wich use the app.

so if an app is limited by CPU like dolphin emulator for me, performance will be better with higher clock CPU ^^

oh, and nice finds relating that hardware.

in my case I am happy with my 2,5" 7200 rpm hdds.

they offer a lot of space compared with ssd and they are way cheaper.

well, since the speed, windows take longer to boot, but well, since I dont turn off the machine too much, just for flashing tests and windows updates.

I cant complain too much ^^

I usually complain more about CPU and GPU performance than the HDD ^^

I dont care if a game take 20 seconds more to load, but when it is running, I want it runs smoth, not with poor performance or fps rate ^^

i don't turn my notebook of either, i drag it arround while its on to so ssd's is an good option for me, i use regular hdd's external

also what im happy about is that support is uber stupid here so i have gotten 2nd battery and charger for free,

1st time my charger stopped working bcuz of overheat it shutted down for a while, i didn't know that nor did they so i got a replacement for free, such a stupid support we have here, a week or 2 later i told them my battery is empty pretty fast so got a new one to within warranty , they sended a new and odly enough i didn't had to send my stuff
old battery is on 24% wear bcuz i gamed on it so half got burned i shouldnt have gamed on it
new battery is on 3% wear ,

as for ext gpu's, well... is that even possible with new notebooks nowdays ?, in the past they had an card slot where you could put in the card with a cable to the ext desktop gpu's but i don't see that happen models that we have now, ateast i never searched for it though

    lol, what a support :D

I wish also get spare battery and charger, but my machine isnt on warranty anymore ^^

also the hardware mods I did to the system are way too noticiable even for noob support guys :D

and about the EGPU, yes, it has been already done to the L502X, wich is basically a small L702X without some hardware or with some hardware changes.

so yes, give a look tho this topic

    [GUIDE] Dell XPS 15 L502x + [email protected] (PE4H-PM3N)

the procedure will be the same or almost the same for the L702X

a thing what i do notice is the fan behavior with my notebook, RWEverything | Read & Write Everything this prog, i used to be able to set fan off, low/max speed with 00 (off), 40(auto), 02(max speed) but for some reason it doesn't work properly anymore , when i change value's 40 to 02 fan turns off, , when i change value 40 to 00, nothing happends fan keeps spinning on the speed it was, also the fan doesn't switch off when temp below 50c , i don't know if fan behavior is difrent in the l502x , also i don't know what cause it why my fan acts like this,

mmm, so it worked fine before but it doenst work at all now?

not sure if you changed anything wich could cause that behabiour.

try set it to 00 (manual mode), then open speedfan software, in options enable dell support and restart the app.

then start again speedfan and try change the fan speed to 100%

seems r/w still work but not properly for some reason on my system

when i change value's is what happends

40 (auto) > 00 (off / manual) nothing happends but speedfan can 3step controll it
40 (auto) > 02 (full speed) fan turns off, if repeat the step set it to 40 then to 02 it goes full speed

also found a other value 01

40 (auto) > 01, vaulue change to 00 without fan changes, if its on it stay on if its off it stays off
change back to 40 (auto) > 01 (fan runs a step below max)

speeds listed below (+/- 5% speed) i rounded it on 0's , its abit faster with 3-7 rpm depending on fan / power it get probaly , these reading are from hardwareinfo 64bit

    01 3900 rpm
    02 4140 rpm
    40 (auto) step 1 off, step 2 2450 rpm, step 3 3450 rpm
    00 (manual) speedfan, step 1 0-34% off, step 2 35%-69% 2800 rpm, step 3 70%-100% 4140 rpm

sadly speedfan use speedstep to and with +5% each time

    @followme

I would try, but money is a issue for me, and SSD are not cheap, specially while adquiring ones with decent space amounts

hdds were cheaper, and for less money they offeres way more space, I have like 1 TB of storage in my L502X, that with SSD would be expensive as :) :censored: :)

I dont doubt SSD are faster, but it is currently out of my budget ^^

    @WesleyNL

as for the RWE, well you can try different combinations or try the app timewalker posted in my L502X topic, there is a link at the first post.

    relating the EGPU

you can get the PE4L-PM060A Package Contents

    PE4L-EC060A V2.1

you would just need a atx power suply and the GPU card itself.

well, I can see a full suze minipcie labeled wwan, you can attach the adapter there, however, yeah, it would require the palmrest to be removed unless you do some king of hardware mod to add a connector externally to easly plug the EGPU cable.

like I said, it is a dirty setup, it isnt really mobile or cute, but as for perfomance, well, it works.

this basically turns your laptop into a desktop machine... ^^

    @WesleyNL
Once thought about an eGPU as well. To me the afknapper was the PCIe bandwidth. In particular higher-performance cards do seem to use more bandwidth than PCIe 2.0 x1 can offer:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20111225200336/http://forum.notebookreview.com/7905798-post5589.html
Ivy Bridge PCI-Express Scaling with HD 7970 and GTX 680 Review | techPowerUp

And those adapters don't seem to go higher than PCIe 2.0 x1 on the notebook side. Even if they did, AFAIK the only PCIe port offering more is the one the current dGPU is connected to. Then, even if you would desolder the dGPU, as far as I know it is just a socket and you still don't have a usable connector.

    @ Brabbelbla
yeah i readed about speed, it seems a waste indeed, the notebook itself is ok in general, it have everything i could wish for and it does the job well to , it offer enough for me on connections like usb 3.0, esata, tosslink, 5.1 ch analog, hdmi/dvi, mini dp, , 2 hdd trays on sata 3 , a 1080p 3rd party screen , and more , the downside is the gpu. its bottlenecking the notebook performance i think

however i have a few questions in bios settings and since wiki don't dont realy tell if its usefull or not i ask it here

    peripherical config
spread spectrum clock enable or disable ?

    processor config
fast strings enable or disable ?

    memory config.
scrambler support enable or disable ?

i wanna get the best performance out if this

    disable ( + higher stable freq maximum , +electromagnetic emission )

    enable (+ performance , - stability (not allways ) )

    disable ( +performance + stability, - security )

    Hi all,
sorry for my question but i still see a lot of development going on concerning the XPS 17 (L702x).
Is it possible to undervolting the CPU (i7 SandyBrigde) somehow using RW-Everthing or the Biosmods?
The reason for my question is that still with a new Haswell 15watt Cpu (i7 4500U) its possible to decrease the voltage by 0,07volts which is nearly 10% less.
An undervolting on SandyBrigde would give a huge decrease of Temperature (45Watt TDP CPU).
Thanks a lot for you feedback.
    Regards Alex

Hi guys, new to the forum but sounds like you guys are the ones to speak to about the l702x bios!

Have read most of the topic but can't see any answers to the following...

I am making my l702x a hackintosh and so far so good all basically working in OSX...apart from CUDA graphics acceleration for Premiere After Effects etc...

According to people on the hackintosh thread this will never happen because OSX doesn't support Optimus... SO what I was wondering is if any of you have been able to disable Optimus on the non-3D version of the l702x i.e. disable the Intel HD and just use the 555m?

Other places I have read that this is impossible due to some darn hard wiring that makes it impossible but I was also wondering get what you guys opinion about that was?

    Cheers :)

nope it is mentioned a few times by now since i asked it to like twice i beleve, the non 3d ver is bounded by intell gma 3k and not able to disable it, , the only way to get rid of it is to use hdmi screen witch is direct nvidia and not using gma 3k , thats the only way, display port and internal screen is liked by intel's gma 3k sadly
also why osx.... , i rly dislike apple i rather use win8 over apple if you ask me

Thanks for the suggestion... actually I hadn't considered that... how does a VM work with regards using my graphics card? It's a laptop and so has optimus but if I make the VM itself use the graphics card will the os inside it use the graphics card too?

Hi please i have a little question on you, you write you have 1600Mhz RAM, but yours processor 2630QM support max 1333MHz this HW maximum ... Are you running on 1333Mhz or 1600Mhz. I think ANY modded bios not help you with HW maximum support. Thanks for answer, i think about UPgrade my L702X (now i have Kingston SSD+Centrino 6235 ... want mooore :))

Yeah I actually copied my spec from someone elses because I was using a mobile at the time and couldn't be bothered to type it all in since it was exactly the same (apart from that)- I have changed my profile to 1333 now...

As a side note I replaced the chassis on my Dell l702x yesterday which involved totally taking the machine to pieces and I noticed that the non 3d version does actually have 4 slots for RAM but only has two sets of clips...

Dell says the the non 3d version will only work with 8GB but thats just nonsense, I have 16GB (2x8GB) and its no problem at all...

I only have Home Premium which will only recognize 16GB but I think if you had Windows 7 Pro it would be worth trying 4 Ram cards cos you may well be able to get 32GB in there...

I'm not sure what the ramifications are of this tho (excuse the pun), Not sure how dangerous it is to have unsecured ram in there (because of the lack of clips) etc... I'd guess its like not screwing your hard drives in- if you dont move the computer it would probably be fine...

Feel free anyone to correct me on this

no clue realy, i use vmware, stock it use any video chip it can access, but most likely it use gma3k as stock but you can force it to use nvidia with the nvidia software or use hdmi so gma3k gets disabled

I entered that Thermal config.. changed the LOW fan and HI FAN to higher values like 63 (low) and 79(high) but nothing the fan is UP I also changed myself the thermal paste (using Arctic Silver 5) .. My fan is always at full speed... the problem is that even on IDLE state where nothing is on not even wi-fi the fan is crazy hi-lo-hi-lo.... ANY HELP PLEASE ??

it doesn't work the only way is via r/e software and change values in windows and can only be controlled by speedfan after (3 step) so not dynamic, what i do is wait till fan turns on and once its at its lowest speed i hit "00" so the speed becomes manual and wont change fan speed after unless you start up speed fan and change values liek i posted few pages back

if you change this value you can adjust speed 3 step
    00> manual
01> few rpm below high speed (not low speed)
    02> high speed
    40 > automatic

these are the values that works for me

    @NapsTer.VicTor

    try following this instructions.

download RWE, but, instead setting it to 02, set it to 00, then download speedfan, enter in options, enable dell support, and control the fan with the slider.

well, then i dont kow, those works for me on the L502X, all the mods I tested on the L502X usually works on the L702X, but it may need different values on this case, I would try stuff, but sadly I dont have one of those to try ...^^

you need to set speedfan settings...., its not automatic pal

    1. download speed fan v4.49
    2. install and run it after
    3. > config > options > enable dell support
    4. close the config menu and speedfan
    5. start speedfan and go convig > tempratures, (enable teprature watching for the sensor you want but disable the fan uder the "+ ")
    6. go to speeds and eable it and there it is the speed option,

    0-34% > off
    35>69% >low speed
    70>100% >high speed

    ] [IMG] [IMG]

oh yeah dont set it automatic since it dont work, and as i said in previouse posts, fan speeds only change at 3 step while speed fan does it per 5% but that doenst work like this on the dell notebooks

before you are done dont forget to change tempratures i circled the stuff you gotta change bcuz pc temratures are much lower so you have to higer them sothat you wont see a flame icon, also set core 0 to tray witch is the main cpu, so it will show its temprature in tray, you can only choose one of the sensors to show in tray

alt option , rename the senosrs , highlight one of them > hit f2 > fill in the name you want, not to long or half wont show

it will look like this if you do it correctly

hope this helps, if not then i wonder how you flashed your bios

I think 70 % could be from your RAM.... as every motherboard is meant to make a beep if you have no RAM or not properly installed.. this is how you can test a PC if it does not work well.. if you remove the RAM and it does not make a beep the motherboard is faulty.. so what you can do is remove all DIMM's but one... maybe one is faulty or there is a conflict between them.. for example i had only 4 gb and bought another 8.. but they are the same frequency and no problem.. also you can try that DELL Support center app ... and run a check, see if there is some hardware problem..

Regards the fan issue I was having a problem with the fan being maxxed out all the time too... I just changed my l702x to UEFI booting version of Windows 7 (because I hackintoshed it with Clover Boot) and now things are fine again... So possibly my computer was mining bitcoins for some hacker in the background, who knows...

While the fan after this re-install was alot better, a few days later I also replaced the chassis and base of the unit and used Arctic 5 on the heat sink. This has had a big impact on the idle temps which have dropped by about 20 degrees c... While the fan exhaust did not seem too clogged up I did notice that the intake on the base was pretty mucky so I'd guess having a clean one of those may have had an impact too.

    Hope thats helpful :)

One thing I did notice tho which you guys may know something about is that whatever I tried and whatever order I tried to install my drivers, the driver for the motion sensor caused a BSOD so I have had to disable it... Anyone have any ideas what the cause of that may be?

no, it can't - you can use e-sata connector with separate power supply
