ok sorry the problem has not yet done, the fan is still running very often and turns back permanently .. I'll post again test the bios of you posted and report again, do you have any other ideas? Have tried it with speedfan and Dell-SCT-IT8518E-Fan-Control-master but unfortunately that brings no real improvement

Usually these problems are caused by the bios, which bios do you have?

Hey Dexter this BIOS worked @ 9200 V. Any chance you can mod my Alienware 17 R2 BIOS? I got a 980+4980HQ all is good but CPU power throttle to 800GHZ while gaming in graphic intence situations. Was wondering if it's something i can disable in bios when its unlocked. I've searched and there was one but all the links to that are dead :(

    Hi @Dexter1983

is this updated to prevent meltdown and spectre ?
Why CMOS clear before. Is it not normal to do it afterwards ?
Can i use this BIOS on my 3D Mainboard with 4 RAM Slots and
    GT555M 3GB ?

I use the latest captain casars L702x modded bios.

DID YOU SUCCEED TO UPDATE THE INTEL ME ?
DID YOU USE IVY BRIDGE CPUS ALREADY ?

Please let me know when you succeed.

Which is the best BIOS for my L702X with GT555M 3GB.
and the 3D Version with 4 RAM Slots.

Would like to be protected from spectre & meltdown
and should have the unlocked menus and unvervolted GPU.

I'm an L702X Lover from Germany and have 2 L702X one is 120hz Display, 32GB Ram and 2860QM (but i dont have the 3D infrafred emitter - i just want the 120hz and the brightness)
and the other non 3D Mainboard i update the right know with new motherboard, screen and cable... ;-)

I also use an EGPU Setup with the BEAST Dock and a EVGA GTX1060 SC
in conjunction with the EGPU setup from nando with great success and 80% performance
on an external and 60-70% performance an the internal screen.

    @KillerB3340

What do you mean @9200V ?

Throttle to 800GHZ ? Wow do you have some kind of graphite based CPU ? :D

    Thank you got it.
I want to try this on my machine.
I use conductonaut so my cooling is enhancend
substantially so i think it will be no problem to overclock to the max.

Can i use this BIOS on my L702x (3D-4Ram-GT555M-3GB) ?

    Hi,
on this Page they make gpu overclocking, but there is nothing about the IVy Bridge Generation (3th).
I already have a Open bios on Me Laptop that i Can use my ddr3 2133MHZ normal only 1300mhz work.
I also connect a gtx1070 to my laptop with mpci.
And i Upgrade the cooling 2 extra Fans and more heatpipes.

My next Step is upgrading the cpu to an i7 3940xm but i dont find the Solution.

Interesting. I'm from Germany. Got my L502X since 2012 but since then bought
several used 3D L702X and L502x, some upgraded and then sell some just sell
and making some extra bucks ;)

    @temho

To my knowledge its not yet possible to upgrade to ivy bridge processors
The best sandy bridge is 2860QM but you could try to use 2960XM BUT
you need best possible cooling with conductonaut paste, because it has
55W instead of 45W like the 2860QM has. I also want to try
this... but the performance difference between the two is little
and it still costs 150$... the 2860QM only 88$ in China...

I hope someone will update the Intel ME to 8.0. Then it will be possible
    to use ivy bridge processors.

    5,2GHZ Overclocking world record.... OMG

    https://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/core_i7_2960xm/

no i REALLY want to try the 2960XM
with normal paste it would not be a good idea
because of throttling BUT with conductonaut metal paste
my fan hardy goes to half speed with my 2860QM
I think i could use the 2960XM even with some overclocking..

Will the mainboard go with this extrem conditions ? Thats the question...

I recently got an Alienware17R2 dirt cheap off eBay with GTX980&4980HQ for gaming @ work, it's not bad but the cpu throttle is pissing me off

I ran my L702X @ 810 MHz for years before upgrading, i did remove the mesh on bottom from the inside for better air flow.

    Yep that will work. Exactly
like the L702X. Please make shure that u
really use VERY little conductonaut so that
the paste does to get to the Aluminium body
and stays on the copper. Please isolate the
electronic structures directly around the CPU and the GPU
chip so you dont get a shortcut. Do this with some
epoxy resin glue. That stuff is very chemical stable.
Epoxy is used in electronics a lot...

You can even isolute the aluminium around the copper plates!
I didnt do it. On one of my machines i even didnt isolate
the electronic structures around the chips and not shortcut.
Its important to really use very little... approximately 1/4 needlehead
on the chip and 1/4 of a needlehead on the copper plates.
Just a VERY thin layer of this stuff so it does go somewhere else and just
    sticks there!!

Cooling will be dramatically enhanced as you will find!
20% at the least! Then also remove all dust filters and other barriers
    for optimal air flow!

Nahh, i dont do Liq.Metal. I did try Noctua NT-H1 and i might have done something wrong or it was an old stock"OLD PASTE" . Will have to repaste this thing as soon as i'm done with my main rig.

I've seen many reviews and it's 3-5 degree difference between L.metal and good paste but the risks are higher.

    Hey there everyone :)

First off, this has to be one of the absolute best and longest (8 years!) threads on a computer system / issue I have ever seen. Kudos to you all who have participated. I stayed up waaayyy too late last night trying to read every piece of it but I'm sure that I stopped absorbing somewhere around 2am. Maybe ya'll can help me -

So I have the XPS L702x 3D Nvidia 555m. It was my dad's - he was a computer programmer his whole career and would have just absolutely loved what you have done here. He passed away, it'll 5 years ago this year, and my brother and I took on the herculean task of going through his lifetime of computer equipment including a literal mountain of hard drives. Reading about the RAID functionality I wish we had saved some of them! Oh well, I don't need it anyway. I'll continue -

Now I've used this laptop for about 4 years. Couldn't touch it for nearly a year. Then took a year to clean it out, reload it, update everything to most current software, and physically clean it. Been running great since. Now, normally I wouldn't need 3 monitors running but with the COVID-19 going on and my 4 daughters and I at home for at least the foreseeable future with our stay at home orders from the government we need as much computing power and accessibility as we can get! I tried running both MiniD and HDMI to external screens and using the built in just to find what has been told here. No functionality with the 3D unit. Boo!

So here is the ask - anything at all a guy can do to get the 3rd running? Is there some physical component built in that can be removed to allow both Intel and Nvidia to run simultaneously and get 3 monitors? Or do I have to buy a very expensive dock? What are my options? If we are getting into that 100ish dollar range I would probably just buy another chromebook for a couple hundred. Seems more worth it?

Your thoughts? Thanks in advance for your consideration!

    D

I am now waiting too for updated links to the unlocked BIOS for the L702X. I own the L702X for some years now and I never knew I needed an unlocked BIOS until I needed some fix for the L502X and came across the Capitan Kasar's unlocked bios. I need an eagle splash screen at start up, please!

Thank you, I've just bought a second L702X (the GT555M version) and some other goodies (4x dimms Kingston FuryX DDR3 2166MHz, a second Intel Core i7 2960XM, some high end thermal grease, Intel AX200 WiFi 6 cards with PCIE adapters etc.) and this is coming in very handy in updating / upgrading both laptops.

Doing my due diligence, I have started reading the topic from the beginning and noted that the video cards are coming in two flavours, the GF106 and the GF116.

    I have the GT550 M GF116 BIOS 70.26.40.00.04.

Are these BIOS files suitable for my laptop?

    l702x gt550m GF116.gif

LE: I have tried the "capitanKasar5 2F" bioses, they both work and allowed my memory to run at 2133MHz instead of the default 1333MHz. As the only visible difference, with the L702X_A19-2F_generic_Unlocked_Menus_&_updated_cpu_microcode May 2019 anti Spectre.zip you also get Capitan Kasar's Eagle splash screen, so I'll keep this version on.

I can confirm that with the capitanKasar5 2F\ L702X_A19-2F_generic_Unlocked_Menus_&_updated_cpu_microcode May 2019 anti Spectre.zip I get the Eagle splash screen.

While I am very grateful to you guys for posting and re-posting these custom BIOSes (got both my L702X GT 550M and L702X GT 555M laptops upgraded), I must admit that I couldn't figure the difference between the different files. Beta sounded unfinished, so I've settled for the above version which comparing with the stock BIOS, offers me everything I wished for: stability, unlocked RAM frequency, and the possibility to disable BD-PROCHOT in the L702X GT 555M laptop in which the CPU was defaulting otherwise to 0.798 GHz despite no high temps on the CPU / GPU (probably a bad sensor or a less powerful-than rated power brick).

I wish I would have the same BIOS unlock on my Toshiba Qosmio X70-A and the Clevo PC50DN2.

I have not figured yet a way to play with CPU or GPU voltages to find a more stable profile, but things are already as good as I could hope, so probably I will stop here.

Is there someone who was able to use this laptop in raid configuration?
I'm really to old to get the raid to work. Can somebody give me an step by step manual for an bootable raid config win 10? If I activate the raid menu I can instal win 10 but I struggle always with the boot menu. One time I accidently could boot from an ssd raid but the access the the boot menu stopped working.
I know on page 60 the menu. Is there an youtube video anywhere where the process is visible? Sorry for my questions.
    Best regards
