AB1O5AG6 IDE Controller = probably virtual drive, do you have Daemon-Tools, Alcohol, AnyDVD/CloneCD/etc?

Still waiting for an answer: With the new Synaptics driver and the one below it for multitouch, would I install BOTH or just the second driver to get multitouch?

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47501-48000/sp47815.exe

Gaah thats a link to the Synaptics touchpad driver 15.0.1 without scribe packaged in. Its an HP oem driver but works fine, been using it for awhile perfectly.

I don't like dealing with having to install scribe with synaptics just to get the newest version, then uninstalling scribe. This is just the driver/touchpad package by itself :)

Yeah we don't need hp drivers for that.. there is a Dell 15.x release but I haven't had time to ensure compatiblity yet. Will do that tonight and if it's good, add it to the list.

Its a synaptics driver, not an HP driver. Just happened to be used for HP laptops.

It works 100% perfectly. The filename is a synaptics one, not hp..

    Just installed it.
    Installation went fine.
Version numbers got updated per the log and the device manager.

    No difference on 3Dmark06 results.

Only issue is that Catalyst Control Center won't start anymore... does anyone face this problem too ?

    Thanks.

Have a problem with my new 1645
Seems as though some sites with intensive gifs. and animations it slows down my whole cpu. Takes 5 seconds to register a scroll down the page, and another 5 seconds to click on bookmarks or any other tab.

I downloaded the latest drivers from ATI, to no avail still giving the same effects.
Any ideas on a solution or what problem might be. (does the site have same effect on anyone else http://www.mmosite.com/ its what i use to check my mmorpg games)

What software do I need to enabled all 8 cores on a 720qm? I can't seem to get it to work.

The 720QM has only 4 cores and 8 threads (2 threads per core). So you can't enable 8 cores as there are only four. The processor automatically dictates how many cores need to be activated for a particular task, so you don't have to do anything. i.e. If you are performing tasks that require one core, only one core is awake. I don't think you need any software to activate anything on the 720QM as everything should be functioning from the factory. I think it was only with the i5 processors that one needed to download a driver to activate turbo boost. Full i7 info

Yea sorry that was a typo, I was typing on my netbook. I meant to say threads .

That's the first thing I did, forcing a BIOS update didn't change anything. Sometimes all 8 threads are enabled, if I reboot they might now appear and be set back to 2 cores with 4 threads lol. I'm going to wait for my guy to call to get either the CPU or Mobo replaced. It works but it's running hot 50-66c with aftermarket paste on... I might switch to AS5 and see if the results differ.

Can anyone tell me which version of the ATI drivers (specific links if possible) they feel is best and have installed currently?

I was comparing my laptop to my gf's and I noticed that everything is identically smooth in regular desktop use, but for some reason, resizing windows feels a little less "smooth" and more jerky on my 1645 compared to her laptop. It may seem trivial, but it's driving me crazy.

Power plan is set to High Performance while plugged in, min/max state of CPU is 100%, ATI PowerPlay enabled. I've tried disabling Powerplay, but still the same "jerkiness" when resizing any windows (including Explorer).

    Any ideas?

This is a driver at its legacy. Dell provides this with all its computer since a very long time. For desktop it was known as Desktop System Software and for laptops it was known as Notebook System Software(NSS). Now they have renamed it to Dell System Software.

It is more of a system wide patch becoz of conflicts with some of the windows update hotfix and other system patches.

Hey guys, I have a question about the graphics drivers. What's the difference between the Dell version and the two files from ATI? You don't install all 3, right? It's either the one from the Dell or the 2 from ATI? So, my question about the 2 from ATI is... do you do a custom install or do a full install of both files? Thanks.

Dell doesn't post all the updates they make on the support page, you have to find the updates that are compatible with your hardware on your own.

    Just out of curiosity,

How to identify from these strange file names like R266782.exe, that this is a synaptics touch pad update file ?

Also, 1645 touchpad is multitouch, is this update for multitouch touchpad of 1645 ?

Here's another way to find the updates. Goto support.dell.com, and at the top of the page is a search bar. Entire the manufactures name or some part of the title of the device, for example: radeon, bluetooth, synaptics, quickset, ite, racoh, etc. It will bring up the search results, but you need to filter the results to show just downloads/driver updates by selecting under "Narrow your selection," "Support & Help Category," and finally choosing "Drivers and Downloads." This will bring up all the Dell packages available for download, and to find the latest versions change the "sort by" option to "Date." Then just look through the packages Dell has posted for various computers of theirs and look for one that has similar hardware and operating system to yours, and give it a try. Generally most of the updates for IDT, Mobility Radeon, Bluetooth chips are all compatible for the same hardware regardless of the model of computer it was released for. The way you know it's compatible is that Windows won't install it if it's not. All the drivers have a hardware identification file with unique vendor and model codes, and if it has the same codes as your hardware, it will work. Otherwise Windows will just give an error that no compatible driver was found.

Don't worry about it specifying a model of computer it's for, Dell uses basically the same drivers as the manufacture develops and they don't make them for a specific piece of hardware, and because the drivers include all the proper device codes and it passes WHQL certification, it means the driver was tested to be compatible by the manufaucture and Microsoft with all the device codes included in the driver. So really, the driver was meant for a wide range of computers, but Dell for some reason doesn't bother to release the updates like that, instead focusing on specific issues and specific computers instead. Actually, Dell doesn't usually release many driver updates for their computers specifically, unless there's a major problem to be fixed. Otherwise they release the initial drivers at launch just to get the computer working and usually that's it. Dell is great about driver updates though because they make it fairly simply for the technically inclined to find compatible updates that you're free to use but they just won't provide full technical support for it. Most other manufactures, you're generally stuck with old versions of everything...

Here's a few other things I forgot to mention: The desktop driver updates don't usually work on laptops, so make sure you stick with the same type of computer. Dell also has two different classes of computers, that is the consumer line which includes Inspiron/XPS/Alienware, and the business class which includes Precision/Optiplex/Vostro, and the drivers aren't usually compatible. Sometimes not all the features are always enabled in a particular release that you want, either.. particularly with the Synaptics drivers. Just use what works for you in that case.

Either use the search features on support.dell.com, or just download the files from the FTP and run it to see what it is (it prompts you if you want to extract/install with all the relevent information on hardware and operating system support).
