[Update] Hmm, I think I was missing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology update, which seems to have fixed the problem. I had a feeling it was related to heavy harddrive accessing, but this pretty much confirms it. :D I thought I had installed this one already, but I guess not. [End of Update]

Hey guys... been a long time since I posted here, since all has been working well for me. (Un)fortunately, I just reloaded Windows on my still beautiful 1645. Everything is running very well with one exception: Audio play back "hangs" for maybe 0.5 seconds (with that typical buzz/grinding noise coming over the speakers like when there is a full system lock-up and a sound is playing) every 15-90 seconds (the timing is definitely random). I vaguely recall this being an issue sometime long ago, but clearly some setting or driver that I had installed before the whip had solved this issue, because it definitely wasn't a problem before.

Any thoughts or recommendations? I could go through the long list of drivers that I've fully updated already, but let's just assume for now that I've covered my bases. If anyone remembers the exact fix for this, or has an inkling that they could point me in the right direction, I'd love to hear it.

    Cheers!

I know this is late but I just installed a 480 GB Corsair Force GT SSD in my 1645 and it's running great so far. The desktop loads and is completely usable in less than 30 seconds after boot!

Ya, I hate the IDT effects, they are all off. Personally, I would recommend that to everyone.

For my problem, it was definitely the Intel Rapid Storage Update.

    Hey folks,

I mentioned the app TwoFingerScroll in a previous post, but it looks like it received an update. It makes the trackpads on most windows laptops with Synaptics touchpads WAY better. Check out the following link for more info.

I like the the smooth scroll option provided in the Two Finger Scroll app much better than two-finger scroll with the stock Synaptics driver. Also, I don't believe two-finger tapping to right-click is enabled with the stock driver. The TwoFingerScroll app is definitely worth checking out!

Still going strong! Put a Sammy 830 SSD in it.. it's pretty fast now.
Battery is pretty bad though, considering buying a new one from Ebay.
Would be a 9cell if the XPS wasn't so big and heavy already.

Lasts only 45min now browsing, with screen dimmed and turbo disabled.
Won't last 15min if I do something intensive

Still up to 2hours of moderate CAD usage. Battery wear to 30% according to Battery Bar. Last increased after changing to a Crucial M4 256GB and kept my 750GB WD Caviar Black in place of the optical drive.
I'm still happy with my 1645. Don't need to change for the moment. I'm waiting for a cheap 840QM on ebay to replace the 720QM. I'm even think about changing the battery and keep the laptop for one or two more years.

Is it an easy job to replace the 720QM?
I would do something like that but only if the 840QM is overclockable.... I already put AC5 silver paste on the CPU and GPU and OCed the hell out of the GPU..but CPU still stuck at 1.8ghz on multicore usage

    Oh Batterybar says 39% here

Changing CPU: Easy I think as in a desktop computer. I already changed my thermal paste too. The CPU is not soldered.
Overclocking: Nope I think. And you won't find any settings in Dell BIOS.
840QM won't transform your laptop to a recent generation laptop, only 15-16% more frequency and 33% more cache. That is why I would buy a new CPU only at a cheap price:

It's basically the same CPU..just clocked higher.. that's why it makes me mad we can't OC the 720qm :(

Mine going good as well, 23% battery wear level. Sammy 830 SSD is so tempting and so is its price, Might just go for a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB.

CPU change is easy just slide the lock and the CPU pops up. Piece of cake!

I will be changing the thermal paste soon. 6 Months more and the warranty would be out.

Just got display and audio jack replaced, Display had super scratches due to key strokes, Someone please suggest a Pad I can put on the keyboard and palmrest to protect the display, there was some sleeve people used to use but i cant find that thread anymore.

Well if I was gonna buy a new CPU if would be one of the 920XM EE which are overclockable with throttlestop
..but they go for $250 used and 500$+ new...LMAO

Just had my heat-sink and fan and BD/DVD writer replaced. YAY for still being under warranty. Temp is still around 50c though. However, it is much better than it was. xD

Only thing that has bothered me over the years is software related issues mostly.

My 1640 with 9 cell lasts like 4 hours on battery. (My night classes when I was still in grad school lasted 3h45m and battery would still have about 10-15% left) Moderate usage during class while taking notes / surfing web cuz I don't pay attention.

That's pretty bad battery life you got :\

Not really, Ati drivers stopped at 12.6 for the 4670. Maybe some generic drivers that got updated.
Mine still works though.. Will keep it till it dies

Any XPS 1640 users with HD3670 still around here? I'm on Windows 8 and wondering what video drivers to install. I downloaded a new driver from the AMD website (this one to be exact: AMD Catalyst 13.1, which is supposed to support the HD3000 series) and it's often giving me an error message on start up... Would be nice to get rid of that problem.

I installed the Synaptics TouchPad v17.0.19 on my Dell StudioXPS 1647 with core i5, and I followed the instructions presented by uninstalling my previous Dell Touchpad Driver, but now I cannot use touchpad gestures and I cannot access the touchpad. What did I do wrong? Thanks in advance, and thank you for all the drivers and help, great forum.

I know this thread is pretty old by now, but still I have a question regarding new graphic card drivers for my XPS 1645, is there any newer version for the built-in HD 4670?
The driver version installed is from 04/25/2013, but I can't manage it to get a new driver from the ATI/AMD website...

I'm having an issue using Windows 10 on my 1645. The Ethernet connection will go brain-dead every day or two, requiring a re-boot to clear. This is after the in-place upgrade to Win10. It appear that the Broadcom driver v.15.6.0.10 may be the latest for the BCM5784M adapter (I'm not certain that this is the version I have installed.....not presently at home to verify)......has anyone had luck fixing this issue?
