Haven't used the turbo boost monitor for more than a few minutes at a time.
And stalker37- it's just a MONITOR, it's not supposed to be of any benefit to the computer's performance. It's just for the user, and it's quite gimmicky.
-
Thanks, you are right. I think it really has no practical use except tracking processor activity if you are having problems, making sure your turbo boost is working, etc. so I uninstalled it.
-
Even I recommend the previous version 1.04 and it was even a gadget and not a seperate application
-
Yep, very true, thanks. It worked perfectly.
-
Did you guys notice that DELL has not released any driver updates for our systems for already like 3 month or even more.
i guess from now we are on our own... -

Ya, it is annoying that they have stopped listing the updates on the drivers page for our laptops. Thankfully, this thread has been keeping me mostly up-to-date on new drivers.

Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility link in first post is dead.
New version out as well.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver 10.1.2.1004
Official app download is now avail over at Toshiba site while we wait patiently for Intel to finally getting around updating their site... -
Does that work for you? I tried it from Station Drivers while back but it didn't work / didn't install so I didn't post here...
-
I just installed the above and I still have version 10.1.0.1008 in "About" in the app help section but it does say version 10.1.2.1004 in "Programs and Features". Also, the installation looked good (i.e., no errors) and the app seems to be working.
-
Did you run it via cmd line and with the 'overall' or 'overwrite' switch (can't remember which one)?
For me, it fails when it starts installing/writing the update, then tells me to reboot. Once I get back, it shows it's still running old version in About but Programs shows something was installed.. so sounds similar to your experience. I just get the error via cmd line and About still shows the old version. -
No, didn't think of it at the time. Just did normal install.
-
Not sure if this is the right topic, but I will try
I'm looking for a program to customize procesor speed depending on power option and load. Something like RightMark CPU Clock Utility (which I've been using for few years on my previous system) or Notebook Hardware Control.
I've tried both of them but they don't work either on Windows 7 64-bit or with 4-core processors.
I have XPS 1645 with i7-720QM and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I would like to minimize processor speed (and power consumption) during normal everyday work (Office, Internet, music etc) and during working on battery. -
you can try Throttlestop.by setting custom clock multipliers and thus reduce processor speed and power consumption.
more info at: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/446193-s-xps-1645-throttling-info-updates.html
you will be decreasing clock multipliers instead -
Thank you for answer. That's very interesting topic (I have 130W adapter but when I tried to load cpu to 100% (with IntelBurn Test) I had troubles with that) and I will study it.
If i try to reduce processor speed this way. Will it increas under load by itself or will I have to change it manually when I need more power? -
i do not think that it will increase by itself, however i'm not sure if turboboost will prevent it from doing that. there is also another option for you. you can set maximum operating CPU load of your processor in percentage at the advanced power management settings menu of the windows power management (left click on the battery icon in the system tray). create a custom power profile and set desired maximum CPU loads
-
I can try this too. Thanks.
And is it possible in any way to customize core use of processor? I mean that for example all aplication use just the first core (when there is no need for more power) and only under heavy load other are used too?
I'm not sure if that would actually make any sens (in terms of power consumption and temperatures). I just cannot stop thinking that temperature should be much lower when I just browse the Internet or watch a movie. On my previous computer it would maybe use 1 or 2 percent of much slower CPU. Here I can see use of all cores that almost never drops.. -
temperatures ranging 50-75C is normal during internet surfing, word processing or watching movies for such processor type. and i think it is not possible to exclude 3 other cores for such use.
P.S. this thread is for driver/software updates only, so you'd better move this discussion to other topics like 1645/1647owner thread or create your own thread. -

Mine starts with aroung 50 and then goes up to ~70C or so. It's not bad at the beginning when it's cool, but after few minutes/houres it's getting hoter withouht doing anything more power consuming.
Sorry for this OT, I will move to other topics. -
Pretty long wait this month but the AMD Catalyst 11.3 is here
though the release notes says there's nothing new
Change Log:

+AMD Catalyst 11.3 v8.831 -
Installed and working fine thus far
-
It looks like there's some stuff in the release notes now:
Update: installed, decided to restart, logged in, system froze, held down power button, rebooted, everything seems normal.Code:Highlights of the AMD Catalyst 11.3 Windows release includes: New Features: Seamless GPU Compute support The AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) OpenCL runtime is now enabled by default within AMD Catalyst. Applications that leverage OpenCL for GPU based compute tasks will automatically benefit from the significant performance boost that this provides. Resolved Issues for the Windows 7 Operating System This section provides information on resolved known issues in this release of the AMD Catalyst 11.3 software suite for Windows 7. These include: 3D BluRay playback no longer displays random frame loss. The 8x Anti-Aliasing is now correctly listed in some OpenGL applications. System no longer shows laggy performance when playing 720P WMV video files. Tearing is no longer randomly observed when playing Bioshock with Vsync and MLAA enabled. -
Have rebooted played games for a number of hours and just been using the system normally, new AMD Radeon drivers seem stable.
-
Same here, these drivers works gr8. Got a replacement battery and Re-did the Thermal paste today, System is cool and smooth now
-
How do you ensure you get a replacement battery? Say anything in particular?
I ran into this issue with Dell before where my battery was just fine at one year but the warranty was only one year on the battery and I had no idea because I don't think they told me when I bought the computer and the 3-year warranty. Anyways, a year to year and a half later, my battery was fried and I think I spent $100+ for a new battery on eBay and it would have been like $175+ from Dell.
My laptop and battery are almost one year old now and I would like to avoid this same situation so looking to get the battery replaced now rather than spend a decent amount later. Thanks! -
My system is 6 months old and the wear level was 16% even after that I was getting max of 1hr 35mins. I contacted dell and told them that i tried to recalibrate the battery by full discharge and recharge and i am getting half the battery life I used to a month ago that is 3hr 30mins. They told me to update BIOS which we know it was already up-to-date
. The tech tried to explain that the battery usually looses its charge with time and give worse battery life. I told him I hardly use the battery and aftter 6 months of use I was not expecting battery life less than 2hr 30mins. He consulted his supervisor and agreed to send me a replacement battery.
If you have used it 10-11 months and warranty of battery is of 1 year. They will replace your battery only if they find an error message from Dell battery meter or else they would just tell you that it weared off with usage and its functioning as designed. Hope this helps
-
Thanks, my friend!
-
Meh, I had been using the default dell drivers without any problems.
Recently changed to the newest amd drivers but can't say it makes any difference at all..... -
Can someone help me with the speaker rattling issue on my XPS 1647,I cannot find the right thread for the fix for this issue.
-
I don't know if there is a "fix"... you could check for loose screws near the subwoofer (easily located if you remove the bottom panel of the laptop).
Also, go to the IDT Audio panel (Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> IDT Audio Control Panel). Then go to "Playback", "Speakers/Headphones" and makes sure the "SRS Premium Sound" garbage is not enabled (ie, make sure the bubble next to "enable" is grey, not green). Bass boosting and other junk like that will certainly aggravate the problem.
Similarly, you can right click on the speaker icon in your system tray, select "Playback devices", select "Speakers / Headphones", click on "Properties", select the "Enhancements" tab, and check "Disable all enhancements". Same reasoning as above.
No idea if this will completely solve the problem, but I bet it will help
-
Thanks for the quick reply would try them certainly

Dell went historical
Dell SXPS 1645 A13 BIOS
Dell SXPS 1647 A11 BIOS
Fixes: Solve Lojack malfunction issue.
Release Date: 4/7/2011 -
that was quick!
-
That one also supports 5100, which is in my 1640
Going to update ATI drivers now, as I'm playing Crysis 2 with drivers from 2009 -.-
Is it recommended to uninstall and use driver sweeper or smth before updating? Or has ATI gotten their together by now and can you just run the driver updater and let it take care of it all properly? -
for the most part, you should be able to just download and run the installer for the driver and it should all work.
operative word here is "should" i don't nkow how well the driver installer plays with older drivers (like pre-10.2) -
First, thanks for the update on the BIOS. Since I don't have Lo-Jack, I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply to me... but I just like having the most up-to-date stuff on my computer
Anyway, I just ran the battery test on the Dell Support Center App, and it gave me a warning that my [9-cell] battery is only running at 57% of it's original capacity. I received my sXPS 1645 around 9/20/10. Do you think I'll be able to convince Dell to send me a new battery also?
On a sidenote, I did get them to send me a new power adapter..... Why? Because the plastic piece that goes in the rubber strap broke off at the tip, so wasn't able to secure the rubber strap when wrapping the wires around the adapter. I asked them to send me just the little plastic piece, but they said that they needed to send me an entire new adapter. Overkill for sure, but I didn't complain. lol -
Hey guys, when you installed the latest intel wifi software, did you install all the programs that it came with or you just installed the driver?? I have the intel 5100, btw. I installed everything and i just felt that its just bloatware (the ProSet/wireles and intel my wifi). What does even "intel my wifi" does? Should I uninstall them?
-
If you have driver so old or the modded driver for dell like on their site it would be better if you do the whole uninstall and reinstall
just to be on the safe side.
You meant 9/20/10 right ?
They will definitely send you the battery no questions asked. Tell them that the battery meter says the battery is faulty and asking to replace. As its under 1 year they will replace it. Even if the Dell utility said that battery is faulty on the last month even then they will replace as they go through the process of what their utility says.
i cant believe they did that omg
hey u got a new adapter even when it wasnt faulty
Do one thing. Uninstall the Intel Wifi set and on the main page you have the one which says DRIVER ONLY, Install that
-
Oops, I've blown my cover that I'm actually from the future! lol Thanks for the info on the battery. I'll get on that soon.
-
Lojack? What's that supposed to mean? The issue where the bios doesn't remember settings?
Well not gonna use it anyway... who wants 84c gpu thermal limit??
-
Lojack is that thing somewhat well known for helping track down stolen cars, and now there's a 'laptop version.'
They didn't want to explicitly state "Fixes an issue where the BIOS forgot most settings when you restart on battery" because that makes them look bad, especially considering how long the laptop has been around for. -
Gr8
do let me know
I am on stock A12 and my GPU doesnt ever go above 75C
never throttles
pretty happy with 5730, gr8 card
Right on the lojack part but got an PM from chicho and he states that the settings issue persists
-
Well ye, but the 4670 gets a lot hotter....
-
I know its sad, I had it before. I live in india and because of the temperature here that card was literally unusable
