Lol, yeah I would never buy from them unless I had no choice. However I would have no qualms about buying from John Lewis.

have a friend flying in in 2 weeks

Risco, budget Dell at Tesco Extra and some XPS at Micro Anvika
-
I was looking at this earlier. Saw the adverts on TV for the 13 at JL but nowhere else selling anything current from Dell.
Would have liked one to have it in store to get a good look at it.
Spose I could go look at the 13... It's just one of them on Steroids. -
For those hesitant to buy the XPS 15, would any of you buy it if there was a 30% coupon code? Or would you still not buy it?
My company said they can get this laptop for me for 30% off, but I'm still debating between this one, the Envy 15, Sony S15/13, and the Gigabyte U2442N. The U2442N is currently at the top of my list, but it's not out yet and I haven't seen any full reviews on it besides hands-on videos. So I'm going to wait a bit longer before I make a decision.
I'm just curious to know if people would pull the trigger if a 30% off coupon code was available right now for the XPS 15. -
30% off is a steal.
I'm waiting a month or two to see if they'll sell a US model w/ 512GB SSD. If not I'll just grab the XPS 15 w/ GT640m business deal for $1399 and buy my own SSD. -

30% off brings the price down to where it should have been to begin with. It's not a steal, but a reasonable starting point. Only you can decide if the specs will meet your daily usage and purpose requirements. -
And if 30% coupon code was available for Envy, Sony and Gigabyte too.
Obviously if I can get 30%of discount on XPS and prices of others possible choices remain unchanged, it would be a serious candidate if reviews will be good.

Unfortunately it isn't the starting price which makes 30% a steal. I'm just tired of everyone complaining about the price and what it should have been. I know that the Envy wouldn't be a steal if it didn't have the coupons it does but I don't hear people saying that.
-
Though less-than-clear, I meant those two sentences to be largely independent clauses. Ordinarily, I expect to see reviews post numbers around 30-50 below the luminance rating provided by the manufacturer. It seems as though major manufactures don't usually give numbers inflated by 100 nits on notebook displays, so I thought maybe either something was wrong with the measurement or with the unit. My surprise referred to it being out of the usual range of difference from the rating. The refresh comment more pertained to reactions from L501/2X owners who seemed unhappy with a few aspects (Sound/CPU/Display) that I imagined would be addressed in an eventual refresh.
Ouch!
Several people have already explicitly noted that the Envy's coupons underlie many of the comparison prices. However, as I noted earlier, the after-coupon price is the one other manufactures have to compete with, especially given how frequently such coupons appear. Most buyers are not going to be convinced to ignore one product's higher price simply because a competing product's final price is reached via discount. -
I WOULD SO BUY IT IF IT WERE 30% off
-
I'm not saying that I'm saying a 30% coupon for the XPS is a steal the same way the coupons for the Envy are a steal. I was simply replying to Muffin Man's denial of it being a steal because "that's what the starting price should have been". And in that case than the Envy's starting price should be how it is with the coupon code. I was just making a comparison.
-
The fact is the laptop should be around 1400 which it is on the business site. I don't see why its 1700 on one site but not on the other. Its obvious Dell can sell the computer for 1400 and still make profit, so the 1700 price is just too high.
-
Oh. Oops. Well, in my defense, I never did advertise myself as being literate.
-
Its been confirmed Best Buy models are being put up to order on Wednesday and are shipping out Thursday.
-
Based on spec and price, I decided to pick up a Vizio 15.6 notebook. It has full HD display, 8GB 1600Mhz PC-12800 Ram, i7 3610QM processor, upgraded to a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD. All in just priced at $1405.
I have been using it to play two movies, surfing net and doing some other processing works. The battery last slightly less than 6 hours. It will last longer if I did not play that two movies with external blue-ray drive. Machine is rather quiet and cool. It is very nice and solid except it does not have a backlit keyboard but I am ok with it. Keyboard and touch pad are nice too.
The warranty is two years and I got a special 15% voucher from Vizio to purchase for other products. So, I really happy with Vizio sales and customer service.
Yes, it is risky to buy from a new comer. However, I did have problems with Dell, HP and Acer laptops so I will give them a try. So far, I love it.
Hopefully the admin will not block me again because I give candid comment on a product in comparison with Dell new XPS 15. -
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
Does that mean we can expect them in stores on Thursday, since Wednesday is July 4th? -
Sounds pretty sweet. I have a Vizio TV, and it's been worth every penny. I'd buy another one. I think they'll do well in customer service areas, especially in the early going. Congrats!
-
I'm not sure. If so I'll be one happy camper.
-
Pay attention about this. I don't know if it's the same for other countries but in Italy, if you are a VAT Number Owner (you are a selfmade professionist, i mean, not employee) then you don't pay VAT for tools that you need for your profession.
On italian business Dell site all prices are without VAT (21% here in Italy). VAT is a tax that goes to local country not to DELL. -
@Bill ... Thanks for replying to my previous post . Any updates on xps 15 release date in india ?

Where were you able to get this vizio already? All I can see is that they ship on July 15.
-
Is this mean, I could be able to add 1768GB storage?
-
I'd buy it immediately!
Maybe ask if they can buy 2 and I'll send you the money!

The business site laptop does not come with accidental damage protection, no lojack, and no blu ray software. These items may or may not be worth 300 dollars to you.
-
I think I will buy if it has even 20% off.... but since their screen is actually not that good and it will have a better screen to come with W8, I will wait until then. I really want to change to Win8 with my new computer. But my target is at least 20% off, it is too expensive to me. I was waiting to renew my 6-yr-old Dell inspiron 6000 for a while, but it is still working good when Dell launched L502x (I almost bought that), I was very eager to wait for ivy bridge. Really so disappointed you killed XPS L502x line with nice screen and sound and downgraded to Inspiron SE. If I bought that, I feel like I am not upgrading. Anyway, I think I will buy XPS, but will sort of wait and see. I will not buy another brand, just for the spec and price, I really like Dell.
-
@Bill: I had already asked this once and i guess you went over the post by accident, so i am reposting again, i will be ordering the laptop as soon as you reply to this.
Hey guys, this question is for Bill or anyone else who knows something about this, I am living in India but my uncle is planning to come from the USA to India by the end of july so i thought of ordering the 1700 dollar XPS 15. I see that it has a premium warranty which covers liquid spills and accidental drops. I am aware that warranties can be transferred from USA to India but i would like to know if all the extra features of the warranty like liquid spill protection will also be transferred -
ADP and lojack is worth every penny to me bud. by the way l512x has an option to turn lojack on in the bios.

One question:
Does a SSD in the mSata slot run as fast as in the normal HDD slot?
Or do I have to get rid of the normal HDD and put a SSD in this place to get the full speed of the SSD? -
Can you take out the ODD and put in an SSD? Or are the sizes different? I forgot if that's been answered yet but I read something about 7mm and 9mm before
-
I guess it depends on the mSATA you use. Anandtech says that Crucial m4 mSATA has same performances as the Crucial m4 SSD (which is very good btw), I don't know about Samsung PM830 but maybe it's the same.

This question is for Bill.
Will Dell be offering the Inspiron 15 R special edition with a Blu-ray writer? According to the tech specs tab, it is supposed to be an option. However, it does not seem to be currently available.
Here is a quote from the website:
Blu-ray Disc RW (writes Blu-ray, DVD &CD)(optional)
I am looking at the Inspiron 15 R special edition because the XPS 15 does not have a Blu-ray writer available.
Will Dell be offering additional configuration options? I will not purchase a computer with a 5400 RPM hard drive, 7200 maybe. However, I would vastly prefer an SSD.
Amazingly, it is easier to custom configure an Apple then an Inspiron 15 R special edition or an XPS 15. What happened? -
Apple ships over from China almost every week so they can do those configs in the factory
-
Same problem in the Netherlands, it says optional Blu-ray, but you can't configure one.. I wonder how noone in the Dell-NL team can notice this. Earlier I asked one of them on chat if keyboard was backlit, or if it was possible to put it. No he said.. And Bill said he would eat his hat if it wasnt. Now I trust Bill more than these guys, so thats another pretty big fail on their part. Maybe I should check for vacancies @Dell
For me buying or not buying the Dell will depend on the screen. Its not IPS, but I expect atleast a very good screen for this price. First signals on this arnt so great.. But im still waiting on some good reviews from the respected sites.
I think however, that the second version of this laptop will probably kick @ss if they take all the criticism and work on the weak parts. Visually its a beauty.
So now i play the waiting game... once again. -
It just means you can either have an HDD with an mSATA or an SSD with mSATA not all three together.
-
Where is the information that the XPS 15 has a weak display coming from? I haven't seen anything concrete on this either way...
-
guys ordered the 15inch with the 512gb ssd. I assume this means I could put in my own mSATA later as the port would still be there?
-
Official specs for display are:
350 nits
60% gamut
500:1 contrast
Viewing angles are approximately 60°
Until now none serious review about screen, so maybe it's better to wait.

Hi Xnap,
It is possible to purchase Dell systems with student discounts that qualify for the Xbox 360 or a gift card, however it needs to be purchased through our Member Purchase Program (MPP) and not through Small Office or SMB. Customers also need to have a Edu e-mail address.
This option is also available online. The MPP Student Offer has been updated to allow customers a choice between the $200 Promo eGC and Xbox 360. We will honor the Xbox promo for customers if the system is not a "Ships Fast" system and the price must be above $699 after discount.
This information is for US resident sales only. For regions and countries outside the US, please call our sales representatives or contact an MPP representative in your region.
Thanks,

Just ordered an XPS 15 with 750Gb 7200pm + 32Gb msata... couldn't wait cause my old M1530 just broke and I'm using a temporary replacement
Dell's site tells me I'll have it by the end of the month..
hope sooner! -
Okay but by purchasing the i7 config from the mpp it's $1670 as opposed to the 1400 on the business side. With the money you save you could buy an Xbox and then some. :/ -
Sad, isn't it? Never thought I'd see the day that Apple of all companies would offer more options than Dell. I agree though, I would not purchase a 5400rpm drive. At least with a 7200rpm I can use it as a fast external drive after I swap it with an SSD.
21%? Damn that's rough.
Probably not. It's not really the price that irks me (although the performance/price ratio is pretty lackluster). It's the lack of customization (no option for SSD only, no option to remove Blu-ray, etc) and the use of outdated, inferior parts like the slow hard drive and the screen that is (from early reviews) very average for a supposed "premium" notebook.
Definitely would like to see some in depth reviews though. Having only 1 fan seems like an overheating problem waiting to happen. -
There are currently no plans to offer the 15 in India. I did ask and passed along the desire from at least 3 posters on this thread to have the option. Sorry, my friend.
Sorry, I did accidentally skip over this one. I saw it originally and fully intended to address. Warranties can transfer from region to region, however some characteristics of a warranty in one country may not be offered in another.
There is a caveat. If you move a system from one country to another, we may not offer that system or some of the components in the new country. If we don't sell it, we don't support it. You may run into situations where you need a new motherboard, but if we don't offer that system for sale in your country, we don't have a motherboard in country that we could dispatch to you if we wanted to (and we'd want to if we could).
The PM830 is in the same ballpark as the m4, if not slightly faster in at least some tests Anandtech did. The Plextor M3 is also one to look at. Of the 3, I think I'd personally go with the Sammy.
AnandTech - The Plextor M3 (256GB) Review
Started an email chain about this after seeing your post. Will post back results of the internal discussion as they become available. Thanks for pointing this out. You are in the US, right?
I'll have to start a new email chain for XPS in NL similar to the one I mentioned above. I already got the North America team looking at the options and product page. I think this is going to turn into a discussion with all regions, and it may take some time. Please bear with me.
Thanks, Lorna! (<-did I mention how awesome she is yet?) -
Yes, and maybe it could become 23% by October, if the Government will not find enough money by cutting the expenses...
/END Political OT
In every case, in Europe a VAT of about 20% is diffused in nearly all Countries, if not all... some exceptions are France (19.5% IIRC) and Germany (19%). In Sweden or Finland, can't remember now, it's about 25%... Different kind of taxes... -
Off topic: VAT was 15% in the UK before rising to 17.5% which was to fund the EU. It's now 20% to help reduce the deficit. If VAT and other taxes were actually paid by the citizens of certain EU countries, the Euro-zone wouldn't be in such a state now
Back to consumer electronics, although prices in the US appear cheaper on a dollar/pound conversion, US prices often exclude the VAT so it can be misleading.

Yeesh. And people here complain of 5% total sales tax, and 25% total income tax.
Anyone from Canada have their system shipped? I ordered on the 29th (Friday), and the status is still in production. Should I expect to wait a while? -
Re asking this question to Bill as I think it might have been missed:
Also still curious why the UK site says:
"Always have a front row seat.
Experience your favorite movies, music and streaming video at home or on-the-go with premium sound and an optional built-in Blu-ray Disc drive."
When not a single SKU on home or business side offer the BR-ODD. -
Try 20% VAT, 21% income tax and 9% National Insurance (income tax in all but name)! Not forgetting taxes when you save, die or inherit. And still they don't have enough money!!
Doesn't your Dell order status show an ETA? Mine does - 17th July. :-(

Good to know we have more options! But there's a problem about the Sammy: it seems to be sold only OEM, but it's not possible to choose it during configuration
Any plan to give us the options?
Same problem also in Italy: they say no backlit keyboard and no blu-ray, even though there actually is a configuration (just one) with blu-ray in the business site (but only there). Could you possibly start a chain also for Italy please?
