Yes they often exclude sales tax, but that's on a state basis. Not sure what the highest state tax is, but nowhere near 20%. It's about 6.5% in my state. I know living in Switzerland for a while, all electronics were ridiculously expensive. My German & Swiss friends were always happy when I would bring electronic gifts after visiting family in the states.

Then there's the fact that you can buy on Amazon and pay 0% sales tax :D Italy has an Amazon similar to Germany's amazon.de don't you? Is stuff not any cheaper on there?

    /end tax talk

Why are there no reviews on the XPS 15 on any major sites yet?

XPS still too new to be reviewed I guess!

As for Amazon, they're very slightly cheaper on a lot of things but still subject to the UK 20% VAT.

Tax loop holes are closing faster than shops and factories over here!

This is becoming a huge task, and I'm concurrently escalating this as a process improvement (loooonnnnggg story) suggestion. In the meantime, I have to keep chasing down every single instance of mismatched product description pages (PD pages in the biz) in every single region I find. Not fun.

For now, to all reading this post, I'll just go with one of the suggested changes to the PD pages from one of my teammates:

"Availability varies by region or country." (<-This will be my keyboard macro for every time I get this question.)

I love Dell but I have to say the sales reps leave a lot to be desired. They generally seem to be based in India for a start. This is not a slight on our Indian cousins, but there are certain things lost in translation and their product knowledge is generally quite poor.

For example, in the UK I noticed all the XPS listed under the home section had the built-in WWAN option (and by association, the leather lid) - which I don't want. So I enquired whether any of the aluminium lid versions were available, without the WWAN option. I was told no, that is all they have.

On clicking the link to the business section, I found exactly what I was looking for. Why didn't the rep know this?

The misinformation on the websites is just some IT geek who's changed the photo and the name and left pretty much everything else as it was, by the looks of things.

Bill... you need to kick these morons into touch!

I didn't see anything about this on the last couple pages, but best buy has opened up online ordering for those who are waiting for that sort of thing.

    xps - Best Buy

Still showing no stock in local stores. Just site to store shipping 5-7 days.
I really, really want to play with one in person.

I asked a rep at microcenter locally about when they might be getting the new xps's in, but he told me that individual stores have no idea when stock is coming. Apparently corporate orders from dell, doesn't tell stores, and they just show up unannounced.

Thanks for the information! I wish the promo would apply to small business :( That $1399 XPS price tag looks a lot better than the $1699 one in MPP/Student
    Bill is right, you're awesome
Yeah! Wish it was closer to 1400 on the Student site, it's too expensive and doesn't even offer a high capacity ssd. For about 400 more, I can get a MBP with rd and get $100 gc.
Really hope Dell drops the prices on the XPS soon or offer that magical 30% off coupon
I complain about the 8.875% sales tax in NYC. We have to pay it on everything even Amazon! :(
And I got to school in Houston, which has a 8.25% sales tax so I don't save much either. Amazon just recently started charging sales tax in TX too! GRRR

Yeah the chat reps are usually pretty bad. It's rare but you can occasionally get a really good one or a US based on in the business section or in the purchasing section. Other general question are outsourced reps who take forever to type and answer question, they always have to look at the manual or ask their manager who then have to ask their supervisors and then some.

The call centers are bad too. One rep left me on the line for 10 minutes when she said she was going to transfer me. I heard all the other call center reps conversation, sounded like a hot chatty room in India.

But if you are lucky enough to get disconnect via chat, there's a survey for you to fill out and you can get a call back from a US based manager and they are really good. I got one yesterday and my order was done in no time and with no hassles. The chat took over a hour with no results while that call back took at most half an hour because I had a lot of questions and confirming addresses and whatever.
I wish! But I don't think Dell's shipping department is that bad...Unless we get Bill to get in there and send some "mislabeled" packages to us :D

Sooooo are you saying you placed your order? Did they give you a delivery date?

I am still waiting for someone from Rev's team to get back to me. I was told that I would hear something from them before the end of the day...... that was Monday.

I know they are really busy and are still figuring this out as most of the sources, (i.e. chat, rep or call center) do not have the same information which is frustrating from a customer point of view.

In the end, I hope they are able to clear this up in the next week and begin to offer the kind of deals we are all hoping for :D

@Bill: Since you replied to the above poster that the dell xps 15 will not be launched in India, the warranty i will be transferring will be useles? If that is the case, can i get a discount seeing that I am not getting even the basic warranty when i am entitled to premium warranty?

Depends how you look at it. From a design & build quality perspective, it's good value for money vs the MacBook Pro - which it is competing with.

I guess you could ask for a discount, but I don't think you can convince anyone of the "entitlement" piece, since we never offered the system for sale in India. Never hurts to ask, though.

On the warranty question, let me do some more fact checking. There may be some way to work around the "not sold in your country" problem. If there is, it may be complicated. I'll check. Lorna may even know.

    Hi together,

hopefully my XPS 15 will arrive tomorrow (and I hope that it'll has the german backlit keyboard) and I've got a question concerning the 32Gb mSata ssd. Is this a special ssd and if I want to replace it, will a ssd like the Samsung 830 Series 256GB fit in the chassis?

PS: Sorry if this question was already answered, but I think it's impossible to read all the 500+ pages...

    Hi,

You cannot easily exchange the mSata SSD as it is no standard drive. I found some mSata drivers which are very expensive and I do not know if you can exchange it nicely. But the OCZ Nocti looks not bad and has a reasonable price. Apart from that the HDD is a standard 9,5mm drive which could be exchanged by any standard SSD:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...512x-review-almost-perfect-6.html#post8652641

Please post some information of your (german) XPS as soon as you have received it. A PM would be nice to make sure that I do not miss the post. Btw. there is also a "owners thread already":

Ya after ordering online, When the rep call , I suggest friends negotiate for offers. And I will also say i won't buy if you give more offers
    I got Targus bag free

If you make an online order and on the service rep's call it was cancelled then its bad fore service rep's reputation

The Warranty was covered and i got some replacement too.

    P.S

The 15z[old] and 14z comes with 3 year accidental care warranty as standard option at Dell Indian Site

Hello everyone, I am from India and I know this may be the wrong thread to ask this question but I have tried many other forums and have got no response from there.
    Hope you guys can help.

I have got a query regarding the Dell inspiron 17r SE.
As some of you may know that Dell India is offering only 2 models.
One with the Base config. for 64k(~1100$) and the other with the best config for 95k(~1600$).
I really can't afford that much.
My query is that should I go with the Base model or not?
    Here are the specs
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

Is the 1600x900 resolution good enough for a 17" screen?
And I guess the GPU will be of 90W since its the i5 processor so will it be slower as compared to the 130W GPU offered with the i7?
I may live without the backlit keyboard(I'll buy a gaming keyboard later).
    What should I do?

Hey Bill, needless to say you are doing a fantastic Job!!
I may have a similar query, but this time it concerns the Dell Inspiron 17r SE(Which is available in India).
I live in India and I am planning to buy a dell inspiron 17r Special Edition laptop through Dell US since the price difference is almost 30K.(~600$)
    The situation is as follows.

I have a friend who lives in the US.He is going to buy the laptop from dell.com and then bring it to India.
So my query is that if he buys from dell US and brings the laptop to India, will there be any issues in the case of warranty or any other issue?
Will DELL Accidental Damage protection be valid in India?
I would be very glad if anyone can please give some details about any issues over warranty or any other issues which can occur?
Do I have purchase any international warranty?
Any help will be greatly acknowledged.
    Thank you.
P.S.- I really do not want to buy the base model from India(see above post) as I can get a much better specs for the same amount of money if I buy from US.

Nope I only bought a $250 gift card for $225. It took an hour on chat and half an hour over the phone but I'm satisfied that worked.

I didn't buy the XPS 15 yet. Still waiting for a good deal and for my gift card to arrive first.

AnandTech - Acer Aspire V3-571G-9435: The Value Proposition

Here are some results from an Acer laptop with the GDDR3 640M and a 3610QM. (The GDDR5 version from the XPS 15 is supposedly more in line with the GDDR3 650M which is used in the clevo listed on the chart.)

Anyway, just to give another clue what performance might be like.

Cheaper of course but still have to pay sales tax. That is to the tune of 91 bucks. To dodge that you have to purchase from somewhere that doesn't have a brick and mortar store in your state.

Ok guys, GOOD NEWS! Here in Italy Dell Reps have always said by chat and by phone that there's no backlit keyboard, BUT one member in another italian forum just told me that he received his XPS 15 today and it does have the backlit keyboard. So Bill was right and reps were wrong about this! At this point, I think it will be the same in the other countries with this "problem"!

I've been on is forum for the past 2-3 weeks and people have been using me as their trustee for releasing information for when it is available in the stores, how much it'd cost, and when I bought it. Along with arrival time. Go to the leap frog forum if this stuff is too complicated for you.

With tax and two day shipping I still got it cheaper than I would at dell.

My estimated delivery for the xps 15 base model is 7/9 with NBD but looking at dell's website it says if you order one now it ships out the next day. Hmmm...

So we're stuck with the 2,1 processor and maximum 8gb ram for how long? I haven't made my mind up yet, the mbpr has a 2,3 or 2,6 processor and better screen. I plan to buy a new laptop within 2 months so I hope in the mean time the possibility will come to upgrade some components.

Dell's ETAs are just the maximum date they expect it to be. My ETA was 17th July but it shipped this morning and will arrive this Friday :)
