    Hi Bill,

:p Of course I do want to see a machine with similar specs AND premium quality + great screen as we would expect from Dell. I am a bit sad that you probably cannot say anything about that :-/ Would be good to know if it would be worth waiting for an announcement.

Seriously? I can't even start counting how much times he says the product is definately worth the wait and that it will be a great option compared to what competitors have to offer and how this is a truly ground-breaking product (he compared it to the M1330 and the Studio16) and how it is one of the best XPS laptops to come out of their shelves? How many times do you want him to repeat that???

    @ nicob
My question was about a product which might not have the specs of the "normal" 15" XPS. Acer and Gigabyte introduced a new class of "ultrabooks" (ULV + High Performance GPU) and I wanted to know if Dell has any plans to follow in this direction.#
This will be definitely be my last question to him and I really hope to get any hint what we can expect ;)

I have specifics at hand, but all I can say re: thermals is "It should not be an issue." Same for fan noise. It will be pretty quiet. Pretty sure the next gen XPS is a step above the M1330, and that you'd probably agree.

I would have to get the official talking points from my friends in PR, but I think it's documented we missed that toxic materials goal, along with everyone else. I could speculate a bit, but I'm wearing my work hat here. :)

Good question. I think I know the answer, but I'll double check and post back.

Harass away. I love this stuff. I generally "crowdsource" the questions that have already been answered to you guys to re-answer.

Must shower up and head into the office now. My org has the option to take summer hours and leave at 2 PM on Fridays. I have not been able to take advantage yet, but I aim to today. If you see me on after 2 PM, CST, I will be wearing a frown.

Damn, okay. That's too bad but you guys are doing well, considering.

As I said before, most people think Apple is really Eco-friendly--but they aren't! I hope your higher ups haven't forgotten about all the consumers that care about the environment; you guys should definitely consider marketing your green status more. For example a little box on the products description could tell consumers about the Eco-friendliness of that product and could tout your 2nd place status with Greenpeace. ;)

For anybody wondering what the thermals of the M1330 are, here they are:

Review Dell XPS M1330 Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
Max temperatures at 38.2 degrees celsius, which, considering the hardware, would be extremely low. If the XPS 15 is below that, I am absolutely sold.

Fan noise maxes out at 47.2 db on furmark, so hopefully it's not that loud, but if we have any indications, it won't be. :D

Bill - Thanks for the reply. I just wanted a basic idea of what I was in for, so that's good news :)

1330 could get loud when hot, but it generally didn't make much sound if all you were doing was web browsing or using a word processor. Often times, the fan didn't even run on mine (and yes, I had the newest BIOS). Some of the new ultrabooks get fairly noticeable in the noise department just doing that. Also my 1330's fan noise, at least, was mostly a lower-pitched sound than I'm hearing out of the ultrabooks so far. It was a great laptop to use on a daily basis.

If you have questions, it's best to first read through the thread in case something has been posted already. Only a few pages back someone posted this - http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...ell-xps-l521x-ivy-bridge-114.html#post8591646. As you can see in the screenshot, we don't know what the gamut will be yet.

    Hey Bill_B!

I bought a XPS 17 less than 2 months ago. Are the new XPS 17 versions going to be such a big improvement? Are you reducing the general thickness of the laptop case? (the height actually) any info on the specs? Weight going down?

How is it behaving regarding temperature?

I hope you can answer all these questions! Thanks a lot Bill_B

Dell may or may not discontinue the 17 inch. I assume they won't so if the 15 will be a major redesign with thickness around .95in I assume the 17 inch will be similar.

This week Dell has sent me 2 coupons with 35% discount (that would be like US$600 less than without coupon) Bill tell me something about the new XPS that makes me wait for the new product that dell may or may not be preparing.

On the other hand, my major concerns about the hypotetical l521x are the battery life, and the temperature, and a strong gpu and cpu, and of course the price.

    Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone had a better idea about when this refresh might happen now?

Do you think they will just coincide it with Windows 8 release?

    Thanks in advance

I need an intervention. I'm so tempted to buy the 15" Envy with the 33% off coupon ... but I so badly want the XPS refresh. Help me! I swore of HPs years ago and really would rather own an XPS ... but it's sooo tempting ...

I am very surprised that Dell has not got a teaser page for the new XPS models so close to launch. They could have a lot of potential customers drooling already. There is literally no mention of it on the website, where is the Dell pimp?

I just sold my Envy 15 3040nr. I liked it, it was a very solid laptop and looked really nice. I had zero mechanical issues with it. I wasn't that impressed with the gpu, but the new version has corrected that. The color issue was present with the lcd. Side by side with my 13" macbook pro it was clear as day, reds looked slightly orange. Staring at the screen by itself, I never thought about it again. Diablo blood looked red enough to me.

Bottom line... If your like me and you buy the the New Envy, you'll probably have buyers remorse when the new XPS 15 launches(or in my case the mbp 15) and lust after it for months until you inevitably craigslist the old and go with the new.

If you have specific questions about the new Envy, check out the thread in the HP lounge, a few of them there should be getting theres soon.

no specs or anything too revealing. i think it would generate lots of interest for those unaware.

I feel kind of worried of this new XPS version... If there's a 17" version and it's thinner, with better cooling/power consumptions and better cpus/gpus... I will regret the purchase of my 2 months old XPS 17 : (

You may have the last version of the XPS 17 that Dell will ever produce. To date, an XPS 13, 14 and 15 have been manufactured, photographed and pictured, respectively. Not once has a 17 model been mentioned anywhere. Though they may bring that out later this year. We just don't know.

I dont know why bill thinks his theoretical machine is better than the competitions. I'd gladly take a 15 inch Samsung Series 9 with ivy bridge for .58 inches thick and 3.5 lbs & 1600 by 900 res over a theoretical dell which may or may not be .95 inches thick with similar specs.

Series 9 uses mSATA rather than SATA (SATA = more purchase options and higher performance), lacks a discrete GPU (which the 15 has), has a lower-resolution screen (900 vs 1080 of the 15), and it appears as though (from earlier discussion in the thread) the XPS 15 will be using standard-voltage CPUs (which are faster than the ULV the S9 uses). So, where are you getting "similar specs"? From what we have seen so far even the XPS 14 appears to have higher specs, in terms of overall power/speed, than the Series 9 you linked to.

I actually think it's advantage, provided it is used widely, for the laptop to be a bit thicker. It allows for a less obnoxious and more efficient cooling solution and full size ports.

Just as Intarweb said, you are comparing two machines that are in different categories. We know you love the Series 9 by your name but to compare it to a multimedia laptop with much higher power is silly.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that this is the initial release of the L521x. Just as they did with the L501x, which ultimately became the L502x, there will undoubtedly be additions and improvements made to the L521x over time. The only mainstay will be the chassis, which I'll bet lasts until summer 2014.

In other words, they may only come out with an WLED 1080p screen now, but later this year, with the release of W8, they may have an B+RGLED multi-touch panel with more discrete GPU options, etc. I realize that doesn't help those who want to buy now, but if you can wait, the specs will only get better. They have in the past.
