Bill should get a referral bonus for all of us that eventually will buy a DELL.
He's the sole reason I haven't bought anything yet.
-
Bill, don't know if this question was answered. Will a normal size 2.5" SSD fit into this thin laptop and will users be able to swap out the HDD?
-
Yup, has been asked a ton of times and will fit.
Users will be able to swap the HDD out using the teardownguides that will be on the website on the supposed launchdate of a supposed device that might or might not exist. -
Can someone provide with a link to the latest video or pictures of this new dell please?
-
At the moment, I'm only considering the XPS 15, one of the new Gigabyte or Vizio laptops, or the Sony Vaio, in that order
Bill, we should definitely be able to reference you as commission for these sales, I might be jumping on one of those or even an HP/Samsung if I hadn't found this thread!
-
Dell just sent me an email with XPS in the subject line. Totally fooled me. Links to 2011 models
-
I might do the same, the machines from the video a few posts ago look niceeee but im just worried they might throttle cause they are so thin (which i LIKE
(I mean the thinness part not the throttleing lolol)) or the gpu might be gimped.... a bad screen would also kill the deal
-
If I acknowledge it went back up, I would be conflicting with my response to the next quote...
Emails flying already. We will work to get that obviously erroneous information removed. The specs in the last 2 columns do not match currently shipping models.....hurry and go study, boys.
Define similar. Specs- possibly. Styling and apparent build quality- not a chance. Don't want to competitor bash, because their pricing looks good. So value-wise the Gigabyte looks pretty good.
I got $5 that says you ship that Envy back. (I have 2 really good friends at HP who'd be a bit sorry to hear me say that, but I keeps it real.) -
ooo this stuff just got real
. Idk if ill take that bet lol, Im just worried about the throttling/heat issues, if u get the chance can u run gpu/cpu intensive benchmarks? That would be a major point in me not switching. also, I know its a premium product so its going to be pretty expensive but I capitalized on the 33% off deal so i got nice specs for my budget of $1.5k, i7 3720, fhd, 7750m, 8 gb etc... will the xps come close to the same price?
-
link please to the latest video or pics of the IB dell?
-
Here's the pictures for you.
After finding this thread months ago, Bill is the only reason I haven't purchased anything yet. Still waiting (not as patiently Bill).
-
Can't talk price, but I'll run some Furmark and try to post a cryptic answer.
-
Bill, do you believe the "new XPS 15" to be the best/one of the best hypothetical products that dell has ever shipped/sold?
-
Lol Elands you might be better off putting them in your signature, everybody keeps asking for em
-
thanks for that
-
I'm definitely interested in the cooling (and, in particular, noise) situation on the XPS 14.
Bill, your comment earlier about 'erroneous' information on the "Help Me Choose: Display" page - did you mean to imply that the brightness will be less than what is listed there? -
Dang it looks beautiful, at the moment I'm looking at the thinkpad s430 which has a thunderbolt port which may be useful in the future. Will the dell have a TB port?
-
And done, problem solved.
-
Oh, also, any news on that teaser page you wanted to put up?
-
I can confidently say yes to that, if the product actually existed. It may be the best consumer box we've ever shipped, relative to the market. XPS 1330 was pretty strong in its day if you could tolerate the high skin temps. Studio XPS 16xx was pretty ground breaking for Dell as well, but it had some issues.
The erroneous comment related to how those are not specs for any currently shipping product. If it were related to any speculated, supposed system that we may be on the verge of launching, I would not acknowledge same.
Talks rage on. My peers in PR and my boss are on board, but they have to convince the powers that be it's a good idea.
Out for the day. Family time commencing in 5, 4, 3... Take care, all. -
continue fighting for it! and cya tmrw

L521X and L421X are now official on Dell support website. No manuals or spec yet.
-
Hey guys, this post is going to be a bit off topic but I hope you will forgive me.
I doubt I will be in the market for the XPS15 when it comes out.
Simply because I haven't got that kind of money lying around for a laptop anytime soon.
Now if I look for ones that are in my budget it's basically the new Inspiron 15R SE lowest configuration or the current XPS 15 on highest configuration.
My budget is about 750€ which roughly translates to 8-900$ because of the way we get screwed over here (actual monetary value is about +1000$)
Which one would you guys recommend? Or should I get an entirely different laptop?
It might be important to know what kinds of usage I expect:
-Tons of webbrowsing
-Bringing it to school so not too big
-Minecraft, AC:Rev, etc
-Some Photoshop and MS Office
No need for ssd's or whatever, I'm wondering if I need the dedicated GPU and how much RAM.
Thanks! -
The new Inspiron SE will perform much better than an XPS15 with a GT540M. Although graphics switching isn't as advanced.
8GB RAM is absolutely more than enough, 4 is fine, and 6 would be plenty. The 7730M will also be fine for what you're doing. -
i would look at the 14se or xps 14 if you have to carry it all day and a ib i 7
and 8 gig ram should work -
Do you think the IB INTEL i5-3210M processor will be enough or do I need the i7?
-
Nice find! Any links for us please?
-
Not seeing any L521X or L421X. I second the request for a link.
-
Here here!! I'll third that request.
It's okay... it will live on forever in this picture
-
Good source to trace new models is to look for manuals (not downloads) on support site. Just search for some unfamiliar models. You will need to have some knowledge which are new models and which are not but it's not difficult. You can see new Vostro which are not released yet.
-
Best place to go to see the various service manuals :
support.dell.com - /support/edocs/systems/ -
Dell Manuals
Dell Manuals
Nothing actually posted yet though -
I did not see it under this link either.
-
New Vostro Manuals posted though... http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos3360/en/OM/om_en.pdf
-
On support site you can see the numbers before they release manuals or any other info
The new Vostros are 3360, 3460 and 3560 -
For playing minecraft, easily. Very few people actually NEED a quad core imo, especially when you have hyperthreading. There are few games that actually use four cores as well.
Unless you're doing video editing, it's probably not really necessary. If you can get the i7 of course, it would be nice. -
I think that having tear down guides and diagrams is something really cool that Dell does and you don't really see it in other companies. Much better than going into it with no idea.
-
I guess that quadcore is useful also if you use virtual machines on your pc.
-
Yeah, it's one of the key, stand-out things that they do to show they care
(No matter how corny that sounds... haha)
Another question for Bill: What are some of the things you guys currently do for the environment? I know about how your packing is mostly cardboard now (no styrofoam!), but is it recycled post-consumer? What about the materials used in the products themselves: toxic substances (Lead, PVC, Mercury, Arsenic), amount of materials used and manufacturing (Greenhouse gasses)?
I think any eco-friendly stuff pays off well anyways, especially for companies--the money saved, consumer satisfaction and their feelings of "doing the right thing". -
Hmm after looking at the teardown manuals, new 13inch Vostro has an integrated battery and is only .75 inches thick at 3.5 lbs. 14 inch vostro offers geforce 630M and 15 inch vostro offers 7670M.
Here's the breakdown.
H W D Weight Max Res
Vostro 3360 0.75 13.07 9.15 3.65 1366 x 768 Intel Graphics
Vostro 3460 1.18 13.6 9.6 4.91 1366 x 768 630M
Vostro 3560 1.27 14.76 10.19 5.66 1920 x 1080 7670M
If they've thinned up the Vostros, I'm even more curious about the XPS now
-
Supposed to be in the .95 inch range
-
Ataboy!
I kind of lost touch of what we're doing in sustainability since I left PR. I should at least know more about the packaging. Here are a few links.

Greenpeace ranks us high compared to our tech competitors, but that we have some work to do. Good on emissions and energy. Not so good on green products. I think the industry as a whole is struggling with the product side. -
Hi Bill, sorry to pepper you with questions but since I need a laptop soon(ish) and am kind of holding out longer than I should for the XPS, I've got questions!...
I noticed you mentioned you were going to test out the 15 for thermals. I'm wondering about the 14, since that's what I'm looking at. Wondering how the thermals are, but also noise overall. I know you can't give really specific impressions. I'm coming from an M1330 (it seems to have finally died
); how do you think I'll feel about the 14?
-
Have we seen anything about the system colors yet? One thing I didn't like about the L502X is that you could only get the bright silver color, unless you paid $80 or however much for an ugly "designer" cover (not sure if that was for the XPS though). It's not bad, it's just...meh, silver.
Edit: Specifically, I'm hoping for a matte black, or at least a darker shade of silver/grey. -
Well the Inspirion 15R SE just went to $1299 at Dell.com.au, up $200 from the price before...
So what now? I've been waiting for the XPS to come out, and if it doesnt by June 30th my fall back was the 15R SE. That is now $200 more and I cant see myself paying $200 more than it was for the first 3 or 4 weeks...
Honestly Dell couldnt make it any worse for its customers, no date on XPS and increase the price of the 15R which was an option for those waiting on XPS if it doesnt come by end of month.
Customers were basically going to gamble on the XPS coming out or taking a plunge on the 15R SE and hoping the XPS is not heaps better for only a little more $.
Annoyed. -
Hahahaha... you make me laugh
Thanks for those links, I read them over well---though I suppose I should appologize seeing as I probably could have just Googled them myself
. Sorry.
Anyways, You guys have a lot to be proud of; that's quite a feat to be named 2nd!! And you're only behind the lead by 0.8 points!! (And the list surprised me... The way Apple sensationalizes their green reports made me think they were 1st! Who would have known?--I don't think many people do... lots of smug hipsters with Apple products. Hahahaha)
In the Greenpeace report it mentions Dell's target to remove a few toxic materials from their products... do you happen to know if any of these goals have been met as of now? (I realize the report is nearing a year old) I guess I should mention I'm interested in basically just the XPS 15 that Dell may or may not have. Any details about it specifically or do you guys just have general info? If you don't it's no biggie. (Really... don't worry about it)
And finally I must express how impressed I am that you came here (This thread, that is. I don't think you logged on the computer just for me!) to answer my measly question at 10pm (If my calculations are correct)!! How do you possibly get any sleep? LOL. You better have some fun weekend activities planned; go have fun! And that's an order!
If you look a few pages back or so you can find several stills of the XPS in the leaked CNET video... I assume it will be very similar to the current XPS 13 ultrabook. No colours probably; it's a premium brand, not Inspiron candy! (Still love that ad by the way)
Hmmm... I still see an option for $899. EDIT: And even the top model only adds a better display and a Blu-ray reader for $200 (compared to the model right below it). Big deal, who even uses optical media any more?
Visiting the Dell website has reminded me: That condescending "Do you need help?!" box pops up right in the middle of the darn screen... can't it be on the edge or something? -
What of the 3760?
-
I can get a Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 with these specs (literally exactly what I want):
3rd generation Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor( 2.30GHz 6MB)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB
8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080
500GB 7200
Blu-ray /DVD Combo
for $1201 shipped. pretty much my hard limit for price
what do you guys think, compared to what the new XPS 15 will be?
I really like the look of those leaked/screenshot XPS 14 pictures, this Lenovo looks nice, but it's not super sexy or anything...
My last/current laptop is a crappy, slow, ugly looking and near-death Acer I got 4 years ago so anything is really gonna be an improvement... -
just got an email offering 40% off current XPS model 'while stocks last' so the new XPS can't be far away.
-
any coupon or link?
