That would be an ideal solution from the standpoint of making all consumers happy. However, the economic problem with two chassis options is that a manufacturer needs two separate toolings and has to stock an additional set of parts, leading to a substantial increase in costs. In the PC notebook market, price elasticity of demand is high, so raising base price to compensate for manufacturing costs may excessively cut demand. Furthermore, if the manufacturer chooses to impose the bulk of the costs on those who have the niche preference, in order to avoid a drop in sales on the main line, the manufacturer may lose the customers they sought out in the first place. So, there are some fairly strong incentives against accomodating niche preferences because the manufacturer may give up more sales than they ever would have gained, all while complicating logistics and increasing costs. That doesn't mean I can't see any value in having a numpad, or that I think people who want a numpad should be ignored. It just means that, realistically speaking, your options are very likely (nearly guaranteed) to be limited in terms of notebook models which accomodate this preference.
Aside from that, my main criticism of the keyboard here is the one I expressed in another thread. I find the key spacing and overall shape to be less than ideal, at least on the current XPS-Z line and the 13. Some other users have indicated to me that it works out OK in the long term, so I'm not exceedingly worried about it, but I would have liked something closer to maybe the Lenovo or HP designs.
-
ok good it just wasnt me for which it didnt look right... yeah i would rather a better keyboard design. as for the numberpad i want it but i realize what i would be giving up and its not worth the hassle to me
-
ask the dell designers lol ........... but yea the keyboard is ugly ...
i can live with the kb ..... graphics card ... sound quality screen quality and battery life are the main focus ....and it would be sad if dell slipped up in audio quality from the last gen XPS -
bill said sound quality is good.... for not having a subwoofer
-
lenovo / hp keyboards are good .... especially the y570 /580 the design of the new hp dv is also nice but i find the rounded ends kkinda wierd
yea sound quality is good but its not great
how is the sound in comparison to the outgoing model is the question
all in all i am liking this dell because its slim and looks good its just the specs i wanna see and read a review or 2 .... -
well he was basically implying not as good as current model cause they had to make it slimmer so no subwoofer etc.
-
I don't understand the design from an ergonomic perspective. The key spacing is unusually wide, the tactile response seems relatively low, and because of the layout more features are left to Fn+keystroke inputs than is really necessary. I wonder if Dell just had a bunch of leftover keyboards, or if this keyboard is particularly inexpensive to produce, and that's why we're seeing it again. Otherwise, I'm kind of baffled as to its inclusion. The Inspiron SE keyboard looks to be a step up in terms of design, so why not use that?
-
Do you guys know if there will be a XPS 17 model? I am getting worried that there will not be and that is what I am interested in. So far any leaked screenshots are highlighting the 14 and 15 inch models.
-
If you read back in this thread (even two pages back!), or looked at the L721X thread, you'd see that current speculation is that there will not be a new XPS 17 - at least, not one released alongside the 14 and 15. The Inspiron 17R SE appears to be taking its place for now.
-
my guess is no since even apple wants to drop the 17" model
if u get a 15" with a 1080p screen or higher resolution there is no need for a 17" since a 17" would be nice but some how i doubt it -

From all indications, there will NOT be an XPS 17. At least it won't be introduced any time soon. If Dell does decide to make one, it won't come out for several months. The fact that they have a nicely equipped Inspiron 17 means the XPS 17 is dead. -
As someone else noticed, lots of people look at the HP Envy as an alternative. Is there a reason why the Asus N65 isn't a better alternative? The specs are good ( ASUS N56VZ-DS71 15.6" Notebook. ASUS N56VZ-DS71) and the design also looks very nice.
-
ddr3 ram on gpu(which will kill performance at 1080p) , and its very thick compared to envy and xps, also inferior sound. I was actually considering it until i asw the ddr3 and the thickness. There is no advantage for having it
-
Complaints about warranty support from Asus have discouraged me from buying one of their laptops. Not sure about other people.
-
its nice ... but too heavy and i dont like the looks to be honest but the spec sheet is awesome and i hate the idea of an external subwoofer but it has better sound that way idk yet i dont trust asus an as im in the Caribbean my options all have support here

Watching Apple's WWDC right now... Really painful to hear all the lemmings in the audience. It's like a religious revival. It's like Jonestown all over again.
-
me too they are taking to long to get to the good stuff but im looking at a live blog where are u watching it ? link ? plz
-
They are discussing the MacBooks
-
Man I was just thinking this, I can just see the extortionate pricing before they announce the rumoured retina laptops. 768GB SSD rumoured and apple fanboys asking what the price will be, why don't they buy the SSDs themselves and put them in and pay half and get double speeds? I just don't get it...
RAM is also another gripe I have with apple, so overpriced when configuring systems.
EDIT: they just promoted "Combined USB2 and USB3 port" Are you kidding me... -
Apple shipping today!

Oh, Christ, they didn't even re-design the MBPs. They just stuck the new procs in there. How embarrassing. MBP 15 for $2,199? Does that come with or without the car insurance?
-
New MBP, very thin but not tapered. .71 inches 4.46lbs to be exact. 2880 x 1800 Retina Display.
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
Let's see what it costs. It's ridiculous. Look at the shape of that screen. It's not even widescreen anymore. Are we back to 2005 with square displays? And why do I need retina in my mail app. Why are they bragging about that?
-
Retina display.
-
Quad-core i7's and Kepler GT 650 graphics. 768 SSD and 7 hours of battery life.
-
its impressive full stop ............ apple just take my money
-
wait I wonder what changes they made to the imac
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
You're not even going to wait to hear the price, are you?
-
where is the info for mbp???????????
-
I think it looks great! Out of my price range, and I don't use MacOS, but props to Apple on the design. I'm glad the new MBP turned out to be as impressive as rumored. On the other side, maybe this will encourage the use of higher quality displays in PC notebooks
-
muffin man share where u watching!!!!!
-
Starting at $2,199.00 ummm.... Yup that's what i was expecting.
-
ok 2200 for the new MBP ......... apple u shall not be getting my money il be broke when yall done with me :/

This site is pissing me off it loading slowly in chrome and my post count got reset seriously and im back at nbe ???
-
oh god the specs look great but starting at 2.2k??? ty for link btw
-
Dell will match it (aside from the screen) for at least $700 cheaper.
-
haha yeah but its thinner+lighter and that screen i want
but not worth 2.2k
-
I don't see any point in getting the old MBP for 2200$, you get a better processor in exchange for a worse HDD (albeit bigger) and a display with half the pixels.
Impressive for sure, but still too expensive. I dunno if the 11 inch air can honestly compete (realistically) with the zenbook prime, if they have the same price. -
actually dell is now one generation behind apple, it will only match the update version, and even then it will be slower
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
It's officially called: MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
-
The new MBP has an ivy bridge i7 quad-core, which the Dell will have, GT 650M, which the Dell possibly will have and we still don't know if it's ddr3 or ddr5 not to mention it will max out at 1GB memory for it. The rest will also be the same except for the screen which I will be perfectly happy with a 1080p screen as I won't be doing photo or video editing.
-
Sorry for dumb question, but retina display on a laptop display means that if i want to play a 3D games at native resolution (in order to avoid bad graphics due to resize) i have to play it at 29XXpx X 19xxpx ??
A 650m will not be enough, i guess. -
I don't want retina, that's just crappier desktop performance. The thing has the same specs as the dell + 3mil pixels to render.
On another note, a lot of the new OS features seem to make windows 8 a lot less wild than people thought. -
the dells quad core is slower and there is no news of a gt 650m, not saying it ins´t a great computer, i will probably get one, just admiring the feats reached in the new macbook
-
lets see what ios 6 brings to the table
-
u can reduce res by a factor of 4 for games and it shouldnt blur
-
I agree it is a magnificent feat but for that price I'm not interested. I would like to see how it handles all that performance in a .71in thick chassis.
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
Actually, a lot of the features in Mountain Lion are features Windows 7 had and Windows 8 announced last year. This is Apple playing catch-up and still falling behind. -
thats what im wondering... how in t he world are they gonna dissipate that heat?
