    @Bill,

Hi there. I was wondering, will the upcoming XPS be using the same TN panel or will there be an upgrade option to, let say an IPS? :)

To be honest, I prefer higher contrast / gamut / viewing angle over high resolution anyday..

Bill, now that XPS notebooks are being used more often in enterprise environments, do you think there's a chance we'll see the next XPS 14/15 with an E-port connector?

I'm in need of a new notebook soon and I'm going to have to choose between a Latitude E6430, the new XPS 15 and the Precision M4700. The latter one is not out yet and I'm pretty sure the touchpad, keyboard and screen on the XPS 15 will be much better than the latitude. But no docking solution could be a deal breaker.

From the pictures we have of the 15 it looks that it won't have docking capabilities.

Thanks for that, Bill. I'm sorry if I've come across as arrogant at times. My passion for new technology has a way of bringing out alternate adjectives to describe what I'm feeling. And I apologize if my posting the pics and links was a big PR no-no. I figured somebody or some site was going to do it, and like I said, I'm just as curious as anyone.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date however you can. Your comments, advice and information on this board are greatly appreciated.

Well we pay £1.35 at the moment per liter of petrol to your 0.50p :(
I just know a lot of people that get fed up with tech companies screwing us over price wise, apple is one of the worst at it.

Was this price you are hinting at for the 15 or 14? if you could find some way to hint that would be great ;)

Hoping for a 1,000$ MSRP, otherwise my case might be a little shaky :O

I wish the Inspiron 15R SE had an Nvidia GPU. I would totally grab that if I could, but AMD graphics switching is so bad that I think I'd be getting a sager notebook of some kind. (And on that point, why does nobody offer the real GT640M? X.X) Which is of course not dell's fault.

The US Dell Outlet store is one of the best places to find good deals on products that have been out for a while. Many of the deals are on refurbished products, and a few are reduced as "Scratch & Dent". Occasionally, the outlet store will release its own set of coupons. Great coupons will get you 25% off already reduced refurbished prices (e.g., the current L502X 25% off right now with TM9QM5WVJW?518). Since the L502X is ending its life cycle, the coupons have been more frequent, and the stock is now exhausted.

More legendary coupons in the past have offered 30-40% off, but I haven't seen one of these in a long time and they're usually sent to individual customers for one-time use.

I bought my current Latitude E4300 completely kitted out in 2009 (2.4GHz Core 2 Duo; 4GB; 9-cell) with a 20% off outlet coupon... after tax it was $840.

As reference, xpbargains.com allows you to look at archives of old coupon deals. If you look at Dell Outlet Home/Business, it will give you a good idea of what's been offered in the past to help you recognize a good/rare coupon when it comes along.

the e-port is a proprietary dell connector wich allows to extend the laptop with a docking station, full of optional connectivity (double monitor out, extra usb... etc). It's mainly a business laptop feature.

the ODD is on the right side of the 15'' model, is a slot load drive (it's just a slot cut into the chassis)

The E-port is so you can connect it to a dock, it would almost be like a big bar on the bottom of the notebook.

The disc drive is on the 15 it is on the right side, make sure you are not looking at the 14 because it will not have an ODD.

If there is one, you have it about right.

I asked around, and no one in my immediate sphere knows anything about this question. I'll keep an ear out. I put out a feeler to my PR friends to ask around. I'll post back anything I hear.

1- Totally agree, but see above- I have no clue right now.
2- I do not have access to policy documents in other regions, but I strongly believe it's the same as the US. There is not one word in the web posted US warranty agreement that says you void your warranty if you open the case. Which claim are you referring to? Mine that you can open the case all you want, or some Dell reps' ludicrous claims that doing so voids your warranty?

I can't talk any specs whatsoever at this time. Sorry.

I can pretty much guarantee you pigs will fly before you see a true E-Dock connector on a consumer system.
Pfft. No need to apologize. I think everyone here pretty much knows that passion affects verbiage in a lot of cases.
Yeah, posting those pics is a PR no-no, but the good news is you are not to be blamed one scintilla. You don't work for Dell or any contractor of Dell...do you? lol. Don't answer that if you do.

I think I saw the UK pricing somewhere, but it's one of things I intentionally didn't commit to memory, since I can't discuss it.

That was just a figurative reference to a coupon that could be generally considered insanely generous. I'm not a bargain hunting expert, but there is a lot of good info in the preceding posts about it.

Bill, if there was an XPS 15 launching, would it be available via my EPP discount on launch? Also launch prices for UK, based on what has been said of $1100 USD, can we hope for a three figure launch price in the UK?

@risco: read the post just above yours, bill can't discuss pricing before the official release date.

@bill: my friend said he read every related document when he bought the alienware and that he can't change hardware without voiding the warranty. Maybe he didn't realize that the voiding is not implicit, if it's not written it's not valid. I know for a fact that he's very through and capable when it comes to legalese, but I' ve talked him into giving a second read of his warranty contract after your reply.

    Thanks

Bill can you tell us what the power draw of the new XPS 15 is going to be? I'm thinking in terms of watts from the wall. My sager is 180w which is insane when it comes to travel options. I'm hoping this one is more then 120w and less then 150w..... Can you confirm this?

I'm no lawyer, but I think most countries require a company to spell out in advance common reasons why a contract can be voided. If the warranty does not spell that out in clear language or legalese, I don't think we can void your warranty. I have seen crazy cases in the US where we "divorced a customer." That is in cases where we suspect fraud, or excessive harassment of our employees or the like. Even in those cases, we provide a prorated refund of the dollar amount corresponding to the amount of warranty time left on contract.
If we publicly post a manual that shows step by step, screw by screw how to disassemble and reassemble a PC, that could be construed in some courts as implicit support of my assertion that you can in fact tear that puppy down to your heart's content.

I cannot, but I'll say we are in your stated range.

Man I thought I was done with dell was about to buy the hp envy 6t or a macbook pro 15. All my laptops have been dell for the past 10 years almost every computer I buy is dell but the current xps is so ugly to me. I'm still on my xps 16 and I have maxed it out, undervolted and I could stick with it for another year but I mainly need battery life and I wanted something nicer.

And then I see this OMG. Its like the xps 16 reborn. Will buy first day don't even care for the review there is nothing else I want.

I just built out a 15" MBP for $2748 with the specs below. I'll just park this here and do the same exercise for a similar Dell on launch day if we have a competitive model soon to launch. :)

    4GB RAM
    2.3 GHz Quad Core i7
    256GB SSD
1080p (close as you can get to 1080 with MBP anyway since they use 16x10)
    3 years warranty

I wonder if I can even get an XPS up to $2700 without buying a 30" monitor. This is pretty amusing. MBP similar pricing to XPS. That's a good one. :)

@Bill: Is there a particular reason that dell decided to go with AMD graphics options in their non-XPS 15 inch computers?

Edit: And any idea if the GT630M in the Vostro 3460 is a kepler variant?

Double edit: I just saw a rumor for a 640m option. I know this isn't the vostro thread, btu this one is most active and bill is watching it. Hopefully you can answer since these have been announced? If so, IS there a 640m option?

In the UK I can get that configuration for £1,761,60 + Free £70 Gift Card with my Student Discount through my Uni.

Don't worry, I'm definitely getting the XPS but I'm just trying to make a case for Student Discounts here :) Is the "near $1100 base price for 15 or 14? Anyway you can hint? hehe.

I'm sure there's a reason. We can't single source all our GPU's. The decision process probably gets way into the details, and I'd have to have a good reason for asking.

We have a note out to engineering asking about Kepler/Fermi on that card. Will post back what I hear.

No 640 option on Vostro that I know of. 630 is the high end.

I cannot comment specifically on unreleased products, but in general, I don't believe any given system we launch in the near future does not do better in battery performance to some degree than its previous gen.

Alright, here's to hoping. 640 would be nice because I know it's kepler, but oh well. IF the 630M is kepler version, I am absolutely 100% sold on a dell product, whether its the expensivey nice XPS 15 or the Vostro, which also looks really nice. Even if it isn't, I'm probably sold anyways :p Sony's drivers suck and the Lenovo Y480 is really thick and kind of ugly.

On that note, do you own any of these, and what is your impression of it/them?

    (sorry for hijacking thread guys)

Hi guys! I join the discussion to ask a question: reading the previous posts it's (almost :) ) sure that the XPS 15 will sport a GeForce 630 or 640 GPU.. but what about the XPS 14?

Sorry if the question has already been posted but I can't find anything related.

BTW.. thank you Bill! I was almost sold on something else but you gave me the strenght to wait, as a proud owner of a 1530 XPS I'm sure it will be worth it :)

It is, but in actual fact, it's just identical price to the US if you straight convert it :( Just hoping these 14 inchers are a decent base price thats all :) Ideally cant be above £900 for my budget but I'm sure the prices are set in stone so just going to have to hope and pray :)

In addition to 640M LE, (Which I believe is only kepler btw) 630M DOES have a kepler variant according to notebookcheck.net.

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Edit: 640M LE does have fermi variants. But it does have kepler ones as well.

Double Edit: A GT630M with 28nm Kepler: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5936/computex-2012-show-floor-ultrabooks-with-discrete-gpus It isn't in the vostro (sadface) but this shows that it is definitely possible to have kepler 630M.

With all due respect, but this is not correct.

The lower end MBP with Retina comes with 8GB of RAM, and costs $2548 on Apple's website incl. 3 years support.

He wasn't configuring the retina he was configuring the low-end regular MBP. Hence the "as close to 1080p as a Mac can".

The only reason I can think of is the Retina comes stock with the 256GB SSD whereas the old MBP you would have to upgrade it to. Apparently it is cheaper for Apple to have it stock rather than upgrade from a regular HDD to an SSD.

The 675m is the highest upgrade available in the Alienware M17x. There isn't a chance in the known Dellian world that an XPS will have that as an option. 650m at best, and even then only later on in the year to possibly combat the new MBPs' configs. In the meantime, a 640m with GDDR5 is not too shabby.

At the risk of making Bill's life even more difficult (sorry Bill :(), I found some more photos. Granted, they're from the same Dell/Romania unveil from a few days ago, but they include some new angles of both the 14 and 15. Maybe some of you can get a better idea of viewing angles, panel quality, resolution, etc.
