if only I could get the 990mstupid macbook Pro V10 .3 in thick, retina display, liquid nitrogen cooling, a pentacore SkyNet intel i10 CPU its buried with steve jobs
-
Ha no way these things are gonna have a 680m as much as I wish.
-
I'm not a fan of the dGPU options listed on the 14.
-
Hi Bill...not sure if you can answer, but I thought I'd ask...
Will the XPS 14 be comparable to the recently announced Gigabyte U2442 ( http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4210#sp) in terms of graphical horsepower or should I be expecting a step below? (U2442V = i7 + GT640M (Kepler) / 14" LCD @ 1600x900) -
Please offer different colors from the standard boring bright silver. :[
-
Those new photos look gr8 I want it more even if it lacks a number pad I'm just worried about sound quality ...... the display look amazing as well
-
XPS is a professional item. Not a fan boy gamer item. If you want lights and stars get an Alienware. Silver and black are the best colors for standard laptops.
-
what are they for the 14?
-
According to the Romanian website: GT425/GT540M 2GB
-
oh i wouldnt trust those specs at all they put in first gen core i7 processors in that. from so far what i have read, there is no gpu options for it atm...
-
I have almost no clue what the screen is, but it looks like 1600x900 based on the recycle bin size. For documentation, a comparison photo.

So, 1600x900 it seems.
Source desktop for your toying
Let me redo the image... -
no thats def atleast 900p (might be more) im on a 1050p monitor right now (16:10) and thats about the same width of the win7 bar
-----
it might be 1080p... cause the desktop icons etc are smaller than my screen right now -
I see XPS 15 still carry optical drive, that mean the xps 15 will only have 1 fan in it, fail like the old one...
After I have purchased like 6+ dell systems, i found out most of them are fail on thermal design without well thought.
XPS 15 - fail
XPS 14- average
AW 14- WORST I ever paid for that much (although I returned it)
studio XPS 16 - Very bad hot like in hell.
BUT, M4600 surprise me A LOT, it's epic awesome system without good stylish. I'm currently still using it -
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
Wow. When did you get back? I was always told it's a one-way trip.
-
HAHAHA
I had to re-read it a couple times cause I missed it!
-
Hi Bill, I got the idea to disable turboboost while gaming here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/590543-xps-l502x-turbo-boost-2-0-a.html#
This reduces temps while gaming and during video conversion from 97-98C to 80-85C -
I don't appreciate your close to personal attacks or the tone of some of your posts, I disagree with Bill that you deserve more reps, if I could give you -1 rep, I would. Don't pretend to know me enough to make any assumptions about me.
-
honestly i dont think he was making any personal attacks... he was just going with the info u gave him and he listed ur options, I would probably have said the same thing lol and I wouldnt be saying it with the intent of "attacking" u
but if it was... well bad mr muffin man -
How could that be considered an attack? He simply said that you shouldn't feel scared from a technician (which is true). If they made you feel scared then there is a problem and you should inform Dell so they can fix it. If (key word if) you are just scared of people you don't know touching your things then this isn't Dell's problem. Everything he said was right and he wasn't attacking you at all.
Back on topic, the new pics look really nice. I'm really happy about the slot load drive as I have a large collection of Blu-Rays that I want to be able to watch. This will be my first time buying a laptop and I have been hanging out for a couple months for the release of the new XPS. Bill has kept me from buying an Envy or Vaio S15. Thanks again for all your posts Bill. -
UGH!!!! Why are the keyboard buttons so ugly???? I like last year's keyboard buttons on the XPS 15 and 17 better. These keyboard buttons look like they were derived from the XPS 15z. Also not a huge fan of the buttonless touchpad. I much prefer to have 2 buttons for the touchpad since I know those integrated touchpads are too sensitive for my taste. Not a good move IMO.
The only thing I do like in the images is the fact that Dell appears to be going for the slot DVD drive for the XPS series as oppose to the tray DVD drive from last year. -
Well I didn't appreciate the comment or how it was put!
I've had a pretty bad experience with tech's that have come out to me across 3 different machines, but I didn't come here to complain about the service I have experienced, I came here to talk about the new XPS 15 and to see if I want one, so back to it
-
Long time lurker here, finally decided to make my account. I have to jump in and say...am I the only one that is bummed that the 14z won't have an optical drive? I'm still nowhere near ready to ditch optical storage and use my cd drive regularly for installations as well as music. I was hoping to get the 14z for my sister as she goes off to med school but an optical drive was a requirement (by her school). She doesn't want anything in the 15" range either... :/
-
I just noticed that the touchpad has a line separating the integrated buttons. That makes me sad, I was really hoping for a hingless touchpad like those found on Macbook Pros and new Synaptics touchpads.
Its very seldom that most people would need an optical drive while on the go. They make inexpensive external optical drives that you can use if you really need one. They are small enough to fit in a bag and don't require additional power beyond USB. I bought one for my last laptop which was an HP Envy 15 that didn't have an optical drive. I thought it would be an inconvenience but I didn't mind it at all.
Here is an example: Newegg.com - SAMSUNG USB 2.0 Slim External DVD Writer Model SE-208AB/TSBS -
could any one tell its release date and its basline price for India
-
March 2013
-
No backlit keyboard in KPS 15?? If yes, will it be available in every country?? In Italy it's not available for the current L502x
-
it's just a painted line, to give a visual indication of the buttons. I think it'll be very similar to the one found on mbp in form, if not in function.
EDIT: to whom it may concern:
sony just kicked off its back to school offer, free ps3 160Gb/psp vita wifi with eligible vaio computers
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/12/sony-playstation-back-to-school/ -
I also hope that Dell will bring a similar machine. Specs of the Gigabyte look near perfect for me but from CeBit was reported that screen and built quality was quite bad. Let's see...
Btw.:
If the 14z comes with a new ULV i7 (which are pretty fast) + GT640M and the XPS 15 comes with i7 + 650m I would expect the 14z to have at least the same frame rates because of the FullHD display (ca. 33% more pixels) of the XPS 15 but maybe double the TDP
-
the 14'' will almost certainly have a better cpu, or at least a configurable upgrade. As for the video card, we can only speculate: I'd expect a similar (or better ) level of power from the 15'', and something very close to that from the 14
-
Right, but keep in mind that the icons can be made bigger or smaller. Use the icon names or the windows bar at the bottom of the screen. All these factors can be affected if DPI scaling is set.
-
Fair enough. I'll compare task bars later.
-
both the bar and the font size are affected by dpi scaling, but I doubt Dell changed it anyway. I'm with AMDPhenomx4 on the resolution, I believe it'll be 1600*900
-
Does anyone know if a 1920x1080 14" exists? It would be nice if there was such an option for the XPS 14.
There are 13" FHD displays, but I am not sure if there are 14" displays. I would immediately buy a 3.3 lbs machine with a 14" FHD IPS display... -
Except the default DPI on a 1080p notebook display is 125%...
-
Actually on the VAIO Z default is 100%, and ive kept it that way.
-
Do we already know if the 14 inch will have a ULV or full voltage processor? I think it has been pretty much confirmed by the Dell blog post and Bill that the 15 inch will have full voltage. Can't find anything about the 14 inch though.
-
I think since the XPS14 is listed as an ultrabook, it will have ULV processors, I believe (not 100% but pretty sure) ULV is a part of the ultrabook requirements.
-
True. Or, at least, this was true in the current generation of XPSes, all the model that ships w/ FullHD display has the DPI scaling factor set to 125%.
-
Damn, I was hoping for a full voltage processor. Might have to reconsider my options now.
-
You are correct...here is the list of what it takes to be an ultra book from Wikipedia
Ultrabook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -
yea it is no optical drive probably a 630m or 640m GPU
but i like the look of it better as it lacks the huge amount of space on the side of the keyboard like the 15 has but it supposed to have a 2.1 JBL sound system from what i saw in one of the images -
Any possibility it will include a thunderbolt?
Well, interest on external graphic card thru thunderbolt connection is on the rise.
-
It is really strange .... if the XPS 14 has no optical drive it might have better cooling (dual fan system without optical drive) and same framerates in games as we could possibly expect considering the thoughts which I have posted before. As it loooks the new i7 U won't be to slow to keep the 640M busy anyway.
-
i doubt it since there are not alot of devices that use it on the windows platform and only apple is really pushing the thunderbolt port thing ...... + i think its still limited on the Pc side of things in terms of what it can do
-
ive got a question for you bill. ive just bought the inspiron 17r special edition and i believe it to have close to the new gens specs inside, it has a 650m and the such. im very very happy with the laptop but i would of liked more oomph in the gfx department ( though there isnt a driver released yet) and a little bettter design. got 3 questions for you
if i was to get a new xps 17 when it comes out would it be an upgrade to my inspiron or just similar.
when will the drver supporting the 650m be released ( this i know you can answer)
can i upgrade the gfx card in my inspiron like you can in alienware and xps ? -
i know its directed at bill but if u read higher up in the thread there is no vostro 17 or XPS 17 in the pipeline that's y the Inspiron 17SE was built with XPS like specs + some other features as a catch all for XPS 17 and Vostro 17 customers who would miss the lack of such models so i guess u will have to wait on a driver update
-
Well. Um. <spacer>
-
any one else think dell could have worked a 4th usb into the XPS 15?
-
I'll say one thing for sure, I'll be massively disappointed if this doesn't come with a 650M, I don't think the 640M will quite cut it for me.
-
Honestly for me three is more than enough...i can't think of a time in the past year i have even had more than two plugged in at the same time...
Webcam built in
Bluetooth mouse
Printer on the network
I just plug in external hard drives...
