It's OK downlinx. We learned something new today - there are less fortunate people than Anericans,Canadians and Australians, lol.
I'll check it out immediately.
On the bright side, imagine how much cheaper the XPS will seem to us after this when the real prices are announced, roflmao
-
You may want to consider buying from the US Dell website and forwarding it onto Australia. That's what I'll be doing. Saves a lot of money. Our dollar is pretty much at parity yet we pay hundreds more and don't get to customise as much as on the US site...Just a thought.
-
OMG Snit!!!!!!!!!
Well, if you have the money to buy it, might as well go on vacation to the US/Canada AND buy a MBP at the same time, for that sum!!!
That's INSANE! -
Just so you know there is a flat 10% import tax on laptop imports to Australia, and thats including the shipping costs.
I gave the guys a ring the other day and asked about it as i was considering importing a laptop myself. -
VAT in Poland is 23%. I can get back VAT for MBP (because I am not citizen of Poland) so price will become 10190\1,23\3,4 = 2436$. I dont know what is the VAT in USA (i heard 8-10% depending on state) but if it's true then 2376-2420$ enough close to polish price
So if you divide that XPS 15 -3 - wyniki wyszukiwania - Sklep komputerowy - X-KOM.PL prices into 1,23 and 3,4 you will get approximate release prices

The US does not have VAT. It has sales taxes at the final point of sale, ranging from 0% in some states to over 13% in other states. Also some cities and counties have sales tax.
-
Those options only show one with blueray. That doesn't seem right to me. And I would think there would be more i7 options then that.
-
I don't have Amazon prime anymore but if I did, I would totally buy it and see if it comes in two days. -
He must of been talking about paying 10% GST on purchases over $1000. There are no tariffs on laptops (I just double checked in case there was a new one introduced). Even after paying GST, it is still considerably cheaper. Plus there is a chance that it will slip through customs without needing to pay the GST.
-
I rang the Customs, and asked what charges i would be given if i intended to import a laptop from overseas. I said i would be paying around $2.5k for the laptop and he said there would be a TAX of 10% on the laptop price paid (converted into AUD) + the postage costs. But yeah there is a very slim chance it can get through customs unnoticed.
-
Yeah that's the GST payable as it is over $1k. It is calculated using the value of the goods plus postage and insurance costs. Even after paying the GST it is still much cheaper from what I can tell.
I know some people that import quite a lot and they only get told to pay the GST around 50-60% of the time. I know, with my luck, I will need to pay it and I am happy to as it is still a saving.
Only thing needed would be a connection to fit our power points which is like $5-10 and then change the warranty over to Australia. I have never personally done this so I will see how I go.
Edit: This is a pretty good thread for any Australians interested in importing from the US
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1619137 -
Thats real handy thanks!
I will probably end up importing too myself hehe -
I think it's sad that you get a cheaper price importing from America than buying locally
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
As much as I love the idea of these prices, I still think they're off.
Although you can get a 512GB SSD on Newegg and the like for $300-$400, Dell sells theirs separately for $675-$900, and only slightly less when configured in a system. There is no way any configuration with a 512 SSD is selling for less than $2,300. -
The specs are so far off it's not even funny, the only i7 model has a 32GB SSD? LOL.
-
A question for Bill,
What's the deal with warranties when you import a laptop?
Let's say I'm on a holiday in the USA and happen to buy a DELL laptop there,
I get back home (The Netherlands) and after a month I get an issue with it.
Do I need to send it to DELL USA, this would involve outrageous shipping costs and a long time without the PC, or could I ring up DELL NL and get it fixed over here. -
Asus, Dell, Toshiba (I don't remember who else) have international warranty. Unless you buy a model that isn't imported into your country (in which case spare parts for your model aren't in stock and have to be ordered) there shouldn't be any problem.
-
Just fill in the warrenty transfer form and you have warrenty in your country.
-
Great thing to know. It's a possibility also for us in EMEA (Italy in particular), where such things in general cost much more than the States... maybe if a friend of mine go to a holiday in US...
-
I understand how you feel. But I'm hoping quidco or topcashback can offer decent discounts.
-
Ah that's very nice, but what about the difference in power supply? I guess an adapter is needed always? Or is it possible to just buy another charger cord or use a USAtoEU plug?
-
I haven't seen a 110v or 220v-only laptop charger in many, many years. I believe all of them have been switching for many years. I'm pretty sure a new cord (or converter plug, but TBH, that sucks) will be everything you need.
-
So you guys plan on using US style key layout or swapping in a keyboard with your own setup on it?
-
Thats 32GB of MSATA for instant boot.
-
Not quite sure if you're talking about the people that are importing,
but for me here in the netherlands we already use the international QWERTY keyboards so thats no problem
-
Is it safe to assume the size of the new laptops will be the same as the current models?
-
The XPS 15 and 14 will be thinner and lighter than their current versions.
-
The only spec we now about size is 0.95 inches thick
-
I really hope the XPS 15 doesn't have the same Cypress touchpad as the XPS 13 ultrabook. I just found out it has no proper Linux driver. Its so disappointing because I had pretty much narrowed everything down to the XPS 15.
-
They need to use one of those new Synaptics ones designed for Windows 8
Edit: I just noticed that the link of the leaked specs is false, http://image20.it168.com/picshow/900x675/20120614/2012061423130123388.jpg i7-3612 is 3.1ghz not 2.1ghz. -
The new XPS 15 better have a cooling system and battery life comparable to the Envy 15 lol cuz basically those will be my two choices for college. I think the 640m can handle games like Guild Wars 2 and Assassin's Creed right? Does anyone know how much it will weigh?
-
Not on high at native, but it should be able to play at medium or so, a cooling pad and a decent OC would make it work a lot nicer for those games, and no, we don't have any weight, battery life is a big unknown right now, as is 640m performance, we don't even know if it's a GDDR5 chip or not
-
Actually the i7 3612 IS 2.1 Ghz. It turbos when using ONE CORE to 3.1. http://ark.intel.com/products/64901/Intel-Core-i7-3612QM-Processor-(6M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz)-BGA
-
weight should be around 5.7 lbs (which is what the envy weighs in at
) according to leaked specs
-
Derp... I read Intel's site wrong, btw, ark.intel.com is better than cpu-world.
-
Considering Dell Bill has already said GDDR5 is going with the 630M on the lower models they offer, why would you think the leaks are wrong saying GDDR5 is on this machine?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/650572-new-dell-xps-l521x-ivy-bridge-183.html -
STOP DOING THAT
I didn't see that post, damn you. Well, afaik we still have no benchmarks of a 640m GDDR5 with a full power CPU.
-
I've browsed intel's website once or twice. The link i sent you was just the first one I opened. I apologize for not providing the exact source you misread.
-
Oh no I was just saying that ark.intel.com is a very nice website for searching Intel CPU's...
Anyway, this is the closest info we have on the 640m: AnandTech - Acer Aspire TimelineU M3: Life on the Kepler Verge
This is with a ULV + DDR3, so it's probably got more in common with the XPS 14 than the 15, but it's a good start. -
Well, lets consider these GDDR3 results as a worst case scenario then? NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
-
Here is a full power CPU with the gddr3 version of the 640m Google Translate -
I'm sure this has been mentioned, If you guys want to check out further info on the laptop enter the XPS14x's details into the dell warranty checker thing, backlit keyboard confirmed.
http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/au/en/audhs1/Index
Service Tag is GTV7DS1 - ship date of those leaked laptops was 4/06/2012. -
Ouch, that one is massively downclocked, the 640m can be 384 cores, 625mhz gpu, GDDR5. So I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's going to be quite a bit better, that 640m is clocked at 405mhz, 220mhz downclock + DDR3, serious hamper.
-
Nice find. CGGG3 Wonder what screen that part number is.
-
Yea, well I'm guessing thats what happens when its with a 45W cpu. the one supposedly coming in the possibly coming product will be a 35W quad or 35W duals.
-
Nah, that's just Acer being Acer.
-
Sorry if I missed this but is there an expected release date for the new 14 and 15? Or at least when it will be available for order in the US?
-
The window is June 22 - July 1. We are expecting late June.
-
A possible teaser page may appear this week. Expect a release announcement the week after.
