Currently the Australian government is carrying out an investigation into prices for Australians on electronics/software/technology as some are highly inflated for no reason.

Apple announced that the new Macbook would be a similar price to the US variant, before it was like 30% more on a lucky day.

However Dell prices are good and not inflated here.

Please please please don't make it too expensive (the 15).

The pics look really good so far, except I hate that space on the sides of the keyboard.

One of my top choices IF it's reasonably priced.

For the XPS 15? That's only 400$ less than that estimate! :)

1100$ would be a great price.

I'm torn between this, the 15R SE and Asus N56. I don't really "need" a new lap but I feel like buying one ;)

Yes, definitely it was a bad designed laptop: HP Pavillion dv9283ea. Super overheating, which caused also plastics to deformate and break. But it had powerful hardware, so high battery drain and for sure the high temperature damaged the battery too. I've tasted Dell's quality with my brother's laptop, the current XPS 15 (which I'm using in this moment), but I also know that batteries are always a weak point in laptops..

Right now I have 3 laptops (all 15.6).

2 Asus - 1 simple basic specs (great laptop and worth every cent) and one mid-upper range also a good one.

After 17 and 18 months of intensive use, the cheaper one has 2.2% wear level and the other one 5%!!!

The Dell XPS 15 that is one year old exactly today (I5-2410, FHD) had a wear level of 19% after 10 months!!!

Batteries are damaged by excessive heat and deep charge cycles... keeping them plugged into ac allows the controller to charge to full capacity, then doing slight discharge and charge cycles to equalize the cell voltage. But, also when not used, what damages inexorably a Lithium battery is age... after 4 or 5 years since manufacture date, probably also a shelf battery will not last longer than the time I'm taking to write those letters...

Pay attention, integrated batteries are nowadays Lithium-polymer, older replaceable external batteries were made of (round) lithium-ion cells... the two technologies exhibits different wear resistance...

Yup. I just need the batteries as backup if the power supply goes down so the laptops don't get ruined or something.

I treated all 3 the same.

I use the batteries every two weeks or so down to 8% and refill back.

Lithium Ion batteries don't like being fully charged. Not saying the Dell shouldn't perform better, but last time I checked a Li-Ion battery will lose approximately 20% capacity a year if left fully charged most of the time. How to Store Batteries – Battery University

    You're welcome :)

Maybe that's true. but my point is that I treat all my laptops the same and use them in the same way and yet the Asus batteries are clearly superior to the Dell!

One of the reasons may be that the Dell runs hotter than the Asus laps do which I guess is not good for battery life.

Or its possible the ASUS isn't reporting properly. Or the ASUS uses a different battery chemistry.

ive had my m1530 for 3.5 years now and my battery has degraded 25% in total (not that bad i find). its pretty much on all the time and if its off (which is only when i bring it to work or school) its always in sleep mode. i have it plugged in also pretty much all the time as well, except for lately ive been using the battery more often.

im quite positive that whether you have your laptop on or off while being plugged in all the time makes a large difference. i see it as when you leave your laptop on it gives the power from charging a place to "escape" to, if you have it off the power has to go somewhere and the battery the hit.

im probably wrong but it sounds logical to me and no one has ever called me out on it lol

and another question i have. ive seen it advertised on laptops that they "get out of sleep mode in less then a second" is that something special? my m1530 has always been able to do that...

You can't overcharge a lithium ion/polymer battery. They have hardware level safety guards against this. Use a physical power meter with the laptop off and the battery fully charged to prove this to yourself.

It is my opinion that people spend too much time worrying about their batteries. Someone who is paranoid and spends a ton of their own energy trying to keep the battery in perfect conditions are not likely to save more than 25% of the battery life over 3-4 years versus someone who mostly ignores their battery. I just don't think the extra time and worry is worth 25% of ~$130 for a new battery. Especially since no matter what you do, you will likely have to only change the *consumable* battery once in the laptop's lifetime.

for me its just a crap shoot - i know their is science behind it - but some batteries just last longer than others...no matter what you do...some people just get a lemon

i have never done anything extra to try and save the batteries life and always leave my laptop plugged in and have never had an issue...hope i never do

Bill suggested that the 1100$ was very close to the price of the XPS. Considering that the base price in Poland (according to the website link) is 1800$, take away 700$ off the polish price to get the US prices so they would go from 1100$ to 1900$ which is what we are expecting.
Odd though that there is only one i7 option, especially since we saw the i7-3612QM with 1gb hdd/256gb msata from the Romanian website.
I really don't think these are the right options for the US/Euro markets.

I dunno how many times I've posted this, but you can't directly convert from EU to US prices; it just doesn't work like that.

An Alienware M17x for example starts at $1,499 US (I think) where-as in the UK, it starts at £1,300 which is the equivalent of $2,100.
