Spot on. If I dont end up with the XPS the gpu is the main reason. And I will then buy an Envy 15. No way would I get the Alienware instead

Agree...want near Alienware capabilities to occupy my time in the off hours, but I'm not walking into a meeting with one of those.

I've been limping with a near death M1330 for awhile...screen probs, mobo probs, USB ports now really flakey. What I really need is exactly that machine with i7 and GPU update.

I haven't seen anything about WWAN on these machines...that's critical to me, as I use it 8 hours a day (other than a guess on a sim card slot) ...but I'm not the norm here.

Really looking at the XPS 14, but the alternate for me is like others, S13 :(

Can anyone convince me to buy one of the new Dells? I don't know why I'd get the XPS 14 the Vaio S13 has a faster 640m LE, or why I'd buy the XPS 15 when there's the Envy 15 which has a blazing fast 7750m. Which is a bummer because I'm a fan of the XPS designs, but I feel like I'd be spending more for less :/

Where do you get your 'Blazing fast' comments from? it should perform less than a 650m. If thermals are good then you should be able to oc to close to a 650m w/ gddr5.

its right under the 650m and i think it should be able to reach/surpass 660m with a medium OC

The 7750m in the Envy 15 should be around the same level as a gt640m 2gb GDDR5, cant comment on the vaio s13 though

I don't know, I just remember hearing it was really bleeding fast - can the 640m keep pace with it? I'm not terribly interested in the 650 since I'm looking for something rather portable.

    *edit*

    Welp, that answers that!

the 7750m according to benchmarks is right under the 650m /ddr5's performance and since 650m drr5 is superior to 640m ddr5 u can conclude that it is a bit faster considering OC cababiltyies

The GT640m is typically spece'd with GDDR3. Having the XPS team go with GDDR5 is a cool move and a proverbial middle finger to the M14x GT650m operating off of GDDR3.

A GDDR3 GT650m operates about 100Mhz higher than its GDDR5 version but still gets out paced by a lower core clocked GDDR5 model. The base frequency difference between the GT640m and GT650m is 110Mhz. It isn't a large stretch to imagine a GDDR5 equipped GT640m matching or beating a GDDR3 GT650m in performance. (Both the GT650m and GT640m have identical core counts.)

If we are lucky, the GPU cooling was fleshed out and approved for 45 watts of heat dissipation. Making it a simple task of bumping the GT640m base frequency up by 100~ Mhz... Bam! instant GDDR5 GT650m.

Also the envy 15's actually more than an inch thick, which as crazy as it may sound is a big deal for me (and presumably many others out there) and oh the uniform aluminium 'color styling/finishing of the xps 15 beats that of the new envy 15's 'black cover with silver body' styling. But like others have pointed out 2gb ddr5 640m against 1gb ddr5 7750m can "minimize" the difference performance wise. xps 15 has an ssd to boot :p

the thickness was also a concern for me but then i realized the weight is what matters cause ima be lugging it around and it turns out they are both going to weigh the same... im still waiting on the xps 15. My delivery for envy is going to be later today so then i will have 21 days to decide to return it or not

Possibly depending on the region you are in, will determine what HDD you will receive.

I think its just a Blueray reader not writer.

:( if you're right, I really can't understand Dell's adversion for blu-ray burners...almost every other competitor offers them as an option, and it would be awful to buy an external one when I have an ODD in the laptop

The DIMM,8GB,1600,1024X64,8K,204. suggests that Dell will ship a model with 16 GB RAM, which is excellent news! Though i'm very worried by the listing of the LiteOn 512GB. I'd definitely want the Samsung if I was spending that much money. Also the listing of the PM810 mSATA2 SSD surprises me... you'd think they'd only use the PM830 models.

German notebookcheck tested the Asus N56VZ-S4044V featuring a 650M pumped up to 835 MHz but combine with DDR3!? Display is said to be very good even if it is TN. Battery last 2-6 hours - 2 hours is battery eater bench even though a 45W CPU is used!? Looks like we can expect the new XPS to be a long time runner :)

    What's wrong with the LiteOn?

    I agree that it's weird to have a PM810 msata when there's a PM830 out there!
The odd thing is that their seems to be no sign of a 32bg msata disk whereas on BB they "offered" that possibility.

Did the screen experts figure which screen will be used? From the spare parts list we can clearly see the manufacturer is AUO. Add to that the fact we know for a fact it's a 350 nits (c.f. Dell's leak on their screen page and Bill's confirmation), and that it's a 1080p screen I think we can single out which one it is and maybe find which other laptop it's used on and as such know how good it is from reviews.

The closest thing I could find for the specs of this supposedly awesome screen is the B156HW03 but its brightness is "only" 300 nits whereas, as I stated in my comment above that it's going to be 350 nits. This may mean that it's an upgraded version of the B156HW03, who knows. However, if the screen is actually a B156HW03 it's not as good as one would think as it's the same one as on the 15z and is definetaly not as good as the XPS15 (current).
Or maybe it's a whole new screen, never used before and AUO is waiting for Dell to release their laptop to update their website.
Last possibility is that I have missed something, which is more than likely!

I would not pick either one for myself to be honest, not until I had confirmation I wasn't getting a 40nm part. Both the 640LE and 630M come in 28 and 40 nm flavors. With the 640LE you have no idea if you are getting a Fermi or Kepler chip. On the 630M you dont know if you are getting a 28 nm Fermi or a 40 nm Fermi. I hate that nVidia does this.

Assuming the firmware is ok and the ssd is reliable, the performance looks ok

    2.5" SATA MLC SSD

    7mm version --> 2.5" SATA SSD 7 mm housing

If I read the articles right, Liteon uses the same controller SSDs in the sweet spot: Modern contenders at 120-128GB - The Tech Report - Page 2 as Intel and Crucial in some SSDs.

Also it seems Dell is not the only one using Liteon Huge Growth in SSD Sales for Lite-On IT in 2012? - The SSD Review

    I feel relieved :)

No, the Best Buy site had the display at 300. Bill said the rumored and theorized product was listed with wrong information on Best Buy's site.

I'm quite sure he openly confirmed that a new 350nits was coming. Not necessarily for the XPS15 but that one was coming. (I think I got all my facts right)
And yesterday he confirmed that the BB page that indicated 300 nits was wrong so it's safe to assume that it's not the AUO I talked about a couple posts back.
Add to this the leak from dell (before they took it off their website) and it's pretty safe to say that the new one is 350 nits.

Can't hold out any longer ... ordered the MSI GE60 with 660m. Was really hoping for 650m in XPS 15 but chances aren't looking good. I hope this is the holy grail of laptops for you all :) The speculation was fun! (But it has dragged on for too long.)

"Yet Dell inadvertantly leaked that the screen was 350nits. BB could have done a mistake, it clearly wouldn't be the first time!"

    Bill:
"BB is wrong about the NIT number if this were a real product."

I think Bill just openly denied its gonna be 350 nits, but each his own interpretation :)

Hum, considering that the BB website indicated the brightness was 300 nits then Bill just confirmed that it wasn't a 300 nits screen and, IMO, at no point did he deny the 350 nits! It would be weird that Dell made a mistake on their own website, although not impossible! I guess we'll know more in 4 days!

The source of 350 nits for display is official Dell site, but not is the only one, in fact the Chinese site has published same specs about display and what we have seen in Chinese site is at the same level of official presentation.

Yep screens are usually the most expensive part of any item. Display glasses ain't cheap. :(

(That's the price it costs to replace it yourself)

The price is for the unit if you want to buy from tech service. It is not the price Dell pays to build the laptop

    Almost 800$??????? That's insane!!!
Makes no sense. If the price will be around 1100$ (and up with heavier config,) with all the other components, where is their profit???

No way is that the price.
The epic screen on the XPS 15 502 is being sold around 150$ which seems to be the common price for such screens so even if this screen is "something special" it would be what? 300$?

Not buying the 780$. NO WAY!!!!

What do you mean by "tech service"?
