The XPS line is their premium line of notebooks. This is a fact and not up for debate.
You seem to be arguing that the XPS 15 is outrageously too expensive and yet you recommend the Samsung Series 9? For the US the Series 9 15" starts at ~$1400 and the XPS 15 starts at $1300. Then there is the fact that these two notebooks target very different markets. The Series 9 compromises performance for portability and the XPS takes the middle road.

Keep it down guys.

NBR have a preview up.
Hands-on Dell's XPS 14 and XPS 15: A New Standard -
it's out in italy:
Dell.it XPS 14
Dell.it XPS 15
They seriously need to lower the price for the base model, at 1300 it's crazy -
There are plenty of reasons. And this phenomena is not exclusive to Dell, computers in general, or even American products. People tend to have a knee-jerk reaction and start pointing fingers without looking at the larger economy as a whole.
-
I repeat.
Please keep it down and control yourselves.
If you cannot discuss the merits of a certain brand over the other brands in a civil way, please refrain from doing so.
I had to delete more posts. -
Viewing angles are suspect on the XPS 14 or is that 15?..
-
Looks like the XPS 15 to me.
-
Not good then, even at a slight angle the picture is darkening at the top...At this price I would expect a decent display with good va..
-
Wow, just checked the french prices, and the "standard" i7 configuration (750gb/32gb msata), 8gb ram, dvd burner and a 3 year warranty comes in at a ludicrous 1800€. This is ridiculous.

NDA must be up... it's time for that review downlinx! Dell XPS 14 and 15 laptops complete our most competitive XPS lineup ever - Direct2Dell - Direct2Dell - Dell Community

Yep but if, in a moment of crazy madness, i think to be Donald Trump and pull the trigger for that XPS...THEN i want a PERFECT machine: no overheating, no throttling, no flex, no nothing. The sad truth is that from my experience you will never had a perfect machine and this is valid for DELL too (my last laptop was an XPS 1530M: overheating nightmare after only barely 1 year, grainy screen).
-
almost 1900 euro in Italy for the high end xps 15 and not 16GB RAM ? This is madness.
-
Do either the new XPS 15 or the new XPS 14 have a thunderbolt port or expresscard port? I've tried reading up on various sources but can never seem to find this information. This is potentially a dealbreaker for me.
-
Wow Dell! What are you thinking?! These prices are absolutely crazy! I was very hyped for this notebook, but I'm done...no way I'm going to pay €1800 for an i7 quad-core, 8GB ram and a 640M. For €1100 I can get a Sony S15 with the same specs! You can even buy a better specced Macbook for these prices...
The dumbest move Dell could have made, they made it...this is crazy. -
CNET has a review of the xps14 up:
Dell XPS 14 Review - Watch CNET's Video & Read Our Review -
Bill, why is there no 16 GB RAM option available in the EU?
-
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=6506&Review=Hands+on+Dell+XPS+14+XPS+15
ROFL.
That's not a preview but it sound as an advertizing.
-
There is such an option on the top end 15 for France, 200€ over the 8GB version (granted it also has a 128gb msata instead of a 32gb one).
-
Since we don't have any third party review, those videos are great to get an idea how good those products are.
IMHO, I see great quality and attention were given in the materials and the finish of those laptops (XPS 14 and 15).
However, I would have expect from DELL more options, especially to see some 256 Gb SSD, OR a way to configure the laptop to your own need (RAM HD DVD/BLUERAY etc...) .
We almost all here agree that there s big problem coming from the prices.
Prices seems to be "Premium".
Well it's nothing new in this world, but i would think twice before buying any of those units. I simply see any good enough reason to justify such "premium" high end prices policy.
With a budget of 2000$ for a single Dell laptop you could buy 2 good Chinese/japanese PC laptops, more or less with the same specs.
Those products are positioned as "Ultrabook" by Dell, though they are normal laptop with the same size/weight of previous models.
Price are not ULTRA PRICE here but EXTRA PRICES.... other ULTRABOOK are around 1000$, so i don't get the point of your marketing team. -
Well still can't buy it on US site. And a US chat rep just tried to steer me to other products.
-
Ah, yes, you're right! I also see that Germany has a 16 GB model available. Not the Netherlands and Sweden though. I guess we're not deemed worthy of 16 GB RAM
.
-
These are mighty tempting. I'd love the 14, but having an optical drive is really handy (playing dvds in dorms) and with the few USB ports, having an external one would be impractical. I do kind of wish the Hdds were 7200rpm though.
-
Something interesting just happened for me! I specced the same 15 I had specced about 30min ago on the french website and I get a 33% discount on a 3 year warranty (offers ends tomorrow), and I get free shipping, as well as a 5% discount. I end up with a price of 1 590,32 € instead of 1 788,94 €. What do you guys think? Good deal or not (as in better deal because it's still expensive)?
Edit: I also get free 10 months financing (I need financing so 10 months seems like an ok deal). -
Engadet-Review of the XPS 14
Sounds good, but some disappointing negatives (plastic bottom, touchpad, very high gloss) -
At least we do have a 3rd party review of the XPS 14:
Dell XPS 14 review: a 14-inch Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge and graphics might -- Engadget
Still hoping the XPS15 will do better but that would be a surprise. The price point is just not right also and that does not sound good at all:
"If indeed there is a drawback here, it's in some rather distracting fan noise. Do some serious work on this machine (like, say, running an endless string of benchmarks back to back) and the fan will certainly make its presence known. Even when doing less intensive tasks, like streaming YouTube's latest hits, we quite often heard the noisy little thing spinning itself up."
Edit:
Just configured my preferred setup on the german dell site and it is 1886€ (not the top configuration) which is just much too much. I think I am out. -
I'm not sure if many of you guys got the memo... but high quality 256gb and 512gb SSD drives are VERY EXPENSIVE. I would bet that the SSD's being used are made by Intel or Samsung, and after a quick check on Newegg, Intel costs $350usd for a 250gb and a whopping $750usd for the 480gb and a Samsung is $270 for 256gb and $699 for 512gb.
As for me... i'm still considering the XPS. I wont decide for another week or two since i usually regret impulse buys. -
1) For god's sake, 10 pages about Vizio! Make another thread please, this is about the just released XPS.
2) I'm not too surprised by prices to be honest, but I'd expected something more from Dell for this mountain of money:
3) I just LOL'd at those SSD "options": 32 GB msata in every configuration+HDD OR a 512 GB SDD. No midway. Well, I don't know what you think, but I buy SSD for OS and software (so just 32GB is a joke) and definitely not for storage (so why 512 GB???) What about AT LEAST 64GB? 128? 256? So difficult to put them as options?? Too much work??
4) A high-end multimedia laptop without blu-ray support?? Seriously Dell??
5) No black option?
There are no fanboys here Dell, you must earn your money. Bad job -
Now that the laptops are up, can we have an official thread on them? This thread has mostly speculation.
The prices are way up from 2011 models according the the Verge price list. I got my XPS 15, 1080p, Blu-ray, i7, 500 Gig 7200rpm for less than $1000 on Nov 2011 (after sale). The comparable laptop (slightly better HDD and more RAM) is $1700.
Anyway, my laptop is good enough so my interest in the 2012's is to see what direction Dell is going. Hopefully by Haswell release, they will add Thunderbolt for docking and higher than 1080p resolution, but keep the optical drive and ethernet port. Meet in the middle between Macbook and PC. -
Maybe the good idea would be to pick the cheaper I7 then buy yourself in 6 months from now one 512SSD since SSD prices are falling ?
-
Well a lot of people were comparing the Vizio's to the XPS in terms of price/performance. It's not exactly unwarranted.
I think if Dell had managed to get a 640M LE into the XPS14, priced around 1100$, it would have been a fantastic fantastic buy. The 630M is too weak for me though I think
-
I agree, thats the only thing thats keeping me from the 14... that and the fact you can't order in the US
-
That certainly doesn't help

I am very disappointed with the options in the UK. There is only on i7 XPS 15 and it has no SSD. I have been waiting 6 months for this to come out and it feels like there is no option that meets my needs.
The XPS 14 however has a 512mb SSD and i7. I am confused by these specs. -
Yikes! Noise is pretty much a dealkiller for me, particularly if it's to the point of being distracting.
-
Guys, don't forget the coupons! As I said in a previous post (last page) I got a 200€ coupon which puts the system I had configured to 1590€ from 1788€ which is "more" acceptable (so much so that I want to jump the gun as the offers expire tomorrow and I have no clue as to when they'll be back).
-
Other countries might have a reason to use coupons but the UK options are non existent. There are zero options for CPU, ram or HDD in any model.
I have a 10% off voucher code but see no reason to use it.
-
Even with 10% off the price the price is still at least 25% to high...
-
Man I am so done with dell after all this the xps 14 has noisy fans can't wait for the xps 15 to be the same and they want a high price.
Guys just get the vizio I'm expecting it to be a hit. The 15.6 thin and light looks hot. I use a computer for work the specs are almost perfect. Only keyboard not back lit and ethernet will need an adapter.
For what dell wants for the xps might as well get a macbook
Pure ICS only -

-
l502x - baseprice of 599 euro
l521x - baseprice of 1399 euro
(netherlands pricing)
my wallet... it burns! -
LOL a Dell's Rep has just confirmed me (in an uncertain Italian, too) that it won't be possible to have a freakin' blu-ray drive...Just amazing for a 1900 multimedia laptop...
-
It's a joke what the laptop makers are doing with us Europeans at the moment. The funny thing - Apple was even moderate with pricing the MBPR just 300 € more expensive than in the USA (if you include the usual about 20 % sales tax). Others have the chutzpah to ask for 50-70 % more than in the USA.
-
In Ireland the base config of i5, 750gb 7200rpm + 32gb msata, 8 gb ram, GT 640 is 1370 euro, not too terrible but the lack of customisation is disappointing but wouldnt that be a similar price to the L502x with i7 1080p screen and gt540 last year ?
The price is closer to a macbook, but there is a premium to pay for the slim design much improved graphics + battery life and the excellent support that any current xps owners knows we get. -
I agree, we're not in the third world, it's not difficult to ship a SSD drive or a blu-ray drive, but maybe we're not worthy

I don't get it you can get acer m3 for £550 with gt 640m with ulv cpu and dell charging incredible amount with a gt640m. gtx660m I would understand. Seems crazy. A gt 640m with i5 and 1080p should cost £800 at the highest.
-
Ok im out
As stated before the price in the EU (netherlands) is off the hook:
If you want the GT640M model the price is 1599,-
And as said before, not even 12+ gb RAM or Blue-ray
All I want is a nice small notebook with a relative good GPU to play some games.
Just checked the old XPS15 models for a good bargain, unfortunately they don't have the FULLHD screen anymore.
If I'd known about the prices/options I've gone with the old XPS with FHD screen when they were still available
