well, as much as a review can be, not as great as i wanted it but it is, just waiting for word, that i can release it.
but in the mean time, i do not know if it has been posted but here is dell blog release of the product
Direct2dell xps 14/15 information
-
Hope the fan noise isn't what the engadget review made it out to be. Or I at least hope dell will release new drivers like they did for 13 when it came out.
Really disappointed with the lack of customisation and high prices. In Ireland the 14 only comes with 8GB RAM which is completely unnecessary for me. Having a starting price at €1229 is just too much. I understand that its a "premium" product but you're paying a whole lot more and not really getting a whole lot more. -
One thing you could answer, how loud is the fan, does it spin up all the time for youtube etc and is it cool underneath?
-
I've been browsing this thread for some time and finally decided to register and post.
If these are indeed the final prices I'll likely go with a different company for my purchase. $1699 for the i7 and no customization. I'll pass. -
Don't be too quick to jump on that, Quidco small print reads:
"Get 10% off on selected Inspiron & XPS laptops over £495 (exclude M11x, XPS 13, XPS14, XPS15, Inspiron 14Z Ultrabook)" Ignore this, just checked all of the offers and there is another for sales over £999 which doesn't have these T&Cs
Otherwise I would probably have jumped on this as it would've brought the price down to under £1100, which is good for the spec. As it stands it's coming out at £1319 (with 2yr support added)
I am also considering the Sony VAIO S15 and customised to my liking (including BR Drive & IPS Screen) it comes to £1208 (minus 6% Quidco = £1136ish).
The main benefit of the XPS over the VAIO is the graphics card (but not by much) does anybody know if it's the DDR3 or DDR5 variant?? -
Education? Medical? Public transportation? He was right about a lot.
-
Bill, do you know what time they will be available for sale?
Hitting refresh is annoying me, lol -
The 10% voucher I posted DOES work. So 18% is viable.
-
who is going to jump in ordering right away? I will not, considering it is a bit cosy, but I will wait for review and discount for it. Do you guys know what is the highest discount you could get from Dell? 20% off. Well, it looks amusing in youtube videos, that display is vivid and solid.
-
I suppose it won't really sell very well for these prices...
XPS15 from 1300€??? If you want the FHD display you are at 1650€
seriously??? Who will buy these???
The L502x started at 800€ and for 1200€ you could get a pretty good machine.
In my oppinion there are 4 types of consumers:
- The el cheapo - does not need power or looks, buys what is cheap - everything above 700-800€ too expensive for him
- The enthusiast - does need power and looks but looks at the price tag - will shell out 1200€ for a nice notebook with good specs but will not go above that
- The powermonger - needs the fastest stuff there is, no matter the price - will buy Alienware, the XPS15 is not fast enough for him
- The Apple fan - has the cash, but won't buy Dell - Never Ever
So Dell, who will buy an XPS for 1650€??? -
Pretty disappointed about the price but if I can get $250+ in coupons I may spring for this. Otherwise, the Vizio is much more tempting at this point.
-
The business man who likes his multimedia options. Someone like me, who while does not like getting ripped loves the looks and specs but does not want to spend Apple money.
For reference I am willing to buy one in the next 24hrs, but I need some answers to a few questions which is proving quite hard with all the people moaning about the price and how they are going to buy another laptop! -
Thanks, I've edited my other post. I was reading the wrong deal
Still not sure I want to part with over £1k on a laptop that doesn't have a BR Drive though
If the 640M used in the Dell is the DDR5 version I might change my mind on that though.
-
It is the GDDR5 version
-
no it does not, onlytime was when i was gaming or the couple benchmarks i ran.
-
So you wait for Dell approval of your review, sorry to say but I am not interested in reviews corrected by Dell.
-
Lets just say, if I haven't bought an L502x last year, I would not buy this one! I earn way enough money, but I find it overpriced...ok, you can say Apple is even more expensive, but thats not the point...Apple gets sold just by its name.
Dell hasn't got the brand identity to sell such overpriced notebooks, it won't work. You have Apple fanatics, but please show me someone who is a Dell fanatic... -
I think he's waiting for word that he's not violating the NDA
-
Dell really thinks this is the most "competitive" line "ever"? Big LOL.
I'm very disappointed. I was considering this very seriously and I was actually thinking about the basic config but even that is way too expensive.
What a bummer. -
Okay so the base laptop s £1099 in US and UK is £1049.
Dell does realise a direct conversion is £700, I'm fed up of companies like dell screwing us over by charging so much more. I'm afraid to say it's a no buy for me at the moment, a ULV processor and 630m just isn't worth it. You can get a GTX660m and full i7 for less.
Look at all the review comments and everyone says it's overpriced, base model should be no more than £800-£900. -
Scrap everything I've just said, the Dell UK website was quoting EXCLUDING VAT
This makes the laptop actually £1595 before any discounts... which is insane! There's nothing about this laptop that justifies such a high price tag!!
-
I don't see prices posted on Dell's site yet?
And you all forget the US does not have VAT built into the price. Its still not a perfect conversion, but I really don't think you are all getting screwed. If thats the pre VAT price... um.. yea I take it all back. -
This, dell is not editing my review at all, so no worries there.
-
Wow, excellent news!
-
If you're not buying this laptop then why are you here knocking other people who interested it
-
OK. A Dell's Rep has just confirmed me that italian keyboard won't be backlit either! I can't believe to all the crap I've learned today, I thought Dell was a serious company, but I realize they don't care what customer need at all. Wasted 1 month reading 384 pages for nothing
-
That is a seriously expensive laptop for missing such a simple feature.
-
Norwegian keyboard will not be backlit either. So, you are not alone
And concidering the pricetags @1530 Euros\1910 US Dollar- @2200 Euro\2750 USD, it is disappointing. But atleast Blue-ray will be a option later on... -
Also... no SSD except the 512Gb!! (from an italian Dell's REP too)
I must say that no 256Gb SSD (or at least a 64-128 Gb MSata SSD + normal HDD) is REALLY disappointing! -
I am just voicing my opinion about the price policy, if thats ok with you...
And by the way, if you think its a good price for this notebook, pay it...if not buy something else...its a democracy here -
At least your dell reps acknowledge it exists. I get pointed at other models when I try talking to them.
-
It's DDR5. It's the size and weight I am most worried about. As a university student I'm going to be carrying it everyday along with other heavy books.
I'm considering the xps 15, thinkpad edge s430 and the Sony vaio 15 and 13. -
No backlit either? Dell, you just lost a sale.
-
Sorry this is for the 14 so expect to be ripped off more for the 15. VAT is NOT over 30%.
I think if you lived here in the UK you would get as fed up as we do, I usually get my electronics when I can get to the USA as they can be half the price as the UK. Apple does the same but I get a 15% discount and free £90 voucher for university. Macbook is far cheaper which I never thought i would say. -
The top model of the XPS 14 costs 1999 USD on the US site and 1799 € on the German site. Even with VAT that's about 230 € (280 USD) too much.
But that aside, if you price your laptop just 200 USD/400 € below the Macbook Pro Retina (and having a far worse display, higher weight with a smaller form factor, weaker GPU, weaker CPU, worse materials used - but more storage admittedly) you might be very optimistic with your pricing. -
Take a serious look at the Sony S13, much better value than this and well under 2kg so about as lightweight as you could get.
-
LOL I would be surprised if there are many interested in that and there is no wrong with him writing such stuff here. You will have likers and dislikers, this is why these forums are for.
-
Yes, we can always add the international backlit keyboard (for 40 more, obviously) but I can't believe I should spend all these money and not have an italian keyboard...99% of my text is in italian, not english..The SSD doesn't afraid me, it would be cheaper to buy it from 3rd party and put it in, mSATA too, but if I have to buy RAM, mSATA, SSD from 3rd party why should I give Dell 1500?
-
Nope. That's real CF on the 13.
-
ROFL, no backlight keyboard in Italy ??
I have faith in human race and Dell managers intelligence, i think the Dell's Rep you contacted was wrong. It's impossible no backlight keyboard, it's a minimal detail, lol
-
You forgot to add import duty, it''s not just VAT (well at least for the UK)
-
My mistake then. I was under the impression that the XPS13 did have a real carbon fiber under-body. The benefits of using carbon fiber are many, whether it be strength, weight, and heat transfer.
Dell has always offered an optional high end mobile GPU in their XPS line of laptops, and for me it has nothing to do with gaming. nVidia graphics chips are great for encoding/decoding video, greatly speeding up filters and other features in Photoshop CS6, and many other tasks that are time consuming.
I just checked Dell.com and there are ZERO hardware related customizing options listed for either the 14" or 15" XPS.
Between this comment and that groundbreaking revelation about the XPS not being a gaming machine so it shouldn't have a upper end GPU.... it seems to me that you're simply making excuses for a company that recently decided to stop offering consumers the most important services that built their brand. People buy dell computers because of excellent features, style, value, and the ability to custom tailor a computer to fit your needs.
This would be like Ford randomly deciding to stop selling trucks regardless of the fact that the truck market is over 70% of their business. Are those truck buyers going to buy Ford cars instead?
The new XPS is marketed as a high performance design and multimedia system. And I love how they also say it has "top graphics"...
Really? Since when?
Most people buy XPS laptops for their excellent processing power and multimedia capabilities as well as high end build quality and stunning looks.
Prior to the two laptops released today and the 13", I can't think of any XPS laptops that were known for long battery life. I've spent the past 15 years as a systems consultant and XPS laptops were actually well known for NOT having good battery life. -
Confirmed - NO BACKLIT KEYBOARD IN THE UK.
Coupled with the fact that I can't get blu-ray which I had convinced myself I did not need, this is a no sale until that changes. -
I like Dell, I like Bill, I like this topic... I just don't like the price.
The 10% discount coupon does not work for the new xps15 model, for the old one it does. (EU)
Shipping will be around 2 to 3 weeks according to a Dell rep.
I've been pointed towards the Msi GE60 laptop bij someone, I might pick that one up. Lenovo Y580 still not available here, the website still says may 2012. Fails all over the place
-
really, i have a hard time believing it, just did not feel right, must be the process you put it through to complete the rigidity of the product. ok, i stand corrected. it just didn't feel like it. sorry andrew i was wrong.
@AndrewB there is not customization on the website as it is not been publicly released for sale, when it does you will see the customization options. -
US Prices are out. Not thrilled.
-
Import duty is what you pay instead of VAT if you import something, and both are about the same, so it's a wash at least in Germany.
Edit: Not to mention that Dell wouldn't pay import dutiy on the 1500 € that the laptop would cost without the VAT, but on the vastly lower price they would have to declare the laptop at. Also, they pay the same import duty in the USA I assume, since the laptops are made in China and imported in both countries. -
Oh well, another good news! At this point I'm seriously rethinking the XPS line, at least in Italy
-
I had the same, the rep was trying to sell me an L501x claiming it was the same and L521X was just an internal reference.
-
Well, I can find it on the website in the public page, they can't deny it exist
