Yh but the Dell has to pay the import duty? which has to be factored in.
-
Exactly! I agree with you on the whole line
-
I wonder the Gorilla glass thingy is the culprit for the high price?? If so, I prefer Monkey glass or something cheaper.
-
I am kinda disappointed with the pricing. I can get a more powerful Envy for 200 dollars less.
-
Same as when I bought my L502x
Bought the keyboard from dell spares separelty in the end £70!!!! Rip off
I bought a blu-ray drive separately too but that was a much easier laptop to upgrade.
To be honest this is how dell will be in the UK if the last year with the L502x is anything to go by. They'll lower the price in due course but to be honest do you want a Dell or a S series specced up Sony for similar or less money!
The build quality may be good but it ain't MBP good and money aint too far off. To be honest I've been quite tempted by the Lenovo that everyone's been talking about...major spec! for £1k -
What Dell has done here is lower all the components it offers (the 5400 HD, ram, screen etc) as much as possible (to not embarrass themselves) while making a great design and asking for ridiculous prices, which they obviously think people will pay for the design and image.
Instead of luring Apple/HP/Lenovo/Asus/others customers, they are pushing their potential customers away.
There's simply no justification for these outrageous prices! NONE.
What fail. -
Honestly, this simply means I will upgrade my current L502x with more memory (which I already did) and a SSD. You should be fool to fall for this price. Definitely this is a no no to me in US until Dell lowers the prices and offers customization. Customization and good value were two main causes I've preferred Dell.
-
LOL they should fire such a rep...
-
I have just bought XPS15 with i7 and 8GB RAM for £1,169.09. I bought a Samsung 830 SATA3 256GB SSD to upgrade it for £131.65. £1,300 total delivered.
I bought my Studio XPS in 2009 for £1,269 so it is pretty much the same (Studio XPS was only 4GB RAM).
That said laptops should be better value these days! -
Do you live in US? On amazon.it that SSd is 255€
-
I dont' see TPM on the US options or do they all have TPM?
-
@Dell-Bill_B
Now that the muzzle is off, can you give us any additional specs on the XPS 14/15 screens? Colour gamut, viewing angles, etc.? -
Also, note that the US prices include accidental damage protection, so that explains a bit of the higher price.
-
Point is that laptops have been dropping in prices all across the board with each passing year and in these last 3 years.
Saying you are paying the same price you paid 3 years ago (and before a global economic crisis and during one) isn't saying much, is it? -
Any word on Canadian pricing?
-
LOL never offer services that people didn't ask for.

Sei sicuro?

Dell, c'mon, tell us this is a joke!
1500 EUR at least, plus buying another hard drive, msata ssd and 40 EUR for INTERNATIONAL keyboard backlit? laugh for not crying...
EDIT: not saying that in Italy the Envy 14 is coming with a shelf price of 799 EUR, VAT&Taxes INCLUDED... damn, with an XPS I could buy almost TWO of the envy... I repeat myself, this must be a joke from Dell... -
@Bill what is up with your online reps? I just tried to purchase the XPS 15 with the Dell University deal that is listed on the front page of the XPS 15, and they say it is not available. Why is it being advertised on the xps 15 page then?
-
Now I'm confused, I've just had another look based on this and all the options have changed! It now reads as £1299 incl VAT (so £1065 with Quidco cashback), this is all very confusing!
-
Is this the Lenovo people are talking about:
Notebook computers - IdeaPad Y580 - United Kingdom (UK) | Lenovo | (GB) -
No, I live in UK. The price I paid was a surprise! That drive should be approx £200 so I snapped it up for £131...
-
SSD prices have been dropping quite rapidly in the UK for the last couple of months.
-
One thing you all can consider is to just buy one from Best buy this week, get the free 4gb xbox slim, sell it, and there you go you got an extra $150-200 from Craigslist / eBay sale
-
Dear Bill: Are there some specific reasons not to provide a blu-ray burner? I saw that also with this new model it's available (at max, in some countries) a reader, but never a burner. thank you in advance
EDIT:PM'd -
I agree, it should probably be 20% less than it is although that SATA 3 SSD will be blazing fast so I am reasonably happy.
-
Anyone know when the XPS 15 will appear in retail stores in the US? I really want to try it out in person before I decide whether to buy it...
-
Do you have a link? Where did you get it? Cheapest I can find it is £145.
-
Oh btw inspiron r special edition looks much more promising. In fact you are getting the same performance as base XPS 15 if not more. Better check.
-
Ok Launched.

New XPS 15 laptop â 1080p Full HD 15-inch display with Gorilla Glass | Dell
-
And also in netherlands no backlit keyboard. On a laptop which sells FROM 1399 eu. I honestly cant believe that... I sold my previous zenbook mainly because i missed that so much. I for sure wont buy another one without this.
Also, in one of the youtube vids someguy is talking about how great this laptop is for "highend multimedia" like bluray? ... Not an option in the netherlands...
Sorry its all so negative Bill, but this really is really disappointing. (for this price) -
Inspiron 15SE - i7-3612QM / 1TB / HD7730 2GB / DVD - £880
XPS 15 L521X - i7-3612QM / 1TB / GT640M 2GB / DVD - £1300
£420 for the premium look and feel. -
Any reasons to get this instead of a similarly spec'ed HP Envy?
Or even Vizio, that is 500$ cheaper both with the quad-core? (already considering the weaker GFX) -
i find the previous discussions of dell not wanting putting in a stronger gpu in the new xps15 quite absurb now. the inspiron 15r se seems to be more of a competitor to the new xps15 then the m14x. the top of the line inspiron 15r se, currently selling for $1100 on the Dell US sight has nearly identical specs with the second highest configuration of the new xps 15, which is selling at $1700.
- Both have the 3rd Gen Intel i7-3612QM
- Both have 15.6" 1080p screens, granted the xps one should be significantly better i hope
- Both have 8GB ram at 1600MHz
- 1TB 5400RPM HDD + 32GB mSATA for inspiron vs 750GB 7200RPM HDD + 32GB mSATA for xps
- Both have Blu-ray Disc players
- AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M 2GB for inspiron vs NVIDIA GT 640M 2GB GDDR5
this is the only "big" difference between the two but i see notebookcheck has them at 69th and 70th place (im assuming this isnt the GDDR5 version the the 640m)
Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech
but either way, the inspiron 15r se just made a huge leap forward in my eyes -
Yup - that's the one! You gets you one of them, upgrade some bits and bats and you'll probably still come in at a price less than the equivalent of Dell and have a beefy video card
-
Great thanks!
-
Just ordered previous gen XPS15z 1080HD screen, I7@2,8 256 SSD, 8 gig,
for 900€.... -
$1700 for the low-spec XPS 15 i7? Wow...speechless.
Might as well pay a bit more and get a Mac for that price.
Or save $500 and get an Envy w/ the same specs after coupon. -
Envy 14 799 euro's?! Tell me more!
-
Looks like the SSD price drops are happening to us first! We're never first for these sorts of things!
I only buy SSDs now. I got 3 x Crucial M4s in all my machines (old MBP, XPS 15 L502X and a HP Probook (missus' laptop) and I'll never to back to slooooow spinning HDDs. -
i'm shocked there isn't a straight SSD option either.
-
Inspiron has upgradable CPU so you can get a proper one like 3720QM or 3820QM on ebay and replace it yourself.
-
When Will This Be On Bestbuy.com?!?
-
Quidco offer of 10% off + 6% cashback too! It is a little bulky though, I think I could sacrifice the GFX card for the slimmer body of the VAIO S15. It's a shame the Dell has come in so pricey (and w/out crucial - to me - specs) as build and style wise it ticks all the right boxes
-
Yeah they're upgradable
-
Hope someone can help me as I have never replaced a HDD before or even opened up a laptop.
If I was to purchase the XPS 15 with the HDD+msata option, how would I go about putting in a straight SSD (probably 256gb)? Would I just replace the HDD with the SSD and leave in the msata or do I take out both and jus put in the new SSD?
Sorry if my question sounds stupid but like I said, I have never done this before and know basically nothing about hardware except what I have learnt by following this thread since the start. -
But Newegg prices != what Dell would pay. Dell wouldn't use an expensive SSD either. I would expect them to use something like the Crucial M4 or one of the other SSDs that have been reliable, but are almost 50 cents/GB. The M4 512GB for instance, is around $340 and the 256GB has been bought for $180.
-
OK, pricing on Dell UK is all over the place. Base price for the i7 is now £1299, but add the 2yr Service & Support the price jumps to £1514... an increase of £215 when the price is listed at £115!!! Not sure I can trust anything listed on there at the moment!
EDIT: Also when I checked earlier it included Win7 Pro 64 in the price but they've dropped that to the Home Premium version with no upgrade option
-
According to information posted earlier in the thread, the 512GB SSD is Samsung or LiteOn.
-
you can do as you wish, the msata ssd is basically another hard disk. It's just useless to keep 32 gb of msata ssd when you have a much faster and bigger ssd. You could install another os on the smaller ssd (if that's your thing) or replace it with a bigger one (not really worth it, it's too expensive) or just keep it inside and use the extra fast space for whatever you want
