Are you sure you weren't looking at the business offering at that point but now looking at the home one?

The 2 are different - you've descried the business one and then the home one.

I have never been a fan of extended dedicated support for a laptop/PC as you are covered on decent home insurance for any major failures.

You are indeed correct, in my haste to look earlier I must have followed the wrong link. However, the prices are still fluctuating, speccing up the same system through the business site is now a whopping £1649... excl VAT! So to me that comes in at £1979  Crazy!

If the consumer version came with Win7 Pro & a BR Drive @ under £1300 I'd be very tempted as I do like the look of it. Anybody know the weight of the XPS15?

I added it as a comparison to the Sony VAIOs which come with 2yrs as standard (as long as you add Win7 Pro, which I would always pick over Home Premium).

The configuration I would have gone for costs 1650€. Even if there would be a coupon reducing the price (please send me a PM is there is a nice one for Germany which works with the new XPS) I would have to wait for some reviews telling me how noise, heat and display turns out to be in real life. I am not that optimistic.
I still would have to buy a SSD for this setup :-/

True. I have used more than 8 Dell laptops in the past. But this time Dell disappoint us badly. We can

    Dell XPS 15
    3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)
    Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
Silver Anodized Aluminum and 15.6" FHD 1080p Truelife WLED Display and Skype-Certified HD Webcam
    16GB2 DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
    1TB 5400 HDD with 128GB mSATA
Slot Load Blu-ray Disc BD-Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 640M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM
$1999 (Without Tax). It will be around $2200-2400.

    MacBook Pro with Retina
    15-inch: 2.3 GHz Retina display

    2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB flash storage1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)2
    $2199 no tax.

    So, number speaks itself.
    Mac Pros:
    256GB SSD
    Better Built ofcourse
    Retina
    650M GDDR5

Not sure about others, but I am highly disappointed & waste my 3-4 months of waiting.

Now considering about XPS Sandy Bridge, Envy or MacBook Retina one.

Ok, I broke down and bought it. Talked to a rep on the phone, they took the 1699 model down to 1600, minus the 80 I'll get back from Dell advantage, minus the 150 in bonus cards I got when I bought Dell gift cards, that brought the effective price down to 1370 US$. Not too bad.

I've ordered the 15" now, and I've got a question for Bill or anyone that can answer. Can I partition the mSATA-card to contain only the OS? And use the 1TB as a storage drive?

Would I be able to do the same if I replaced the mSATA with an aftermarket 60-120GB SSD?

Guys Vizio thin and light 15.6 is shipping to stores this week along with the other models.

Four 1250 I get an i7 and an sad 256gb 1080p ips anti-glare screen. And its way thinner only 4 pounds.

If you order on vizio.com or buy at Ms store, Costco, Sam's, you get a two year warranty. Stop letting dell have their way with you.

    Pure ICS only

Anybody else notice, in the US anyway, that when pricing out the XPS 15/14 it explicitly states "No Palmrest Label Included" ? I'll assume that means no Windows of Intel labels, and that's pretty nice. At I'm hoping that's what it means. Still, I hope Bill comes through with the test he promised yesterday of using the WD-40. I don't want to take any chances.

Dell is getting into the habbit of advertising in the UK without VAT. Was happy when I saw the base xps 15 was £880 but added to basket and is an extortionate £1074. Dell need to get their act together or face some bad times ahead. £880 was just about okay but over £1000 is a joke! Sort it out dell.

America don't seem to be as badly off as the rest of us.. We don't even have a backlit keyboard with them. In Ireland they expect us to pay €1229 for this 14" laptop that isn't even very special.. Ridiculous. The backlit keyboard is essential! It should be standard on them all!

Been waiting months for this XPS and as everyone can see it's a bloody rip off. The 15z should be dropped in price and that should be the new XPS price, dell cant afford to charge so much. Bloody ridiculous.

Don't listen to some of the sales reps.. I was told that they didn't have a backlit keyboard but was then redirected to someone to do with manufacturing and told me that the backlit keyboard is standard on them all. Not going to order anything at least until the reps have an idea of the laptops. They seem clueless at the minute.

    Dear Bill,
I don't know if you'll get to read this but i hope you do 'cos this is one disappointed individual. Well apparently either dell thinks malaysians are not worthy enough of the xps 15 or they believe malaysians are not rich enough to afford them because for some unfathomable reason dell has decided not to bring the xps 15 to malaysia!! Some guy on dell malaysia's facebook page asked when the xps 15 would be available and the dell reps are actually trying to convince the guy to get the xps 14!! Personally i've never owned a dell product, my office on the other hand only use dell products which was how i got my first dell laptop (e6420) and i fell in love with it. I decided to wait for the xps 15 ever since the rumours started only to get shafted in the butt... well i guess the e6420's gonna be my sole dell product ever. [IMG]. Guessing it's hp's shop tomorrow then for the envy 15.

This is ridiculous, the pricing in Switzerland for top of the line XPS with Win7 Ultimate (CHF 2'408.99) (CHF 2'198.99 without Ultimate) makes the retina MacBook Pro (low end) look almost affordable (CHF 2'449.00) (CHF 2'252.88 with education pricing, Dell doesn't seems to offer education pricing here in Switzerland)
I need some help here, I am far from being an expert on hardware but it seems to me that booth laptop have ± equivalent specs can someone confirm this? (Apple have a better screen and slightly better GPU and CPU, on the other hand Dell have a twice as much storage and 1 extra hour battery life.)

    APPLE:
    i7-3610QM (2,3 GHz to 3,3 GHz)
    GT 650M 1GB GDDR5
    8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L
    256 GB SSD
    7 Hours of Battery

    DELL:
    i7-3612QM (2,1 GHz to 3,1 GHz)
    GT 640M 2GB GDDR5
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    512 GB SSD
    8 Hours of Battery

    Apple specs
    Dell specs
    Intel Core i7-3610QM @ 2.30GHz
    Intel Core i7-3612QM @ 2.10GHz

Why am I not surprised that Applegadget gives a PC negative points for glossy screen when the MBP's have had them for years. I'm surprised they don't give a negative for not being able to remove the battery, and then give the MBP positive for "no chance of messing up internal components since you can't swap them out".

With that said, highly disappointed in the lack of options on these XPS models. Dell really dropped the ball.

Wow, I really feel sorry for you guys that were holding out.

I've been following the XPS 15 for a few months, and as it got closer to the release date, I could see that it wasn't going to live up to the hype (unfortunately) so I went with the HP Envy 15, and man am I happy with my decision.

    For $1172 shipped and taxed:

Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • 3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM Processor (2.3 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
    • 1GB Radeon(TM) HD 7750M GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • 6GB 1600DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 750GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
    • 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery - Up to 10.25 hours of battery life +++
    • 15.6-inch diagonal Radiance Full HD Infinity LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
    • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • 720p HD video streaming webcam supports Skype
    • Intel 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R) with Wireless Display Support
    • Full-size Radiance backlit keyboard
    • Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) Elements 10 & Adobe Premiere(R) Elements 10
    • 2 year limited warranty included

Bought 16GB of ram and a 256GB SSD for an additional $300, and my $1500 laptop blows Dells top offering out of the water.

I think they might in fact. In France for example when you select your XPS it doesn't clearly state "backlit keyboard" but the notebook's dedicated page does say it has a backlit keyboard. According to some people who asked Dell about it they also confirmed that it's backlit.

Still I wouldn't take it for granted, but I'd wait for more details at least before whining.

Anyone know if the US has 10% coupons? I couldn't find any. If I can stack those with student discount on dell's website, I'll be happy. I don't care about customization, but I really DONT want a blu ray drive. I don't know why they force us to have a blu ray drive if we get the 640M. Also downlinx i reeeealllly want to see your review before I decide.

Why are people complaining about the price? Just give it a while, maybe a month or two, for the inevitable price drop, discounts and more customisation. This is how it has always been with Dell, you've waited this long for the release of the laptop what is an extra month wait if you absolutely do not need to buy a new laptop today or soonish.

Having said that, I can't find any other laptop that provides the same offering for a cheaper price.

I guess this is something subjective, but definitely a high-end multimedia laptop should offer the option.

I am helping my brother buy the XPS 15 for work (as my 1640 serves me nicely still). I'll be choosing the $1299 option and although he has considered a Mac & could use Windows in parallels, the cheapest Macbook starts at $1829 here in Canada.

For my brother, the low end XPS15 falls right in where I expected the price to be with the features he's looking for.

If I was shopping for myself, I would be very disappointed in the price:features ratio and the lack of customization as I would be aiming for the high end.

MPP discounts are only $22 off of the base XPS 14 and $26 off of the base XPS 15 (I get 5% back also, etc for Dell Advantage, but still). I actually had problems finding the news ones on the site. If you use the pull down menu in the MPP part, you get the old model.

Hmm I would have bought the £1299 model with 10% off and then 8% cashback if I could confirm it had the backlit keyboard and also if the 1TB drive actually came with the 32GB MSata.

It's funny that the £1199 model with 1TB has 32GB MSata but the more expensive top of the line model doesn't.........

Very nice, so Dell expects me to pay around €1350,- for a laptop when I can get about the same specs in an Asus N56, no thanks Dell.

I just bought the new Dell XPS 15, was able to talk to a rep and he got me the xbox student deal, and I saved 5% with dell advantage. Spent about 1700 total, will have the XPS 15 Friday

What really annoying me with Dell Japan is that they are too lazy to convert the currency :(

They just simply assumed 1 USD=100 JPY.

For example, the base price for XPS 15 in US is $1299, the Japan price is about 129,900 yen. The correct conversion JPY to USD for 129,900 yen is about $1600!! So, in Japan we pay roughly 23% more than in US for Dell products. I know currency is fluctuating day by day but at least they should shift to more accurate price range.

Interesting that HP Japan and Apple Japan prices are almost identical to their US counterparts. Why Dell Japan cannot do the same thing?

I understand everybody is using US price for local base price calculation.
