Ok, well here it says Li-Ion :S

In the US, there are ways to avoid the China import tax. We use them. I'm sure HP, Acer, Asus and all the big boys do too.
Economies of scale and the wonders of buyer behavior in the supply/demand curve. The demand curve at the moment for XPS is still high on the Y axis. Give it some time, and we'll find market equilibrium, just like HP apparently has.
XPS Screens are high quality TN panels. These are some of the few panels that were available that could meet the stringent XPS design specifications with bonded edge to edge Corning Gorilla Glass within our compressed footprint. Key Specs for reference are:
XPS 14: HD+ panel resolution with 400 Nit Brightness. The color gamut is 45%, made very realistic by Dells proprietary Color Engine Technology. Viewing angles are 45/45/20/35 (L/R/U/D)
XPS 15: FHD+ panel resolution with 350 Nit Brightness. The color gamut is 60%, made very realistic by Dells proprietary Color Engine Technology. Viewing angles are 60/60/50/50 (L/R/U/D)
(^Had that one ready for launch day a week ago.^)
Guys, I don't want to bash my co-workers, so I'll just say this- Take heed of Rev's 2 posts. I know the guy personally. He is freaking awesome at his job, and he knows how to talk to people. His team can assist with finding the best deals available to us. There may be online coupons somewhere that they are not aware of, but they do have access to some promotions sometimes that you can't find elsewhere. Think of him as a sales assistant, and if you want to place an order through his team, he can make that happen as well.
They start hitting retail outlets next week. They should cascade down to most major outlets in the following days/weeks.
Agree with the sentiment here. You should always buy what makes more sense to you.
I'm looking into this one. Will post back what I hear.
I'm looking into this one. Will post back what I hear. My guess is the mSATA drive is a cache drive only.
I'll get around to this when I can. Totally swamped right now.
No offense to Asus. They make great stuff, but I don't think this is an oranges to oranges comparison. <-See what I did there? But seriously, 2 different target markets. Better comparison is the Inspiron R S/E.
Again, take heed, my peoples.
No idea. Sorry. Rev could probably find out if you post on his thread.
My tests showed not overheating issues. I think downlix found the same.
My guess is a week or two for Outlet. -

I guess I should say my concern was that with 1 fan, it will have to work overtime to cool the laptop. Engadget stated the fan on the XPS 14 is noticeable with a simple YouTube video. I hate to see how the XPS 15 turns out.
I'm sure someone will repaste it ASAP and find better results. Hopefully it'll lower fan noise. -
Unfortunately it is not as simple as looking up the current exchange rate and doing some simple math. Depending on what country the product is going to, there can be import taxes, duties, customs broker fees, processing fees, etc. Then since i'm sure Dell is not shipping these notebooks by boat initially, there is always the cost of Air-Freight and it's associated fees.
I used to run the North American operations for a German Audi/VW tuning company and shipping Air-Freight would usually add about 20% to a products retail price. -

I've just had it confirmed by a Dell chat rep person that a backlit keyboard is a standard feature for this laptop and even though it isn't mentioned, will arrive with one.
-
Ok will receive the XPS in 10 days from now...
saved 500 € , thank you Dell !!! -
anybody have any experience with this?
-
How did ya do that then?
-
Dell chat rep told me that no backlit keyboard option in Spain for XPS15. Is it true?
-
You had an i5 with gt630, I'm a little scared about the i7-gt640 combo
I understand this concept, but speaking about demands, why not providing backlit keyboards and blu-ray drives in every region?
Let's remember that Dell sells only online, so you don't have to pay an extra for resellers' earn, but price is on the same lines...Little weird IMHO -
Well, I had to speak to a couple to get a good answer. The first couple who didn't really know anything about the product just gave me the usual, "it isn't standard and is an option" stuff but then I spoke to someone who seemed to know a bit about the product and he confirmed it is standard to have a backlit keyboard.
Anyway, I'm keeping the conversation log and if it were to turn up without, I'd just send it back
-
i understand your concern and can assure you that i have heard nothing about the notebook overheating.
-
Does anyone know when the laptops will be available to purchase on bestbuy.com or in the store?
-
@Bill, any comment on the regional SKU changes? Can we expect to see these restrictions lifted any time soon? No backlit keyboard and bluray player are dealbreakers for me and if it doesn't change quickly, I've waited too long for this already unfortunately and it'll be a sale lost.

Lol this made my day
, on an otherwise disappointing release of the XPS

I keep checking BB and Amazon. Strange how they leaked the pages a week(s) ago and on launch day/NDA-lift there's nothing. Bill said awhile back they should show up in BB stores by the end of next week. I'd look for them to launch online on BB/A in the next 24-72 hours. Maybe Bill has more definite dates and numbers. -
There's no more Full HD available on the L502X. Probably for this exact reason--who in their right mind wouldn't go for that computer instead of the new one?
-
Thanks! I see myself hitting F5 a lot in the near future
I got my E6400 Latitude through Outlet and have a 3 year CompleteCare on it. I've replaced just about the entire laptop at this point due my several derps on my part (FYI: Monster does not go well with the keyboard or motherboard). I'll probably replace the screen before handing it down to the next user, as I think it's still the original one and has some definite wear/tear, and I doubt I'll have any issue doing that. I usually notice a problem, check it out, chat online w/Dell tech support, have them send me the parts (usually next day air), I repair/replace it myself, and send the parts back prepaid. For $450 I've never seen anything as easy or comprehensive as Dell's support.
Very true. My main concern is accidental damage (read above), but I also hate having to replace a working part with another. If the difference in price from the HDD to SSD is $150 MSRP, and the SSD is $250 MSRP, I'd hopefully end up saving somewhere in between that (Dell markup loss). Then it's covered by warranty and I get quick replacements if necessary (and out-of-stock upgrades if it dies any they only have new models). Yes, I get a 500GB HDD to play with, but I've gone almost entirely SSD now. A slow, 500GB HDD just doesn't make sense for my usage.
And again, have a 256GB Samsung 830 in that model that Engadget tested and it would've been a much better showing for the system. It's sad when lesser processors/GPUs best a good system simply because of the data drive. -
I'm starting to think the same thing...
-
I'm nervous to buy a dell from best buy cause i bought 2 13 ultrabooks from there and both of them had bad networking cards...hopefully this time itll be okay..
-
Warranty is the generally the same. With the XPS model I purchased it was something like $39 to upgrade from the standard 1 year warranty it came with to the premium phone support. Or the reps would try and upsell to longer or full accidental damage warranties.
-
Just wondering: have you decided between the envy and dell? With the 200 dollar student discount, I think im leaning toward the dell. It's a tough decision though. My only concern is overheating because downlinx wasn't able to test the i7 and 640
-
ITA.
Granted, the L502X is heavy and chunkier than the 521 but it's a nice design with very good specs and a KICKASS screen for a lot less.
What an aggravating day
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
I wouldn't buy the Dell from BB. When I ultimately pull the trigger I'll be using an MPP/EPP discount, so it'll have to go directly through Dell. However, it will nice to play with an XPS in a BB for the first time, and the XPS 13 doesn't count because it's a different machine entirely. -
Where you from bungral? I need to know to understand if your are not in US.
-
I think Dell has done a fantastic job on the XPS15 personally. The only thing holding me back is price - if we can see coupons on the level of the HP envy, then I definitely think we could see a much more competitive product.
Also, what is dell outlet? Selling pre-owned products, refurbished, or how does it work? -
Downlinx,
Any comment on the 1080p 15.6" screen? I'm worried that text is going to appear almost microscopic. -
Sorry. Forgot to mention. Backlit keyboard is standard on all configs in all regions. The spare parts tool isn't yet populated, so I can't confirm, but I think we don't even have a non-backlit part number.
-
I see the new XPS 15 has launched in the US, but does anyone know when it will be launched in Canada?
-
Well I'd buy it online. and reason is that i have a $1,080 best buy gift card that will be purchasing most of my Xps 14 soo i really dont have a choice unfortunately
i'd love to buy from dell.com but cant. plus ill get the xbox from best buy and i can resell it
-
How on earth did you get a $1080 BB gift card?
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
It's funny you said that because I also have about $800 in BB gift cards, but I'll be using that on the extras, peripherals, new phone stuff, etc. -
They just sent out emails, New! XPS 15 laptop details â Entertainment laptop | Dell Canada not an easy way to find it directly from the site.
-
Yeah it's because of the crisis... Now you better buy a bunch of candles.
-
Bought a xps 13 ultrabook with part cash part bb gift card and returned it and just had it all put on a gift card because i knew i was gonna buy my new laptop there anyway.
-
Yeah but i dont have $1,200 laying around.

Missing backlit keyboard in Italy (and maybe in other places)
I was about to drop 1898€ for the model with the 512MB SSD using a coupon, but it seems the backlit keyboard is not avaliable. I contacted a DELL representative and she confirmed that even the international backlit keyboard is not avaliable, at least in Italy.
Well, I'll wait and in the meantime I'll check other options, since the coupon expires today. My XPS1340 will serve me a bit more.
I understand that DELL may not have a structure/business model to sustain a "day 1" launch, but I think that trying to sell a system like that without backlit keyboard is a little insulting... I wonder if less informed buyers will get angry.
edit: posted before reading bill ^^'' -
Bill, this is a deal breaker for me. I also need to buy in the next 24hrs to take advantage of a voucher. If it turns up and does not have backlit, am I able to return hassle free without getting charged restocking in UK?
Secondly as you are around, what is the deal with Blu-Ray? I messaged you on twitter to get the size of the drive and also when it is coming in stock for the UK?
Finally will the configuration options get better over time? -
Guys, read bill's post ONE page back (404 I believe). Backlit keyboards are standard across all models. Bill doesn't even think that they HAVE a non backlit part for it.
I am much more likely to trust bill than some random Dell Rep who has (multiples of them) proven themselves incompetent (atm) in regards to the XPS15. Not that THEY are, but clearly they don't seem to know much about what's going on
-
Sure about that? Looking at the config on the new XPS in Norway, it lists "integrated nordic multilingual keyboard". Not a word about backlit. Which, TBH sucks.
It only comes with W7HP too, there's no choice for W7P or Ultimate. And no Blu-Ray option either.
Can I assume that the choices will expand after some time? Buying a laptop w/W7HP is off the table for me (even if buying for my wife).
Well, Dells norwegian site doesn't list backlit keyboard. They didn't for L502x either. If its true for Norway, it might be true for other markets as well. I'm guessing Bill is wrong. But I'll happily accept being proven wrong myself. -
That is some half-assed engineering.
-
I'm sorry but $1699 for the i7 model with 640m graphics?! Sony, Vizio, hell even HP's premium laptops cost less with similar (better Vizio and HP) specs for the price. In my opinion this is a step in the wrong direction for Dell, and I'm only ranting because I wanted this laptop sooo badly but now this just left my budget range for me to even consider it
.
-
anybody have an idea when the xps15 will appear in singapore? dell website only listed xps14. im holding my self from purchasing the y580. don't know how long i can wait.
-
Well for reference I just went to the US site and clicked configure, it does not mention backlit either. I have highlighted the keyboard section...

Dell outs XPS 14 with optional mobile broadband, XPS 15 with Kepler graphics -- Engadget
Video quick review of the XPS14 + XPS15 (not sure it has been posted, though sorry if i miss it ...so many posts today !) -
3 different reps told me that backlit italian keyboard is not available, do you think it could be due to a temporary unavailability? I know you work in US, but do you think we can still hope to have a backlit italian keyboard and a blu-ray option?
