I was complaining to a sales rep about the price and the just emailed me an official quote for the xps 14, gt 630m, i5, 500GB + 32GB mSata at €899. I think he forgot to add VAT but does that matter? Can I buy it for this price now?

I could buy two 3rd generation Ivy Thinkpads with the same CPU, GPU (albeit it’s GDDR 3 and Edge) and then buy two Samsung 256GB SSD for them and it works at $100 more expensive than Dell’s entry level XPS 15 model.

Trying to figure out why the next model which has a weaker CPU and GPU is the same price as an Alienware M14x. I like that here the i5 comes as standard with the GT640m but I would have to almost double the price to get the option that allows me a Blu-ray player. Probably pass considering for all that it still weighs 2.6kg.

XPS 14 are priced at Asus Prime prices but weigh considerably more and have worse specs. Disappointing. Maybe the refresh of the 13 will be more attractive, that’s a better deal even now than the XPS 14.

Only thing bugging me now and stopping me buying is that in upping the i5 to i7 in the highest end model on the UK site, they have removed the 32GB MSata for some reason.

Why on earth would I want the faster processor but in turn slow down my data read writes?

It took me 3 reps from Dell in order to get my 3 different coupons validating my 400€ discount, at first they pretended it's not possible to get more than one discount.. See everything happens you just need to be persistent ! ;-)

0% chance, but even with a better price, I probably still wouldn't get it due to the insane amount of work just to swap simple components.

I just ordered mine - I got the XPS15 i7 with 8GB RAM and 750/32GB drive and 6/27 shipment. With my supplier discount I ended up at $1585+tax with next day delivery. My only concern is at checkout, it says delivery on 6/28 but on my confirmation it says delivery by 7/10.

I was looking at the HP Envys but didn't find a comparable one at any price -- none of the 1080p Envys have a 2GB video card or a 32GB mSATA as standard or an option. Maybe someone could point me to one?

(I find all of the trolling and whining going on here hilarious -- I predicted it 2 weeks ago :)

No changes in Costa Rican site yet, and if they are going to be I'm not gonna buy right away, I was thinking In buy the 15" around december but I'm really think about it, I simply don't like the new one, I'm even thinking in buy the l502x, the only thing I care and wait for the l521x was for the Ivi Bridge and the GT640m. I have been saving money for the XPS and I got around US$2000 but my limit budget was around US$1200 with coupons, shipping ant taxes added

no the newer one is better than the older one. my guess is that they had these display's and wanted to get beta tests out so they used them.

Which Ivy thinkpads, what specs and prices? I find it hard to believe. Not to mention the (an understatement) screens that lenovo insist on putting into their laptops (apart from the t530 and W series)

I am very glad that Dell is not making a XPS 17 this time around and has strayed me away from the XPS brand this time around. Not too thrilled with the price scheme anyways with the minimum $1699 for an i7 processor for the XPS 15 now that the customization of laptops is going out the window.

I will be looking at the 17R Special Edition laptop which fits my needs for the price point and is a beauty. I love the customization that is available on the laptop from the underside and the skullcandy subwoofer/speakers.

Just wondering if there's something I'm missing, but besides the $200 gift card, are there other discounts in the MPP program (I can't find anymore).

Also @Bill. Will there be more hardware customization options in the future?

Firstly, backlit keyboard is standard on XPS 14 and 15. There is not even a non-backlit keyboard qualified for any region. No matter what anyone tells you, they ship with backlit keyboards. If you happen to get one with a standard keyboard, I'll eat my hat.

It only ships with backlit keyboard. If you get one that's not backlit, I'll personally get you a return with no restocking fee set up, or I'll get someone to send you a backlit keyboard.
I'm still checking on BD. I may not have any news until tomorrow.
It's backlit. Isn't MSFT running an upgrade program at a reasonable price these days? Not that that's the official corporate response, but I think you can get W7P pretty cheap. My guess is that route would be the same or cheaper than what we'd offer it as at point of sale.
I just looked at Dell Norway.
"Keeping up both day and night. With up to eleven hours of battery life 1 and a backlit keyboard keeps ultra slim XPS 14 Ultra Book follow you without problems"
My guess is they don't call it out in the config details because it's a standard feature.
    Backlit is a standard feature.
No temporary supply chain issues. Backlit is a standard feature.

Inspiron R S/E might be something to put on your radar.

    I'm checking into this.
You may want to ask Rev about the MPP discount. His sales assistance thread is here. He covers Alienware and all Dell consumer products.
No idea on future config options.

I agree. I returned my Dell refurb because of a Dell screw-up and was excited enough about this product to wait for the release. Even with some pretty heavy coupon discounting, this product is pricey.

Now I'm left debating whether to get a steal on an old model XPS(even if it means gambling on another refurb) or jumping over to HP or waiting to see how Costco prices the Vizio.

Well I guess insane is a bit much :) But one DIMM you need to disassemble the whole laptop to access, and the other DIMM and drive you have to remove the entire bottom of the laptop and some other things. Weird, now the manual is not found on the Dell site. I've only ever had to remove a panel for RAM, and most drives were in the same panel, or you just took out some screws and slid the drive out the side.

This is not what I'd call a super easy system to work on. In the drive for thinner, you lose a lot of that ability to pop in some RAM or swap out the HDD. If you are looking for convenient serviceability, we have a lot of systems that fit that mold- Latitude, most Vostros, Inspiron R S/E (seriously, check that one out), and so on. I think in this class of high-end, thin laptop, you will be hard pressed to find more than a few examples that are as easy to disassemble as a Latitude or typical Inspiron.

I find that removing 10 screws or so to have access to everything (aside from the one DIMM) is very convenient as compared to compartments that have to tear apart the entire frame to reach more complicated components.

I third that :) coupons please!

I think lack of blu-ray reader it's not a worrying thing.
Usually Dell prices this option about 100€, and you can buy for same price a blu-ray burner, the only problem it's to find one that is slot-in and fit perfectly in XPS15.
Therefore with the same price of Dell blu-ray option you have a blu-ray burner + DVD burner included in XPS

Nah, haven't decided yet. I like the design more of the XPS and I have no problem affording, it's just that I think their price points & lack of customization are a joke. Also the lack of access to RAM, etc is annoying. I'm in no hurry to buy though really, as I just built a new desktop last month.

I have no use for slow 5400rpm drives by the way. What is this, 2006?

Yea, Dell really shot themselves in the foot this time. Over confident thus overestimated the demand & supply, affecting their global launch prices. For the same premium XPS price you could buy a MBPrD, or 2 in the Windows competitors, with equal or better specs to that of a maxed out XPS 15. Is dell charging 60% brand/chassis, and 40% in Specs with their inflated price?
    Choices
    Either 1- XPS 15(maxed out)/ MBPrD or.. 2 of:
    HP Dv6t (Gt 650m) - $950
    HP Envy (7750m) - $1200
    Lenovo Y580 (660m) - $1100
    Msi GE60 (GTX 660m) - $1100
    Sager NP9150 (670+) - $1200
    Vizio – ($1100)

aww man i was so excited for the release of the new XPS 15, but having to pay $1700 for i7+640m is a huge let down. I think I'll probably be going with the Envy 15 which has better specs for $1100+$180 for 3 year onsite support. I really wish dell would release coupons sooner, but i'll be leaving for college in august so time is important.

re: michaeljean's comment...is the XPS 15 loud as well? I only saw a review for the 14 mentioning that. Maybe I missed it for the 15.

    Looks good enough for me...

But what's this so-called "Dell's proprietary Color Engine" ? What does it do? It can't possibly make the hardware any better... Where are these "deficiencies" that could be corrected thought this "technology" ?

Haha, i think he mentioned it already, if you wade back through like 60 pages of rants you might find it.

It sucks that there wasnt a 500€ drop on the Envy in Europe, in The Netherlands the Envy 15 en 14 aren't even out yet... Nor is the Lenovo Y580.

Props to DELL for doing a worldwide launch, even though you guys were high when you decided on pricing.
