its not the bezel that limit panel options is the face the the signature DELL RBG L.E.D screen pulls more power and without the option use a larger battery or a user swapped battery they have to put preference in battery life.the current panel offers 60% of the colour gamut where the RGB L.E.D screen offers 72% which is a 12% drop and should not be noticeable by most users unless you a doing professional photo or video editing for example to my eye the screen will be awesome to a professional maybe not. also the screen is glued to the glass so offering more than one panel may increase cost and with the way the screen its self is designed its not easy to change the panel

screen glued to glass then glass+ screen + camera/mic assembly is bonded to the aluminum cover = better strength and durability

Here's what I heard on that question:

    - The glass is laminated to the panel, so no 'air gap.' He said that this improved brightness by cutting internal reflection.

    - Gorilla Glass itself does not limit the gamut of the panel.

    - He assumed the AUO panel being referenced is the 72% [NTSC?] unit [as opposed to the B+RG @ 96%?]

    - The gamut is 60%. Dell has a utility that modulates saturation in order to effective increase gamut. He said that in his daily work, he doesn't notice the difference between 60% and 72%, but that perhaps someone who is a professional photographer would notice.

    - He said that considerations of power consumption limit usage of technologies other than WLED. [He didn't elaborate much on this issue - maybe he's referring to as compared to high-gamut technologies such as B+RG?]

    - He said that WLED technology is improving such that, in the future, higher gamut will be possible. He also referenced technologies such as IPS, in the future, helping to further advance display quality (such as through better viewing angles).

[Note: I interpreted this poster's question as inquiring about whether the choice to use Gorilla Glass limited the selection of panels that would fit e.g. dimensional, thermal, and other specifications that the previous [L502X] lid design was able to accommodate. It appears that he interpreted it as meaning something like "does Gorilla Glass itself impute properties which limit the performance of any panel you might choose." I am not sure which was the proper interpretation of the poster's question]

Okay, that's all I remember off the top of my head. Only saw it once, so it's hard to remember everything.

So do I, but Dell's is clearly a hybrid, whereas Surface is trying to find a common ground between the iPad and all other known tablets, i.e. Android-based.

Just called dell and the 256gb SSD option is not available yet. It MAY be in the future, not sure what they were talking about in the live feed but if they said the 256gb SSD is an option in the 14 and/or 15 xps then it's going to be a future option. Only SSD option currently in both models is 512gb even when you ask via telephone to put in 256gb.

Also, they said the shipping date is around July 6th for all of the XPS models currently. Why not just wait til the end of this week for Best Buy to get the models...? They get shipments in Tuesdays and Fridays. Will probably be available Saturday.

I didn't hear anything about contrast ratio, but maybe it was mentioned at some point and I didn't catch it. I started watching in the middle of the discussion.

I seem to recall it being mentioned (albeit very briefly) that a 256GB option would appear later in the fall. I may be mistaken, though.

But are we talking about 750GB + 256GB mSATA or just a single 256GB SSD? I'm waiting on the latter option simply to lighten both the final cost and the overall weight by a couple of ounces. I couldn't discern a definitive answer of which it would be.

We're talking about the main hard drive being 256gb SSD. Whether that will come with the 32gb separate one too, i dont know.

From what I gathered it is already possible to order one with a 256GB mSATA SSD (according to a del rep... see my previous post). I would also love an option for a single 256GB SSD

I'm trying to buy the XPS 15, it looks killer, love the 14 but I need 1080p. I'm looking at the top ($1999) config. Would prefer 750GB 7200rpm over 1TB 5400 but not available.

    My main issue
On a chat w/ Dell now, they can't find how do order TPM. On Dell XPS 14 and 15 laptops complete our most competitive XPS lineup ever - Direct2Dell - Direct2Dell - Dell Community it says TPM is available, but it's not showing as an option on either home or small biz sites. Small biz doesn't even have a top config (max is $1699 w/ 8GB RAM etc.), and though it mentions TPM as an option in small biz, the guy on the chat can't confirm it's available nor how to order it, says it's avialable on 13 only, though announcement makes clear it's available on 14 and 15.

Perhaps TPM is actually on motherboard on all already? That would work, as soon as I can confirm whether it's there, or how to get it on the top $1999 config, I'm ready to pull the trigger and order

Well, here's my (possibly erroneous) recollection of that part of the conversation

    - You can use the 32GB mSATA SSD as a boot drive, but it was not recommended. He made some reference to efficiency and, as I understood, suggested that the performance gain was not so significant that it would be advantageous over a cache configuration in terms of overall user experience.

    - Optimally, one would use a larger drive for OS installation, such as a 128GB mSATA drive. I seem to recall he suggested one would probably have to replace the 32GB drive with another mSATA drive to really make SSD-based boot practicable.

    - He mentioned having a 256GB option in the future.

My interpretation, overall, is that he viewed the mSATA SSD + HDD combination as achieving an optimal balance between performance and storage. Since he seemed to focus more on talking about mSATA SSDs during that discussion, and since such SSDs are available (e.g. 256GB PM830 from Samsung), I was inclined to interpret his response as indicating the appearance of an mSATA SSD.

However, it wasn't clear to me overall, either.

Thanks. And this is what's so frustrating. The L502x had the possibility of a 256 or 512. Now, Dell is testing the waters to see if their pre-baked builds can make everyone happy. I'm willing to pay more for what I want. And I know I could buy an SSD and install it myself -- I've done that, no problem. But I shouldn't have to, particularly given the prices Dell is asking for when it comes to these undesirable specs. I was also disappointed with their answer about the 3612 being the most optimal CPU, as if there will never be another option. /smh

Trusted Platform Module... It's for security features such as storing crypto keys for encryption.

Some points to be raised here: If the B+RG is so battery-costly(which i do not think so and i wanna see a metric) a retina type won't consume more? And why Dell does not let user choose what he wants? Furthermore, next time since we are focusing on battery we should set brightness to the lowest without being able to be changed.
He did not define those material besides alluminium and gorilla glass. How this justificate a 60% rise from previous model, when someone can pay for full 4 year warrant an extra 449$ which is a considerable amount

Yeah compared to the low end, starter CPU configs offered by every other manufacturer. But compared to the top i7 mobile CPUs it's a ~20% hit on performance, which is starting to get significant. I don't see why they wouldn't offer a 3720QM at the very least, considering they keep emphasizing how this is supposedly a "premium" notebook.

Please give us at least some customization options in the future for SSD, better CPU and to add/takeout blu-ray. The $1699 actually looks better than the top config, but I would still need to add more RAM, put in an SSD and even then I'm still stuck with an average CPU and coming out around $2,000 after upgrades.

You bring up an even better point. I understand Dell is shooting to get good battery life out of these, but why not let the user choose if they want to put in a high end i7 CPU and better screen, compromising battery life in the process? For me, battery life is near the bottom of my needs. I'm rarely away from an outlet for more than a few hours at a time. This is where customization and Dell's (apparently) old business model was such a great factor in me choosing Dell for my last 2 purchases.

    B156HW01 v7:
    270 cd/m typ.
    95% gamut
    Backlight power consumption: 8.5w typ.

    B156HW01 v0
    300 cd/m typ.
    60% gamut

There you go. Right from the datasheets. Same panel, different backlight. Both datasheets list the 'logic/LCD drive voltage' at 3.3v and 606mA.

as for the 3612 and the 640m ..... reasoning for that is because of power draw and the thermal threshold or limits set by dell for the system a 650m would use more power and require a 10w increase in which to cool it ie more powerful and noisy fan ... i would be good with the 15 version with GB of ram and a 640m if the price were cheaper -_- but Toshiba and Lenovo all are around the same price what makes the XPS stand out build quality and attention to detail like apple ..

the justification for the price increase is because of the gorilla glass to an extent but mostly to the machined aluminum frame ... as he said there is only one player doing the aluminum machining process and i'm guessing its the same company that does it for apple I.E y both are so expensive if there is one company doing aluminum machining to the intricate levels of detail apple and dell wants they can charge a premium for it so the end user price will be high until such time more players step into the machine aluminum business with the required level of detail needed the magnesium metal used will play a factor in cost .... limited space in the chassis is the cause of the limited mid level specs along with heat and power draw concerns ...... sorry to say you are paying for the looks / durability of the system here

makes me want Microsoft to design a laptop badly
the perimeter venting is a nice idea for keeping systems cool and allowing sound to exit the system while keeping a uni-body design and keeping it a clean design language forged from full magnesium

Ok, so people who might have bought the XPS 14, how did you get discounts on it/reduce the price? I really want the 1199$ model, (just need a GT630M) and if I can find a way to get enough money off, I would probably pick it over other options. That thing is just so nice ^.^ even if it's slightly less powerful.

If you're a student, were you able to negotiate the 200$ gift card to get it off of the XPS itself or anything like that?

LOL I hadn't even noticed yet that they are bending us over for default warranty. Another $200 for a 2 year warranty and $300 for 3 year coverage? Why force us to get this 'premium' warranty? I don't need accidental coverage or LoJack. All I need is the limited hardware warranty.

This is certainly one way for Dell to maximize their profit margins - force feed us features we don't want and leave out stuff that nearly everyone expects like SSD.

i wanna open my own computer company .. from a design point of view i see where i can make space in the case for a sub woofer even a larger battery

and still keep the looks / durability and reason for price is the firm doing the machining of aluminum .... they are capitalizing on their monopoly its a nice system im not really a power user so a 128 gb ssd, i5 3210m, gt640m/650m, a 72 watt hour battery, 1080p and a good 2.1 sound system is all i need if i can get that spec in the xps @ 1100 starting ill be happier

Did anyone in the G+ hangout ask about temperatures? I saw something about it being pretty quiet until it's under full load, but there is only one fan right?

Also does it look easy to swap out the ODD with a 2nd hard drive? Would be nice to get rid of some weight.

You can get a 200$ gift card when you buy the laptop (or an Xbox) if you qualify for a student discount + additional 5% cashback in dell gift card with Dell Advantage + MPP -> ~400$, but 300$ you cannot use with this purchase. And if you talk on the phone and be insistent enough, they can give you a 100$ discount (one rep tried to give me that - don't know if others will do it though).

Oh dear Dell, why don't you have the customization available right from the get-go??? I don't want a blu-ray player, I don't want 128mSATA+1tbHDD... I was so happy 4 years ago when I got my XPS m1330 (and I am writing this message from that machine) and I could fully configure everything that I sought...

So, I wonder why they said not to use the 32 GB SSD as a boot drive. I was thinking that as a boot drive and another 830 as a storage drive

Hahahaha... I swear I just saw a donkey flying in the sky (albeit in Italy it's 1.49 AM)... Damn, why are you guys putting your faces in such kind of answers...

Saying "Takes too much of power" sounds better than "We must toss in it the least expensive components just to grab attention, but hey man, you can get a machined aluminum lid and Gorilla glass"... I repeat myself, this is the THIRD downgrade in screen quality in 3 years... 95% gamut RGB to 92% Wled to 60%... but the prices jumped high of about 300€...
Ah, but you may throw in a retina display... So, dear Dell, this won't require more energy? You are cutting your legs by yourself...

35W quad has benefit in thermal power? Damn, so it implies that your thermal dissipation system is in the "right what we need - let's hope they won't use it in a >35°C room" zone... but you're asking for gold-plated prices...

Let's spoke clearly, YOU ARE NOT APPLE, you can't sell just by your name itself...
