Made into the hangout. Pretty cool feature of Google+. This is a great way to learn more about the XPS, and hopefully decide what I am going to purchase.

Is there a way to watch from Google+ instead of youtube since I didn't make it in?

Thanks for the update... It will be interesting to see what options are available when (if) everything is restored.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but will the hangout video be available later on? I can't watch it live, but I'd still like to see it.

Best option is to have the G+ page open and watch for someone to drop while you watch the YT stream. If you have a question, post it here. I'll drop it in.

I don't think so if the hangout is full, but what they have on youtube is exactly what I am seeing within Google+.

Dell XPS 14 product preview - Laptop - Trusted Reviews

    Quote:

"Build quality is accordingly superb. If the new XPS entrants are not the best-built laptops we’ve yet seen, they’re certainly up there. We realise this is a sweeping statement, but these puppies could make a MacBook Pro feel slightly inadequate."

@ Bill that was me asking about the fan noise. :p

Anyway guys, they reckon the fan is almost silent unless it is under extreme stress. Also the silicone on the bottom makes it much cooler to touch.

Nothing can be done with regards ordering til tmoz, unless there is another question? As I commented earlier, this is designed to be a direct competitor to the 13" and 15" MBP. He specified that only Apple can compare on the materials. MSATA is bootable, and the OS can be run from it. 17" XPS is confirmed to be no more. With regards CPU quad choice, purely for battery reasons, only makes 10% difference. Also tablet is "more in line with XPS brand", so it's pretty certain to be coming as speculated in a thread down below.

    Yes, many questions:

Why does the most expensive model come with the least-performing hard drive.
    Where are the SSD options?
Where is the blue-ray drive option?
Where's the ability to order a differnet amount of RAM?

It's all very perlexing, especially the first one (the two 'cheaper' models either have M-SATA and 7200 drives, the most expensive (the only one with i7) is a 5400.). Bonkers.

    Why no 650m?
Comes down to TDP and thermals. For a 14% performance increase we couldn't justify spinning the fan up anymore and the battery drain.
Not M14x protection as I had stated previously. Sorry for not doing due diligence on that one and getting the right answer the first time.

Sounds like no XPS 17 coming. They are focusing on portability, and with the higher resolutions on smaller screens it doesn't seem necessary to have the extra size/weight.

I'm wondering about the situation of the fan on the 14. Two reviews specifically called it out. I expect the fan to be reasonably noisy under high load, but what's the noise like under light to moderate load (e.g. watching some videos, listening to music, doing a lot of document editing, that sort of thing).

    I don't have a YT account >.<

    I think I see Bill there! I can't tell, though. I don't see anyone huge there :p

Yes, it was done to increase build quality and protect the screen. He mentioned that screens can be damaged by closing the lid and making contact with the keyboard. He said that it adds weight to the machine but makes it a more solidly built machine. Also, it did not contribute to having fewer options for panels, but rather the thin bezel limits panel options. He alluded to more screen options in the future, with higher resolution and IPS being the direction many are headed, particularly once Windows 8 hits (in reference to higher resolution, not IPS).

they said SSD options are coming and that a 256 will be available
as for ram i did not hear any thing about that

Quick summary of the questions from the Google+ Dell XPS Hangout that I can remember lol:
    1. Why no B+RGB? - Takes too much power essentially, and the one currently inside is very good with 60% Gamut. Plus when Windows 8 launches he hinted at MBP Retina type displays as an option as well as IPS.
    2. Why so expensive? - Premium materials, machined aluminium and there is only one competitor with same quality - Apple which is their target market, NOT the Envy etc.
    3. Can you get a bigger MSATA? - Yes up to 256gb, but testing has shown for the majority 16gb is good enough to see the gains.
    4. Is MSATA Bootable? - Yes, you can load and boot windows from it.
    5. Why only 35W Quad? Only 10% difference in performance. The benefits from a thermal and battery point of view outweighed the negatives.
    6. Why no GT 650M? Again battery and thermals.
    7. Will there be an XPS tablet? - No direct answer, but it is "more in line with the XPS brand"
    8. Will there be a 17" version? - No
    @CQGhost - I saw ya lol!

    Hmm ok then...

So Win 8 is October... I know you can't wait forever on new products as you'll never end up buying one but it seems like it might be worth holding off on this for a couple / few months if it isn't an essential purchase.

It might give time for a few more options to be available and pricing to settle as well as potential for some more vouchers.

That said, I do want one now.

Edit: Also looks like DellVLog said they would look in to why the laptop has been pulled from the UK site (and all others apart from US).

I'm hoping that means 2560x1440 (which is supported by W8) as well as a multi-touch panel. But God only knows what Dell would charge for that, i.e. +$750. ;)
