Stop code on the BSOD? If memtest is passing, it's likely the same stop code every time. Can you grab it out of Event Viewer? If you want, I can find someone in tech support who's handy with that Windows minidump analyzer tool thingy and get you to email me a couple of the dumps.
Curious. Did you get the BIOS off the support site, or did the beta PM Dropbox it to you?

    Not in a million years.

Bill, BestBuy.com has the 14 at $1,048 and the 15 at $1,199. How is this possible?

Because they don't build them themselves anymore. They're now made by Compal/Foxconn so configurable options would slow down production and add cost. Shame but that's how it is.

So it seems that the UK store is back online again.

However, the Top cost model (£1299) still has no M-SATA and a 5400rpm 1TB disk, with no options for SSD.

Is this an error on the tech specs page or are they really serious that the only i7 model is compromised in the disk department?

I've mentioned it a few times, but this is a crazy decision and is the one stopping me buying.

i don't get how best buy can have the models priced $50-100 cheaper. Maybe its an exclusive price for best buy only? If so i'm in luck because i'm buying mine there .

Looks like BestBuy doesn't include accidental damage coverage on their configs. That would explain the price difference in their favor.

Even if they do that they could always customize them locally before they ship them.... simple things like RAM, HDD and mSATA.

Errrrrm The end user can customise all those things. More cheaply & you can source the best components. If Dell put an SSD in you might end up with a crap one. I'd rather source my own.

It's more expensive that way...Especially when Dell is already over charging a little right now

I've been speaking to a Dell Rep, and she said that there will be new discounts tomorrow and one for the XPS will likely be included. Also, I got confirmation that more configuration/ customization options will be available in the coming days/ weeks. Nice!

My point was to compare 2 identical displays where only the backlicht differs. I picked the 2 that had similar maximum brightness.

Wrong. Dell charge something like £80 for an extra 4GB RAM for example. You can buy your own for £20.

The SSD only option is available on the business side of the UK website. If you go to "For Home"-->"Laptops", you won't find the SSD only option. Don't know why this is. See here New! XPS 15 laptop details | Dell UK

6-cell battery is listed on the Best Buy specs vs. 9-cell from Dell. Is this a mistake, Bill? If not, it seems that buying from Best Buy will result in lower battery life. Also, hardware warranty is listed as limited (as mentioned above). Bill, are these the factors influencing the best buy price? I'd be very interested to know if these specs were accurate.

from what he told me, it seems as if they're the same device you'd get at dell.com but Best Buy had a slimmer margin and found it better to price them a tad lower. Those are the words of Bill himself in a PM

I agree that SHOULD happen, but it does add another step. If you swap out HDD or mSATA locally you are going to have to have teams available to image systems, then testing teams to make sure they boot, etc.

Thats how it was explained to me by my phone sales rep. The basic hardware warranty is all thats included on models sold at best buy.

    From Dell's site:

What do I do if I need warranty service?

Before the warranty expires, please contact us or our authorized representatives according to the following table. Long distance telephone carrier charges may apply. Please also have your Dell Service Tag or order number available.

If you purchased through a retailer (not directly from Dell), you may be required to provide Dell with your original sales receipt from your purchase to receive any warranty service from Dell.

If you purchased through Best Buy, you must have all original sales receipts from your purchase to receive any warranty service at a Best Buy store. For Canada, if you purchased through Future Shop, you must have all original sales receipts from your purchase to receive any warranty service at a Future Shop store.

Ok, just to let ya know, this code doesn't work...

I gotta say I was about to buy one now they are back on the UK site but two things have annoyed me and now I'm just not interested for the time being. Getting a touch fed up with the site.

There is no 10% off now that works even though there was but we couldn't use it due to a site error all of yesterday.

Also, when you add the discounted (by 33%) 2 year warranty, it also FORCES you to include the 1 year accidental damage option, which by the way is also screwed as it has the same option on there twice with one costing nearly double the other.

You don't have to add the 1 year accidental damage option when you only have 1 year warranty though... Also if you do decide to choose the 2 or 3 year options, you don't have the option for ADC for the same period... Still limited to 1 year which is exceptionally dumb.

I don't think it can be mentioned enough..... The second highest US model is better than the most expensive only I7 model in the UK.

Also still not a single option for BR on any UK model.

No BluRay is a bummer, but between the Home and Business sides, there are a total of 7 different config options on the UK site, which beats the options on the US site. There's even a 512GB SSD only option, which the US store doesn't offer (yet). Personally, I like the i7 with the 750GB 7200RPM + 32GB MSATA option for £1129. Why they've priced the i5 with 1TB 5400RPM at £1199 doesn't make sense when for £70 less you get a faster processor and disk!

New! XPS 15 laptop details | Dell UK

Edit! AHHH! Sorry about that... this was mentioned earlier, but the prices on the business side don't include VAT, while the prices on the Home side DO include VAT. Figuring this into the equation makes more sense of the above price difference between the i5 and i7. Even so, at least there is one option that includes the i7 with a 7200RPM drive (which is £1374 after VAT and shipping).

My order is now saying shipped and is with UPS (UK) so the rep was wrong regarding the no fast ship option. I will be a very happy bunny if it arrives before the weekend!

To be honest I'm getting a bit fed up wi th this. The price really isn't that big a deal to me, but the lack of suitable options in the uk is really annoying.

I will have to look at third party ssd solutions for the dell...

How hard is the drive replacement on this new model?

Yep as you noticed that doesn't include VAT.

I haven't got an issue with a 5400RPM drive as long as it comes with the MSata.

Also I'm not a business so I shant be buying from the business side. I can't get the same quidco, there are no codes and on top student discount doesn't work.

Edit: And the warranty options on the business side are different... Probably better really but once that gets added on it's looking like £1600 with 3 years which is just outrageous. That's why I need codes or student discount / quidco to work.

It looks very easy... Just whip the bottom off and your good to go.

Eventually I would look at adding an SSD myself, but this woulnd't be necessary for the forseeable future if they just included the bloody MSata with the i7 model!

I probably wouldn't use the BR much but it'll likely be more expensive to source ourselves and it'll add to resale value if you ever sell it on so I'd like it there.

Basicly their opinion is the same as stated here, no Bluray, high price and the keyboard.

Price is different then in the Netherlands, which are both European countries holding the euro.

The models in the Netherlands start at 1299,-.

    This is weird.

It is easy to change yourself and will be much cheaper that a dell upgrade. Samsung 830 256GB SataIII drive is approx £145 including VAT which is a steal.

    I'm in the same situation...
I have a L501x where I swapped the BD drive for a SSD and really love it.
All i hoped for, was a L501x/L502x with a i7 and kepler GPU.
And now they released the XPS with not at all fitting specs and the new Inspiron doesn't fit either (GPU is to low, no 9-cell akku, only WLED screen) :(

So I will stay with my L501x and hope for a fitting Inspiron upgrade within the next year (1st july next year is my deadline).

    Edit:
I found this IdeaStorm vote about customization.
So if you want more customization options, then please help voting this up :)

Why are people saying there is no blu ray. Here's a video saying they have a bluray option in their laptop

Dell XPS 15 Notebook Hands On - YouTube

It may not be obtainable now but you just have to wait. Not to mention it has been mentioned here that it will be available and backlit keyboard is a standard across all ranges.

That's all fun and well, but the specs are completely the same!

And I was wrong about the price. Netherlands start at 1399,- for the i5 model!

    France only at 1199,-

As I said. Same processor, same screen, same GPU/HD and memory.

    Im puzzled

It is 9.5mm made by Panasonic or LG

BluRay is the same part as in Alienware M14R2. It should be Panasonic UJ-167

BluRay burner is UJ-267 but it will not be offered by Dell.

Really not smart put only 8GB in 2x4GB modules in the high end modules. If you don't offer 16GB option in Italy then you don't want to gain money on ram then a smart move should be offer 8GB config with one only ram module. SHould buy 16GB of ram in order to upgrade from 8gb to 16 ? No way...

why would they go with a single 8 gig stick(i know they offer it), ram runs faster in the dual channel rather than single channel, when running the same capacity of ram of course.

So if the new XPS is out of my price point, is there anything wrong with picking up the old model(502x)? Sure no Ivy Bridge but what does Ivy Bridge really offer other than a little bit lower power consumption and the new Intel graphics(which is moot with DG)?

Just the fact that its bulkier and has a lower resolution(1366 x 768) screen. Graphics are slightly less yea but that's kind of up to yourself! Sound is superior(subwoofer) and keyboard is probably slightly better so I see no reason not to go for it if you don't mind the bulkiness or screen quality.

Oh thank god. I love Dell :D now all I need to do is get 100$ off. I would totally spend 1100$ (or less :D) if I can get it out of a rep for the 630M.

Wait, can he get full drivers with the BIOS update or anything? And If there's a discount coming for the XPS soon I will be pleased :D
