Dell Outlet has some 1080 screens and 35% off. Only reason I'd look at the refurbs is for the 1080 screen.

FWIW, you are getting Dell's "premium" warranty for 1-year instead of BB's Geek Squad nonsense, though I don't think the addition of LoJack and Accidental Spill coverage is worth $120. If Dell doesn't open the floodgates of customization, the only benefit to buying direct from Dell over BB would be for the 2-3 year protection plan.

Anyone know if you can buy a service protection plan from Dell if you bought the device from BB instead? I think someone recently posted about getting service from Dell on a BB plan, but not purchasing the Dell plan aside. Anybody know?

My cousin worked in the BB's Geek Squad for a while... And if they are anything like him, I would never want any of them to put their hands on my computer...

And as I'm told, he (my cousin) was one of their best at that store, got promoted fast, etc...

I don't mean any disrespect to him (my cousin), but think about it, what kind of people do you think they hire for their "squad"?

You'd be lucky to get someone who finished high school!

In all honesty, I'm not putting down the people that work there or do that for a living. I just know that Dell's service is among the best in the industry, and I would much rather have their support. However, since I'll be "kicking the tires" of the XPS in a BB when they get them in, buying it from a brick and mortar store would be preferred. Still, I'd rather buy Dell's protection if that were possible.

Rose is displeased. What to do?

I purchased an N5010 from Best buy. I just went to Dell's website and transfered ownership from Best Buy to myself. It's listed with my other laptops on my Dell's account with the hardware warranty.

I am in Australia and the price for this laptop is ridiculous. $2000 for i7-3612QM, 8gb ram, 1TB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive with 32GB mSATA, NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 640M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM and 1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis. How can they justify this price??? I rather pay $250 more for macbook pro retina (student discount), better spec (in every aspect) and customer service. Sorry Dell, you fail big time with this new XPS. If you want to market your self as a premium product, you should introduce some thing new that we have never seen before like the retina display in the new macbook. I am a PC user and only look at this purely on value added perspective. You guys can attack me all you want but I think Dell Australia should re-examine their pricing strategy in Australia if they don't want to lose their market share to Apple. I write this not because I have anything against Dell. I just hate to see new product with not so premium features selling at premium price.

I wouldn't say it's for the brainwash... It's more of a salary question...

And also, someone more qualified wouldn't be interested to work for grandma who can't find the power switch on her computer, or for the guy who say's he's an expert but can't figure out that Internet doesn't work because he didn't plug the network cable.

I mean, Come on, what did you expedt :p :D They are not gonna have NASA engineers and rocket scientists to help you "Configure windows" for a hundred bucks when you buy a new computer.

P.S. This is not a joke, the "configure windows" service is to help you click twice with the mouse the first time you boot your computer! It's so hard to choose a username :p

Well, I guess I spoke too soon. They FINALLY got in touch with me and are going to send someone out to replace the touchscreen. (Which is, admittedly, pretty cool. My cousin's eyes practically popped out of my head when I told him someone was actually going to come to my house and fix it.)

As someone who owns such a configuration, believe me when I say that as cool as you THINK it'll be, it sucks to use a touchscreen on a laptop unless the laptop converts to a tablet.

I guess Dell really is trying to be Apple.

Yeah, this. Look in the refurbs/scratch & dents for an i7 model with the 1080p screen and the GT540 video card. If I were within my return period, I'd return the L502X I got and get one of those in a heartbeat.

EDIT: By the way, that "review" of the XPS15 linked a page or two ago is not a review. That's a hands-on filled with months-old information.

    Hi Thangnm,

I kinda agree with you (in Australia as well). If it helps, you can get a 15% discount by googling for the discount code.

I was thinking of getting either this or the MBP with retina display earlier but decided to go with dell after seeing so many positive reviews about it and the fact that I would need to spend a few hundred more to get windows on the MBP

Well the 35% Outlet off coupon I thought was for the XPS was for the Studio XPS but rep still gave me 20% off. Walked away with an i7, 1080p for under $900.

I'll use the money I saved to upgrade the RAM and get an SSD. Let's hope they send the right machine this time around.

Ehm...In my country (Italy) premium support is not included: you have to pay 50€ more for the accidental damage covering (1-year). And another 280 € (more than yesterday  ) for the simple 3-year on-site hardware support.
Ok for RAM, but if I buy a 2x8GB set RAM I'll still have payed a 2x4 set for nothing, because I won't use it. Same thing for hard disk, if you buy a 3rd party SSD you'll have bought also an HDD you didn't need.
Finally, blu-ray: where can I buy a blu-ray driver which fits in the laptop??
I know there's a video somewhere in the world, but in many countries (like Italy) blu-ray is NOT available, they simply don't care what they advertise themselves!! And they say it will NOT be available in the future.

Now, keyboard (once again): I know that Bill said that it should come with default backlit keyboard in every region. A guy from Direct2Dell told me too. Advertisement on their own site says it too. But hundreds (not joking) of Reps in Italy, Belgium, Norway and many other countries keep saying that there is NOT a backlit keyboard and it will NOT be available in the future. So...are they all fuc*ing retards?? Don't they know what they are selling? Why can't we know FOR SURE, ONCE FOREVER, what we get with this huge amount of money? Or are we supposed to spend 1 month salary with an act of faith and then keep what we get?

Bill said he would personally solve it for you (and also eat his hat) if it came without a backlight keyboard so I would say you are pretty safe.

My guess is because the earliest they could ship was yesterday and actually mine hasn't shipped yet so people most likely don't have them yet.

For UK People -there is a 10% voucher for Business Deals: FPKBKKF5MQJ9C1

This makes (with VAT and delivery) the i7 + 7200rpm drive + 32GB MSATA for £1239, plus the 5% quidco you can get.

I've gone for this as it's the best option for me. Still no BluRay, but I suspect this will not be resolved soon.

    I have a few questions:
I think it still has not published anything about the thermal dissipation in the 640M and i7 computers.
We do not know anything about the technical specifications except screen brightness and resolution. Am I right? All this seems a little strange ..

I apologize if these data have been provided but many pages to read each day and may have overlooked some

    Another question:
what exactly is a mSATA and what is the difference of a standard SSD. Is it a piece apart from the hdd or is attached to it?

Bill posted a while ago about the viewing angles as well I'm sure someone has those numbers. As for the mSATA it is separate from the HDD (looks like a big wifi card) and it caches highly used programs and speeds them up as well as boot up times. It has been confirmed that you can install the OS and programs onto the mSATA and use it like an SSD primary drive but stock it is used for caching.

Don't see how the sales rep knows there will be more config options when the planning and merchandising teams are still discussing it. Yes, we're talking about it, and that's the first time I have acknowledged that if you're keeping score at home. It's too early to gauge the likelihood of it happening yet. We're just discussing it at this point. I'll keep you updated on anything I hear.
The battery is the same on all of them. Only one battery used in each system. I had this discussion with Xps13SAM in PM, but did not realize at the time the warranty difference. That's something to consider.
I said that mostly as a guess, though I don't think I called it out as a guess. My bad. I guess in light of BBY warranty vs Dell warranty, we can guess where the margins are.

Or you could buy pretty much the same component offerings now in the Inspiron R S/E, if the particular components strike your fancy. You may prefer the Gigabyte options over the R S/E options in the end, but it's worth a study while you're waiting, IMO.
Love how he says "no bluray at this price is inexcusable." I guess he's gonna fly out to Cupertino and burn the place down when he realizes the $2800 MBP doesn't have one either...unless he has a bias...surely not, right? Being of an "expert opinion" and all.

Sitting in my weekly staff meeting now, but I think I may have this info in my inbox. I'll check and post back after the meeting.

    Thanks Elands.

so long without knowing anything about the screen quality is very bad sign ..
I do not like the fact of them to send a unit with i5 and 630M for the analysis of downlinx, especially when it seemed as proud of thermal capabilities compare to the MBPwRD. If the MBP is shown to be thermally more efficient with the 650M would be a huge disappointment

Please get with me in PM. I'll shoot you a note shortly.
If you haven't already, you may want to add Inspiron R S/E to your consideration matrix.
First, if you are under the impression that Accidental Damage coverage only covers spills, you are missing some information. It's a phenomenal offering, and at $120 per year, totally worth it IMHO.
You can use our website to transfer ownership from the account used for BBY sales to your own Dell account. At that point, you can get sales or tech support to add whatever level of warranty you want. One thing I'm not clear on is if they will allow standard warranties to be sold on XPS in the US. I doubt it, but they may require only premium support contracts for XPS. An @DellCares rep will be able to tell pretty quickly if we just have someone with a unit willing to shoot me their service tag to have them see if the tool allows the standard warranty sku to be added to an XPS.

My apologies. When I was replying to alfling I thought we were talking US instead of Italy.

No comment on intelligence level, but I've already covered the backlit topic. This is pretty much the last time I'll respond to the question- not out of rudeness or frustration, but simply to save real estate on the thread.

Thank you for the prompt explanation and reply, Bill. I will look into it as soon as I get the device talked about on this thread which may or may not exist.

Was the person above right about the 500:1 contrast? I don't remember anything official coming out like this.

I believe that if you have a dell product with a valid serial number etc, you can get sell service. A dell computer is a dell computer. I'm getting mine at BB. Should be in stores tomorrow.

Bill said they found a slimmer margin to price them in that's why they're lower
