The new XPS 17 is still pure speculation at this point... the fact nothing leaked while the new XPS 14 & 15 have been leaked so many times and Dell has included them on some of their new comparatives does not favour the hypothesis of it being released in the near future.

Interesting + confusing post in a German forum:

"habe grade mit einem Dell Mitarbeiter telefoniert und der meinte zu mir das die neuen Notebooks nicht neuen XPS 17, sondern neue Inspirion 17 sein sollen. Ich solle am besten in 1 - 2 Wochen nochmal anrufen da dann die neuen Geräte bereit sind. Der Dellmitarbeiter im Chat meinte zu mir aber das die XPS 17 auch die neue Ivy-Bridge bekommen."

    bad rookie translation: ^^

"just called with a Dell assistant and he told me that the upcoming (17") notebooks will not be new XPS 17, but new Inspiron 17. I should call again in 1 - 2 weeks because the new devices are ready then. But another Dell assistant in chat told me that XPS 17 also get Ivy Bridge."

Rule number one here: If in doubt, always assume Dell techs know nothing.

As an example, with the recent Alienware launch, and the Sandy/Ivy confusion surrounding, techs were deliberately kept in the dark from the higher-ups, so 90% of them just assumed, and ended up flooding people with wrong information.

More like "In all cases, assume the techs and CS people know nothing". It's true WAY too often in my experience (note: not limited to just Dell, most people on phones are completely clueless).

I don't see the XPS 17 getting dropped from the offering. If they do drop the 17, I'd expect the whole XPS line to disappear, or at least the non-Z ones.

No XPS 17 for this time. Confirmed on the L521x thread a while back, the inspiron SE will be the main 17 incher. It looks quite nice tbh and packs the 650M (with GDDR5?). Anyway sorry dudes !

Look for Dell-Bill_B's posts on the L521x, I don't feel like excavating a 100+ pages thread. He publicly stated there would be no L721x. Also everything including Dell's own official pages points to L521x & L421x being released very soon while nothing has leaked regarding a hypothetical L721x.

17R SE is a nice notebook at first glance, but it´s an unworthy follower for the XPS 17. No second HDD option, no Gigabit LAN, no more 9-cell battery, no more backlit keyboard (at least at German-speaking areas), no more JBL sound, and of course, not one of the typical upgrade options (CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD, ...) is available at the 17R configuration pages - so one of the most popular facility which Dell made so unique, is gone with the 17R. No more individual configured Laptops, only ready-made mainstream like all other manufacturers offers too. Awful. :(

just catching up with this thread, So does this mean there may be no new XPS 17 update for now meaning for the summer? Or the rest of the year? Or could this mean a update (even cosmetically) for the Holidays? I personally would like a cosmetic update make it look like that black XPS 16 they had before or better.

If they were to update this for the Holidays here are some things I would like to see (keep in mind this is my personal wish list)

Retina Display (like the new macbook pro) (ok I know there is no chance of this happening this year at least. (This would be a option for those who want it.

    3 USB 3.0 ports
1 Thunderbolt port(this can be a option as I realize some people may want all (4) USB 3.0 ports)

Along with the IB processor and some good SSD options also I would mind if they got rid the optical drive either (but again this could be option to choose from.

Actually the Inspiron 17R SE laptop isn't too bad at all and the base configuration is 1100 and its got all the nice specs already.

    i7 3610 processor, nvidia 650M, 8 GB RAM, 1080p display, wireless n + bluetooth, etc.

The only thing that bugs me is that Dell doesn't seem to offer nice coupon codes for the Inspiron series. Only one I could find is $25. If Dell would offer a $100 off coupon like they do with the XPS series, I am sold.

Now that new L521X's are officially up, I wonder if we'll see new L721X. I only wish Dell doesn't go Apple's way and doesn't ditch 17-inch model.

Really, not even in the near future?
17 inch laptops are not going to exist in the future :(. At least not sexy ones.
