Your lucky as mostly this laptop gets many failures.

I'm currently unable to use my laptop.I'll tell you my drivers and other info soon. This may be the cause of drives. But the score is too low except your Graphic's score.Which sounds a bit right.

    Thanks!

Make sure your CPU isn't downclocking. There are several guide for using ThrottleStop to run the CPU at faster speeds for gains.

For example, most X9000 users go upto 3.8, even 4ghz for performance.

A typical Core2Duo CPU gets an extra 200 Mhz, which helps.

Hey guys just passing by to say hi :)
It's amazing to see that youre still rocking the scene with the awesome m1730.
I kinda miss those times going nuts with sli profiles and heavy overclock to push the system to the limits.
Keep up the good work! And a big cheer to everyone such Magnus, Kade, Eleron and others!

I have one too but I hate to say there days of maxed modern gaming have come to an end. I can't even play bf3 on low. Only upgrade for u you would be the x9000 processor and 9800gtx but it's not really worth it. We are locked into a dead end

    vista home premiuim 64 bit,

I'm sorry how do I find about the driver details.

What is the maximum ram I can put in too.

Can I put in a x9000 without altering the motherboard.

I'm pretty sure that you have older drivers.Download the latest drivers from here.

    NVIDIA DRIVERS 295.73 WHQL

Also, Windows 7 is much better than Vista. However, you can check the performance after installing new drivers.

For X9000, as far as I know you can just fit it to your m1730 and you don't need a new motherboard. But as I don't have X9000, I'm not sure about it.

Max amount of Ram is 4Gb DDR2.

An X9000 will work on any M1730.

A BIOS update does wonders too.

The problem is definitely that T8100, which is slow. An X9000 goes nicely upto 4 GHz, 3.8 GHz being the sweet spot for most. Nowadays you can find one for 250-300$ or less.

Wow. 4 years of owning a M1730 and I only now find this thread.

To sum up my XPS experience:

    I started with:
    T7500 2.2 Core2Duo CPU
    4gbs Ram
    8700M GT SLI

    Now:
    x9000 2.8 Core2Xtreme XPU (Clocked at 3.4ghz, I can get 3.6 stable but didn`t like heat)
    9800M GTX SLI

My list of return to depots!

    Video Card
    Video Card
    Hard Drive
    Battery & Power Adapter
    Motherboard, Battery & Power Adapter
    Video Card
    Motherboard & Video Card.

All in all tho, its been a hell of a trip for a computer that cost me just short of 5k. I definitely learnt my lesson about shiny gaming laptops from dell tho!

I'm curious, has anyone tried to do a fan replacement/upgrade on these units? I had mine apart a few weeks ago to re-paste them and noticed that these fans are only putting out 9 CFM, at least thats what's printed on the side of them. I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to do a fan swap with something that pushes a little more air at the same draw and revolutions. Any thoughts?

Mine has been completely trouble-free. I upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit and added an OCZ Agilty II SSD and plugged it into my 48" plasma TV to use as an HTPC. I have a bluetooth keyboard, mouse, and controller and still play Skyrim and World of Tanks on it. I've been waiting for some kind of catastrophic failure for years but it just keeps humming along...

Which Bios version are you using?

Any one other using A11 bios and haven't experienced any Fan failure? Or experienced it?
    A11 makes the fan wild.

Just wanted to add that the part I've highlighted in bold is actually a very important and worthwhile solution with regards to the M1730 and its GPU troubles. Had Dell put such a concept in place, the M1730 ranks wouldn't be as thin as they are today. . . neither would some of us be on our Alienware laptops, but let's not dwell on the perks. Heh.

    hello there...

I just got some weird stuff going on with my m1730...
my GPU temperature just going up slowly until it reach aroun 95-105 degree celsius... and u know what that mean. GPU-Z shows that fans are on 100% but u hear nothing or they spin very slow. However the fans are ok and not broken or anything because if I go to bios and overclock the CPU to 3.4 then all the fans (even the graphics ones) are spinning like they should on 100% and GPU sits at around 50 something degree celsius when idle (which is normal)...

    anybody experienced something similar?
I suspect the new nvidia drivers as there have been 2 new drivers recently (296.10 the last ones) which I both installed... so now I'm downloading the older ones to see if it's going to help.. for now I have to run with all fans spinning like crazy.. which is not a problem but most of the times I just browsing or want to watch a movie and having all of them blasting like that is unwanted.

    btw I have 9800m gtx sli 2GB and x7900 cpu (A10 bios)

I have same problem but a bit safe.Fan speed is always 100%.But while gaming I can hear the fan sound and max temp is 64-65C.When idle the temp goes to 74C and I hear no fan sound. However, at 74C I can hear the sound again and it takes the temp back to 68C and then likely fan stops again. The temp goes to 74C again and then fan spins again to take it back. This process continues..... Kinda funny?

    Hello,

I just replaced my 8700m GT's with what the seller claims to be '2GB Video Card 9800 GTX SLI'. However, as far as I can check, it appears to be a '1 GB 9800 GTM SLI'.

Does anyone know how I can check this?

9800m GTX SLI are two cards working together in SLI.Each card has 1Gb memory. However, in SLI the memory of second is disabled and only 1Gb is available for games. But both cards work together to run the game and you get better performance.

If you want to make it sure then go to Bios and check the video memory there you will see "2Gb".

In BIOS it states 1GB of video memory.
Is there any way to check if it is indeed the GTX? (should have a physx build in I read somewhere...)

    in Dxdiag I find:

    NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT

in BIOS and system information and Nvidia control panel I find the same.

Took the card back out and checked the Dell part number, it IS a 9800M GT, and not the GTX I want => return to seller.

    Hello,
I have a dell m1730 and the touchpad drives me nuts, all the advice on the net is about vista machines and mine is a win7 ultimate machine.
There are no drivers from dell for win7, and no little icons anywhere to turn it off and no buttons either.
Under the mouse icon in the control panel, it is for the wireless mouse only and the disable ps/2 is blanked out, so i have no control over it at all.
It is hard to even write a small email without it jumping to another place or deleting what i have typed.
Does anyone know how to stop this darn thing from working?

Hi everyone, i have fixed the problem.

Apparently the Dell M1730 has a Synaptics touch pad, so i downloaded the latest driver from Synaptics the link below

    Drivers | Synaptics

    I downloaded the driver for win7 64bit

Now i have full control of the touch pad and it is turned OFF

So anyone out there frustrated by their touch pad your problem is now solved.

I hope this helps you :)
