I was told i could get DDR3 to fit it, so why bother with DDR2?

    DDR3 will not fit. DDR2 has 200pin and I think DDR3 is 204pin

    Hi
Has anyone tried to use HW64info to control cooling ? . A11 is good for temperature, but the frequency of fan switching and the noise ... is harder and harder to accept .

I cannot tell you how great it is to do simple things like type a nice long letter without worrying about the touch pad, it is silly i know but it was such a nightmare before that i dared not write long letters for fear of losing what i had typed.

It's great to have this driver.

Regarding the DDR3 , the rotten people at the shop obviously don't know what they are doing, and i just realized that i am only running 4 gig of ram i am wondering if Minecraft would (hopefully) run a lot smoother if i put 8 gig in it?

I have been blaming my video card coz it gets hot and the fans drive me nuts, it still has the original vid card and some of you lucky guys have 2. Do you think it could be worth getting the better card/s and replacing it? i do not know how long this machine will last but if it is anything like my old 'Think Pad' then 10 years on it will still be working. lol

I just realized that we are complaining about the same thing, those fans make me crazy. I used to leave it on all night to download but in the end i couldn't take the noise any more. Whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz on and off and on and off, it is worse than the indian water torcher, at least the water drops consistantly. lol

Well I bought mine more than 3 years ago. The 3 upgrades I made were X7900 to X9000 ES , 8GB RAM and 1 Crucial C300 HD 256GB instead of 320Gb HDD.

    BUT

I never overclocked it more then 3400Ghz for CPU and never overclocked the GTX8800 SLI.

I also never played with exotic tools to change FAN speed.
Now It's Win 7 x32 128GB Kernel patched and all is working fine.

Mine is stock standard and gets hot but is still basically working fine and i am using Win7 64 bit ultimate

so (so far) i had no problems at all with the hardware.

The only complaint is the joltyness when i am playing minecraft.

i just get annoyed that Dell charges so much and then turns it's back on the people that trusted them.

Zero support once the sale is made, at least in regards to keeping the computer up-to-date with windows driver etc.

To be frank i would never buy another Dell. easier to buy cheaper units and upgrade them as times move on and i tell this to anyone that sees my Dell and thinks its flashy.

if you havent done it already, maybe its time to update your drivers.

Also, does anyone know where i can get the double video cards as cheap as possible?

I want to upgrade my graphics card to the 9800M GTX SLI. Is it necessary (or desirable) to remove the PhysX processor from the motherboard when performing this upgrade? I seem to recall reading that the 9800 has PhysX on-board, so I'm wondering if the existing PhysX chip will cause problems when I do the upgrade.

Actually there is no idea to keep the PhysX PPU and yes the GPU´s runs PhysX now so just remove the PPU.

how about leaving in the Aegia PPU so that you can relieve the GPU of the physx processing?

The separate Aegia PPU is like a co-processor so why not exploit it?

This is exactly what I'm trying to find out. Will the PhysX chip in the motherboard interfere in some way with the PhysX on the GPU, or will they work in tandem, yielding better results?

I don’t think the new nvidia drivers can see the old PhysX PPU. The way it looks the card is just sitting doing nothing.
Someone can probably explain it better then me though.

It seems to be only a 'software' issue with newer drivers that fails to support a dedicated aegeia board.

Perhaps rolling back to the stock dell video drivers would reactivate the card.

A better option would be some sort of driver hack that re-adds the capability. Seems a shame..

    According to this:

    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=206084

You need to roll back drivers.

Alternatively, try this to get your PPU back in action:

I think the last driver that supported the PhysX PPU card is PhysX_8.09.04_SystemSoftware. Any driver after that do not see the card.

But because PhysX is incorporated in the 9800, support for the standalone card is now irrelevant, right? Any new drivers would incorporate the PhysX properties directly from the 9800?

Anyone got working SLI profile for Just Cause 2? I'm running it with nearly High settings @1280x800.The game runs fine and no lag at all. However, I would like to increase performance.

I have T8300+8700M GT SLI+2GB.I'm surprised that how great my GPU can handle this game :D

    Hi,

New to the forum. I have a XPS M1730 that has the 8700M GT SLI GPU. I have the opportunity to purchase a new (not used or refurb) 9800M GTX SLI for $399.00 but have been somewhat hesitant.

Not an avid gamer but I dabble. My 1730 seems to have lots of the bells and whistles (X7900, 2.8, 4MB overclockable, Bluray player, 3G, Bluetooth, Dual 120 GB SSD's in stripe, WIN 7 ULT. 8 GB RAM, runs great. WIN EXP. INDEX 5.9)

Been reading here for a couple of weeks, love the forum. Just wanted some feedback from the more experienced. If it were your computer and your $$ would it be worth it?

    Thanks, glad to be here.

A single 9800M GTX is about twice as fast as both 8700Ms, so I would say yes to the upgrade.
However, if you don't use your lappie for gaming, I don't see why you would upgrade your cards.

I have a 3.5 year old (out of warranty, Service Tag CL2WRH1) XPS M1730 running Windows 7. I had been having screen blackouts off and on over about a week and increasing in frequency. Oddly, I was able to run a cable from the GPU’s DVI connection to my TV’s HDMI input and see the screen most of the time until the end. But then both went black and didn’t recover. During these blackouts, I was still able to access the computer through the network.
I replaced the original GPU (a NVIDIA GeForce 8700M 256) with a refurbished NVIDIA GeForce 8700M 512 and IT WORKED! … for about 20 hours. Then everything went dark. No more network access. Now it only powers up to a couple of clicks of the optical drive and a short whirring of the HD. The only lights are on the power indicator and the NUM CapLock.
I tried the startup diagnostic (FN+ power) and the lights and tones gave me the following sequence:
The three lock indicators flashing twice all together,
Caps only flashing for about two minutes,
    All three flash once,
Trilling beeps as they each flash left to right in quick succession,
    Three flat beeps,
Then continuous repeat of the trilling and flat beeps and flashes again

Apparently this reduces to 3-3-1 according to the charts I found. That means “NVRam Insufficient Power”.
This is my second bad experience with Dell and I’m ready to toss the whole thing and get an ASUS N75SF or a Toshiba Qosmio unless someone can offer me hope?

It's 2012 and the Dell M1730 with two 9800m GTX SLI performs amazingly well for most modern games. It is almost as good as my Alienware see sig which is quite an achievement given the machine is three years old.

8700M GT is not a bad card at all.I'm surprised to see that it can run Alan Wake fine without lag.My single 8700M GT handles Alan Wake very good without lag.Performance can be improved with a proper SLI profile :D

Just to update on my graphics card overheating problem it wasn't caused by new drivers or anything. It was just the fans were clogged by dust.

I haven't figured this out at first, but I decided to do a copper shim mod and when I actually opened my 9800M GTX card and saw that mess inside with big chunks of dust I knew why my gpu temps were rising to 100 degrees celsius and screen going off and on ;)

So when I saw what happened to my GPU, i took the whole motherboard out and cleaned the CPU fan, whole case and heatsinks as well and it was clogged as bad as GPU.. (also removed the ageia physx card at this oportunity so there will be more space for cpu cooling) so after cleaning all the fans, blades and heatsinks and applied this copper squares whenever possible with ic diamond 7 paste, now my gpu sits at 75 degree celsius at full load which is awesome! Computer starts with the card at 39 and then it sits idle at 43 degree celsius.. cpu alone sat idle at 27-28  (X7900M) ...all this with all fans on max and cpu were running at 3.0Ghz which is my default frequency I ran with

so if you have some overheating problems that you didn't have before it might be well worth to check your fans inside your gpu/cpu

couple of pictures I made from the process:

Hi all...I am a proud M1730 owner and my laptop is out of warranty. The laptop has finally developed graphics issues as it crashes on the video drivers during bootup. I backed up any important data I had on the laptop and loaded a fresh copy of Windows 7 with just the latest Nvidia video drivers and the machine crashes reporting a video error shortly after booting into windows. The machine then hard locks (have to hold the power button in, turn it off/back on to do anything). If I run the machine in safe mode it is fine, but obviously this is not a solution to the problem. From reading through this thread in the forum it sounds like video problems are common for these laptop. I have a pair of 9800GTs in SLI currently in the laptop. I checked my service tag number on Dell's site and can re-open the warranty for $420. The cheapest I seem to be able to find the cards is around $400. I am running 4GB of RAM and an 80GB SSD. I have blown air through the base of the machine as well as removing the cover above the keyboard and blowing through that direction. Based on everyone's experience, if I re-open the warranty and then issue a call for my video card...what do you think will end up happening? I end up with a refurbished set of vid cards? they tell me they don't have any and have to replace my machine?

Yeh I have Throttlestop now and I did some tweaks with it.Well, I'm not any expert with overclocking :) I'll give you the details latar.

I have Alan Wake. Also, I have 8700m GT SLI.The SLI works fine but I don't get much better performance. However SLI works much better with 8800m GTX.So you have a better chance :D Game is fine by the way.

All benchmarks are done with single card as I don't like SLI at all.It gives unstable fps :(
Ended the game. It's smooth @low and lags at some points for few sceonds only

Ok- thanks. So a single 8800 should at least double those results, and that's enough to me. If anyone has Risen 2 I would be grateful for the information.
And I'm waiting for the info how T8300 OC cpu affects in the games ;)

Just a quick question. I have a M1730 with X9000, 88M SLI. I was having issues with charing the laptop. They tried to fix it multiple times and offered me a replacement. They offered me two laptops but both looks downgrade. What do you suggest?

    XPS 17 - L702X Elemental Silver ALuminum

If your CPU is crashing when you are using the 13 multiplier it is probably because you don't have the voltage set high enough. Start with the maximum voltage before clicking on the Turn On button. Delete the ThrottleStop.ini file if you have accidentally saved some unstable values before starting ThrottleStop.

thanks heaps Uncle :) :) :) :) an for help break 18k on me Beast

    @spradhan01
you had sli > so both single gpu options considered downgrades, if me would tell them not happy with both options and try negotiate firmly say for CrossfireX 5870 and 1920x1200 display on a M17X and a better cpu

Really need to be compensated for all the troubles ya had with m1730 so deserve better. keep try nego for a better option

also if had 7200rpm HD on M1730 then 7200rpm on M17X instead of 5400
    GoodLuck,

yes can be done ;) , so did disable Intel Speedstep in dells bios for Core 2 DUO ? here Uncles instructions for extra 200mhz how-enable-intel-dynamic-acceleration-ida-both-cores-core-2-duo

    @spradhan01
M17xR2 is good but there should be a better CPU.Also, you should ask for a 1080p or 1200p LCD.Other than that a single HD 5870 is good enough to beat 9800M GTX SLI :)

    @unclewebb
Thanks for quick answer.Wasn't expecting you here in no time :D :D :D.Now everything is fine.I have Throttlestop 4.0.I changed the multiplier to 13 and disabled SLMF and saw that the processor was running with running with unstable multiplier between 12 to 12.54.It was changing all the time in TS/Reboot/Opened CPU-Z the multiplier was 12.5 for some seconds and then 13 and then again 12.5/opened TS/the multiplier was 12-12.54 changing continuously/Started the TS Bench/Selected 2 threads and 32M/Bench started and now the multiplier was constant 12/Bench stopped/The multiplier is again between 12-12.54 changing continously :O?? Well, I'll try to do some more tests.Actually never overclocked CPU :D

I got pm insisting to ask for dual gpus. Also, Dell keeps on talking nonsense that I have 8800M GTX SLI with 1 GB and 555M is 3GB so it is 3X faster than 88M SLI. Also they say that 740QM is quadcore and my X9000 is dual core.

Actually, the video memory doesn't represent the power of the graphic card. There are many other factors.A single HD 5870 can beat 8800m/9800m GTX SLI.However, GT 555M can't do so in every game.As for CPU the 740QM is low-end CPU with lower frequency.
