I have just been tweaking mine and have gone into the settings and turned down all my colours.
I would tend to aggree with you , having used the V1.4 profile from page one of this thread i found it was far to "bright" and all the colours looked so strong
I have turned them down to a level im happy with but the resoluiton and quality of this screen are awesome , shame its an upgrade the user has to perfom himself and not summit dell offers out the box

    Hello community
Why not try for here with an XPS 17 to i5 to replace the screen on B173HW01.V4?

But should work with the drivers from the forum here.
Furthermore, all drivers are otherwise identical to the XPS 15, so it must go!
I will replace the display and reports .............

you shouldn't have any problems switching the displays of an i5 equipped XPS 17, as you said, everything is basically identical as an i7 equipped XPS 17 with exception of the graphics card, but both the 435M and 445M use the same driver, so no problems there.
Good luck and do report back!

Screen came today, just installed it, screen is perfect no faulty pixels or anything.

I have not installed a color management profile yet.

One thing I can say screen is a lot brighter than what I am used to. I tried turning the screen brightness up and down, but the hot keys to turn brightness up and down don't seem to do anything. Any ideas?

    Hey guys,

Just wondering has anyone installed the AU B173HW01 V.0?

I have been offered an XPS 17 replacement but I will only accept if I know I can get a 1080p screen and this is the only one I can find in stock.

Alternatively anyone know of anywhere I can get the V.4 that wont cost a small fortune?

    Thanks so much.

    Hi Guys,

Been reading this thread since before I bought my xps 17, and have finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade my screen to 1080p.
Viewing angles are a necessity to me, being a student I watch loads of films on my laptop, so I've decided to try and go for the Hannstar HSD173PUW1-A00 LCD.

    anyway I've found this seller:

HANNSTAR HSD173PUW1-A00 17.3" FULL HD SCREEN LED LEFT on eBay (end time 12-Feb-11 14:06:36 GMT)

and have emailed them to ask if this is a genuine new screen, unlike the other ebay seller I read about that was giving LG "compatible" screens instead. I'll update you all on what I find out.

One thing I did want to ask though is explained exactly here by Jaze22:

One thing I can say screen is a lot brighter than what I am used to. I tried turning the screen brightness up and down, but the hot keys to turn brightness up and down don't seem to do anything. Any ideas?

I mean I may want to upgrade my resolution, and a little research has made me worried that by changing my screen I'll lose the ability to change my brightness, is this the case?

thanks for any help guys and thanks for all you've done so far! :D

I have a question about the Hannstar screen. According to this article Review mySN XMG U700 ULTRA GTX 470M SLI Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews it would seem to have the best contrast ratio when it says "high-quality Hannstar HSD173PUW1 display with a black value of under 0.2 cd/m² and an excellent contrast of over 1000:1", but the specs show it to be much lower from the link to the data sheets on the first page (min 400 typ 500). I am interested in how it really compares to the others for movies, is it the difference between the -A and the -A00 version? The link only shows the -A specs. Does anyone have the Hannstar alongside the AU for comparing black levels and viewing angles?

Did you try to adjust the brightness through the Windows Mobilily Center. You should be able to open it by pressing the little icon with the cogs above the keyboard, or alternatively type Windows Mobility Center in the start menu. If that works, you know it is not a hardware issue and you might want to uninstall and reinstall Dells Quickset software.

Someone here installed it and even made a profile for it. I included the profile in my archive, so yes, you should be able to use it!

It shouldn't happen, see my reply above, and possibly wait for more info here.

I'm now a proud owner of the AUO B173HW01 V4 and my gosh, what a huge improvement over the stock LG model that Dell ship with the L701x. Although, I almost damaged my cable upon installation...wow those things are fragile!!

Thanks to all those forum members who got in touch with me...your screens are now on their way to you!!! :)

FYI - I have 4 left of the above so if anybody else still needs one, drop me an email on [email protected] and I will let you know the deal. I can post to the states too for our friends across the ocean who need one.

Cheers all (and this isn't a commerical posting...i want everyone to have the chance to own this screen!!!)

Ok having had the AU 1.4 screen for a few days and having had time to mess about with settings over the weekend here are my findings :

Out of the box even with the profile settings found on page 1 of this thread i found the colours to be very over saturated and the screen overly bright, having had my eyes lasered a while ago the screen was painful to look at.

However after a few hours of tweaking i am more than happy with my screen and have got the exact brightness and colour saturation that works perfectly "for me"
Everyones eyes are different and what looks good for one may not look so good for someone else

All the options can be easily changed from the nvidia control panel (right click an empty space on your desktop)

I have tried unininstalling Dell Quickset and reinstalling, but the brightness hotkeys still don't work.

Windows Mobility Brightness settings do nothing.

The only way I have found to adjust brightness settings is via the 'Catalyst Control Center'. But would be nice to have hotkeys working so I can adjust brightness easily during day and night.

With profiles I have tried profille on first page and default, with those settings I personally found the screen hard to look at due to brightness and very strong reds.

Using 'Catalyst Control Center' I have played around with settings and so far seem happy with this:

    Red
    Gamma 1.40
    Brigtness -100
    Contrast 75

    Green
    Gamma 1.40
    Brightness -84
    Contrast 75

    Blue
    Gamma 1.40
    Brightness -84
    Contrast 75

I can say the LG 'Multi Touch' 900P screen is actually 3mm thicker than a standard screen. Looks like it is just a standard LG 900P screen with the 3mm touch screen stuck over it with some kind of glue I think. If one was brave enough to remove and stick it on the FHD screen you could have the worlds first FHD Multi Touch screen laptop!

I might actually take display cover off and plug the multi touch in (it has it's own little plug), just to see if it works and is accurate when using FHD screen resolution. I know with old screen if you changed resolution, the touch screen would still be accurate to where your finger pressed.

The brightness is easily adjusted. My profile was made with the brightness at about 50%. Any brighter and it is indeed quite bright.

Good to hear you have found settings that work for you. That is in the end what this is all about.

It sounds like the electrical signal for the backlight is somehow not coming through. You might consider checking both ends of the cable to see if they're connected properly.

That would be too cool! But... If the touch sensitive bit is indeed 3mm thick, I wonder if the bezel would still fit. I guess an XPS 17 with a touch screen would need to come with a different bezel. But trying it without the bezel would be a fun and rep-worthy project :D

I have just made a video but don't have an account at any video sharing sites to upload it. But basically I removed bezel, connected 'multi touch' connection and laid the old 'multi touch' screen across the keyboard. I powered up the laptop and guess what happened...FHD screen with 'Multi Touch' working perfectly! The 'multi touch' works just as accurately at the full 1920x1080p resolution.

Now the 'multi touch' layer is glued onto the front metal casing of the screen. It probably could be removed. But I have another idea, has anyone removed the display from the metal casing? If that is possible I could just switch the internals and have FHD with fully working 'Multi Touch'.

When I put old screen back in the brightness hotkeys worked, switched back to the FHD screen and brightness hotkeys not working. I think I need to order correct FHD lead for the brightness hotkeys to work, my part number is for HD+ lead.

But I can confirm a world first :D

I switched the internals around, so the FHD internals are inside the HD+ metal casing with 'Multi Touch' overlay. My laptop now has the best of both worlds, a FHD 1920x1080p display with 'Multi Touch'!

So anyone wanting above, simply buy the 'Multi Touch' laptop and switch the screen internals!

Could you take a few pictures? Did you manage to put the bezel back on even with the 3mm more in thickness?

Here is a picture showing the 1920x1080p screen with 'Multi Touch'. Sorry I made it full size so you could clearly read the 1920x1080 bit on the screen. You can see my right finger highlighting stuff.

My bezel fits perfectly because it was originally designed for the extra 3mm thickness, this was a 1600x900 multi touch laptop.

Yeah, I see that now. I thought you changed it on a L701x, not a Studio XPS.

Guess we will need to see when the multitouch L702x come out to see if there is a difference in thickness with the L701x.

It's a Studio 1749, uses the same screens as on L701x, even had b+rg option. So what works on this will more than likely work on the L701 or L702 when it is released.

This is my first post. I just finished reading this whole thread. :)

When I booted up my new XPS L701X the other day, I was totally bummed by the low screen resolution. I'm a graphic designer and I want lots of stuff on my screen at the same time. I found this message board [YAY! :)] through an inquiry on the Straight Dope Message Board. I definitely want to swap out my screen. It's great to read the successful swap stories!

    I found both the

and the HANNSTAR [ Amazon.com: HANNSTAR HSD173PUW1 LAPTOP LCD SCREEN 17.3" Full-HD LED DIODE (SUBSTITUTE REPLACEMENT LCD SCREEN ONLY. NOT A LAPTOP ): Electronics]

screens on Amazon, both for $172.98 + $9.99 shipping
    sold by "East Coast LCDs."
    Here's their storefront page:

    They've got good reviews.

    Anyone ever order from them?

I emailed them about that screen and they said they have compatible replacement in stock. This means it probably won't work with the L701x :(

Think you would need to buy multi touch version then do upgrade, unless parts are available somewhere.

    Some more pics:

I can say after a few days the new 1920x1080 screen is much better. I always felt the 1600x900 was like looking through a small letterbox, not much area to work with. The better colours, contrast and viewing angles are definitely easier on the eyes. Don't be put off thinking the resolution will make text hard to read on websites, it's easily overcome with FireFox and other browsers by simply zooming in once or twice to make things as big as on a 1600x900 screen.

Hello everyone, I'm new here so I apologise if this has been asked before. Was just wondering if in the future we will be able to purchase and replace the screen with the 3d one coming out soon?

Also, when replacing the screen, how hard is it to cause no visable damage or marks from doing so? At the mo I'm feeling slightly nervous about doing it as I dont want to "chip" or damage the laptop.

    Thanks for your help

May I also chip in a question... Since in UK the parts available are much less when compared to US, do you think it is possible to replace the screen with a 1080p, multi-touch ones? I don't really need 3D, but a multi-touch function would be great on my XPS17

Early on in this thread Mitchell2.24v and maybe RedlanceEQ and some others reported breaking some of the teeth on the bezel fasteners when removing the bezel. It didn't seem to be a problem since there are more than enought to hold the bezel securely even with a couple of broken ones.
My screen arrived several weeks ago and I will be putting it in on my next trip home in a week or so.
I was just wondering if some of you folks who have replaced their screen recently could report on whether or not you were able to get it done without breaking any teeth and also any tips or tricks you used that helped with the job.
    Thanks.

Yep I noticed some of the teeth seem to snap. But I always got the impression this didnt affect anything and certainly cosmetically didnt make a difference once you get the bezel back on. I'm not concerned with the laptop looking like I've opened it up once I've put it back together.

    Hi guys,

I managed to install my AUO B173HW01 V4 screen without damaging any teeth. It's not a pretty picture as you remove the bezel however...it looks like you are distorting it but the plastic is more durable than you give credit.

What i did notice is that the bezel comes off easier if you pull it back on itself as you lift it away from the screen. It's the angle of the teeth that you need to work with and it comes away really easy if you pull back as you lift.

As I have posted previously, it was the ribbon cable connectors that I almost damaged as I push the cable into the AUO screen at the wrong angle and bent the pins!!!

Make sure you have a pair of tweezers to hand in the event of this...you can then bend them back into place and reinsert correctly!!

By the way, I have another batch of AUO V4 screens on the way if people still need them?? I know several forum members have already obtained them from me and can vouch for my credibility.

    Cheers, Lee ([email protected])

PS. This screen looks sooo much better than the generic LG one that Dell include on your standard issue XPS17!!!!

So people now is so far ......
The New OTH b173hw01.V4 in my XPS 17 I5-560 installed and it runs great !!!!!!!
As I suspected, it runs with the originals drivers from the Dell site
no patch no driver modd fit.
Optimus works perfectly and at full HD and I5, it must be.
The replacement display is a CHI MEI, the display was three months, the LG, but I think this makes no difference.
So now the rumor is it just on the I7-740Qm are now hopefully obsolete!
The display is very very cool, as I'm used to from my desktop (and calibrate without).
Gruss also Mitchell, "" keep it up .......

I would just like to add that the AUO B173HW01 V4 screen does NOT work with standard Dell drivers supplied with the XPS17 i7.

Mitchell mentions this on the first page and another forum member and I proved this last Sunday when we installed the AUO screen for him. The screen workied past the BIOS and 'Startig Windows' splash screens but then went black as the Dell drivers booted into memory.

We simply downloaded the 266.44 drivers and installed and everything was fine.

AK...looks like you don't experience this issue on the i5...unless your machine came with more current drivers than the ones we have in the i7? Although, they should be the same????

    Anyway, food for thought!!!

So yesterday I got my 2 17 I-XPS 560, so old display out new pure. System is turned on and set up anew. Now all Dell drivers downloaded and installed. Everything works fine with the original Dell drivers, which is the same as for the i7 with my panel of Gt445m.Auf the same number as on the stand of Mitchell. As I said Optimus does perfekt.kann liked to set a few photos. That no one has attempted to replace the display at the i5? Regardless am very happy and it was worth every euro.
    Greetings from Germany

I might be interested, still waiting for my XPS 17 to be delivered (ordered 08/02, estimated ship 28/02). I'll see if I can live with the stock LG panel or not. I'm located in Canada.

    Hey lee,

Does that mean you have to install the nvidia driver before installing the new screen? Excited about receiving mine!

    HI Matt,

    Answer = Yes.

I would download it now and install, just so it's done. You can then just switch screens after it arrives

    :)

Hey Matt, this is the link to the 266.44 that I'm running but I am aware there is also a 266.58 that has now been released. Perhaps try this one and then upgrade further later??
