how much approx. for a new screen? and what do you guys do about the old screen? I'm in uk and screen and backlit keyboard issues are bugging me so much haha
-
i wold be impressed to know what backlit keyboard issues you have seen as i dont have one!!!!
(also UK based and didnt think it was an option )
-
the issue is I don't have one
Now that 702 offers it I'm gonna call up dell and see if they can get me one
-
cool keep us updated, would love to know if you get one
-
Hey what colour settings are you guys using? Still haven't quite adjusted from my wled from sxps.
-
Have you tried Mitchell2.24v's suggestions at the beginning of this thread?
The Best Nvidia driver 435M/445M -
Yea I find Mitchell2.24v's extremely red. Couldn't stand it lol.
I think I have it to how I like it. Still slightly red but I think that is the nature of the high colour gamut. My old screen looks really blue now so maybe just adjusting from that. -
It is...
just allow you eyes to adjust. going from saturated blue to a warmer setting took me about 5 minutes to adjust and I have kept his settings for the the old 1600x900 display and it made it way more tolerable.

Hello community
Then I'll try for the second time L702x is ordered ..
Will tell, but after it has already worked in the L701x (i5) is in
new 99.98% fit. Until then times -
Had the same reaction but now I'm fully used to Mitchell's setting. MAkes the default screen much better to look at.
Of course, it does not beat having a 1080p... >.> -
I got spanked yesterday by the moderators for promoting the AUO V4's that I have available.
Sorry if I ticked any of you guys off, I was only trying to help...and I know those of you who have their AUO fitted are more than happy
.
So I cannot mention it again, but you know my email by now if you need to speak to me about one.
Cheers guys!!! -
When I place my L701X next to my external Dell LCD Monitor I finally realized that my laptop screen is really really blue.
Didn't really notice until now, an eye opener lol. -
A big thank you for all the contributors to this thread. For the past 2 months I have been lurking around the threads picking up all the little bits of information I could.
I was wondering if anyone has set up a US purchasing plan like the gentleman in the UK has set up. Because of this thread I would really like to get a new screen for my XPS17.
Thanks again for everyone's hard work. This is really appreciated. -
I am inclined to disagree with you guys (although of course it is personaly opinion!). I am using a colour profile that is much much 'bluer" than mitchellv2.4 or than even than stock. Both of those look very red to me.
But even with this colour profile, I just noticed the oddest phenomena. After using the laptop for a while, if I go to use my iphone, the whole thing looks blue! This is because comparitvely, the laptop screen is still quite red apparently.
I consider the iPhone 4 to have great colour reproduction and true whites. You guys should compare your screens to an iPhone 4 if you have em.
nb: this only applies to those who have the auo v.4 1080p replacement -
I am upgrading my screen for the resolution and am not so keen on the quality of screen but since I am paying a good amount I am very excited to get a hold of that AUO 1080p that you guys have and see what you are seeing
.
I usually run multiple VMwares and with the current 1600x900 screen, I can't really see the whole vmware guest screen properly especially when I need to scan through lots and lots of lines of logs, wide screen is not the best when it comes to logs in my personal opinion but I believe FHD resolution should solve that problem.
Your opinion: If you bought another XPS, would you again replace the screen? -
n713imno...please email me: [email protected]
I can help you out.
-
anyone in uk can tell me how much would such a replacement screen cost, and what to do with the original screen?
-
Keep the original screen, you'll have to put it back if you ever need to send your XPS back to be fixed.
As for price in the UK, I'm not sure but around 80 pounds I think. -
A replacement LG screen can be picked up in the UK for around £80-90.
A premium model like the AUO V4 can go for up to £170....do a search on Google and you can see for yourself. -
I'm really dying to know if the new L702x will be AUO v4 compatible.....no one has received the new XPS yet?
-
It will test the display and report to the L702x.
I think it will work to 99% is not it?
-
Hi guys, quick question, do I Have to update the graphics driver for this new monitor? Installing the latest nvidia driver stops my external monitor from working via hdmi. My new monitor comes tomorrow so any help would be greatly appreciated
-
Regarding the graphics driver...I did a screen install with another customer and he still had the Dell graphics driver installed. When we got the AUO in and turned it on, the screen worked and displayed the BIOS screen and Windows splash screen, but when the graphics driver booted in to memory the screen went BLACK and we could not see Windows.
The solution? Reinstall the crappy LG, update to 266.44 and then reinstall the AUO. Everything then worked just great.
This is my personal experience and I suppose other people's machines may be different, so I would suggest trying both drivers...it's not going to cause any problems and will only cost you your time.
-
exactly the reason why when i reinstalled windows i used the nvidia drivers from nvidia site so hopefully when i fit my AUO v4 on monday
it should boot straight up
-
Hi guys, for those of you who have ordered a AUO screen off me, please check your emails.
Thanks
Lee -
Hey buddy what's the viewing angles like on your screen? Any ideas?
-
It looks like the L702x (1080p 3D display model) will be using a slightly different panel that supports the 3D technology explained on the AUO corporate site here: AUO - 3D
AUO 3D Display Technology: Glasses-type 3D Display Technology
Pattern Retarder
To produce two images with orthogonal polarization states, an additional optical device is required. To create such a device, we start by dividing all pixels into either odd and even rows, followed by the laminating of a patterned phase retardation film on the corresponding positions on the exterior of the display to create orthogonal polarizations (phase difference = 90°) in the output lights. These polarizer glasses are designed so that the polarized image received in one eye is either odd or even, while the other eye is blocked from receiving the same polarized images (a schematic is shown in Fig. 1). Because the audience will move their heads during the viewing of the stereo content, a linear polarization design will result in cross-talk between the left and right eye images whenever any head tilt occurs. To overcome this problem, a circular polarization design is often employed. In other words, the orthogonal polarizations are patterned as either counterclockwise or clockwise, thus ensuring that the stereo image will not be affected by any tilt of the head.

Some news about the L702X fullhd compatibility? Can we use the same AUO B17HW01 V4 that were used on the L701X? -
Most likely... BUT not for 3D use since it would require an additional panel layer to support the glasses or a completely different display technology to support no-glasses 3D. If you do not care about 3D, a standard 1600x900 or 1920x1080 panel should work as long as Dell keeps the standard 40-pin connector in use and does not lock out the display "type" in the system BIOS (like they did in the 14R laptops
).

Ten (10) V4 screens are coming to me from Jue (1 will be mine) -- the other 9 are first come first serve (you pay for it, of course -- but you'll save some money vs. buying just one). PM me for details.
-
thumper300zx, sent you a PM. Looking to replace the screen in my 17r. IT appears that LG screen in these XPSs is the same as the one in my 17r.
-
I've just had a new v4 screen fitted (courtesy of a Dell engineer who came to replace the motherboard
), it looks absolutely stunning compared to the original screen.
Just want to say thanks to Lee Barlow for supplying the screen, excellent service and communication. -
Cheers mate and I'm glad yours got to you in one piece. Unfortunately, we have had a few issues with some screens from this batch due to the Royal Mail van hitting a Metrolink tram!!! Oh my!!!!
Hopefully all those affected have now been refunded and we will get some more in in the next couple of weeks and make sure everyone who was affected negatively leaves happy. Sorry for the inconvenience guys and please bear with me whilst I sort this out. Hopefully you know by now that I'm 100% dedicated to ensuring everyone leaves with a fully-loaded XPS17 !!!!
Thanks and Regards

Dell posted a new Display Driver for L701X.
Has anyone tested it with the AUO screens?
Do they go black as the previous original Video Driver or does it work fine with AUO display?
I would prefer to install DELL drivers if it works with the replaced display.
Any comments? -
A tip in case anyone hasn't mentioned it -- I started on the upper right (as if looking at screen). Once I got the right side a little loose and got the first on the TOP right loose, I gently slid my finger along the underside of the top and all the clips slid off without a hitch.
-
Oh! That sounds sweet!
I will try that! -
Maybe you just need to get used to 'too blue'
He he -- I'll try your pink LG profile until I get my new screen (coming soon!!!). It does look VERY pink initially -- the whites look pink -- must be the LG logo creeping into the settings
-
My warranty is only a year to begin with -- And I kinda doubt they'd notice or care if it had a different screen. But who knows
-
So -- WHAT'S THE CONSENSUS, folks -- I've got an i5 560m with 435m 1GB w/optimus -- I've read you need to install the modded drivers for the AUO screen, but have also read the modded drivers aren't for use with Optimus -- can anyone verify?
-
Thumber300 @
had the same set at Xps17 (i5).
Replacing the screen is no problem with the original driver!
Optimus works perfect, laptop was built in January.
Reports time if it worked for you too.
Greetings -
Ok. Thanks for your input. I guess it doesn't matter much -- if it doesn't work I'll still have it all taken apart so I can just swap it back out again.
-
Just got in the 10 screens I ordered from Jue!!!
This XPS 17 is finally the machine it was always meant to be. SO SEXY in 1080p!!!!
I did not have to change drivers from what I had -- booted right into Windows in 1920 x 1080. Now I'm fully in love with the l701x !!! -
Thumper, what version of the Dell graphics driver came installed on your L701x?
I presume it will be a more current version than the one us early L701x adopters had pre-installed? -
It might be more current than what other people received, but I received mine with 435m 1gb w/Optimus and Driver Revision: 8.17.12.5951 -- I have not updated that installation.
-
I also noticed when I pulled out my 1600 x 900 screen it is an AUO.
-
Good news!
-
Ahhh...I think it's just the i7 machines that need the graphics driver update.
Makes sense now. -
It is surprising that the video card driver even has an impact on the lcd panel swap.
The video BIOS does have an impact but the driver is typically not.
It is interesting that in this case it seems to make a difference. -
Yes, I do have an i5 with 435m.
-
I used "Update Driver" via device manager and got a black screen. Had to roll back to 266.44.
